she shook her head. how had she been paired with this guy? “idiot,” she grumbled, releasing him and hissing when his shirt caught her nail. the acrylic length was still hanging, bent backwards painfully. stepping away, she waved it a couple of times, as though it might help with the throbbing in her finger. it never did.[break][break]

his whisper didn’t receive response, only a rough sigh. not typically a smoker, she found herself craving nicotine. [break][break]
after a moment of pacing, her hands went up and then back down to her sides with a resigning pat. [break][break]

her suspicions about sharpedos were confirmed, and then made worse with the addition of other things she’d not considered. a long-manicured hand wandered up to her mouth idly, lingering there with anxiety. “shit,” she muttered. [break][break]
she continued to gawk, and then, catching the direction his eyes were traveling, something in her own suddenly shifted sharply. her head cocked to the side, and sarcasm cut through the sea breeze at him. “would you like me to do another turn for you?”[break][break]
when he instructed her, and warned of freezing tits, she responded, “great.” and she couldn’t help but wonder, why my tits specifically? but then she simply sighed, and the mask was put on as recommended.
she went into the water with them, attentive of her descent, slow and steady, watching him and staying close.[break][break]
indeed, it was a bit nippy.[break][break]
they had a distance to swim before they’d get close enough for nina’s performance. would they make it safely?

as soon as she heard footsteps behind her, her own quickened. but when she looked over her shoulder, she slowed to slap him on the his. her voice was also a bit shrill.[break][break]

then, she grabbed him by the arm, willing him in the direction of an alleyway if she could manage.[break][break]
“holy shit.”[break][break]
she was livid.[break][break]
“if i go to jail, i swear, it’s your ass.”

i’m asking, she thought. a wave of attitude swelled in her eyes, but her attention followed his instruction to the oxygen tank anyways. [break][break]
what was psi? pieces of air? another thing she wanted to know, but was too embarrassed to ask.[break][break]
she did her best to listen, and hopefully, luckily, retained enough to survive. her body rocked a little off balance when he moved her, and she grumbled something about ‘just—tell me—’ but turned willingly, arms raised in a t-pose. “ok.”[break][break]
his warnings had been a little terrifying, but it wasn’t like she could back down from the job. she blinked at him, definitely unsure.[break][break]
“guess so.” fuck these people, honestly. “thanks.”[break][break]
devon co. had been shipping things into the city, and currently, they sat a dive away, docked in a vessel they were meant to sneak onto. she had no idea what those things were, but she’d create a distraction while king secured them.[break][break]
vague, with plenty of creative freedom.[break][break]
her eyes shifted towards him, and to the scar on his large chest. what had earned him that? rocket was full of murderers. real bad guys—not just thieves, like her. what was he going to do to the devon co. crew?[break][break]
“so, i’ll just… act like something bit me in the water and make a scene, and then hopefully you’ll be able to sneak on board while they’re worrying about me…” she tried to keep the nerves from her face and failed. “that work for you?”

having only been on the submarine once, she’d spent most of her fresh career in rocket thus far on the organization’s outskirts. until the takeover of sootopolis, rocket had retained a sense of mythos to her. being in the city really was making her feel like she was part of the bigger thing.[break][break]
lately, she’d been put up to riskier and riskier business. THEO BECKETT ’s warning had replayed in her head many times. what had she gotten herself into? today, she was a pirate—or something like that.[break][break]
she finagled with diving gear, and after turning pieces around several wrong ways, she scrunched her face and huffed, blowing blue hair out of her face.[break][break]
“gonna be honest,” she started sarcastically. “i have no idea what the hell i’m doing.”

right as the polo shirted register attendant had arrived to her rescue, valentine’s call of victory entered through the doorway as well. her eyes went wide as saucers, and she mentally scrambled for a sharp turn that might keep her on the road to a night in her own bed.[break][break]
“you’re being robbed?” she gasped, and then shrieked again, face mortified. “what kind of place is this?!” [break][break]
the worker looked briefly confused, before putting a finger up to his lips to quiet her, as though their cover wouldn’t have already been blown.[break][break]
realizing he wouldn’t be the type to fight back, nina’s fist balled up as much as it could, cracking a nail as it went into the man’s face. although it wasn’t a terribly solid punch, it was enough to stun him in place a moment. she bolted around him, ekans slithering near her feet.[break][break]
on her way past the front, she hardly glanced up at valentine. instead, she walked briskly out the door and around the corner of the building, away. she would leave him there, if he couldn't get a clue.[break][break]
the worker left the bathroom holding his nose in shock.

the scent of bergamot and osmanthus blossom wafted on a breeze, tousling long hair. mirror-shine claws swiped it from her eyes so that she could behold him there, sipping on his juice. it didn’t make her uncomfortable, but she did find him immediately strange, and it showed in the way she pursed her lips.[break][break]

”mhm.” she stared at him judgmentally a beat longer before: ”register’ll be open in twenty seconds.”[break][break]

with that, she moved past him. the door opened, bell chiming. she strode to the restroom. after only moments, a shrill scream could be heard throughout the building.[break][break]

“snake!” the restroom door ripped open, and she was in full panic. “there’s a snake in here!”[break][break]

the clerk looked up from his phone, making a face and cursing something, and then leaving the counter unattended to investigate.
