admin fox was a confusing man, she decided. however, for his warning, and the way he scratched kipkip’s head, he seemed less cold than some of the others of his rank.[break][break]

nina might have taken the necklace with no issue in most other circumstances. jewelry store robbery was on her resume – but she found the city’s bloodshed looking back at her in the wink of sapphire facets as admin fox held it out for her to take. [break][break]

she bit her lip briefly in consideration. there were people like bryan delarosa that would shame her for caring. however, deciding to go off the hunch that admin fox was different, she shook her head. “i don’t want it, actually. is that okay? will you keep it?” she pointed over her shoulder then. “or maybe you can turn around, and i can throw it over there, and we can pretend neither of us saw it.”[break][break]

she smiled, hoping he would find her amusing and not a problem.[break][break]

she groaned under her breath. she’d very nearly died, and now, all she wanted was have a negroni in the safety of her motel room with a nice comfort movie. she’d done enough.[break][break]

it was a wide range of emotions. anger, to utter joy, to a deep sadness in the pit of her stomach, and then back again to laughing. laughing like he’d never been gone at all.[break][break]

but things had changed, like his shoulders. in seven years, he had grown, and so had she, and she was curious about the life he’d lived so far. the mention of unova was another whirlwind in her heart.[break][break]

however, before she could blurt out ’i’m from unova too’, he called her cutie. she stopped short, looking surprised. that was new, and she wasn’t sure how to feel about it.[break][break]

she watched the sand fall between his fingers, considering it for a moment, before feeling relieved by his suggestion. ”yeah, let’s go.” she jumped up, and took steps towards the ocean before turning towards him, not wanting to let him out of her sight for long.[break][break]

mudkip barked his name a few times, hopping around pickett before taking off past nina and colliding with a wave.[break][break]

”you know,” nina said, ”life really turned upside down when you guys left.” there was another pang of hurt that she tried her best to conceal. ”a lot happened.”[break][break]

what was a favor worth from admin fox? she looked at him, the question perhaps clear in her intrigued gaze. when he brought up his odd features, her magenta eyes fell away again.[break][break]

”no, i don’t.” yet, she thought to herself, finding it odd that he would advise against it. ”aren’t we, like, actively making power spots?”[break][break]

sapphires caught the light, and her attention. finally realizing the treasure her mudkip had found, she bent to take it and brush off some of the dust. ”wow. it’s gorgeous.” she held it out for admin fox. ”real too. probably from one of the safety boxes.”[break][break]

mudkip sat at their feet, big eyes shifting from one to the other, waiting for praise that did not come quickly enough.[break][break]

the water poured from the maw of the gyarados was whipped up into a twister, pulling some of the nihilego into it and buying them some breathing room.[break][break]

”fine – i’m not the one who’s poisoned. let’s just get out of here!”[break][break]

nina pulled a tera orb from her bag, and it flashed brightly in her hand, transforming her milotic into blue crystal.[break][break]

”water pulse!”[break][break]

one last nihilego remaining nearby was taken down by the last shot. she took her chance, tossing a pokeball at an unexpected treasure. she’d be leaving with something, at least.[break][break]

she took the motionless ball and then looked around at all the capable pokemon allies amongst them. cassandra was an impressive kid.[break][break]

”i think they’re gone,” she said about the nihilego. she hoped so, at least.[break][break]

oh, she wanted to hug him, but he was disgusting. she balled her fists in frustration, pink nails digging into her palms. “why are you covered in cheese? go wash off! and look where you’re going!”[break][break]

it took her back years. laughter bubbled up from nowhere, soft and then louder, before a tear rolled down her cheek just as unexpectedly. she found herself crawling off her towel and into the sand next to him.[break][break]

“actually, i don’t even care.” she sniffled and slumped against his shoulder. it had been so long since she’d seen anyone from the past. everyone was a stranger. “where have you been? i missed you.”

”oh my gods.” she hadn’t ran for her life in a while. panic surged through her like the electricity that overtook the gyarados above, dropping it out of the sky with a fearsome roar.[break][break]

nina scrambled, arms over her head as though it might do any good. the dragon landed loudly only a few meters behind her, and she screamed out a short yelp. very quickly, her milotic was at her side again, coiling around her protectively.[break][break]

”great! you can handle it from here, right?” she called to the officer, her face both rattled and unimpressed. [break][break][break]

”great.” veiled sarcasm. she didn’t want to be there, in that ugly wreckage of a city doing dirty work, but no protest came from her.[break][break]

she did notice the scar on his hand as he ran it through his hair. many of the higher ups had wild stories, most of which she’d only heard whispers of from others. she’d yet to hear his. her eyes lingered briefly, curiosity getting the better of her.[break][break]

in the background, her mudkip stopped to dig and pull a shimmering sapphire necklace from the rubble – perhaps something from a less sturdy safety deposit box. it then leapt after them, scrambling to catch up with its treasure sparkling in the sunlight.[break][break]

they arrived in front of the safe. at news about deaths, nina felt a remorseful nausea wash over her, though the familiarity of it all had begun to numb the sensation.[break][break]

”i can’t promise anything if they’re dead, but i guess i’ll be done quicker.” [break][break]

though she had little faith she’d be able to hold them all off, leaving cassandra there never arose in her mind as an option.[break][break]

”cassandra! don’t touch it!”[break][break]

but she had already, and nina knew they would not have long before the toxin began to take effect. she reached for more pokeballs – two aces, brought along just in case.[break][break]

“help her, phione!”[break][break]

the mythical pokemon hurried to cassandra, positioning itself between her and the nearest nihilego, and unleashed a strong water pulse.[break][break]

”gyarados, mega evolve, then waterfall!” the stone on nina’s anklet glowed, and the dragon grew in both size and ferocity. a violent river of water poured from its grimace, splashing away several of the foes.[break][break]

making herself a clear threat, nina and her milotic quickly found themselves face to face with the enemy. nihilego tossed toxic spikes, which floated in the space between them.[break][break]

”are you okay?! tell me if you start feeling weird!” she called to cassandra, digging in her bag hastily for something else as nihilego drew closer.[break][break]

too distracted by all that were around them, she did not notice the gun pointed into the air by the announcer. when it fired off, she shrieked and ducked behind the dash.

nina had been on the island of dewford taking care of other business when it had all gone down. despite her training, she’d been grateful to not be a part of the war efforts.[break][break]

her mudkip scampered over rubble as she walked beside the admin. she silently regarded it all as a waste. also, it was weird to have been summoned there.[break][break]

quickly, she realized there might have been some misunderstanding.[break][break]

”me?” a pause, and she looked over at him. ”i think maybe there might be some errors in my file. i’m not an explosives tech. or a hacker. or anyone who does this kind of thing.”[break][break]

but, of course, it was always good to assure a superior that calling upon her was not a waste of time.[break][break]

”i can get the code, though,” she said with confidence. ”if you can get me a list of the staff that worked here.”[break][break][break]

nina gawked at montgomery as though he were crazy for addressing her in such a way. surely, though, in a region at constant conflict, law enforcement officers at their wits’ end. had to be, to go anywhere without backup.[break][break]

”but this is hoenn!”[break][break]

perhaps the unovan cowboy believed that his pistol was all the backup he needed, and he'd not been there long enough to realize that was not the case.[break][break]

distractions, though. she was good at distractions, and– what the hell. his pistol fired off, promptly drawing attention right to him.[break][break]

”oh my gods, were you drunk when you walked in? what did you do that for?!”[break][break]

she whistled, getting the attention of her milotic, and gave a signal. a spotlight beamed down on her, and she began running away from montgomery at top speed. ”make it quick, please!”[break][break][break]

their undead corpses had caught her by surprise before, and though she remained uncertain if it had all been in her head or not, they would not catch her off guard again.[break][break]

‘a bit complicated’ was a more intriguing than she’d expected, though quickly drowned out by the rest of cassandra's answer. ”you’re right about that,” nina agreed about being there alone.[break][break]

they followed, the light of milotic’s markings shining on breathing walls and further illuminating the strange plants that glowed on their own.[break][break]

”thanks. me too. hopefully he just ran back to the rift.”[break][break]

although, she had little hope that he’d made it without a light to guide him. would she be punished for his disappearance? the thought lingered in the back of her mind, as much as alien threats.[break][break]

when they came to the wreckage of the quastor lucis, her heart sunk.[break][break]

”oh, it’s megalopolan alright.” she urged her milotic around the ship, peering into the dark crevices. ”i don’t think he’s here.”[break][break]

would cassandra insist on exploring? she hoped not.[break][break]
