A question he asked himself despite the fact that, in the long run, he honestly hadn’t cared. At first, he had his eyes on one thing, and one thing only: making it up to this chick. Being the very person that found himself personally terrorized and victimized by the fox in his hand (he yipped a bit more in defiance at some point, only to fall limp again at another flick), he knew how irked she probably was to be swindled.[break][break]

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, but still, man.[break][break]

So he began to step off at a brisk pace at first, but upon noting her stay within her seat, he’d been swift to turn heel towards her once more; his feet dragging within the sand leisurely and somewhat aimlessly at first as he gauged her. Was she gonna get up? Follow up? Honestly, it was his intention to personally escort her along, but as she remained, and as her words passed through the nearby air, he thought on them for a moment.[break][break]

Contrasting faintly to the friendly smiles that found themselves on his face, his lips tugged a faint bit more; a lofty and toothy smirk touching down upon his expression with a sliver of amused mischief. He stopped within his tracks to eye her for a while longer, pressing his tongue against the inner wall of his cheek in thought before pacing back over.[break][break]

He crouched down beside her, raising a brow with a spark within his eye.[break][break]

”...Tell ya what, then, Cuz,” he started off. ”We can start ya off with a couple drinks, then—still my treat, still my treat—and have that ‘lil meal together once I’m done. Get ya somethin’ to sip on while ya wait for me.”[break][break]

He gave her a brief wink, his grin broadening.[break][break]

”Ya get a show, and we can chat a bit over dinner later. Win-win, am I right~?”[break][break]

He gave a brief look and a furrowing of the brows towards the Nickit in his hold, gently flicking its snout (to which it gave a gentle grumble before hanging limp, disgruntled) before peering back towards her again, already beginning to coast the edge of her seat. ”C’moooon~. I ain’t takin’ no for an answer, either,” he added, beckoning her along.[break][break]

He glanced over his shoulder at the mention of the dancing, however, before turning back towards her and waving a hand again— that time in a more dismissive manner.[break][break]

”And nah, I’ll be stickin’ around. I’m actually in it,” he added. With the selfsame hand, he gestured down to his attire. ”Y’know, not like that’s obvious enough, but yeah. ”Family’s got roots in Alola, so whenever somethin’ like this comes up, I tend to lend a hand~.”[break][break]

Honestly, he heard there was a swarm, but he hadn't expected this.[break][break]

Like poison ivy ascending upon the lengths of a trellis, the walls were speckled with so many Glimmora that clung to the cracks as far as the eye could see. It was a while since he'd seen any, altogether (the last time was, what...years ago? at least a decade?) in his last trip to Paldea to see family.[break][break]

Eh. Like that mattered, though.[break][break]

"Hey, Ranga," he called, glancing over his shoulder towards a Tyranitar that hulked in following.[break][break]

She gave a low noise, tilting her head.[break][break]

"Sic 'em for me, yeah~?"[break][break]

A casual request that left the beast staring at him for a little while, but lo and behold, she followed through with a few Stomping Tantrums to cull the numbers— something he waited for with an uncharacteristic patience before picking a Glimmora out and tossing a Pokeball at it.[break][break]

Figures the little bastard had to scamper off right before showtime.[break][break]

Normally, he didn’t have to worry about his Pokemon running off and wreaking havoc while he was out and about— but obviously, that night was different. Toa was already out and rearing to go, just like he always was whenever his trainer decided to gear up for festivities like this. A few other Pokemon were already tending to some patrons, too (somewhere, there’d be an Aggron and Tyranitar hulking around, offering drinks in their stubby hands), but there was one Pokemon—one, goddamned thief—that apparently decided to have a moment.[break][break]

So, enter stage right: a singular Rocket (but that was a secret— hushity hush) as he jogged through the sand. He left his staves behind at the stage, but by the way he was dressed, it was more than obvious that he was part of at least one source of entertainment.[break][break]

Fuck the entertainment, though, since there were more pressing matters at hand— and ones that he found a bit too late. The familiar sight of a ginger furred creature met his eye, and as he shifted his gaze between him and the person he assumed to be personally victimized by his reign of terror, he breathed a low, growling sigh before going to pick his Pokemon up.[break][break]

”Heeeeeey, hi, so sorry about that— he started off with a faint, stressed wheeze as he squinted down at the fox he’d plucked off the ground. ”He’s a bit of a klepto— uh. I’m gonna be needed in a sec, but I can buy you another one of those if ya want, Cuz. Y’know. Least I can do—”[break][break]

Paying the end interpretation little mind, however, he merely moved along with the conversation, tilting his head within the face of her later murmurings. The grin upon his lips faltered faintly as a glimmer of equal parts curiosity and confusion entered his gaze, tilting his head softly.[break][break]

”...Huh. That so, though?”[break][break] he hummed idly.[break][break]

A brief silence overtook him before he shrugged.[break][break]

He lowered his own menu against the table before them within an absentminded manner, gently and slightly crossing his forearms atop one another as if in faux judgment (spoiler alert: it wasn’t faux). ”I dunno… A nerd? Shut-in? Maybe even a mix of anything and all of the above?”[break][break]

He shrugged, pressing his tongue against the inside of his cheek in amused thought.[break][break]

”...Y’know how to laugh, though, so I guess there’s some hope~,” he added sarcastically.[break][break]

He eyed her for a little while longer, his fingers absentmindedly tapping against the wood and plastic of the table and menu he’d set down before quickly slipping the latter between them, once more. His gaze, however, remained upon her, despite it.[break][break]

His fingers tapped against his forearms all the while before he inhaled deeply and breathed a low, longer sigh soon after.[break][break]

After several more moments of silence, however—as well as a faint lean to glean a better angle—he just nudged the person by him before eying her and her Metagross as she mounted atop it, all while recalling his Aggron.[break][break]

"You're some kinda fucked up, y'know that?" he sighed, lifting himself onto the space made for him. "Like, I fuck with it, and I'm takin' ya up on that offer, but still."[break][break]

"Less work for me, either way. Paygrade ain't worth the extra effort."[break][break]

He pursed his lips curiously, still eying the further extents of the tunnel while nodding towards his companion to continue his Protect. Better safe than sorry, after all.[break][break]

Just another skirmish before he moved on. That was the plan.[break]
It was always the plan in some way or another.[break][break]

Plans, however, always proved to find themselves ran askew, however— and those moments, altogether, seemed to be no exception as the battle raged on. Though the mass of flaming rocks seemed to evade his intended target, the man still held the gun he'd armed himself up and towards the ever-changing and molding skies above them all, firing off towards the Leaguer and his flying companion as they neared closer and closer.[break][break]

He'd only spared a moment to glance about his surroundings, but all in all, a moment had been all he needed to catch the faintest wind of a familiar figure; one that seemed to tense up before immediately sprinting off into the unknown again upon noticing and recognizing him amidst the chaos.[break][break]

Them.[break][break]

Still around in this goddamn hellscape, and still more than intent on running tail, it seemed. For a moment, the Rocket glared to and fro between the ones he'd engaged with, as well as the one running off once more. He'd been quick to debate within his head, only barely noticing his Drakloak, after barely managing to lunge forth at the Kingdra before her with a swift Dragon Rush, be blasted from the vortex.[break][break]

He noted her scrambling in pain for a short while, giving faint, stubborn whimpers and mewls before ultimately allowing her head to rest.[break]
He glanced around once more before clicking his tongue.[break][break]

"Fuck today, for fuck's sake..." he hissed under his breath, immediately recalling both of his companions—wounded and otherwise, alike—before firing off at the Salamence a few more times at its wings.[break][break]

In those same moments, he sent out another Pokemon—a Scizor—before giving it a foreign tongued command to fly off and after the selfsame target that originally led them into the dreamscape he'd grown so vengeful against.[break][break]

No mind to him, either way, though— save for the growing sense of annoyance he felt brewing within him with each word shouted down at him. It was just heroism, heroism, heroism— and for what? Some sort of personal hero complex? For the greater good?[break][break]

Whatever it was, it fell on deaf ears as the Rocket just gave a low, groaning sigh under his breath, watching carefully upon the rocks coated betwixt sparks and flame before they were hurled back down. Already lithe on his feet, he began to sprint to the side in order order to avoid the fiery rain upon him, calling for his Tyranitar to follow in tow.[break][break]

For the most part, she seemed unscathed— but a roar and a notable singe upon her stony scales had been all he needed to see to know she hadn't evaded all of the onslaught.[break][break]

Nevertheless, the Leaguer had so helpfully passed the metaphorical ball back, and so with that, the Tyranitar merely glared across all the wreckages before him; enflamed, and scorching, and ready to be weaponized. It was three for three, after all—it would be odd to assume it wouldn't be, by that point—as she gave another roar again, quaking the ground and lifting the flaming stones up again.[break][break]

Another Rock Slide, that time engulfed in flames, as the Drakloak briefly manifested into the physical plane again— that time directly above the Kingdra it sought out as it floated within the calm of its vortex. Free and untouched by the torrent above, it properly swung itself towards the beast with a touch of spectral energy.[break][break]
