Beau grins in response to Jack's quip as they enter the bar, adjusting his backpack as he barks a laugh. "Hey, sounds like a plan to me - after all that mess on the beach, I'd say we earned a little reward!" He pauses at a low table near the bar, unshouldering his backpack and sitting it in a chair. Behind him, Chaos the Snubbull huffs into view, sidling past Beau's chosen chair to sit plaintively on the floor by the next chair over, gazing up at his trainer with watery eyes.

Beau obliges by pulling out the chair, murmuring, "Here you go, little brah." Chaos scampers into the seat of the second chair with a wheeze, licking his lips as Beau rummages about in his backpack. He comes up with what appears to be a large, jury-rigged water bottle, all blue steel and plastered with an enormous and slightly faded sticker that reads "DEWFORD STRONG". Placing the bottle on the table before Chaos, it becomes evident that the mouthpiece has been altered significantly, angled down rather than up and fitted with a valve that dispenses water for the parched canine when he moves up to lap at the opening.

Satisfied that Chaos is settled, Beau joins Jack at the bar, abashed bewilderment written across his features. "Don't look at me, dude," he offers to Jack with a wry smile. "Usually my bros order, I don't know anything about anything if it doesn't come in a bottle with a cap to pop off." He is, after all, one classy guy.

"Dude, that sounds sick!" Beau enthuses as Jack explains his profession, delight written across his features. "I bet you've been to all kinds of cool places! What was your favorite? Or did you get to go anywhere that was, like, super scary?" He frowns, startled briefly by his own question, as though merely thinking of a 'super scary' locale is enough to bring his own mood down for the faintest of moments.

He beckons to Chaos, who has since been strutting up and down the beach as though he singlehandedly drove away the entire upset flock of Pidove with no external help whatsoever. The Snubbull snorts and snuffles as he negotiates across the sand with an uneven scamper, at length coming laboriously to rest in a sitting position next to Beau's feet with a wheezing cough.

"Yeah, actually, I think we've earned it!" Beau grins at the other man's suggestion, nodding. "My gym's actually in Slateport, but I don't hit the bar too often, so I'm about as up on the local hotspots as you are," he confesses, rubbing the back of his head in an embarrassed fashion. "My day job gym, I mean, not my Pokemon Gym. It's two different - uh, kind of confusing, y'know?"

In an attempt to break himself from this particularly recursive set of thoughts, he claps Jack easily on the back, steering him away from the waterside. "What are we waiting for?"

Resolutely determined to not dig himself a hole any deeper than he's already managed, Beau allows himself to be tugged in the proper direction, following Klaus with his hands in his pockets and beckoning Torben to follow with a surreptitious jerk of his head. "Look," he offers after a too-long stretch of silence, "You really gotta be careful down here by yourself. I know," he continues before Klaus can engage, lifting his hands defensively, "It's not my business, but if it hadn't been me you ran into it coulda been a gang or worse, brah," he mutters.

As they round the corner, Beau's features flash violet as the Litwick dispatches the Cursola with methodical swiftness, and he sighs. "And I'm sorry for stickin' my hands in your pockets, that was uncalled for." He nods, having thoroughly cleared the air to his satisfaction. A brief pause, as he continues to ruminate, and a Barraskewda swims into view, prompting him to point at the aquatic pokemon. Torben sends it belly-up with a Night Slash, and he tosses a pokeball easily, snapping his fingers as he recognizes an enormously valid point to the conversation. "Even if you're the one that told me to do it, really. Sorry." There. All better.

Beau winces as he comes to his feet, shooting Dominic a grateful look as the Rillaboom clamps a hand over the wound with a grumble. As Gigi approaches, the larger pokémon surveys her for a brief moment before uncovering the bite and presenting his forearm for treatment, allowing her to apply the ointment without protest, nodding slowly in assent.

A brief scuffle draws Beau's attention as a Scraggy leaps from the underbrush on the side of the path, barreling toward Dominic and Gigi with a shrill cry. "Whoa, brah, rude! Ever hear of doctor-patient confidentiality?" He skids into the Scraggy's path, unclipping a pokeball and tossing it toward the charging pokemon just in time, capturing it in a flare of crimson light. "Uh, thanks," he offers to Gigi over his shoulder, rubbing the back of his head, embarrassed. "Think I'd be used to things not liking me as much as I like them," he murmurs. Somewhere, klaus anchoret sneezes again.

Even Beau, from his position at the end of the course, finds himself ruffled by the sudden TAILWIND that Urania kicks up, the sand underfoot shifting ever so slightly as he watches Mars brace himself from upwind. When the other man takes off, stepping from roller to roller with fleet feet and measured balance, Beau can't help but laugh.

Not from the way it looks, no - Mars is perhaps a little windblown, but no less composed for it. The exuberance that Beau can't seem to quite keep contained despite his best efforts - impartiality possibly being one of his largest failings as a rookie Gym Leader - stems from the fact that, quite simply, Mars -has, in fact, got this-. The rollers shift and sway underfoot only for the briefest of instants before he's on to the next one, and he's somehow managing to stay squarely in the center of the course, so overbalancing appears to be nowhere on the docket.

In just a moment, he'll have his first winner, and he most definitely will not complain about that.

Beau must concede that things are not looking the best for his dynamic duo. Nemo, still charred from Howitzer's initial assault, takes a moment to gather himself from his exertion, assessing the soaked Arcanine that clambers back over the rocky edge of the arena with a scowl. He braces himself for an attack - that never comes.

Beau lets out a rallying cry toward the Swampert, pumping his fist in the air. "You made an opening, brah! Follow it up with a rock slide while she's getting her feet!" Nemo responds with a bellowing roar, his gaze not wavering from the Arcanine as he lunges forward once more, the juddering vibrations of his attack sending massive chunks of stone surging upward into the air from around the arena toward Howitzer and Rover both.

Torben, on the other hand, struggles to clamber to his feet, battered by Nemo's Earthquake only moments ago. Swaying unsteadily, the Pangoro only has a moment to recover his bearings before the dancing petals of Rover's attack slice into him, sending him stumbling backward as numerous wounds rip open along his body. "Torben!" Beau calls, alarmed. The Pangoro snarls, pushing forward through the attack even as more cuts make themselves evident through his fur, now sticky and dark as trails of purple-laced foam bubble from the corners of his muzzle. With no provocation from his trainer, the ursine pokemon leaps toward Rover once more, fist raised to deliver a wildly-thrown HAMMER ARM.

Beau can't help but to wince as the Wishiwashi's BRINE clips Lars on his final leg of the bridge, causing the entire assemblage to swing back and forth unsteadily, but the Gym Leader lets out a whoop as the other man manages to find firm ground on the platform at the other end at last.

The platform allows for Lars to catch his breath, but the final obstacle stretches out just beyond: a series of small platforms, barely big enough for Lars to stand on himself, are clustered together, raised from the water's surface on individual poles as they form a meandering walkway to the centre of the arena, where Beau stands beside a low pedestal. "Alright, almost there!" Beau calls, offering a jaunty wave. "Ro might be a little heavy for the platforms, but you'll need to make it across to grab the badge! Just be careful - some of those aren't as sturdy as they look, so try not to fall!"

Beau grins as he watches the feisty Riolu try to best the wall first, only to come sliding back down. That's definitely the sort of spirit he appreciates, though, and it seems it's just as infectious for Gwyar as he takes a run at the wall next. It's a challenge, and the strain is evident in trying to progress up the wall, but although the sheer force of effort will doubtless take its toll on his challenger, Beau knows he's going to make it past this obstacle just as he did the first.

The Dewpider spies Gwyar's ascent and jumps comically upward in alarm, a fresh wash of crystal-clear water cresting down the wall in a heavy sheet as though to slow his progress. The aquatic bug scrambles frantically back and forth along the top of the wall but seems unable to keep the water flowing across its entire surface in its panic, creating a number of dry spots as it moves back and forth erratically.

Beau shakes his head ruefully as the other man and his pokémon set to work holding the other beachgoers responsible for their own trash. When Jack leans down to help the wayward picnicker up, Beau's brow furrows slightly. "Do people listen to him more if he sounds more foreign?" he murmurs under his breath to himself, stabbing his stick into the ground and coming up with a chip wrapper that quickly lands in his bucket. "Maybe I should try that, and that one kid wouldn't give me such a hard time," he grumbles. Somewhere, klaus anchoret sneezes.

When Jack's attention turns back his way, he breaks into another wide smile, giving an idle shrug as he recalls Kavita to her pokeball. "That's definitely the way to do it, otherwise we'd be here forever!" he quips. Curious now, he cants his head to one side, peering at the other man inquisitively. "Were you having lunch? I mean, -I- come here sometimes to help keep the place clean just 'cause it's too pretty not to, but it's not many that do the same. You a good Samaritan, brah?"

Although Beau isn't quite hard of hearing, the same message echoes in his own mind, causing him to blink in confusion. His eyes meet Georgette Bluebottle's for a brief instant, and he still manages to shake his head in a negative at her half-asked question, rubbing the back of his head in frustration. "What's that even supposed to mean?" he grouses, only to be interrupted by the distant explosion.

It's enough to make him stumble, and although sweat beads his brow he manages to stay standing upright in contrast to his companion. Reaching down, he helps Gigi to her feet, one arm curling protectively about her shoulders as he regards the increasingly chaotic melee near the Tree with some trepidation. "When I signed up to help people, I don't think anybody had this in mind, exactly," he murmurs. "We have to help, but what can we do from here?"

His brow furrows in consternation - and whether it's the darkness veiling the area, the pressure exerting itself upon him, or merely an unexpectedly cynical take against the face of such extreme resistance, the next question to quietly voice itself is, "What if there's nothing left to help when it's done?"

At Georgette Bluebottle's direction, Beau nods, quickly beginning to unload the heavy bottles of water and following the woman's direction to place them in the rudimentary first-aid station, diverting his focus from the Tree and its erstwhile companion. As he hefts the final bundle up, the Tree surges into activity, the PRESSURE suddenly exerting itself on the area causing him to flinch and tense, nearly dropping his burden.

The attacks, however, are more prominent. As he regards the black spikes of the Tree's roots assaulting those closest to it, he moves into action, hastily unloading the water and instead shooing those straggling observers away - though amid the screaming and frenzied hubbub of retreat from those without a true stake in the proceedings, it must be said that not much work is required on his part.

Left only with those League members stalwart enough to remain, he regards the Tree with a slowly dawning sense of horror as it corrupts nearly every phenomenon around it into darkness. Georgette's question startles him so badly he jerks in place, snapping his gaze to her abruptly. "I, uh - yeah, I'm alright," he mutters, though a silent nod of gratitude is sent her way as her Slowpoke's HEAL PULSE attempts to disperse the unsettling atmosphere around them.

He fixes his eyes on the spores drifting through the air, too far away at this point to be directly concerned for himself, but it doesn't stop his face turning downward in an affronted grimace as he witnesses their effects...all except on a lone Wishiwashi, who seems to shrug the particles off as easily as though they were sea silt. "I wonder..." he murmurs, unclipping a pokeball from his belt and releasing an ILLUMINA STUFFUL who growls audibly as he forms, suffused with faint light.

"There, there, little brah," Beau soothes, crouching to pet the Stufful's head even as his gaze remains fixed on the Tree and its defenses, "Light us up if that starts to get closer, yeah?"

Going to the beach is always a good time, but there's no way someone can be having more fun than Beau on the sand at any given point. Eschewing his usual attire in favor of nothing more than sunglasses and a pair of white board shorts printed with a flexing Machop, the man positively exudes an infectious enthusiasm for the shore and its spoils.

Although he never misses a chance to catch a wave, his Gyarados-themed surfboard is planted firmly upright in the sand nearby, his attention focused on the pink-hued Vaporeon currently gamboling in the shallows before him. "Think fast, Wade!" he whoops, lobbing a volleyball toward the aquatic pokemon. Wade responds with a happy growl, bounding upward to bat the ball toward Beau with a swat of his finned tail.

The ball, naturally, overshoots its target, Beau reaching out and failing to catch it on the return, fingers grasping at nothing but air as he lunges for the wayward projectile. It bounces harmlessly away to one side, but Beau himself lands with a thump on his side, skidding slightly through the sand before coming to stop directly at Klaus' feet.

"Oh, uh," he mutters, glancing up over his sunglasses at the other man. "Hey."

"Whoa, little brah, chill." Beau stands closer to the front of the assembly, having received the alert and gunned it to Sootopolis as fast as his pokémon would allow. His attention, however, is not on the Tree, nor the figure standing before it - beyond the occasional glance over his shoulder to ensure that not much is happening from that quarter - but instead on the assembled populace likewise gawping at the unsettling sight.

His statement was directed at a skinny boy, by the look of him scarcely qualified to be called a teenager. Beau's arm blocks his attempt to squeeze forward to get a better look at the Tree, and he claps the boy firmly on the shoulder, his usual carefree countenance pulled into a grim frown. "Go back home, find your parents. This ain't the place for you right now," he rumbles flatly, causing the younger male to blanch and disappear deeper into the crowd.

Beau sighs in relief, scrubbing one hand across his face and turning to regard the Tree and its attendant fully. He suppresses a shiver, able to survey the tableau for only a moment before he forcibly wrenches his attention elsewhere. A sense of wrongness hangs in the air, and he'd be lying if he said it didn't give him the creeps.

He perks up slightly at the sound of a familiar accent inquiring about finding the person in charge, and he's off - not nearly because he's anything remotely approaching authority in this situation, but because it's information he himself is curious to know - whether he can, in fact, be more useful in this situation than keeping stragglers from drawing too close to the scene.
