curious pokemon were attracted to the illumina milotic’s glow. a few luvdisc gathered, swimming along beside the glowing river serpent.[break][break]

in the pulsating light it cast across the floor, nina spotted a dive ball and went to retrieve it. it wasn’t the most exciting find, but it would be useful nonetheless. they continued on in search of greater treasure, not tiring yet.[break][break]

she was excited for another year of these events, having assumed they would not happen with more violence looming so close on the horizon. but hoenn had always had a way of pressing on, despite the chaos.[break][break]

diving out of the heat and underneath refreshing waves, she explored the area sectioned off for the diver’s event, searching for the shine of precious stones, or tutors. her milotic illuminated the shadows beneath rocks, aiding her search.[break][break]

avery had a dark past, one she likely shared with many of the rockets that had come into hoenn in preparation for the war. nina listened, her smile fading a bit. the grunt work that day had been surprising enough; she hadn’t expected to also be paired up with one of rocket’s war dogs.

there was pity in her eyes, assuming avery had likely been sent to be at the frontlines of their takeover, whether she liked it or not.

”there must be other things you’re good at besides war and scavenging for scrap metal,” she suggested. ”show them what else you can do. rob a bank, or something. there’s tons of opportunity here; the cops can’t keep up with the crime.”

[attr="class","ninalarson"]nina felt just fine doing the job of a thief. it was what she’d done for as long as she could remember, although generally, she was putting on an act, talking valuables out of peoples’ hands and lips.

but being on one of rocket’s lower rungs meant odd jobs sometimes, even if she’d climbed herself a step or two up the ladder. some work called only for brute force.

robbing for jewels would have much more satisfying.

”beats me. i’m not really much of a tech nerd.”

she watched her partner yank on a piece of metal, once, twice, ouch. nina winced, seeing the blood pool when avery jones opened her palm.

”that you wanted, huh?” her own hand reached for togepi’s pokeball. she released the baby pokemon into her arms, and sppoke softly to it, ”she’s hurt. can you help?” the togepi trilled, and upon being set down, went to work scattering drops of healing life dew around avery’s feet.

”why do they have you doing things like this? most of the feisty ones are preparing for war.”

mega lapras was beautiful, with the ice crystals that levitated around its body, sparkling in the summer sun. nina felt a cool breeze on her face as its ice beam froze the water against the shore, a momentary respite from the heat.[break][break]

”your turn, gyarados,” she called, and the sea monster roared toothily and summoned a twister across the ice that pulled the wailord sharply back out to sea on their frozen ramp. she saw them splash gratefully in the distance before disappearing into the depths.[break][break]

the work was done within hardly a couple of minutes – far less time than she had predicted she’d be there, figuring it out.[break][break]

”well, that was easy.” she smiled again at caleb, patting the scales of her gyarados and standing clear of the slippery ice that began to perspire under the sun. ”we make a good team!”[break][break]
