The trek across the bridge is relatively simple to begin with, the rickety, swaying structure decidedly more stable at each end where it anchors to a platform. As progression is made, however, the bridge gets more and more unstable, and it is this that Beau regards with a mix of amusement and concern, curious as to whether the man will be able to stay on without keeling into the water below.

The Swampert and Wishiwashi duo keep a more or less steady stream of water jets angled toward the bridge, though none seem to be designed to strike the bridge itself, leaving it relatively unbothered but for Lars' own movements. One of the Wishiwashi in the school squeaks, however, the sound echoed by its innumerable kin as the group focus tightly on Lars himself, firing a high-pressure jet of BRINE aimed directly for him!

Beau whistles lowly as he emerges on a small islet in the shallows below Mars' platform, withdrawing the Grit Badge from his pocket and placing it carefully on a low pedestal at the center of the sandy bank. "Nice job!" he calls up encouragingly.

The Dewpider, for his part, regards Mars blankly before uttering a parting retort that sounds not unlike an especially rude raspberry, leaping off the side of the wall and disappearing into the water with a "plip".

The final obstacle stretches out before Mars at the top of the wall: several rollers are staggered in a generally downward fashion, each resembling an especially long cylinder on a stainless-steel skewer. "This is the last one, brah!" Beau calls up encouragingly. "Just gotta make it down the rollers to get to me, and you're set! Just can't have your friend there pick you up and fly you down, y'know?"

He takes a few steps back, crossing his arms and regarding the other man with a cocksure grin. "If you want advice, mine is to go quick and try to step on the middle so you don't go slipping off." He nods, as though this information is the definitive key to victory, and cants his head slightly as he awaits Mars' response.

Obstacle: On a Roll!

This obstacle features several horizontal rollers that form a steady descent down to the final resting place of the Grit Badge. Neither Beau nor his pokemon will interfere, but as he stated, Mars must negotiate his way across the rollers without allowing Urania to simply fly him down over them. Do so without falling (reaching 0 stamina) and the obstacle will be cleared!

As Talia finishes her bridge crossing to the penultimate platform, Beau lets out a sharp whistle that echoes across the beach, causing Nemo to cease his attack, instead lumbering over to Ahab the Poliwrath who comes slowly to his feet, stiff from paralysis.

"Alright, great job, miss Talia!" Beau calls out, waving enthusiastically at his challenger. He has, by appearances, relocated to the final platform, standing directly across from the young woman next to a short pedestal holding the Grit Badge. A gap of perhaps twenty feet separates the two, and at the edge of Talia's current vantage point rests the final obstacle:

The surfboard is fixed firmly to a cylindrical mast that stretches below to a squared raft, nearly a platform in its own right, though the board sways and rocks gently from the natural motion of the water. Below, around the raft, a school of Wishiwashi churns eagerly, as though ready to propel it across the gap.

"This is the last one," Beau explains, pointing at the surfboard with a self-satisfied grin. "I thought since you hadn't tried surfing when we first met, now oughtta do the trick! My little dudes down there will get you across, no tricks, but that water ain't the steadiest. Just gotta hang on 'till you get over here, and the badge is yours!" He shoots her a thumbs-up, nodding encouragingly.

Obstacle: Surf's Up!

A curious mechanism has been constructed for Talia in her final obstacle in the form of a square raft bearing a single tall mast, which supports a brightly-colored surfboard at the same level as the platform she currently stands on. The badge is in sight - she must simply keep her balance on the board and not let the lapping shallows or the helpful - if exuberant - movement of Beau's Wishiwashi jostle her from her perch as she is conveyed to her final goal!

Beau can't help but chuckle to himself at the banter between the challenger and his Riolu. It's easy to stay in a good mood with some good-natured competitive sportsmanship happening! Gwyar, of course, makes it to the sandy islet in the middle of the bay shallows with perilously little trouble, bringing him squarely before the next obstacle - a steep wall that starts with an easy curve at the base, straightening to an almost vertical ascent near the top with almost no incline to speak of. The entire assemblage has a polished sheen, and it is apparent that there are no handholds or rough wooden planks to provide purchase underfoot.

At the top of the wall, the bulbous blue head of a Dewpider peeks over. The insectoid pokemon jumps comically in alarm with a squeak, immediately and frantically skittering back and forth across the top of the wall, bouncing about and drenching its surroundings in a constant WATER SPORT that sends a thin layer of crystal-clear water shimmering down the wall, ensuring that climbing to the top - the evident goal - will be a damp undertaking!

Obstacle: A Slippery Slope!

This obstacle features a sharply-inclined wall that must be climbed to progress. Making the process more difficult is Beau's Dewpider, who patrols the top of the wall with a ceaseless Water Sport that makes progressing up the wall a slick proposition indeed!

The Gym Leader regards Lars' ascent from his vantage point with a neutral expression, though the twitch at the corner of his mouth gives his amusement away. Though the handholds give the other man a run for his money, it's easy work for him to finish the climb and ascend to the top of the wall.

Beau glances skyward, noting that not one of his Pelipper are out of place, and he nods approvingly at the Metagross making a final lap around the arena. "Not bad, not bad!" he calls out, voice resonating across the beach with bombastic mirth. "Next one's a little more straightforward - just don't fall!"

What he means is quickly apparent upon reaching the top of the climbing wall - a narrow rope bridge stretches from the top of the wall to a small platform erected out in the middle of the water, swaying precariously with every errant breeze. In the waters below, a Swampert and a school of Wishiwashi circle, occasionally releasing jets of high-pressure water that clip the bridge planks, causing the whole array to judder and sway spectacularly. It will clearly take fleet feet and fleeter reflexes to make it across and stay dry!

OBSTACLE: BRIDGE WORK!

This obstacle features a rope bridge of wooden planks strung flat from one platform to the next. A rope runs along the center of the planks, while two are at waist level for Lars to hold and keep his balance. Take care, though! Beau's water pokémon are blasting geysers up from the shallows below - if one strikes, it's not liable to hurt very much, but it might be hard to stay on the bridge!

• 1 example of follow-up/collaboration with non-canons: Beau's still a very green Gym Leader and has been engaging in his first challenges over the past month and more. Adrian Malcolm stands alone as the only challenger to take up the traditional format, and their battle is liable to give Beau a new perspective on what it means to be strong. Beau's also met Georgette Bluebottle as a fellow Gym Leader and is working on making himself more visible to the League at large, as well as helping various folks with various random tasks throughout! Also, uh, making rocket 'connections' in his DW with klaus anchoret.
