when he landed, she took it as a sign the sand was safe again, and descended back to the desert terrain for a closer look and a friendlier hello.[break][break]

her smile dropped a bit, then, remembering their champion. ”it’s a shame about what happened. i hope the league’s able to find him soon.”[break][break]

cass was just a kid, by the looks of it. late teens; maybe even a student. hopefully, a full team meant she’d been training for a while, and they’d both make it out of there alive.[break][break]

she nodded, echoing, ”no worries! but once this electrode’s down, we should probably make a break for it, in case the others wake up.”[break][break]

there were surely far too many in the swarm to contend with, even with full parties.[break][break]

as starmie neared the electrode, nina called out, ”give it space, starmie. power gem!”[break][break]

its gemstone glowed, sparkling like stars and striking the electrode from afar with bright, celestial power.[break][break]

the sparking electric-type dropped to the ground – and promptly began a rollout towards them.[break][break]

”look out!”[break][break]

starmie dodged, and the rollout continued, coming back around, and heading for the next target – perhaps cass’s mr rime.[break][break][break]

she didn’t question his lie; didn’t detect it. she returned it with one of her own, ”me either.” although it was close enough to the truth that it might as well have been. she’d been born far away, but she didn’t remember, no matter how hard she tried.[break][break]

”maybe one day, right?” she could only imagine that anyone who’d been stuck in the same place forever would desire to see the world, at least for a little while.[break][break]

as they went deeper, she heard a voice in the dark ahead.[break][break]

and they’d only sent two of them. as much as she’d trained, and as much as she enjoyed exploring, she didn’t have much faith in her ability to tackle whatever it was that might’ve been keeping the real muscle down – unless they were just lost somewhere.[break][break]

surely that was not the case.[break][break]

”nina.” she gave a short smile, but it didn’t quite reach her rosy, anxious eyes. ”do you think we should go inside, or look around out here first?”[break][break]

she wasn’t sure who was in charge between the two of them, or if it even mattered. maybe dane was better at detective work.[break][break][break]

as nina and her gyarados were concealed in swirling sand, they might have looked in great peril. after a second, violet and indigo flashed from within like lightning. the gyarados wound upward, flinging sediment as it performed its dragon dance.[break][break]

verte unleashed the scalding dragon breath, and they were hit with uncomfortable heat. nina held arms over her head as they were pelted with more sand from all around, before a waterfull cooled them and washed it all downward long enough to fly free.[break][break]

they escaped in a warm mist, the water steaming and evaporating quickly from the heat. from above, she lingered, noting the threats were fleeing. after watching them briefly, she cast her gaze down at the ranger.[break][break]

”thanks!” and then, ”what were you doing out here, anyways?” probably his line, but she was curious. all that reading about dragons had been interesting.[break][break]

noticing its audience grow, the togepi giggled and waggled the nubs of its arms. it seemed oblivious to the gravity of their predicament, or maybe it just didn’t care.[break][break]

static sparked over the surface of the electrode, catching nina’s focused eye even as the other trainer stepped into dangerous territory.[break][break]

”hey!” she greeted, still locked in a staring contest with their foe. ”sounds good. i think we could probably use a hand here anyways – but look out for the voltorb in the grass.”[break][break]

there were many hidden, likely to wake up soon, if they didn’t simply explode during the battle that was about to ensue.[break][break]

the electrode began to charge its attack, not waiting for introductions. as the starfish glowed with its cosmic power, nina stole a glance at their new company.[break][break]

”i have mostly water-types. hope you guys can hold your own.”[break][break]

something else approached, louder than the desert spirit’s song. she did her best to peer through the sandstorm that picked up around them, looking for the threat under the veil of her sleeve.[break][break]

it was startlingly difficult to see anything – but then came the boomburst, like a bomb going off too close.[break][break]

”ah!”[break][break]

she ducked lower against her gyarados’s scales instinctively, feeling the shockwave roll over them. it whipped around to face in the attack’s, unbothered by the sand that collected in its fearsome snarl.[break][break]

the green of flygon wings flashed between the streaks of gold around them. in a clearing made by the attack, she spotted a ranger atop a particularly large one. what was he doing?[break][break]

”hey!” she called, and smoothed a hand over the side of her gyarados to placate it. ”it’s alright. he’s probably friendly. hopefully.”[break][break]

As she waved, however, one of the angered flygon took the gesture as another threat. the sandstorm picked up around her and the gyarados, concealing them in a dangerous sand tomb.[break][break]

the bioluminescence of plants glowed, lining the pulsating walls in brilliant patterns and textures. were they really plants at all, or was it just a trick of the eye? of the mind?[break][break]

she’d heard that too. experienced it even – that the ultra deep sea spoke to people in strange ways.[break][break]

”it's kind of like the woods near ballonlea. i’ve only seen photos, though.” she looked over at her partner for the day. ”ever been outside of hoenn? normal places, i mean. not the rifts.”

she’d been flying over the desert, towards mt. chimney out of pure curiosity to see the aftermath of MATIAS SILPH ’s frenzy when she heard it: a beautiful song, and her gyarados heard it too.[break][break]

it drew them down out of the sky and towards the sand, and it wasn’t until they reached the ground, and felt the whip of a coming storm that she realized the spell they were under.[break][break]

flygon, the desert spirit, as told in the draconology document she’d read recently. it had lured them in, and it must have been strong to pick such a hulking opponent. perhaps it was a group, protecting their territory.[break][break]

”get ready. i think we might be under attack.”[break][break]

a growl rumbled beneath her. the gyarados sensed it too.[break][break]

war approached – the first she would fight in since her recruitment. though her strength had grown in rocket, her nerves were building.[break][break]

aiming to train hard at a disadvantage, she gathered her strongest water-types and went north of dewford, into the greenery of route 102.[break][break]

it was not long before she heard the growl of thunder without rain. an electrode grinned menacingly as it guarded a family of sleeping voltorb. she realized they were many, littered around in the tall grass like waiting bombs.[break][break]

”be careful, guys. don't bump into any of them and we'll be fine.”[break][break]

maybe this wasn't such a good idea...[break][break]

it was clear there would be no getting away without a fight. while her starmie rolled forward to claim the battle, nina released a togepi into her arms for luck, bouncing it a little to brighten its mood.[break][break]

”there, togepi! look how silly it looks!” she whispered, and the egg trilled and grinned, charming the sparking voltorb briefly.[break][break]

the first day, nina had not particularly worried about most of her missing colleagues. wherever they were, they were surely handling themselves and would be back soon enough.[break][break]

the second day, however, a voice began to whisper in the back of her mind that they would not return. THEO BECKETT , Elisabeth Fiorelli , and even the less familiar Cillian Quinn , along with most of the upper brass: all missing. where would rocket be without them?[break][break]

and where would it leave her, if they fell to the league’s coming siege because their avatars and beasts and sense of order were gone? right back where she'd been before, most likely.[break][break]

it was that thought got her moving, taking off from other work she’d been assigned in dewford to touch base with the growing search party.[break][break]

where could they be?[break][break]

anxiously, she waited for a partner that had been sent to meet her at the edge of the island of sea mauville's decommissioned research facility. an arbok remained close by, shiny skin glistening as it basked under the tropical sun.[break][break]
