MATIAS SILPH is sitting on the edge of the couch, carefully out of reach. she supposes, as she reaches out to take the glass, that she trained him to do that. [break][break]"it was some megalopolan bitch and their toxic-chained pokemon. there were so many people there — league and rocket," she says, punctuating it with a sip that makes her grimace. the bite is unpleasant, but distracting. she distracts herself further, fixating on the way he's sitting.[break][break]"i'm not going to bite you, matias," she murmurs eventually. illeana reyes summons her back to league headquarters.[break][break]annalise has been anticipating the call since they returned from that prison. it's a usual dance for them — something horrible happens, the head professor asks her to come in for a check-up, then the conversation deviates into something conspiratorial. she imagines this will be more of the same, their priorities realigned by a week in chains. [break][break]she stops in front of the laboratory door, blinking at her silhouette in its sheen before letting herself in. her eyes sweep the sterility of the lab before finally settling on the familiar shock of white hair that belongs to the professor. [break][break]"i'm here." i'm fine. my burns have healed. the answers well in the back of her throat as their eyes meet, made rote after all the disasters they've lived through. for now, she holds them behind her teeth.

she's set on a couch so soft that it feels nothing short of divine. she melts against it, savoring a privilege that she's been deprived of for so long — comfort. warm light filters out from the fireplace, capturing itself in the glass of water MATIAS SILPH holds out to her. it reminds her of how little she's had to drink in the past week. her throat feels drier, suddenly. [break][break]"i am calm," she rasps, reaching out for it. to herself, she is being calm by comparison. she should be screaming or sobbing or something, but she's just wild-eyed and feverish from her burns.[break][break]her nose wrinkles as she brings the glass to her lips. it's definitely not just water, but she drinks nonetheless.[break][break]"i don't know what happened." [break][break]she holds the empty glass out to him and presses her fingertips against her eyelids, scrying for memories that her mind has already begun throwing soil on top of.[break][break]"i just woke up in a cell with a mask over my face and a toxic chain around my neck." she hopes whatever had been left in that glass works its magic sooner than later. "there was a guy in my cell. a rocket. i recognized him from ... "[break][break] her voice trails away, the muscle in her jaw shifting beneath her skin as she clenches her teeth together.

[break][break] she falls toward the sky, scrabbling for the pokeballs at her belt to exchange her meowstic for her altaria. her keystone flashes, then she's on the mega-evolved dragon's back. [break][break]"catch him, please!"[break][break]they chase his fading screams. talons hook into the back of cian's shirt, slowing his descent. with a flutter of wings, cotton candy hovers over the sand, carefully depositing hoenn's handsome hotshot onto the sand. [break][break]"we just fell up ... is that normal here?"[break][break]cian had made it sound like he was familiar with this place, so it's only right to squeeze him for knowledge.

the door opens. their eyes meet, but MATIAS SILPH says nothing. she's starved for a remark, a crumb of normalcy, a scrap of proof that she's not caught in some dreamlike state, but she receives nothing at all. the jacket pulled around her shivering body steals the last of her strength that she might have wasted on complaining about it. [break][break]the door closes, muffling the rain outside. her belongings slip from her fingers. the softness of her clothes pooling at her feet is in sharp contrast to her phone and pokeball belt thudding against the ground. [break][break]she doesn't lift her head to acknowledge the sound, too absorbed in trying not to join all her things on the floor. [break][break]"it happened again," she forces out, sinking against him. there's an unbearable pressure in her chest, but the explosion is dampened by lingering self-preservation. in her mind, she's still in survival mode. surviving the walk up to his door, surviving the walk through the living room, surviving —[break][break]"something took me."

the only (outdated) thing annalise knows about CIAN MAHER is that he's friends with Greyson Connors and his roommate. she's not even sure they had a proper meeting with each other until their vct match where he'd called her annalose of all things. "i'll be fine. i've been to another rift a bunch and — "[break][break]the familiar figure of a regirock erupts out of the sand. her lips part in surprise, both from seeing the golem out here and from how nonplussed cian is about it. [break][break]in the dark, the property takes on an unfamiliar shape. it takes her too long to realize she's standing on the path to MATIAS SILPH's ranch. she's not sure how she came here. she's not sure why she came here. pain returns faster than understanding does, fire running up her arm as the rain comes down more steadily. [break][break]it forces her out of inaction. with a pained whimper, she hobbles up to the porch, each step mired in lightheaded exhaustion. she white-knuckles the railing with one hand, the other still holding onto the belongings she'd collected in that room. [break][break]and once she reaches the door, she rests her weight against the frame and sucks air through her teeth. her fingers curl into her palm and she pounds her fist against the door, desperately straining to hear movement inside.[break][break] eternity stretches, then the door opens. [break][break]" — can i come in?" she asks, voice hoarse and pleading, pressing the question between them before he can reject her outright.

[break][break]a ripple passes through the crowd as Greyson Connors sets off a chain reaction. she presses during the distraction, eyes darting from her pokemon to cyllora, pecharunt, and the chained megalopolans. she's instigated fights with team rocket — but that fire in her peters out into begrudged acceptance. [break][break]their relationship has made a lot of strides, especially recently. it's only now, as she stands unfeeling to being called crazy in five different ways, that she realizes she's viewing june as more as a friend than a ward. [break][break]"fine. i'll work on my pitch."[break][break]behind her, her roaring moon rumbles impatiently as the other woman moves towards hers. she hears scales slide on stone, then feels the nudge of the beast's wing as it steps forward. [break][break]"i'm not insane," she argues, voice light, as she climbs onto the dragon's back. "let's go back; i think we've done enough for one day.
