[break][break]annalise swallows a scoff. how typical for rocket vermin to scatter from the light. her ceruledge's bitter blade clashes against his gyarados' tail, drawing no vitality from its shielded scales. the ghost-type fights to pierce its protect to no avail until the water-type shoves it backwards. it lands hard on its feet, flames flickering with frustration, but annalise's voice stops it from any immediate redress. [break][break]"follow them."[break][break]the gyarados flees down the street after its trainer. [break][break]"chase them, kill them, whatever. just make sure they're gone."[break][break]either way, it serves as a reminder to rocket that they're not welcome anywhere in hoenn. not in the comfort of their cities. not in the underbelly of their region. her ceruledge nods ever so slightly, then moves through the shadows after them.

[break][break]and then the universe shifts its moving parts into place to ensure her survival. the sky is sundered open, harsh sunlight spilling through the cracks. she feels it seep through her rain-soaked sygna suit and pool against damp, cold skin and she knows, in that fleeting moment before his charizard rises to meet her, that she's safe now.[break][break]the psychic tether slips and matias catches her.[break][break]"you're here," she breathes, finding her voice once her mind catches up. his apology echoes a different time, a different place, a different boyfriend*. the self-same answer she had given Greyson Connors from her cot rises in her throat, but then she sees the blood on his face and whatever she had meant to say flees her.[break][break]" — what happened?"[break][break]her hand lifts, perhaps to wipe the blood from beneath his split lip, but then his charizard lands on scorched earth and tenderness gives way to circumstance. she dismounts, reuniting with an unhurried mew and her weakened altaria. [break][break]"head ranger was so much paperwork and meetings. i was used to doing mostly fieldwork, so it was kind of like culture shock to me. i also got the job a couple of months before meteno nearly crashed into hoenn, so..."[break][break]so her experience is colored by the looming shadow of death.[break][break]"but meteor aside, it wasn't that bad. i think captain is a good balance between responsibility and ranger work, though; i only have to manage rangers registered to mauville, rather than the whole region."[break][break]the conversation lapses as they examine the swablu. annalise watches airi kneel and put the swablu on bare grass to get a better look at it. as she starts to outline the bird's symptoms, annalise inspects the one in her hands more closely. in the quiet, she hears it — the wheeze airi describes.
