As his date's Typhlosion has it's little flare-up, Shepset squeaks in panic from her roost on the table, and Pace pets her back reassuringly. He watches Wolfgang run a hand through his hair and decides to lean his own arm on the table - maybe it'd set his partner a little more at ease.[break][break]

"Not usually so bluntly like that, unless they're looking to get right to the good part. Y'know, no judgement here, but just letting you know"[break][break]

Pace's plan of putting his partner at ease seems to have worked, as Wolfgang begins to talk a little more casually. Less like he's thinking about it. It pulls a smile further across Pace's face. "Preference, hm... I mean, I guess I have some preferences, but for the most point I'm down for anything. Kinda makes me sound like a slut, but hey, might as well be open about it" He laughs.[break][break]

He takes a moment to let his gaze explore Wolfgang's face - he's a good looking guy, for certain. The whole grumpy loner thing works well for him, too.[break][break]

"You know, I'd say you're one of the best looking people here tonight. Lucky me, huh?"[break][break]

Pace, on the other hand, was very good with social situations. He'd been navigating them pretty swiftly for most of his life, whether it was trying to avoid angering his mother, fitting in at school, or working dirty jobs for the Sinnoh syndicate.[break][break]

He could tell that maybe Wolfgang was the type to struggle a little more as he replies, calling his pokémon fat and then calling Pace's dear Pidove fat in turn. Someone else might've been offended, but Pace only beams and nods. "Oh, she's spoilt as hell, yeah."[break][break]

He tries to keep things polite and easy, full of sunny smiles, but what Wolfgang coughs up about big guys tickles him so hard he can't but burst out laughing.[break][break]

"Do I.... wha... big guys?" He grins. "That's a hell of a question to ask someone on our first date. To answer your question, I don't judge either way. Don't people say size doesn't matter nowadays?"

Pace hadn't really had any difficulty choosing which of his babies to take with him today. Shep was the perfect wingwoman - literally, since the whole bird thing, but also she was fat and cuddly and everything the perfect pigeon should be. Who couldn't resist falling in love with her, and by proxy, him?[break][break]

This speed-dating thing was going to be easy as hell to win, which is something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve. Let's ignore the fact that Pace doesn't believe in love and thinks all relationships are fleeting. That's for therapy, and therapy comes right after finding gorgeous strangers to smooch on.[break][break]

He's approached first by a gruff-sounding guy, just as handsome as Pace was hoping for. He stands and smiles, Shepset positioned on the table like a chubby, feathered centrepiece vase. Always one for immediate physical contact, Pace offers the semi-scowling man before him his hand.[break][break]

"Pace" He introduces himself. "Nice to meet you, Wolfgang. Pretty crazy environment here, huh? You look great, by the way."[break][break]

His eye, then, inevitably, is drawn to the Typhlosion that stands just behind Wolfgang like an awkward date or lost child. Pace beams welcomingly at the pokémon, as well. "That's a hell of a Typhlosion you've got there. Big guy!"

As he listens, Pace frowns hard. He hadn't had the opportunity to come into contact with an Ultra Beast himself, yet, and it wasn't particularly high on his to-do list. From what he'd heard, they were dangerous and destructive - pretty understandable considering they were basically aliens in a completely foreign world. [break][break]

He listens to Boruta's hypothesis, and watches Kaida and Elaine converse for a moment, tapping at his chin with one hand and scrunching the other against Neith's soft feathers, focusing on the sensation as he thinks.[break][break]
"I mean, it's suspicious as hell that there's people prints around here, but..." He sighs and looks, also, in the direction of Route 120.[break]
"I'm with Kaida. S'not our job to hunt down some mystery dude who might have something to do with all this. If that really is an Ultra Beast like you say-" He nods in Boruta's direction "-we really can't waste time elsewhere."[break][break]

He rests against Neith, her big bird self holding him up like a doorframe. "But we definitely need to call in that footprint shit, too. Get the police down here or something, because I don't doubt that whoever's disappeared has something to do with all this. Hopefully, the footprints just belonged to some hiker who'd gotten away with no injuries and a good spooking... it would be much easier if there weren't people involved in this bullshit.[break][break]

TLDR: Pace has a good listen to everyone's ideas. He agrees that the gang should report the human prints, but ultimately votes for Route 120 due to the Ultra Beast threat.

It's only been a couple of hours, and yet Pace is already pretty used to that pointed stare. The one that says that was stupid, and you're dumb without quite saying exactly that. It only serves to make him smile back. Pace loved the kind of person who looked down their nose at people, who looked at them like they were morons. He liked to prove people wrong, he liked to flirt with and kiss the kind of people who thought they were better than him. A therapist would probably have a field day with him.[break][break]

As the conversation turns slightly, though, Pace raises his hands. What's that supposed to mean?, Percy says. Seems he touched a nerve, slightly.[break][break]

"Hey now, I'm not saying that to make you or Ecruteak sound like shit. What I mean is... it's traditional. Quiet, right? Got a lot of history, and all that stuff. I feel like that kinda vibe fits with the vibe I get from you. Not in a bad way - if anything, I meant it as a compliment."[break][break]

He smiles. Pace enjoyed chasing and lying and manipulating when he had time for it, but this wasn't one of those times. The problem with telling so many white lies is that when people grow wise to them, they assume everything else you say is also one.[break][break]

"I can imagine it is, yeah. Not a lot of places here that feel that... old, I guess. Everywhere here is so built up - it felt the same in Unova, honestly. Sure, you've got Littleroot, or Pacifidlog, and all that... but it's still a totally different feeling than somewhere like Ecruteak, right? You must miss it."

A chuckle. He wins. Does everything have to be a competition, a prize to be won? For Pace, a little bit, yes. Seeing Percy laugh makes him smile back at him, leaning forward a little, elbows on the table. His body language closes the gap between them - if Percy were to put his hand on the table in turn, Pace would gladly close the gap some more.[break][break]

"I have travelled a lot, but I haven't been to every single town on the planet, Percy" He smirks. "Nor have you, I bet. If I asked you to go to Mio City? Kotobuki?" Though he doesn't doubt that Percy probably would know exactly where they were. He seemed one of those smarmy types who's go well actually...[break][break]

But admittedly, Pace was kind of obsessed with smarmy types.[break][break]

"Ahh... ha. Bells! Like the bell tower? Look at you, making a joke" He laughs to himself "Sorry, that's mean. I have been to Ecruteak - only very briefly, though, on the way through to Goldenrod. I think that makes sense, though. I can see someone like you somewhere like that"

Does he really have a comeback for everything? Most of the time, honestly, yeah. It comes hand in hand with the whole "constant unshaking confidence" thing.[break][break]

Pace isn't blind to the tiniest of smirks at the corner of Percy's lips. It nearly encourages him, hypes up his flirtations, makes him want to say something more blunt, something dirtier. Despite how he prods him and bugs him, though, he has enough respect for Percy to not say something to wind him up here in public.[break][break]

The idea of making Percival Munn (HNN) blush is deliciously tempting enough to nearly distract him from the entire conversation, but he pulls himself back from daydreams in time to catch Percy's answer.[break][break]

"Enju" He repeats back, raising a brow. Of course he calls the city it's native name, not the tourist-friendly one. His mind checks every piece of information on Johto it knows, but he has literally no clue which one Enju is. Which one was Goldenrod? He'd stayed there for a couple months in a bedsit on his way to Hoenn... Kogane? Damnit, not Enju. Instead of covering up his lack of knowledge, Pace laughs.[break][break]

"You'll have to make that one Unovan-friendly for me. I bet it's one of the smaller places, though, right? You don't seem like a big city guy to me."

In all honesty, he actually had expected her to hit him.[break][break]

He beamed back at his pale-haired partner as much as he could when his cheeks were being squished Skwovet-style. So beautiful, so sweet, and so dangerous! The three things he loved most about his dear Lia, obviously.[break][break]

On top of that, so clever, as she releases her trusty Breloom and promptly sets up for angry mama bird to become a much more chilled, much sleepier bird. As the Toucannon rests its weary, spore-y head, Pace puts his hands on his hips and looks up.[break][break]

"Hell yeah! Good thinking, team" He pats Lia on the back in one of those annoying ways that men did.[break][break]

"Guess all that's left is to get her somewhere else, huh? I can head up there and-" He trails off as he meets Lia's eyes, as if pre-empting the telling-off he'd get if he tried to climb back up there and then, somehow, climb back down with the Pikipek in tow.[break][break]

"...Or I can get on Seti and fly up! Much safer, right?" Pace taps the side of his head like he's just said the smartest thing in the world, before taking out his Braviary's pokéball and calling him out in one swift motion. All they needed to do now was get mama and her Pikipeks to somewhere where they wouldn't be an issue to trainers or other curious wild pokémon.[break][break]

Easiest mission ever? Hell yeah! And Pace didn't even snap his back in half like a twig! Sounds like a win, if you ask him.

Both Neith and Pace tilt their head at Kaida as she announces they've been called back. Obviously there was some issue, but they were so close, he could just feel it. It frustrated him - whatever this monster was had caused so much trouble, and now they just had to head back? Ugh.[break][break]

While Kaida focused on a slightly smaller path, lined with some goop and sliced foliage, Pace - as always - saw the larger thing first. He'd never been one for details. Towards Mt. Pyre, the trail of destruction continued. The same claw marks tearing down trees, the same stomped and ripped and torn ground, with clumps of it uprooted at the sides of the path. Pace frowned and knelt by it, turning over a clod of earth in his hand.[break][break]

"If it went that way-" He gestures to the path Kaida's standing before. "-then how come there's all this shit here, too?"[break][break]

Pace turns to face his fellow rangers. "I guess that confirms there's multiple escapees causing trouble, huh? No one pokémon could do all of this by itself, no matter how strong it is."[break][break]

TLDR: Pace notices the damaged path towards Mt. Pyre and hypothesises that there's definitely multiple escaped pokémon monkas

Maybe people would think it was super gross to have their bentos packed by quite literally a bird's beak, but hey, fuck those guys! Meresamun was here to help, and if that meant putting things in her gross Chatot mouth, then put things in her gross Chatot mouth she would![break][break]

Even better, of course, was being able to nibble little pieces here and there. Not much! Just the occasional piece of rice or the odd little bit of omelette. Was eating an omelette as a bird morally wrong? Maybe. But Meresamun didn't have the kind of logical brain to busy herself thinking about things like that - she was just here to do Pace proud![break][break]

After every few munches and every few pecks, she could move the box on and start work on another one. Sausages in this one - not her favourite, not the kind of thing she could sneak a couple bites of. But hey, look at all this rice in here! Whoever ordered this would be stuffed if they had to eat all of that themselves. Really, Meresamun was doing them a favour.[break][break]

If this was all from one attack from one pokémon, things might have been even worse than they had originally assumed. Nothing Pace could think of could do this much damage this quickly, unless it were something ridiculously powerful. He'd heard tales of things like Legendary pokémon being able to cause this much damage, but this was just the pokémon of the former champion. Incredibly powerful, sure, but was it really able to do something like this?[break][break]

He takes a look around as Neith lands beside him, gently nudging her beak against one of the injured and cradling it beneath her wing. The fellow rangers get to work as well, tending to or capturing some of the wounded pokémon in the clearing. Even the trees and dirt were fucked - this was a hell of an attack to unleash in the middle of nowhere.[break][break]

"I know this is one of Bailey's pokémon, but..." He starts to speak up to his comrades as he tends to the scrapes and cuts along a small Poochyena's ribs. "...Could it seriously have done this much damage? In one fell swoop like this?" He shakes his head.[break][break]

"I doubt any of these pokémon posed a threat, I mean, look at them - they're all tiny. Just what the hell is this thing doing...?"[break][break]

TLDR: Pace is like MONKAS at the damage to the local area. He starts to tend to an injured pokémon, and implies that whatever escaped from the barracks can't have done this in self-defence, because all the wild pokémon are small and weak.

[break][break]thread summary: pace, two years after disappearing from the sinnoh syndicate, bumps into his old, dearest friend Martín del Mar . considering he left because he knew they were going to murder mars' wife and unborn child, there's a lot for them to talk about.
[break][break]why is it important?: pace is selfish and prideful, caring very little about people other than himself, but things are different with mars because they've known one another for years and have shared parts of themselves with each other (and with mars' ex-wife) that they hadn't shared with anybody else. pace is learning that sometimes when you make a decision to save your own ass and take the easy way out, the people you hurt don't forgive you. this thread lays some foundations for pace learning that he can't use people and leave them like he always has, and that sometimes actions have consequences.
