annalise knows right away that matias is talking about himself — she can't imagine him complimenting another man like that for a war he fought in — but it's the hero of kanto moniker that seals it for her. hadn't he insisted on calling himself hoenn's hero to her before?[break][break]melody puts out two good candidates, drawing a laugh out of annalise that's swallowed up by the distance between them. [break][break]"i'm the first ranger in my family." her reasoning for becoming a ranger are far less interesting than airi's. "i joined because i wanted to help pokemon. nothing too special."[break][break]her colleague's raised hand draws her attention. she follows her pointing toward the rooftop, squinting up at the vague swablu shapes buried in the soot. [break][break]"oh, yeah, you're right." annalise reaches for a pokeball from her belt, releasing her meowstic. she turns to look at airi. "hold out your hands."[break][break]her meowstic's psychic plucks the swablu from the rooftop. the first, tinged pink by the pokemon's power, is lowered down into airi's hands. annalise reaches out to accept the second one. their white feathers are dirtied by soot — something swablu and altaria typically can't stand — and their behavior seems unusually subdued for a wild pokemon.[break][break]"what do you think?" annalise asks her colleague, still studying the swablu in her hands closely. "sick or injured?"

he's pincered between her and her ceruledge, forced into action. a flash of light precedes the appearance of his gyarados, towering above them all with a roar. her ceruledge raises its head, metal clinking against metal as its helmet shifts with the movement. [break][break]annalise doesn't hear the command muttered to his gyarados, only the resounding shattering of glass as the home adrian so desperately wants to return to becomes collateral in their battle. she grits her teeth sympathetically as her ceruledge is struck, but the knight breaks its fall by disappearing into a puddle of shadowy phantom force.[break][break]as the brutal swing loses its furious momentum, the ghost-type reappears to keep up the tempo, slashing toward the sea serpent with its bladed arms.

she kicks, but her foot passes through his shin without resistance. no bone, no muscle, no flesh — just shadows worming in the hole left in her wake. the sight of it makes her brain short-circuit for a moment. he hit me, her racing thoughts insist, as if logic can combat reality. why can't i hit him? [break][break]his question cuts through her panic. she raises her eyes, teeth gritted, and yields no answer besides a hateful look. her altaria cries out, pincushioned by a volley of poison stings. weakened by the toxins, her altaria begins to lose altitude with each wingbeat. [break][break]you are alone.[break][break]her mind curls despairingly around the statement. another dragon pulse lights up the battlefield and the air behind walsh shimmers unnaturally.[break][break]remember?[break][break]mew materializes as it passes behind the rocket boss, long enough for their eyes to meet, long enough to manifest as more than just a trick of the light, then shrouds itself once more. [break][break]"i'm not alone." and as she argues, the rocky ground beneath her bites into her palms as she shifts her weight onto her arms. the league is with her. illeana reyes is with her. mew is proof she hasn't been abandoned to fight alone against a phantom. "not really."[break][break]an aura sphere gathers over her head, its shape distorted in the downpour. it shifts, manipulated by mew twisting in the air, then fires toward walsh. under the cover of the attack, annalise tries to scramble to her feet.

in the death throes of peace, annalise finds herself in the booth of a pizza parlor, waiting for her date to come back from the bathroom. the lighting is dingy, the well-worn menu is slightly sticky — hallmarks of a restaurant that'll deliver on the quality of their pizza.[break][break]annalise leans her cheek into her palm, arm propped up on the table, and idly studies her options. every few toppings, her mind wanders unchecked. to the upcoming war. to the losing battles she's been fighting in the people around her. it motivates her to be here, to try and mitigate more damage while she still can.[break][break]movement in her peripheral catches her attention. she lifts her eyes, regarding him. and, for the first time in a long, divisive stretch, she looks pleased to see him. [break][break]"welcome back."

"oh, no, you didn't startle me. it's fine."[break][break] annalise is quick to brush off the apology, feeling a twinge of guilt for getting caught off guard like she'd been. the other ranger maintains the formality of her captain title and she notices but doesn't verbalize any disagreement to it. she deserves it for jumping out of her skin, if anything.[break][break]"i appreciate you joining me for this, airi."[break][break]she has, at least at a glance, all the qualities annalise looks for in a ranger — enthusiastic, willing, respectful. and it doesn't hurt that she has medical expertise, either.[break][break]"they said the swablu are nesting at the gym." she motions toward the building in front of them with a wave of her hand. "maybe somewhere around back? let's check."[break][break]she gestures for her to follow. the soot-covered ground muffle her footsteps as she slinks toward the side of the building.[break][break]"how long have you been a ranger for?" her head turns, taking a cursory look at the other ranger to make sure she's still with her. overhead, on the roof, the soot pile sifts and a glimpse of blue pokes out enough to be discerned against the gray.

[break][break]"where are you going, adrian?"[break][break]she rips a pokeball from her belt and releases her ceruledge. the asphalt ahead of him bubbles with shadow, then the ghost-type lurches out of it, blocking the way forward. she blocks his other way out of this, uncoiling around her injury so she can straighten up and face him properly. "do you want me to call you a god?"[break][break]in certain lights, she looks at him and thinks he is one. [break][break]but then he moves and disturbs the illusion, trembling against a balcony railing, and the dissonance ripples through the image of him that she's built up in her head. annalise has no fond memories of fallarbor town now. she stares at Greyson Connors's old gym through a veil of falling soot, watching it gather on the eaves like midsummer snow. she remembers making excuses to visit him here, envisions herself begging him to make a video advertisement for her gym with her. [break][break]her eyes move like she can see their ghosts acting it out on the gym's front lawn, but then she blinks and looks down, scuffing the toe of her shoe against untrampled ash. [break][break]she can't quite recall Felix Gallagher dragging her blindfolded to the rocket bunker somewhere beneath this town, perhaps for the best. nor can she remember much of her rescue. she just remembers reuniting with greyson, then pain, then waking up sometime later in a hospital down the road. [break][break]she's so deep in the mire of the past that she doesn't realize airi has arrived. she's thrust into the present with a jolt of surprise, then the slightest flush of embarrassment as she recovers. [break][break]"sorry, hi." it's an apology and greeting folded into one. she straightens, soot shifting off her coat. her gaze flickers downward, then back up at his face. she's not just some former fan trying to glean his identity; she's a ranger taking stock of the pokeballs clipped to his belt in a cursory glance that could've been mistaken as her doing a once-over of his outfit. " [break][break]and in her feigned disappointment, she shoots her hand out to reach for his wrist, to wrench his hand away from his belt with surprising strength. even if he evades her grasp, she throws a punch with her other hand, backed by the shifting of her weight. [break][break]it asks, in its white-knuckled way, if he thinks she's stupid. it asks if he's stupid, showing his face here.
