At such range-- or lack thereof-- the close combat was devastating, striking Mord in all the right places with bone-crushing precision. The dragon screamed, stumbling and flopping as he hit his knees and keeled to the side.

Onyx was on top of his opponent in a heartbeat, though he could feel his blood rolling down the skin of his chest and abdomen. Any pretense at a fair fight had fled and he was just focused on squeezing the life out of her as he, himself struggled for consciousness. He bore down on her throat with all of his weight.

Then her knee came up and drove into the meat of his inner thigh, deadening the nerve and making him grit his teeth against the pain. She’d managed to slip her leg somewhat between him and prise up off a bit, and he wobbled, vision tunneling from blood loss.

The strange, smoke-laced crocodile moves more like a snake than a lumbering beast, slippery and sneaky and smooth. With a twist of its body, it avoids the most damaging of Ferrum’s attack, pink blades striking off of scales instead of sinking into soft flesh. One line of red wells up along the beast’s jaw, but it’s definitely not the cleaving Onyx was hoping for.

Ferrum stares down into the dark maw of the crocodilian as the flames sprouting from his nose lift and warp, spitting off fiery offshoots that whisk through the air with hissing and spitting of sparks. Psycho cut being a ranged attack instead of a melee attack gives the Gallade enough room to maneuver around it, dodging the purple-tinged fireballs as they whizz past him. Onyx is forced to dodge, too, the tail ends of his hair flying up as he ducks down, the smell of it burning filling their little arena.

From his duck-dodge, Ferrum launches forward, arm blades thrown out in a low to high sweep of sacred sword.

Onyx is many things, but decent is certainly not one of them.

Their last few outings-- not dates, not dates, because that’s scary-- had him on the back foot. The tragic picnic. The carnival. A day in baking sweets. All things he’s either never done before, or never done in that capacity.

This? The smell of damp concrete, cheap beer, fried food? The scream and roar of an unruly crowd? The rasp of tape on his hands?

This he knows as well as his own name.

Bring something for protection, his inviting text had said, and not the sexy kind. Please for the love of god. Dress down.

It’s been so long since he’s competed with someone in his corner (if Andres shows at all, of course). It’s sort of thrilling, this edge-walking like there’s a bottomless pit on either side of the line: one where he doesn’t appear, and Onyx has to slug through his disappointment, and one where he does, and everything becomes electric.

Amplexus bends down to pluck a flower and pauses as the golden crown-shaped blossom moves, revealing a Cacnea attempting to blend in with the scenery. The Gardevoir puts the cactus to sleep with hypnosis, and Onyx throws a Pokeball.

“Hope we didn’t ruin your painting too much.”

It isn’t that he doesn’t want to be here. Onyx loves fighting. It’s all he’s ever been good at: violence. But the fanfare, the noise, the show of it all… it’s that aspect that he’s pretty fucking over. He has been ever since andres buenaventura beat him in the Galar champion matches. He lost the taste for it then and never got it back. He’s realizing it now as he stands there and doesn’t feel anything.

The crocodilian that the idiot with the dumb name throws out rises onto its hind legs and lows a deep bass note, flames curling up around the sides of its mouth. Onyx responds in kind with his own Pokemon. The Gallade, like his trainer, has little time for fanfare and inspects his arm blades quietly.

Shred invites him to have the first move so Onyx tosses his head and Ferrum goes from standing idly to launching forward, pink psychic energy gathering around his blade as he strikes in a wide arc with psycho cut.

Onyx’s fingers clamped around her throat, wrist flexing to press his palm tighter, directly on top of her windpipe.

He didn’t expect the way she contracted her legs and struck out at him, and her blow hit him in the chest-- higher up than she probably expected. She was successful in knocking the wind from his lungs, and the seam of one of his chest wounds split, soaking the front of his shirt with blood.

He felt himself going down and so he tried to take her with him, dragging down on her neck and throwing all of his bodyweight into pulling her down by her throat, hopefully then to scramble on top of her and really choke her out.

Mordekaiser used the window of opportunity granted to him by his opponent’s healing to, once more, charge face first into the canid, using take down to attempt to bear him down to the ring floor and more easily savage him.

Cold.

“Amplexus,” Onyx calls, and the Gardevoir turns to see a Bisharp suddenly cleaving towards them. Amplexus throws out his hand and waves of hypnosis pour off of him, hitting the Bisharp and knocking it out. It’s trajectory carries it forward and it falls at the base of the easel, knocking the legs.

Onyx approaches to toss a Pokeball.
