”nina,” a voice called again. "asriel", she imagined it might call to him too, but he said he didn’t hear it. she looked towards her partner, as though to try and detect the truth. when she decided he wasn’t messing with her, she faced onward again.[break][break]

”hm. this place talks. maybe you’ll hear it, the deeper we go. it’s all in your head, though. remember that.”[break][break]

dark grew darker, a pool of shadow ahead of them. she didn’t stop at the trench’s steep edge. both she and her fox stepped off it casually, in a way that might be alarming to anyone not familiar with the realm. however, instead of plummeting violently, they floated gently downward into the abyss as though it were water.[break][break]

she assumed asriel would follow.[break][break]

with a crank that took some effort, the window went down. the air there was an acquired taste of filth, but for now, she enjoyed it, part of a gritty experience that smelled like a good action/crime flick.[break][break]

soon, they had company. she turned in her seat to watch them, heart racing like the wheels underneath. her arm snuck around to release her carracosta into the back.[break][break]

”nins?” she hadn’t been called that before, though to be fair, she hadn’t often used her real name until recently.[break][break]

the moment passed, and she reluctantly rolled her window up again, this time without protest. parker was decidedly in charge now.[break][break]

”duck down. we’re being stealthy,” she told her tortoise, patting it on the head, and it did as told, withdrawing into its shell.[break][break]

counting the bikes that appeared one after another, she asked, ”when does it begin? is there like, a starting line with flags and stuff?”[break][break]

after kindly being escorted by Josh Devlin westward, she arrived conveniently on route 114 – where she’d been ultimately headed after a peek at the color-sapped phenomena of mt. chimney on the way.[break][break]

she’d landed on the back of a large gyarados, returning it to its ball and opting for something less imposing to afford them at least some level of stealth through the route.[break][break]

perra’s greeting was met with a pause, and nina’s smile hiked up at the corner. ”yeah, sure.” her eyes fell away to their stony environment as she approached closer, lips pressing to conceal her amusement.[break][break]

it did not last for long. this woman was delightfully intense.[break][break]

nourishment. ”mhm.” she smiled back again, stifling a chuckle. ”well, i’m nina. it’s nice to meet you.” her gaze flicked to the silicobra coiled beneath green hair. ”love snakes. does it have a name?”[break][break][break]

the diglett approached, intrigued until it turned away at last second. perhaps the dance was not right, or the coral was unsatisfactory. it darted off, hurrying to catch up with its kin in the brush without a glance back.[break][break]

”aw. better luck next time,” nina assured the rejected wugtrio, before looking at its trainer and suggesting, ”let’s check inside.”[break][break]

or maybe it was an order. it was getting late, and though she rather liked poking around creepy places, it was a little too real when several powerful people had already gone missing.[break][break]

she knew what it was like to lose a friend. sometimes, she missed NIKO MANNER and the rest of the manner gang that had fallen apart. where had @jessica gone?[break][break]

the thought of them was like a cloud casting over sunlight, but it moved on quickly, her eyes bright. ”you will.” she told him, as though it were prophetic.[break][break]

”those are beautiful names. maybe i’ll have to look into some mythology, then.” she had thought of picking yet another horror movie character for its namesake, but perhaps some beast of greater legend better suited the serpent beneath her.[break][break]

when the master of faster pointed out the oncoming threats, prompting them onward, she saw it as an opportunity.[break][break]

harcourt. the devourer’s brother. interesting.[break][break]

”hi,” she smiled. there was a look of familiarity to it, as though they’d met before, and it was funny that he’d introduce himself again. the gaze lingered, before she turned away towards the wailord without offering a name back. maybe she’d forgotten, staring into his eyes the way she had been.[break][break]

”i think we can manage that,” she called over her shoulder, as a hand slid over the giant blue scales of her companion. ”mega evolve, gyarados.”[break][break]

the keystone on her anklet glowed, casting a rainbow of colors across the sand along with the shifting silhouette beside her. the gyarados roared as it settled into its mega form, sinking more like the beached wailords that lined the shore.[break][break]

”whenever you’re ready!” she grinned back at caleb.[break][break]

as they continued to explore, the sun soon began to set, cooling off gold-burned edges of the overgrown foliage. before they could make it back to the entrance of the plant, they would hear the sounds of diglett making their way home for the evening.[break][break]

a line of them crossed in their path, and one stopped to look over at the wugtrio, similarly charmed by it.[break][break]

once safe, she set togepi on the ground, hands on her knees to catch her breath. although team rocket’s rigorous training routines kept her in shape, she’d been running for her life.[break][break]

she looked over with concern at the teen who’d fallen into the grass. she seemed mostly fine except… was that a burn?[break][break]

”yeah, i’m fine. don’t worry about me.” she waved a hand, still panting a little before she straightened. ”cass, right? are you okay? looks like one of them got you...”[break][break]

she smiled more at his introduction. mauville’s master of faster. she’d seen that name around, on shirts and merchandise and television. celebrities were just people, though, expected to keep up an endless performance.[break][break]

about kyle’s death, her smile wavered. ”maybe they got it wrong. if you believe he’s alive, there’s still hope, right?” the look on her face warmed again, reassuring.[break][break]

still, even if she knew it was silly, she hoped dane was right, or if not, that it was still something harmless and that they’d be back unscathed sooner than later.[break][break]

her searching paused to glance at the wugtrio that emerged. very cute. she smiled at it, and then at dane — it was not what she’d been expecting — before her attention returned to gold-edged grasses.[break][break]
