Maybe the Mantine are the problem. How else to explain the whole of Slateport beach collectively sucking at surfing? One could argue that it's not fitting of a ranger to blame pokémon for things, but Tam has never cared for what is and isn't fitting.

He had come here to help with herding some Mareep, so eventually, after some conversation and a drink, that’s exactly what he sets out to do. With Clover by his side, Tam walks out of the farm and in the direction the Mareep had headed, but instead of finding them scattered and grazing all over Route 102, he finds that they have already been gathered by a pair of Yamper.

Naturally, Clover barks a greeting, happily approaching the other two Puppy Pokémon.

Meanwhile, Tam’s attention is drawn towards the one who is apparently responsible for having herded the Mareep, and lo and behold, he actually recognizes her.

”Oh… Mossdeep’s Gym Leader.” He doesn’t remember her name, sure, but it’s better than nothing! Tam has never been all that great with names. ”Did you herd the Mareep? They escaped from the nearby ranch.”

Well.. At least that’s less work for him, even if Clover had been looking forward to doing some herding.

They make quite the pair, don’t they? Between Marshall having enough energy for both of them plus some and his ability to do things without even waiting for Tam’s opinion on them, he makes it terribly easy for the ranger to just go along with all of it. It would be too much of a hassle not to. As would be having to decide on his own.

He has never had salt-and-vinegar fries, but salt-and-vinegar chips are pretty good, so these are probably good too, and who doesn’t love ice cream? It all sounds great to him, except for the fact that, well…

”I never went to the beach much in Unova.” Other than for summer days spent at Undella Town when he was a child, that is. Some nice tidbits of information about Tam’s life here. Riveting, clearly. ”I’m from Icirrus, it’s not much of a vacation spot.”

Other than for skiing, that is. Tam is actually pretty damn good at snowboarding.

But, of course, he doesn’t say any more than what’s absolutely necessary, and when ordering his own hotdog, he decides to go for one with sauerkraut and mustard.

Okay, so, his superiors hadn’t had the foresight to assign this task to someone who’s a little more familiar with the scene than him. That’s fine. It’s not like that’s unexpected or anything. They can still work with what they have and get the job done… Right? Truth be told, Tam isn’t too worried.

”Nope, racing’s not my thing.” Is the answer he gives , but apparently, according to Marshall, he’s supposed to at least pretend like it is. To no one’s surprise, acting also isn’t Tam’s thing, and yet…

”No idea what you mean, I’m having a great time.” He says to @marshall in the most neutral and monotone voice humanly possible, leaving it up for debate if he’s being honest or just extremely sarcastic. ”Sure, though, let’s do that.”

Even though he doesn’t say it, he’s rather impressed by Marshall’s observation skills, even if he may wonder if that’s because Marshall is going about this as if he were in some kind of spy movie. Whatever works for him, right? To Tam it’s just a job like any other. Being a ranger in Slateport can be weird like this.

So, turning his attention to the crowd, he finds the man with the tablet in no time, and all he does is gesture for him to approach the car.

In Tam’s defence, the whole ‘aloof and unbothered’ shtick he has going on tends to do wonders with making people assume that he knows exactly what he’s doing. Maybe it will this time too.

Tam had never been much for hot food on hot days, much less for spicy hot food in the middle of a damn heat wave. But, admittedly, when stepped out of the kitchen with a freshly-made plate of curry, the scent of it was… enticing. Not like anything about his expression changed, of course, but he thought it all the same.

”You cook?” Noah didn’t seem like the type, but then again, even Tam himself cooked when at home and most people would have never thought him to be the type.

That’s not what mattered here.

What mattered was that the Snorlax did react. That it sniffed the air, opened its mouth, and then while its eyes were still closed, burped as if it were making space for more food in its seemingly bottomless stomach.

Too little, too late. The Snorlax bit the plate, flipping it and somehow managing not to spill a lot of the content out of its mouth. The curry still got all over its face, but much of it was consumed in one single gulp.
