annalise has already lost — too much of herself, fighting in a war that she cannot desert. an eternity ago, she had been a ranger whose deepest concern had been the rehabilitation of wild pokemon, but now she fights against gods and monsters for a league that had nearly cut her lose. but there's no other recourse than to keep giving more of herself away to defend her region, her universe, her life.[break][break]walsh doesn't even allow her the pyrrhic satisfaction of letting her watch the dragon pulse crush him. his nidoking moves in tandem, raising a muddy earth power to swallow the attack. [break][break]she reaches for her earpiece — why isn't illeana reyes saying anything back? — as her altaria lifts itself into the air and the earth power crumbles to reveal the empty space where walsh had once stood. [break][break]"he's — "[break][break]smoke plumes in her peripheral and walsh materializes, delivering a solid kick that turns her report into a cut-off yelp. she tries to plant her feet and recover her balance, but her training with paxton concordas gives her no foothold against slick ground and a forceful kick. [break][break]the bluff rises to meet her, stealing the air out of her lungs as she lands on her side. she rolls onto her back, desperate-eyed, and lashes her foot out at him. "okay," she concedes quietly, fingers curling over the red orb shard as the pact is made. her hand is drawn back to her side, abandoning the suggestion that had existed beneath her careful questions. her head tilts, drinking in his explanation. [break][break]"i'm already our assurance," she teases, teeth flashing in a smile. in the past couple of months, she likes to think she's kept him pretty grounded all on her own, without any need for transfer of power. [break][break]"but sure, yeah, i'll think of it like that."[break][break]matias has put a lot of effort into this — and, selfishly, she feels relieved to know he can't abandon her so long as she has it in her possession — so she accepts the shard as their anchor.[break][break] (how cute, she thinks)[break][break]less cute, however, is his half-baked hypothesis that groudon won't try to kill her as long as she has the shard. her brows knit and she turns her head to look at groudon, slow as to not invite its attention. melody sings and the kingdom grinds to a halt to listen to her concert. meloetta floats past her, draping comfortingly over the top champion as the solo becomes a duet. annalise listens, enraptured, until the song comes to its conclusion. [break][break]a little gasp rises in her throat once melody reopens her eyes, glittering with glossy starlight. transformed by her music, just as the the kingdom had been.
