Aloof as Tam may be, he’s not immune to pain, and the truth of the matter is that even if he’s not frustrated about what happened, he does feel pretty damn shitty. Being at HQ, however, makes it better somehow. There’s something reassuring about it, as if it's a safe place to be – a place that is cherished by him. And, just like being at HQ is reassuring, in its own way, so is Orion’s presence.

It’s the little things, like the faint smile Tam definitely does not miss.
[break][break]
It makes him feel better, even if ever so slightly.
[break][break]
”Hmm… Like zombies? Poor pokémon, damn.” He’s caught up in his thoughts, thinking back to the events of only an hour or so ago. He could have done so much better. In retrospect, there’s so many things he could have done differently. It was a life-or-death situation, and yet here is Tam, analysing it as if it were some tournament battle from when he was back at Unova. ”He didn’t do that, no, but I’m sure the mist made his pokémon faster… Maybe stronger? That last part can just be a Shadow thing, though. I’ll remember to mention it in my report.”

He really doesn’t look forward to writing that report. He sure as hell is too tired to do so at the moment.

Tired, and yet he still reaches for the first aid kit; taking a seat to begin to carefully patch up some of Lily’s injuries. The ones too deep for a LIFE DEW to heal immediately. She’ll likely have some scars after this. Guilt is not a feeling Tam is familiar with. Tonight, it pains him. Especially when Lily herself is being so gentle and patient with him.

”I think it was a decoy. We stopped enough of their shipments for them to take notice, I guess? But…” But the eggs had been broken, and he’s the one to blame for it. ”...We should be able to fight avatars, Orion. We should be trained for it. I’ll make sure I am next time.”

Yes, he absolutely intends to fight Cillian Quinn again. Even if tonight he had almost ended up dead.

He has always followed his desires. He has always pursued what he wants. Had he wanted Orion Lykos before this night? In a way, yes, the thought had crossed his mind and that much he won’t deny, but in many others, this isn’t even about Orion himself, but about a deep-seated desire to seek companionship – a deep-seated desire to not be alone even if just for one evening.

Perhaps they’re much more alike than what Tam will ever realise, because this wish of his is one to which he remains ignorant.
[break][break]
Right here, right now, there is Orion and only him, and even if just for one night, Tam will make him his. True to this wish, he looks into eyes of emerald green, a hand resting on the wall and pinning Orion between it and him. Softly, teeth bite down on leather, pulling off a glove in a practised motion and then reaching down to find what he seeks.

It’s not difficult to bring pleasure, it has never been, and despite his assertive nature, Tam is almost surprisingly gentle when he wants to be. Although mingling with the gentleness of kisses, there is bites too, signs of which will remain even come morning – as if the marks left upon his territory. A trail from neck to collarbone to chest, until Tam falls to his knees, this time looking up upon the green eyes that usually stare up at him.

”I want my rangers to be good at their jobs.” He admits with no hesitation, unfazed by the defiance of the cadet. Someone else may have been offended, told him off, but not Tam. That’s not what he cares for. Arashi can be as much of an asshole as he wants as long as he does his job well, but Arashi is not doing his job well.

”But, no one was a great ranger from their very first day, Arashi. Not even you. Cut the crap, work with your partners, and yeah, do your best.” Despite his questionable language, Tam is calm, his tone is levelled, and it’s all spoken in the most matter-of-fact way possible. As if it were what’s obvious. To him, it’s exactly that.

He stares at the cadet as if to make this point clear, and then, if only so slightly, a brow is raised.

”So?” Tam looks at Orion, not even baffled by his shock, as if he himself were just being objective about this clearly important matter. ”Being a terrorist doesn’t stop him from being good-looking, Orion. Also, I do have good taste.”

His gaze meets that of the cadet at that, looking into green eyes. There’s an implication there, plain as day, and if Tam doesn’t speak it out loud it’s not really for Orion’s sake. He just thinks that it’s obvious enough.

He has other concerns right now, anyway…

”It didn’t look different from a regular Escavalier, but I think it could use Shadow moves… May have also been an avatar ability, though. He had this annoying mist that I couldn’t defog.”

Fingers gently brush the rough scales of his Tyranitar, watching her – assessing damage. She’s doing much better than what she could have been. She could have gotten seriously hurt. Worse, even.

Tam pushes that thought away.

”My Ursaluna and Togekiss are in pretty rough shape, but I think they’ll recover… There was an egg shipment that got destroyed.”

His gaze wanders over to the incident board, and for a second, there’s something terribly sad about the look in Tam’s eyes. He doesn’t care about the fact that it’s the first incident he has to report since transferring to Hoenn, but he does care for all those eggs that were lost. Almost as if the pokémon were a bigger concern to him than his own safety.

Metal, cold against his skin, existing in heavy contrast with the soft leather of his gloves when he too begins to unbutton Orion’s shirt. Tam notices these things. He welcomes them. And, he does not bother with taking off his gloves – not yet. He’s too used to them for the thought to cross his mind at this moment.

Lips meet instead, as if the act itself were addicting. There’s the lingering taste of alcohol even now that they’re far from the bar, but this too isn’t something that bothers Tam. Taste it all. His tongue seeks Orion’s, greedy.

Smoothly, his own tie slides off to the floor once the knot is undone, and it’s then that gloved fingers move on to a belt. He doesn’t stop anymore. He never hesitates. Tam is ever too assertive in his ways.

He could have died. In fact, he had almost died. This is something of which Tam is all too aware, but he’s also aware of another undeniable fact: there’s nothing he can do about that. It had already happened, so what’s the point in feeling frustrated about it? In being afraid or angry? All he can do is move forward, keep going, and do better next time. It will be different next time.

The first aid kit is placed on the table, while opening it, he takes a look at the file. There he is. Cillian Quinn. Or, rather, according to what this file says, Patrick Cavalli.

”Yep. That’s him. He’s hotter in person, though.” Leave it to Tam to bluntly and nonchalantly make an observation like this about a man who had just tried to kill him. A man who would have killed him had the police not been called to the scene.

Calmly, he begins to take his gloves off, a mental note being made to get a new pair. They had protected his hands from getting injured by the dark crystals, but they’re pretty much ruined now. His shirt is also ruined, covered in blood. So is the jacket he had brought with him back from the hospital and left in his office when stopping there.
[break][break]
”Aerodactyl, Tyranitar, Roserade, and Lugia. All shadow, I’m pretty sure. An Escavalier too… Tyranitar is the reason I got hurt.”
[break][break]
Passingly, he thinks back to the battle, images flashing in his mind. He pushes them away, reaching for the Friend Ball that belongs to his own Tyranitar.

Lily towers over them, but for a Tyranitar, she’s exceptionally calm, and it’s with a low rumbling sound that she looks at Tam, leaning closer to gently bump her head against his chest.

”...I know.”
[break][break]
Scratches caused by the usual SANDSTORM mark many of her scales, and here and there, there are injuries from where the crystals broke through her armour. Tam may be indifferent to most things, but even though he doesn't say it, this pains him.

He had not expected pleading, but it’s also not an unwelcome sound. It earns Orion a passing smirk on Tam’s part, and also a soft bite from eager teeth before the simplest of answers is spoken:

He could pull away from the corridor’s wall there and then, but he doesn’t. Instead, he pushes Orion closer to it, a hand reaching under his shirt. Ranger uniform. Tam only wears his own when working out of the city, but he’s all too familiar with every piece, and it sure makes removing them much easier.

The bedroom’s door is right there, mere steps away. Tam knows this, but he does not wait.

Orion’s disbelief falls on deaf ears. So does whatever annoyance he might feel. Tam does pay attention to his words, however. Or, well, as much attention as he can pay while grabbing the first aid kit.

Left hand, this time. He remembers. He’d rather not move his right much right now.

”Oh… Probably Lugia then. I think she showed up at the end?” He thinks because it could have just as easily been an illusion or something of the like. Tam is distrusting when Team Rocket is concerned. He won’t believe anything until he sees guaranteed proof of it.

He should probably be angry. He should probably feel frustrated when remembering the battle and even full of dread. Afraid. None of these feelings are there, however, and he’s as impassive as ever when walking back towards the door.

Is he making fun of Orion? Is he teasing him? It’s always hard to tell with how matter-of-fact Tam is about everything, but this time, he’s as honest as can be. These are his standards. ”Be better” his father’s words ring in his mind once more, but just as before, they’re not voice.

He walks quietly into the breakroom, and when Hailee approaches him asking about the pizza party that had just been cancelled, Tam wonders if he should tell her. Why, though? She's about to see it for herself. He doesn’t even consider that the news might upset her.

He lets her talk, he lets Orion apologise, and when Hailee asks if this is a joke after the nine is removed from the board, he says nothing at all.
[break][break]
There’s no need to clarify the obvious.
[break][break]
But, apparently there is, because within seconds, the situation takes a turn for the worst. A broom is thrown, aimed directly at an already injured Orion, and although Tam knows there’s no stopping the projectile, he is actually fast enough to stop Hailee herself on her tracks. He grabs her by the back of her shirt, pulling her back before she can reach her target. Naturally, he’s incredibly calm through it all.

”Hailee. Stop.”

It probably won’t be enough to stop her, but Tam gives her the chance to before he has to make things worse.

Tam is, above all else, a man who is true to his thoughts and impulses. Most situations don’t compel him to do much, but there are times like this one when even though he has a clear goal in mind, new ideas spark and take hold of him with ferocity.

When looking into Orion’s eyes, there is the desire to kiss him, and it’s all too easily that Tam gives in; pausing in the middle of the narrow corridor for their lips to meet just as they had done back at the bar. Much like back then, there is no hesitation on his part.
[break][break]
And yet, when he moves on to kiss Orion’s jawline and then his neck, he finds himself pausing once again, and it’s there, while still so close that his lips brush against exposed skin with every syllable spoken, that he asks a simple question:

”Are you sure?”
[break][break]
Even Tam can realise that Orion’s day has been difficult and even he wouldn’t push without being sure that this is what they both want.

He hears Orion just as he manages to get the door open, and when he does, Tam comes to the realisation that he’s probably going to make a big deal out of this. This realisation makes him sigh and he regrets it when his chest aches as a result. Stupid crystals. Stupid earthquake.

Yep, there it is. Tam may suck at understanding people, but at least he remembers how people tend to react to some of the things he does. Like getting hurt, for example.

”I’m fine.” He says all too calmly, even though he does not look fine at all. Turning on the lights, Tam steps into his office, only to then approach the cabinet where he keeps a first aid kit. He doesn’t need it for himself and his pokémon had been given basic healing, but he’d still rather check on them just in case.

”Can you get me our files on known Rocket members? Pretty sure I may have ran into one of their avatars.”

He probably could have said that with a little more tact, but alas, tact is something which Tam lacks.

The home belonging to Slateport’s Ranger Captain happens to be at walking distance from the ranger headquarters; a small, near oceanfront house just like many others in Hoenn’s largest city. There’s a yard of perfectly verdant grass, yet devoid of plants except for the two large trees from which a hammock hangs. There’s steps that lead to the entryway, and a black doormat that bears no welcoming message.

”Hm… Ignore the mess, I guess.” Tam says when unlocking the door to lead Orion in, yet despite his words, for the most part, his place is neat. The furniture is as simple as the outside of his home would make one expect, and although it looks comfortable, there’s no real sense of decor to it all. Tam doesn’t care for aesthetics, he’s just concerned with practicality and comfort.

But, he also doesn’t care much for what Orion Lykos actually thinks of his home, and it’s taking his hand that he leads him further in, looking back to meet emerald eyes he had looked into one too many times for one afternoon. There, despite the way the effects of alcohol begin to fade, he smiles faintly.

”Come.”

On the couch, a small white Zorua slumbers, making for the worst guardian in existence.

Orion Lykos had been wrong about one thing: if either of them is cute, it’s definitely him.

The thought, fleeting as it is in Tam’s mind, is born of alcohol’s haze, and it’s by it that it is also carried away.

There’s the sight of flushed cheeks, the sound of laugh, and following it close, pleasing words and lips that meet his in the most gentle way possible. Reciprocating comes naturally, but gentleness has never suited Tam, and in the mingling tastes of liquors, there is something ardent. It lasts seconds still, and with a gentle bite of a lip, he pulls away just enough for blue eyes to look into green ones once again.

He asks for the bill without looking away.
