annalise has never been to mechanical kingdom, but she's been through enough rifts to dull her apprehension about them. her only concern is how she's going to find melody once she's passed through into unfamiliar territory but, hopefully, she'll stay nearby the rift for an easier meetup. [break][break]she steps through the rift, immediately awed by the industrialized world that unfurls in front of her. compared to the desolation ultra plant and ultra desert, this world almost feels like a real civilization — though she doesn't think she wants to run into anyone who lives here. [break][break]her eyes lower, sweeping the surrounding area. a shock of pink sparks recognition in her expression. the tension in her posture eases as she approaches the idol. [break][break]"hi," she greets, the sync stone of her sygna suit glowing in steady rhythm with her breathing. her attention drifts, seeing everything here for the first time. "this is my first time here — this place is incredible."

the universe feels like it's ground itself to a halt. the stillness of the house blurs around her as she soundlessly makes her way through the living room, up the stairs, into a bedroom that no longer feels welcoming to her. every promise she's made — to greyson, to matias — is tarnished in her wake. she only knows the strangling impulse to leave, gaining its strength with each quick, shallow breath she takes. [break][break]she's so preoccupied with her thoughts that she doesn't realize matias is there until she catches a glimpse of him in her peripheral. surprise flickers across her face as she regards him in full, melting away into hurt and anger a beat later. [break][break]"why?" [break][break]her voice returns, the sharpness in her tone as accusatory as a pointed finger. [break][break]"it's not enough just to be with me?" there's a wobble in her question, a traitorous bow beneath the weight of more precarious emotions. "you have to make sure greyson knows all about it too?"

the stairs creak as annalise comes down, peering over the bannister to try and catch a glimpse of matias downstairs. her hair is still wet from the shower, slowly dampening the slouching shoulders of a shirt too large for her frame. [break][break]"matias?" [break][break]silence answers back. [break][break]she drifts into the kitchen first, then the living room, looking lost. it doesn't take much searching for her anxiety to return, tightening her throat like clenched fingers. he left her. he didn't even say anything. he's just gone —[break][break]she moves to the front door. the sound of his voice, just barely muffled beyond the wood, quells her anxiety and compels her to go out. [break][break]her gaze falls on matias first, then snaps toward the sound of a startlingly familiar voice. whatever she had thought to say dies in her throat, replaced by a beat of silent, wide-eyed staring as she processes the man in front of her. she is guilty, at least, of being here, condemned by the pallor that mantles her shocked expression. but the way she stands frozen in the doorway, dressed in matias' shirt, betrays a rapidly-snowballing revelation. [break][break]her fingers squeak against the wood of the doorframe, futilely trying to ball into a fist, and the sound is enough to break the spell. her chest rises with a sharp breath, then she turns and disappears back into the house.

[break][break]"if you're keeping regieleki, you need to prepare yourself." the words come out measured, like she's biting back her prior anger. howard slayte had spoken an unfortunate truth. there's no capturing a god and living a simple, unencumbered existence in some faraway town. "people are going to come looking for you. not just the rocket who wanted it in the first place, but people who aren't even from this dimension. you need to educate yourself and be vigilant."
