[break][break]"you're annoying," she huffs out, her frustration summarized in a frivolous complaint better suited for MATIAS SILPH. the thought becomes an opened door, inviting the elite four to the forefront of her mind, a distraction that opens her defenses. [break][break]her altaria remains honed in on his magnezone as it sets up another ELECTRIC TERRAIN. from a distance, the dragon-type opens its beak, pink energy forming between the tomia. a MOONBLAST fires out, hoping to chip away at the steel-type and eventually run it into the ground.

"some volunteers worked with him on that, but i didn't personally."[break][break]she shifts her weight, inclining her head with unneeded approval. [break][break]annalise starts to get up, but the floor gives way beneath her. her stomach does a flip as she tumbles backwards against nothingness, fingers slipping out of Mimi Hirose's. she braces for hard ground, for pain, but the impact that rises up to meet her is startlingly soft. [break][break]annalise has little time to dwell on the loss, drawn toward the tubes as her pokemon emerge. her body aches, but she finds the strength to hobble up and throw her arms around her altaria's thin neck. even this moment is fleeting, unable to be savored with the threats lurking somewhere above them. she parts, reluctantly, follows others in the pursuit of the rest of her belongings, and recalls all of her pokemon except her aurorus.[break][break]she shivers from her burns and from the chill that rolls off the ice-type's body, steaming as it comes in contact with the hot prison air. her aurorus prepares to fire a refrigerated hyper beam at whatever threat comes next.[break][break]

[break][break]the blow chokes a strangled noise in her throat. her grip slips on the blade as she stumbles backward, holding her neck protectively as pain spreads through jaw and shoulder. but, for a moment, the strike almost feels like a secondary injury to the insult of being accused of dyeing her hair. a wall of pink washes over annalise and her roaring moon. her face twists into a grimace as she recognizes the TRICK ROOM cornering off the area around them. the dragon beneath her rumbles, the undulations of its wingbeats growing slower as the physics of this realm are toyed with. [break][break]"june?"[break][break]she is a small, slow target in the war of fast-moving gods overhead. zekrom throws a FUSION BOLT at the celesteela, its gaze distracted away from the FLEUR CANNON that rises up to meet it. another FLASH CANNON joins the pink light that suddenly engulfs the dragon and the subsequent mix of energy explodes. [break][break]a hot shockwave ripples through the air, forcing annalise to shield herself with one arm and cling to her roaring moon with the other as they're knocked askew. [break][break]the zekrom bursts from the smoke, pink flames still licking off its body, and makes a retreat. the celesteela remains, irritated by those left. the TRICK ROOM makes annalise's own escape difficult. [break][break]as she wheels her dragon away from the ultra beast, only one plan comes to mind.[break][break]june sleigh's plan. for regieleki. [break][break]she turns on dragonback, unclips an empty pokeball from her belt, and lobs it at its poised arm. it disappears into the pokeball, falling through the air into her waiting palms. [break][break]the very edge of the outcrop crumbles away at her roaring moon's back legs as they make a not-quite-soft landing. the ball continues to rock in her hands.[break][break]"holy shit," is all she gets out, the severity of everything that just happened finally catching up to her.

[break][break] her knife cuts through the air, catching nothing as she stumbles backwards. [break][break]"working?" she ekes out derision, voice weak. her breathing returns, quick and shallow, settling in her lungs around the shape of her lingering bruise. the fog conforms to her as she moves, shifting and filling empty spaces. "fuck your work!"[break][break]there is no goodness left in her heart to be moved by his distress. she doesn't want to apprehend him and let the scales of justice mete out his fate — his fate is here, sharp in her hand. her eyes, dark with resolve, watch him intently, then narrow as a delayed "shut up!" splits the gap between them.[break][break]fine — [break][break]her grip tightens on the blade's handle, white-knuckled and heavy with the weight of what she intends to do. [break][break]— she'll shut up. [break][break]she lunges again, tries to bury the blade somewhere lower. [break]

[break][break]annalise thinks little of it. she's sitting on a root veining out from beneath ever grande's dynatree, eyes lowered to her phone. occasionally, she glances up and watches the façades of city buildings disappear into the pale nothingness of the mist. this is easy work — guarding something so close to ever grande proper — so she allows herself to grow complacent as dawn flourishes into morning.[break][break] and then, somewhere in the mist, she hears it. muttering, distorted and tinny. her brows furrow as she strains to make out words captured in the sticky stillness of the fog. [break][break]" — for someone who hates me, you are constantly showing your face here."[break][break]recognition crystalizes like ice in her veins. she knows that voice just as she knows the way her heart lurches as she pushes herself to her feet. anticipation, born from a tangle of mixed feelings, tightens into a knot in her chest as she moves carefully through the fog toward him. [break][break]"you again," she greets the shape of mint frost, clenching and unclenching her fingers at her sides in restless rhythm. this time, there will be no divine intervention. no oceans rising to stop something inevitable. [break][break] "i have something of yours." [break][break] from beneath the jacket of her ranger uniform, she unsheathes the blade she had wrested from his hands during their last encounter. it glints, capturing the fog against its surface. annalise expects a taunt, something, but the masked man just storms towards her, arguing with the air.[break][break]she adjusts her grip on the knife, unsettled. the fog around him flushes blue with his neon glare. and then, once he's close enough, she gives in to the screaming desire to act. [break][break]she lunges, bracing one hand on his shoulder and returning his blade to him with the other. she hears his visor crunch beneath the initial blow as she buries the blade into plexiglass and led paneling. with a grunt of effort, she wrenches the blade free and drives it in again. [break][break]and again, this time punctuated by an otherworldly cry from somewhere beyond the mist. [break][break]pieces of the mask break away as she twists the knife free this time. unearthed from beneath circuitry and pretty lights, a weary, human gaze meets hers through the fog. the sight of the man beneath gives her pause, knife drawn back and waiting for the realization to roll through her. mint frost is a person, not just a mechanical vessel for her nightmares. [break][break]after a beat, the hesitation in her face indurates into something decisive and final, and she makes another gritted-teeth attempt at exacting her revenge. [break]

she feels the thrum of energy through her veins, the vitality of the husks she drained on her way down here, but beneath it — something else. an all-over fatigue, a gnawing hangover headache as the rush ebbs in strength. in the low light of the feeding pit, she watches everything play out in shades of magenta, each pop of conflict dancing in time to the painful racing of her heart. [break][break] "i'm fine," she lies, voice gravelly from waking-world disuse. she blinks hard a few times, but her vision remains distorted. an aura haloes around paxton concordas as she looks between him and the flaming beast. "i'm staying."[break][break]even in her weakened state, the thought of leaving repulses her. she has lived with her enemies for a week (a stretch of eternity, in her mind) and she won't deprive herself of the familiar faces around her now. [break][break]there aren't many certainties in this place, but she knows paxton concordas has her back even without a promise exchanged. she nods, her appreciation blunted beneath the swath of purple over her eyes. then she moves away, sifting through the chaos. [break][break]she ghosts into Greyson Connors's sphere of influence, eyes darting between ogerpon and Andrea Vaneau and the sprinklers overhead. she draws up short, shrinking away from the blistering heat of freya morningstar's dragonfire. [break][break]like a fox hearing a rabbit scream, annalise's head jerks toward jayden cross and his collapse. her eyes pin, sharp with recognition. he's the one from area zero. the one that thwarted her attack on THEO BECKETT. she had seen him in the wellspring mask, too, as insignificant to the grand scale of her vision as a crushed bug. [break][break]his ability washes over her. she returns to that rocket cell over and over in her mind, as helpless in one iteration as she is in another. [break][break]but the loop breaks. the visions warp and wash away from the reality beneath. in an instant, she's standing over him, her toxic chain around him, his life in her veins. several nightmarish loops ago, she had only meant to subdue him, to drink a little to stave off the effects of the poisoning but now — [break][break]the win condition becomes a whisper in the back of her mind as contempt clouds over the fear and desperation in her eyes. as she had anticipated, some of the poachers give up at first friction. annalise opens her mouth to command her dragapult, but Toki Akiyama 's noibat is set upon them before she can form the first syllable. riding the air current in dizzying circles around them, the errant offenders are dragged off their feet by the HURRICANE the little dragon kicks up. even from this distance, the wind tugs at her ranger uniform and musses her bangs out of place.[break][break]runners aren't so much of an issue, though. they can be chased down or identified later — it's the ones that try and fight back that give her a hard time. from beyond her peripheral, she hears her partner's footfalls approaching, softened by springing grass. she doesn't turn to look at him as the remaining poachers call out their pokemon, but the hard lines of her face slack with subtle gratefulness that he's arrived as planned. [break][break]"that's a perfect idea," she tells toki, motioning her dragapult towards the machoke. the ghost leads with DOUBLE TEAM, biding time as the machoke tries to punch through the ectoplasm of its copies. [break][break]overhead, storm clouds begin to gather. unlike toki, annalise remains silent against the opposition, denying them a verbal brawl or permission to leave.

annalise waits and observes. it's her only time during their sparring that she'll be able to predict the strike before it lands, so she takes advantage of paxton concordas taking the first move. sand spits beneath his heels as he closes the gap between them, then raises a leg. [break][break] a kick —[break][break] she tenses, starts a retreat, but the blow to her stomach still steals the air out of her body. she groans, the momentum taking her one more stumbling step backwards, but she doesn't fold over or fall down. pale fingers snap down to try and grab his ankle before he can pull his leg back, trying to wrench his balance out from under him. [break][break]
overhead, her altaria fluffs up her feathers protectively. the reflected DRAGON PULSE sinks into the plush defense of her COTTON GUARD, softening the sting of the blow. the dragon allows the pursuit, humming as it flits around, maintaining a careful distance from the magnezone.

[break][break]cover your ass? annalise rights herself on the dragon's back as it regains control of its flight, murmuring ancient comfort before it can think of dumping its final passenger.[break][break]"this is your plan?" [break][break]nothing answers her scream except the howl of winds. she drops below the lightning cloud with a painful pop of her ears, deafening her to the roaring moon's snarling and the grumble of thunder each time lightning explodes nearby. june is gone, spiraling down somewhere far below, and annalise has to let her go.[break][break] a show of faith forced by the ZEKROM that has perceived these raindrop humans and pokemon falling out of the sky. the god descends after june — or, at least, annalise assumes so — and her roaring moon tenses beneath her, shuttering its wings against its body and chasing zekrom through the air. [break][break]old wounds endure. this is not Remiel Calcifet's patron, but it smells close enough. this desolate world closes in on the roaring moon until the only ones that remain are it and the lightning dragon.[break][break]the clouds overhead darken. annalise reaches for another pokeball, preparing to abandon ship once again. the sky churns, then spits out an even larger pokemon. a confused and agitated CELESTEELA is enough to distract both god and mortal from the imminent clash. [break][break]annalise stares up in awe at the out-of-place ultra beast, watching it turn a rocket booster on the larger threat and fire a blinding FLASH CANNON. her roaring moon lurches forward willfully, joining the dogfight with a FLAMETHROWER.

[break][break]her toxic chain loosens over her mask, acting by her will, allowing it to fall from her face. she takes her first look of the ward without her vision obstructed, sees the megalopolan guard coming to subdue her, holds a hand out —[break][break]her toxic chain uncoils from her neck and wraps around the guard. she can feel the tingle of their life force siphoning through each flexible link, stealing their strength until the only thing keeping them on their feet is her. after being so powerless for so long, the feeling is intoxicating. [break][break]and then her retribution is meted out. the megalopolan's skull cracks against floor, thrust against the ground by the tug of her toxic chain. she turns, sees the slow-moving tendril seeking to chain her to THEO BECKETT once more, and swats it away. [break][break]don't touch me. [break][break]it's spoken in the icy look she gives him. she feels the sharpened impulse to reach out, to wrap her toxic chain around his and see if she can bleed him of his spirit, but their orders are clear: go together.[break][break]she hesitates, then turns to head to the elevator, seeking to erase anyone in her way. "it's a legendary!" annalise shouts back, shielding her eyes against the light. she would've told june sleigh if she had the prescience to predict that another zekrom existed and that it existed here of all places in all universes. june doesn't get to finish her chastising, nor does annalise get to start a rebuttal. [break][break]zekrom attacks. or maybe the thundercloud rejects their presence. the only thing annalise is certain of is the urgency to leave. june leaps from the chair, grabs her, then her pokemon. it's a flurry of movement and panic until her xurkitree punches the door open. the wind pulls on her clothes as she sidles closer to the doorway. [break][break]she grips her hand tighter as they jump. her stomach drops, but she's not wholly unused to falling out of the sky after growing up with her altaria. overhead, their spacecraft explodes against the nothingness that stretches farther than she can see, raining alien debris into the dark. in this weightless freefall, annalise reaches for a pokeball. [break][break]her roaring moon appears below them, snarling as both girls land on its back. annalise clings to june, but her pokemon weigh them all down. the dragon-type flaps hard against the air, losing altitude and cursing them in growls all the way down.
