In theory, considering that his youngest sister is around these kids’ age, Tam should have no problem dealing with them, but that theory gets thrown out the window when taking into account the little known fact that Tam hasn’t been to Unova in almost four years. When he left, his sister was a kid, and he’d much rather deal with kids than teens.

Alas, he doesn’t have a choice in the matter.

His superiors had said to come to the Rustboro Trainer School and teach the students about being a ranger, and although Tam would much rather do just about anything else, complaining and resisting would have been a hassle.

So, he’s here, and since he has to be here, so does @jericho, because back-up is always important during ranger missions, no? He needs someone to answer all the inevitable questions the students will ask them.

There are some great disadvantages to having a personality like Tam’s. They don’t become apparent to him often, but nevertheless, they sure are there. For example, the fact that he doesn’t care about most things means that he often can’t be bothered with what he things of as ”annoying” tasks, and when said annoying tasks are things like putting on sunscreen in the morning before a day spent at the beach and constantly getting wet, that sure can result in problems.

In this case, the inevitable fact that Tam will come out of this with a sunburn.
[break][break]
He can feel the sheer warmth of the sun rays on his ever so pasty skin, but just as Tam seems to be great at doing, he completely ignores it. He’s too busy dividing his attention between his hot dog and the conversation anyway, which somehow has turned into Marshall suggesting they go snowboarding.
[break][break]
”Oh… Yeah, I’d like that.” He finds himself admitting, but he also refrains from saying that Hoenn doesn’t get much snow and that they may still not be able to leave the region by the time winter comes. It’s a bleak thought, and even Tam has enough sense not to ruin a conversation with things like those… Well, at least sometimes.

He also has enough sense not to ask more about Marshall’s mother, but he does note on it, looking at his friend while the redhead busies himself with seasoning their fries.

”I’m sorry to hear that, Marshall… Yeah, things get busy. I haven’t even been back to Unova since I moved here.” Almost four years. That hadn’t been just because he’s busy, though. He doesn’t elaborate, nor does he explain, he just turns his attention to the fries, taking a couple right off the bat.

He chews, he thinks, his expression reveals nothing, and finally…

”...That’s pretty good.”

There, right there, an ever so slight smile tugs at his lips.

Perhaps it was because he wasn’t in the habit of being intimidated, perhaps it was a complete and absolute lack of self-preservation, but the fact of the matter was that while the immense pressure was indeed there, Tam only had two reasons to want to get out of Shoal Cave as soon as possible:

The first was that the cartographer clearly needed medical attention.

The second was that all this cold was really starting to become an inconvenience.
[break][break]
So, when Laurence Anderson addressed him, he did no more than shrug. Or, well, as close to a shrug as he could manage when having an arm around their injured mapmaker to hold him up.

”Yeah, it’s kind of overwhelming at first, but it is what it is.” No shock or fear at all. Maybe Tam really did lack natural self-preservation instincts.

He did look up at Articuno one more time, watching the majestic avian legendary for a short moment before returning his attention to Lars.

”We should probably get out of here, I think he’s injured.”

Or maybe too cold or too shocked. Regardless, as Tam saw it, leaving Shoal Cave soon would have been preferable. It was too damn cold.

Pokémon, though? He sure does always expect things from them, and when the Happiny clings to his leg, he does no more than try to shake her off so she’ll get to work.

Clover looks up and barks, whining for about 0.5 seconds and then returning her attention to Georgette as if nothing had just happened. Thanks, you’re a real one. ”Happiny, do your thing.”

Now, Happiny’s thing would be CHARMING the Archeops into complacency. A quick and harmless trick that might just allow Tam to move the nest without getting mauled by a rainbow bird.

His main concern is the fact that he’d rather not get stuck among a bunch of people, but being that he’s in a crowded concern, isn’t that already happening anyway?

Tam looks at Marshall, blinking in confusion, and just as he opens his mouth to correct his friend on his mistaken assumption about the fact that he had chosen to be here, Xiura Balfaltin appears. Leave it to Marshall to have a whole lot of friends. Ugh, extroverts. This is not someone he himself has met before, is it? Thankfully, Xiura is quick to confirm it for him.

”Hey. I’m Tam.” His response comes in the most neutral tone possible, and his expression matches that. He doesn’t even smile when Noah Camus appears, but to Noah that probably would be no surprise. That’s just how Tam is, after all. How he has always been. Wait… If someone he knows also joined them, does that make him an extrovert now?! Ugh. Hopefully not, that sounds exhausting as fuck. It's at this point that he decides to lightly stomp out what little is left of his cigarette, maybe for Noah's sake.

He doesn’t comment on the “one of his rangers” part, because truth be told, Tam doesn’t even remember if he ever told Marshall he’s ranger captain. It doesn’t even cross his mind, in fact, instead finding himself more preoccupied with thinking of the fact that Marshall and Noah meeting will probably be like… two energetic dogs meeting at the dog park and sniffing each other’s butts.

He has never been particularly talkative, so maybe it really is a good thing that Marshall talks enough for the two of them, no? And, who would have thought that they actually have something like that? Snowboarding, the great uniter. ”Hell, who knows, maybe we ran into each other back then.”

Unlikely, but it’s a possibility that crosses Tam’s mind as they walk, and although he’s in no particular rush to keep up with Marshall, he manages to do so with relative ease while eating his hot dog.

All around them, people enjoy the festival, making for the kind of scene he has never cared much for. Yet, with the summer sun shining down on them and the gentle breeze of Slateport bay, he has to admit that it does kind of make for a nice atmosphere. The beach is nice.
