she had called some motels home. however, she refused to claim the seabreeze inn, which was far less than cozy, with too-old appliances and an exceptionally strange gentleman who hung out in the laundry room and stared too much.[break][break]

”i’m visiting a friend. it’s an extended stay kind of situation – but i’ll be out of here soon, i think.”[break][break]

her job was almost done. she’d gained rika’s trust, along with the mining company’s shipment schedules and routes, security protocols and guard rotations. all that remained were the access codes.[break][break]

she’d move on to the next place after. there was no real home – but she hardly wanted to tell caleb that.[break][break]

the waitress arrived, and nina’s eyes pulled away from the alluring blue gaze across from her to mirror back a bright smile. she ordered a negroni, with a charming please and thank you, before her attention returned to caleb again.[break][break]

except for the fact she was fighting a massive terastallized dragon, after her negroni had just exploded with all the rest of the bar she’d grown fond of. such was life in hoenn.[break][break]

castelia glowed even brighter, leaving a trail of fluorescent pink in her wake as her tail swung around to deliver a powerful dragon hammer into the gyarados’s side.[break][break]

nina held on, stealing a glance at the officer below. she patted her milotic’s side, who dove down, allowing her to slide off before sailing back into battle.[break][break]

”what do you mean you don’t have your pokemon?! aren’t you a cop?” she hurried over, having been sent several paces away by the momentum of her landing. ”what distraction?”[break][break][break]

it was not the first unpleasant time she'd been stepped on while sunbathing by someone not looking where they were going. however, it was the first time some oblivious asshole had tumbled over her covered in cheese.[break][break]

nina's fingers splayed in disgust, and she might've started shouting at him – but then she saw his face, and all she could manage was a gasp of disbelief, and his name, almost silent as it slipped out. ”slevin?”[break][break]

questions poured in. was it really him? where had he been for seven years? why was he covered in cheese?[break][break]

”oh my gods.”[break][break]

she jumped up, eyes wide as wingulls rushed in for a taste. when one came close enough, without thinking, she shot out a punch, knocking the bird off course and down to the ground. she blinked, rather surprised she’d managed it, though it quickly scrambled across the sand and took off back into the air again.[break][break]

”kipkip! help!”[break][break]

leaving the water's edge, a mudkip charged as quickly as his little legs would carry him. just in time, a protect flashed around them, several wingulls crashing into it all at once.[break][break][break]

[attr="class","body"]nina did not get the reference, but assumed jace was a character of some sort, perhaps one whose curiosity often led them in over their head. her eyes lingered on the brave skuntank, and she imagined it being scooped up out of the water with a net, fur slicked down to whatever mysterious physique it was hiding under all the fluff. what did a wet skuntank look like?[break][break]

“a humanoid figure…” she repeated, her eyes returning to cassandra with concern for her vanished partner. ”like a megalopolan?”[break][break]

she recalled the trip to the ultra deep sea with a few others, several months prior, where they’d seen undead megalopolans aboard a wrecked spaceship. without a doubt, it had been one of the most harrowing nightmares of her life, second only to sharpedo and bear attacks. had been eaten by alien zombies?[break][break]

suddenly, she felt conflicted. cassandra was clearly capable, and nina did not want to face zombies by herself while valiantly attempting to recover a random accomplice she’d never met before that day.[break][break]

”really?” kids were crazy. she peered into the dark, where the glow of her milotic didn’t quite reach. there was heartbeat, a strange muffled thump against the silence. ”you’re not scared?”[break][break]

her eyes returned to cassandra. ”i do need to find my friend. you probably shouldn’t, but if you want to tag along, i won’t stop you.”[break][break][break]

and, he was gone. nina sighed, bringing the negroni to her lips and glancing around at what specimens were left for conversation. before she could strike another one up, however, that same unovan voice came bleeding through the walls.[break][break]

”look!” a patron down the bar who’d been six pints deep pointed to a streetside window. ”gyarados! and it’s tera… tera–” someone else chimed in, ”it’s a dang terraform! move, move!”[break][break]

the bar devolved into chaos, screaming and scrambling. for a moment, nina sat wide-eyed like a deerling in headlights, before jumping up too and making for the back exit.[break][break]

”shit shit shit shit–“[break][break]

before she made it out the door, brick and mortar exploded fantastically, a hyper beam slicing through the bar like a hot knife through butter. Luckily, nina managed to be off to one side of it – more fortunate than a few others.[break][break]

dust and debris plumed, obscuring the aftermath from the street. a moment later, she rose from the rubble on the back of an illumina milotic. it too terastallized in a glimmering fairy pink.[break][break]

she waited for avery to stand before going back to their rather leisurely exploration. around a corner, they came upon a toolbox and she went for it.

“nah, not really much of a garbage collector,” she said as she pulled out a drill, testing it out with a smirk at avery before setting it aside. “my thing is getting to know people. getting to know what they know.”

it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great either. despite her practicing and attempts to steer, the mantine had a mind of its own, spinning forward in the wrong direction and nearly throwing her off its back in surprise.[break][break]

nina decided they would practice on smaller waves for a while. roughly an hour later, after a quick break on the shore, she returned with her partner to deeper water, heading for a big wave worthy of the magikarp splash.[break][break]

”you can do it. back, back, left.”[break][break]

she ran a hand over the mantine’s left pectoral fin before holding on, and they ramped into the air.[break][break]

nina found herself momentarily distracted by the interaction between nearby fish pokemon and her illumina milotic. more than just the luvdisc, a horsea too drifted closer for a better look, mesmerized.[break][break]

had it not been for looking that way, she would likely not have noticed the sparkle of the crystal lodged just past her pokemon. she collected it and swam to the surface to inspect its hue.[break][break]
