In all honesty, he actually had expected to get blasted.[break][break]

So focused on the one possibility, Pace forgot that birds did other things sometimes and was thrown off by an embarrassingly obvious reaction. He didn't fall too far, but he did fall fast, into the soft and strong arms of Lia's Ursaring. As though it had never even happened at all, Pace begins to laugh, letting himself relax into the bear pokémon's furry paws.[break][break]

"Okay? I'm fine! Just pissed her off a little, no worries"[break][break]

Always so obnoxiously, painfully chill.[break][break]

"Thanks, bud" He gets to his feet and gives Rin a pat pat on the arm, then puts his hands on his hips and looks back up at the ruffled Toucannon. Since climbing right up there didn't work... he actually had time to think and process before running in with his brain turned onto moron mode.[break][break]

"...Seems like it'd be best to deal with mama from a distance, huh?" It's so obvious it makes him grin down at the ranger beside him. "You have any grass-types on you?"[break][break]

If only she were a smaller bird, something much more easy to deal with, then they'd be sorted. A Chatot; a Delibird, even a Swellow. Instead, they had to try and not get exploded by the ten billion degrees-hot beak of a large, pissed-off new mother.

Was it pride? He'd be more likely, in public, to call it stupidity. To say he was too stupid, forever haunted by having a jock brain, too much of a moron who doesn't care enough to try and hide from the dangerous mafia he worked for. In truth, it probably was pride. It was easy for Pace to laugh and play the loveable idiot extrovert, but he was well aware of his fatal flaw. Maybe that's why he pretended it didn't exist.[break][break]

Too damn proud to hide.[break][break]

"What did you want me to do? To jump in front of her myself? You know well enough that if I'd have tried anything, they'd have killed her and me either way. And if I told you..."[break][break]

...and what if he had told Mars? He would have tried to stop it and failed and blamed himself, or he might have succeeded and ended up being killed or punished for the transgression. The Marzáns always got what they wanted, and they wanted Cosima dead.[break][break]

And despite everything, Pace could live with Mars hating him. It hurt and dug inside him like maggots, tore at his skin - for so many years, Mars was his everything. But he could live with it in comparison to making Mars hate himself - and perhaps he did, knowing he couldn't save her. But if Pace had told Mars of the plan and they were still unable to save her... the pain would be unbearable.[break][break]

Yet now, Pace was stuck quietly killing himself. He'd never expected to see Mars again, so he had resigned himself to sleepless nights and the guilt of a dead woman and child on his soul, a woman who was once his dear friend, a child who shared the genes of the two closest people to him. But now he was forced to explore these things in a greater detail after two years of pushing it away. And now he was leaving again.[break][break]

Pace couldn't watch him leave. There was a reason he'd left in darkness - he'd always been awful at goodbyes.[break][break]

As the pokémon at his old friend's side glare at him, Pace accepts the fact that they may well jump at him or snap, and reaches forward to grab Mars' arm. Whether it was the Glaceon, the Sylveon, or Mars himself who bit back at him, Pace couldn't let him leave like this.[break][break]

"Please don't go. Please."

Between everyone putting their opinions in and, for a brief time, the Thwackey's tapping, the room had gotten a lot busier. Not to mention everyone's pokémon taking up the space and it felt a lot less empty and lot more like an actual crime scene. If it wasn't a potentially dangerous situation, it might have even been super duper exciting.[break][break]

Pace leans against one of the walls once he's finished popping floor balls back onto their rightful spots of the bookshelves.[break][break]

"I can't imagine it just broke out on it's own, even if it is pissed off and strong. If they were strong and dangerous pokémon, people'd know so and keep 'em in stronger balls. Right?"[break][break]

Kaida seemed to think the best course of action was to go after it, and Pace didn't doubt she was right - if the ex-Champion's pokémon really were this strong, scary and emotionally compromised, even one of them could cause some serious issues for wild pokémon or even people, depending on how far it gets.[break][break]

He nods and gestures for Neith to head on out, her big bird self awkwardly moving through the hole in the wall before taking flight outside of it.[break][break]

"Are any of you guys acquainted, by the way? I'm Pace, if you didn't already know. Figured we should know eachother's names if we all get lost in the woods or something"[break][break]

TLDR: Pace agrees that the gang should head out in search of the escapee pokémon. He introduces himself to the group in case they get lost and need to find eachother.

What did he find indeed? A beautiful and comfortable place to live and work, for starters, but Pace knew the game well enough that that wasn't what he was going to say, since it certainly wasn't the answer that his Marzán acquaintance was searching for.[break][break]

He was aware of the young man opposite him looking at him though, intensely despite it being so calm. And he kind of loved it, honestly. Pace would be the first to admit he loved being looked at, whether it was in admiration or something akin to being sized up. The stranger opposite him's gaze was hard to read - it could've been either, and Pace really wouldn't have minded either way.[break][break]

"I think you know the answer to that. Unless you're fishing for compliments?" Pace's little challenge - would the young man take offense, or could he take a ribbing? Did the Marzán blood in his veins that ran deep strokes of gold and aristocracy through his body permit joking?[break][break]

His answer comes, just faintly, in the offer of a drink - it seems he isn't so Marzán as to not break the rules with the staff. It could have easily been a test or something, from what he'd picked up through rumours and his short time working with them, the family were powerful and undoubtedly packing their fair share of danger. But Pace liked the taste of danger, and liked it even more when it came in the form of a beautiful young family heir.[break][break]

"I'd love to"[break][break]

It felt so naughty, just the act of saying yes to a drink. Out here? Where anybody could walk out to join them? It felt wrong in the most deliciously right way, like fucking in the back room of a wedding. He smirks.[break][break]

"Do I get the honour of knowing your name?"

Because he's handsome, and because he's confident, and because he can so very easily say things like these and make them sound believable.[break][break]

Pace feels Percy's foot move away from his, and catches that look in his eye. He nearly sighs but is conscious that that might come across as bratty, getting frustrated that Percy wasn't flirting back, so instead he just smiles at him again.[break][break]

"Ha... no, we don't. Haven't spoken in two years now. It's just one of those things, I guess" He shrugs, gives a sad smile - even when discussing the loss of his long-term best friend, he can't help but smile. It was genuine so often, but now... Pace had to admit, the smile came with a little force. It was hard to beam like usual when thinking about getting your best friend's wife and unborn child killed. You could only smile so hard when bearing that kind of burden.[break][break]

He appreciates, at least, Percy not poking too hard.[break][break]

"Some people might say that getting lost somewhere is the fun part, though. That way you get to see more than you would if you were just following the beaten track, right?" He smirks back and sips in unison.[break][break]

"Anyways, let's not talking about me all night, huh? Whereabouts in Johto are you from?"[break][break]

He wasn't going to let Percy get away from the topic that easily, after all.

He was confident, perhaps even full of himself, but who could blame him when he looked like that? Pace was exactly the same. They had the same way of carrying themselves, the same toned body. The same hunting instincts, perhaps. Pace enjoyed playing the predator, but he was far from afraid of letting himself be prey - sometimes it was more exciting. Especially coming from someone like this young man, who radiated power and presence like a God might.[break][break]

Our glorious villa.[break][break]

Our? Pace raises a brow, just the tiniest amount. He was speaking to a member of the family that employed him, then - should've been able to tell from the shark smile, from the essence of power and money that oozed from him and glistened against his chest like light on marble. The chardonnay sways slightly in the glass at the stranger's gentle pouring.[break][break]

"What brings me here? Hm. Money, a job, those kinds of things. A need to go out in the world and find beautiful things. Seems I found some, hm?" He lets his gaze drift down, perhaps pretending to focus on the chardonnay for a second. He skims his gaze over the other's body as he does so, then returns to meet his golden eyes once more.[break][break]

Mirror images. That olive skin, that brown hair, those golden eyes. Two muses combined - and the spark between them, was this battle, passion, poetry? Perhaps all three.[break][break]

Pace catches the twinkle in Angelo's eye and throws one back, looking up and watching the dragon's sky dance above. Some of the most powerful pokémon in all of the regions were dragon types, and it showed in the Salamences' every movement. Their bodies and muscles flexed and contracted as they sailed the skies as easily as a boat took on the water. It made him smile to see such freedom in one of it's most divine form.[break][break]

"Angelo Vestri" He repeats, feels the gentle hand squeeze and squeezes back, then it clicks. "Right, the plane guy!" It's almost said with the excitement of a kid - flying. It had occupied Pace's mind since he was old enough to know how high the sky rose, how infinitely it stretched. In another life, perhaps, he'd not be far off of Angelo's expertise. To fly like a bird, to pilot a great machine who's only goal is conquering the air. It breathed life into him.[break][break]

He raises a brow and quirks up one side of his smile into a smirk.[break]
"Hanging around?" Pace laughs. "You make it sound like I was creeping about! But yeah, that would've been me. Lia and I are friends"[break][break]

Friends was a funny word for it, but it was the word that Pace used most freely. Friendship. Made things less complicated.[break][break]

"Dragon guy, I assume, then? Considering-" He gestures to the small school of dragons surrounding them "I have a few myself, y'know"[break][break]

Pace knew well enough that money like this, a villa like this, came with a shadow deeper than blood... but he was twenty years old, gym-toned and gorgeous, why did he need to care about any of that?![break][break]

Working as a pool boy wasn't the most glamorous thing in the world, admittedly, but it filled his wallet and allowed him to spend time somewhere like here without having to do all that much. Keep the towels stacked, keep the water clear, and occasionally look longingly at everyone else's cocktails. He knew enough of the Marzáns that he definitely shouldn't drink on the job, nor should he dick about like this were any other summer job. But that they frightened him didn't mean he couldn't enjoy himself.[break][break]

In fact, it seemed he may enjoy himself quite a bit.[break][break]

Carrying a handful of fresh towels out towards the chairs, Pace was dazzled by such a blinding grace that he nearly lost his sight for a moment. Dramatic? Poetic? Immortally as horny as a teenager? All extremely redeeming Pace-esque traits.[break][break]

"I started not too long ago, so don't worry, I haven't been sneaking around behind your back" He smiles back, sunshine meeting starlight. That Unovan accent, stronger back then, spreads thick across his words.[break][break]

He lays a towel down on the chair beside the one the young stranger takes a seat on, but Pace doesn't take his eyes off of him for a moment. The delicate game has begun, it seems - a game Pace knows well. He doesn't let his gaze drip down, not yet - it stays intently on his fellow player's face.[break][break]

"You must have only turned up recently yourself, right? I'd have remembered seeing someone like you before"

This place was a mess.[break][break]

Pace moves in, following alongside his fellow rangers and just behind Kaida. She sets her pokémon out straight away, and he runs the pad of his finger against one of the pokéballs at his own waist as she speaks. She seemed to have taken charge, which Pace didn't mind one bit - an extrovert, yes, but taking charge? Making decisions? He wasn't reliable enough for all that.[break][break]

"Seems someone big escaped, at that" He quips, taking a glance at the great hole in the wall and the stomping prints leading away from the barracks. Whatever had fucked off was big enough to cause quite a mess, considering there were plenty of pokémon that could fit quite snugly in the room. For example...[break][break]

"Neith, let's take a look around" Pace lets out his Pidgeot and begins to search the wreckage with her at his side, as ordered.[break][break]

He gently kicks around some of the rubble, unearthing some loose pokéballs underneath it. Bending to pick one of them up and roll it in his hand for a moment, Pace glances back at the shelves and raises a brow.[break][break]

"Probably fell off of here, right?"[break][break]

He pops the ball he's holding back onto the space where balls once were, and it fits there as snugly as any of the others.[break][break]

TLDR: Pace turns up and happily lets Kaida take over. He looks in the rubble for some of the pokéballs that ended up on the floor and places one back on the bookshelf, summarising they must have been knocked off.

Yeah. That seemed fair.[break][break]

The darkness of that night had seemed so encroaching. Darker than any night had ever been before, like every star and every reflected remnant of sunshine in the moon had been stripped away. Maybe it was some premonition from the gods. Maybe it was his own guilt, hammered like a nail into the viscous fluid of his mind's eye.[break][break]

He'd missed him too much for words, and it's especially hard to miss someone who you abandoned. Such a recurring theme. How many beds has he left, since, in the middle of the night? Empty sheets, nothing left behind. Starless nights filled with something like regret. Maybe it was a curse he could never break from - all those days spent tossing and turning as a pre-teen in bed. Maybe he was never meant to sleep soundly, or alone. Or guilt-free.[break][break]

"I'm not hiding, Mars" Though it sure does seem that way, doesn't it? And as much as he says he's not, he'd be stupid if he wasn't. The syndicate didn't just have power in Sinnoh, after all, and he never stopped using his real name, never disguised himself. Maybe part of him ached for it to all come crawling back, to be held accountable.[break][break]

"It was never worth it." half-whispered, followed up by "I never wanted to run from you", a little louder. It's not a lie. But it feels as dirty as one.[break][break]

He looks at him then, truly, gold on semi-gold - how dark Mars' eyes seemed now. In their youth, Pace could've sworn the golden light shone the same as his own, brightened up the darker parts of those nights they'd spend together. It hurts to try and look away, but hurts more to see the pain that he's caused. There's a reason he always dreamt of flying - nothing can catch him up there.
