Oh, boo-hoo, Skorpios was gonna get a little soaked before he could get his attack off. What the hell was this guy thinking?

[break][break]Oh. Apparently, he was thinking that the water would cause Skorpios's own attack to hit not just his opponent, but him, as well. For super-effective damage. Goddammit, this guy was too clever for his own good. With a frustrated roar, Skorpios instinctively skittered back, furiously swiping at the water on his body.

[break][break]Ruby's opinion went right out the window when Sergei tried to snap his Garchomp out of his attraction, only to get chased around like some cartoon character. Tengliu made a tittering, squeaky sound that might have been a laugh. Ruby grinned and put one hand on her hip to watch this little show before Valiant was forced back into his Poké Ball.

[break][break]"Bring it," Ruby taunted, hoisting her neglected bat over her shoulder. Skorpios had snapped out of the daze caused by his attack backfiring, and he growled while Tengliu did a mid-air twirl.

[break][break]Sergei reached into his pocket, and Ruby immediately prepared to cover her face with her arm. She'd dealt with enough flashbangs and gas pellets and crap today. But instead of either of those, Sergei pulled out... some kind of crystal? Ruby only remembered what it was after he'd smashed it into the ground. She and her Pokémon stepped and flew back from the huge stalagmites and crystals that jutted out of the ground.

[break][break]"Crap," Ruby muttered. "Skorpios, can you break these?"

[break][break]Eager for a chance to show off his strength, Skorpios grabbed one of the stalagmites in his claws and pulled on it. The sound of crumbling and cracking rock showed he was having at least some luck, but Ruby wasn't just going to stand there and wait. She looked for a gap to squeeze through. Even Tengliu seemed to be having a bit of trouble getting through the difficult terrain.

Unlike many of Ruby's Pokémon, Polyphemus didn't revel in or boast about his victory. Instead, he silently hovered toward his trainer to assist her.

[break][break]Kiha shot out her Toxic breath at the oncoming Tyranitar, but it wasn't enough to stop it from slamming into her with a Giga Impact. She hissed in pain as she was thrown back by the force.

[break][break]Suddenly, Kyrenai was in Ruby's personal space, backing her into a wall and boxing her in with a hand stretched out toward her throat. Her voice dipped low with threats and fire, but Ruby didn't let her glare waver. Even if this might have been a little sexy in any other situation.

[break][break]Ruby glanced past Kyrenai for a moment. Kiha was rising to her feet, and... perfect. She looked back to her foe and asked, "Or else what?"

[break][break]On cue, Polyphemus reached out with his large hands to grab Kyrenai in a Bind. Ruby would have been annoyed at how often she'd had to rely on this strategy if it hadn't been so damn useful. Meanwhile, Kiha attempted to distract the Tyranitar by Attracting it with her pheromones.

Polyphemus winced at the bright Moonblast that hit him, but he still seemed to have plenty of fight in him. He was a bulky Pokémon, after all, and while that made him rather slow, he had plenty of tricks up his incorporeal sleeves to help with that. For example, rather than closing the newfound space between him and Jaci, he could extend his own shadow and use it to strike in a Shadow Sneak.

[break][break]Ruby took another step back as the woman approached, looking somewhat like a cornered animal baring its teeth at an oncoming predator. Ruby could just see the grin on her foe's face, cast in shadow by the Moonblast behind her. But then her leg got stuck in the Sticky Glob, turning that grin into a growl.

[break][break]"If you think I'm just some little girl, you're seriously underestimating me," Ruby said, scowling behind her skull bandana. She clicked open one of her Poké Balls, releasing a shiny Salazzle onto the field. "But you know what, I'm in a good mood right now. Get out of here and I won't have Kiha make you inhale poison."

[break][break]Kiha dropped down to all fours, hissing open-mouthed to show off the Toxic gas already forming in her mouth. Meanwhile, Ruby kept her hands near her waist, ready to reach back and grab one of her own knives, if need be.

Delphi's Rough Skin protected her from many of Tsutsuji's desperate strikes, but she could feel her insides churning from the sonic attacks. She let this strange, unpleasant feeling further fuel her bloodlust. She would not be defeated by this, in her eyes, lesser Dragon. She was powerful. She was superior. She would be victorious.

[break][break]She landed next to her fallen foe and let loose a mighty, victorious roar. She may well have continued her assault had Tsubaki not recalled the Noivern back into her Ball. She'd gotten a little better at listening to her trainer when she said to hold back... but her trainer was occupied at the moment.

[break][break]Ruby expected Tsubaki to try to disarm her. Even someone totally unversed in fighting would want to avoid letting a knife stay in play. She was prepared to use her other hand to stop that from happening, but she wasn't prepared for Tsubaki to reach into her jacket and release a handful of pellets. Ruby couldn't cover her face in time and was left stumbling back, coughing and squeezing her eyes shut against the burning.

[break][break]Fuck, fuck, fuck, this wasn't good! Her grip on her knife loosened; only desperation kept her from dropping it completely. She forced her free hand blindly into her pack, pulled out the first thing she could grasp, and tossed it in front of her. A series of loud pops told her she'd thrown a Scatterbang. Okay, maybe that'd buy her a little time to get this shit out of her eyes!

[break][break]She heard Tsubaki send out another Pokémon. She didn't even need to tell Delphi what to do; the Garchomp immediately stomped the ground in a Bulldoze that cracked the cavern floor beneath her. The cracks rushed over to Shion and broke open beneath her, causing the earth itself to strike her.

So it was another person out there. They were coming closer, and given that she could faintly see Polyphemus in combat with another Pokémon through the flashes of light, they probably weren't friendly. There wouldn't be time for Jorogumo to spin a Sticky Web, but she had another trick up her sleeve.

[break][break]She took a Sticky Glob from her pack and rolled it onto the ground in front of her, hoping the darkness would cover the movement and the patch of adhesive. She took a step back and waited, her free hand hovering over her Poké Balls. She had no idea what this person might do, and after some of her encounters with the League down here, she didn't want to take any chances. They could be just as ruthless as Rocket sometimes.

[break][break]So much for the "good guys," Ruby thought with a smirk.

[break][break]Polyphemus was too close to dodge the Stone Edge that erupted beneath him. His body tilted back from the impact, only for his head to quickly snap back onto his target with a flash of his single red eye. A shadowy red aura appeared around his fist, which he thrust forward in a Payback-powered punch.

The distant light came to a halt, prompting Ruby to stop in her tracks. Then, it was drowned out by a blinding light, which shot into the darkness. Ruby stepped to one side and managed to avoid it, but it illuminated her figure, blowing any remaining cover she might have had.

[break][break]Annoying, but not too much of a problem. Polyphemus emerged from the floor at that moment and aimed a Shadow Punch at where the Moonblast had come from.

Not quite the result Ruby had been hoping for, but the baby dragon was down, and the big one would be occupied for a while. Unfortunately, the close quarters immediately came back to bite Ruby in the ass when the man's Tatsugiri sent a tsunami of Muddy Water their way.

[break][break]"Shit!" Ruby shouted as she covered her face with her arms. Her Pokémon took the brunt of the move, but she'd be scrubbing mud out of her clothes after this. Poor Jorogumo was washed right out of her web and forced to the ground, dazed. She was in no condition to fight after that onslaught. Ruby bit back the urge to tell her she'd done well and returned her to her Net Ball. She had to stay tough out here; she could praise her Pokémon later.

[break][break]Tengliu let out a weak, pained squeak that had Ruby whipping her head toward the Frosmoth. That hit shouldn't have done that much damage, right? But then she saw the dark, purplish flush on her face and the Poison Barb lying on the ground nearby.

[break][break]"Oh, you sneaky bastard."

[break][break]She wasn't going to take that lying down. In a flash of light, Skorpios the Drapion appeared on the field, his size making him a decent wall in these tight corridors. "Thunder Fang that fish!" she commanded, not realizing it was half-Dragon type. Skorpios roared, summoning sparks around his fangs, and rushed forward to deliver the bite to Commander Wise.

[break][break]"Tengliu..." She couldn't believe she was doing this. "Attract."

[break][break]The Frosmoth's eyes flickered with mischief. She fluttered over to Valiant, deliberately making her flight unsteady to play up just how badly she'd been hurt by Commander Wise's attack and Sergei's Poison Barb. She looked straight into Valiant's eyes pleadingly. How could he allow his teammate to hurt a lady such as herself? Surely he wouldn't stand for this injustice, right...?

Ruby grinned under her bandana. "What else do you expect from someone like me?" Even if she was prey for a moment, she'd use her venom to turn the tables.

[break][break]Tsubaki held up her fists, and this time, Ruby didn't wait for her to advance. When Delphi launched into the air, Ruby raised her knife and slashed its serrated edge at Tsubaki's hands. If this girl was going to use her fists as weapons, then at the very least, Ruby would try to make it painful for her.

[break][break]In the air, Delphi was visibly pained by the Boomburst reverberating through her, but she didn't let that stop her from crashing into her foe like a meteor. The crunching sound invigorated her, and she followed up with a Crunch of her own.

Isaac didn't say the name out loud, but Ruby had been thinking of Johanna since Isaac had mentioned defectors. She'd left Rocket and gotten a cushy job as a Gym Leader right near League HQ. She wasn't the only one who'd jumped ship, either. Walsh had sent out a message about one of the Admin's betrayals and put a big target on his head, and Ruby knew at least one Beast and a scientist had gone running to the League earlier this year. Who knew how many other grunts had followed in their footsteps?

[break][break]Was it worth the risk? How was someone supposed to live with Rocket's blade at their back for the rest of their life? What extent would Rocket go to for revenge? Would they target their loved ones, too? The thought made Ruby's stomach turn. Even if she was just some grunt, she couldn't put Jade at risk like that. Not after everything she'd fought for.

[break][break]"I'm not going to let this kill me," Ruby said. "I'll fight. I'll get stronger. I'm not letting anything happen to me or the people I actually give a damn about."

[break][break]She looked to Isaac with grim, determined eyes during that last sentence. She wasn't the mushy-feely type, and she hated the idea of relying on anyone. But maybe that look was her way of saying she'd be there, no matter what suicidal plan Rocket cooked up next. If she couldn't leave, then she could survive. That would be her defiance.

The girl shouted, and her foot came down toward Ruby's head. Of course, she wasn't just going to sit there and take it, but she barely needed to roll out of the way before Polyphemus's cold hand wrapped around her and stopped the strike dead in its tracks. Ruby would not thank him, least of all in front of an enemy, lest she show emotional weakness.

[break][break](Isaac Merlo could say whatever he damn well wanted about these emotions not being weak. A ruthless foe would exploit anything it could.)

[break][break]With Tsubaki restrained, Ruby stepped back and stood up straight, breathing heavily. She drew her tanto-style knife from its concealed holster and gripped it in her right hand. All right, if this girl was going to play dirty, then so was Ruby.

[break][break]"You don't know a goddamn thing about me!" she finally had the chance to shout back.

[break][break]There was an explosive shockwave, a roar, and then winds that whipped through the cavern. Polyphemus tried to brace himself against the storm, but he was forced to let go of the Noivern and her trainer and dragged back into his Dusk Ball. There was a flash, revealing that Delphi had been dragged out in his place. The Garchomp had little idea what was going on, but she saw what looked like enemies in the low light and roared at them.

[break][break]Okay, fine. Ruby could work with this. Garchomp tended to live in caves, after all; maybe Delphi wouldn't have too much trouble here.

[break][break]"Delphi, Dragon Rush that Noivern!" Ruby commanded, flicking her flashlight up to Delphi's target.

[break][break]Delphi spread arms and leapt into the air, catching what remained of the Whirlwind under her fins. A fiery purple aura began to engulf her as she tucked in her elbows so that her fins stuck out like a jet plane's wings, and she launched herself toward Tsutsuji.

[break][break]Ruby didn't waste any time watching to see if the attack would connect. She had her own foe to focus on.

Jorogumo screeched in surprise and pain when the Dreepy Quick Attacked into her. The sand on the ground gathered in a Sand Tomb to trap her, turning that surprise into chittering anger.

[break][break]"Teng, Ice Beam the Garchomp!" Ruby shouted. "Gumo, Shadow Sneak!" It wasn't exactly sneaky when the command was being shouted like that, but subtlety had long since flown out the window.

[break][break]Icy blue light gathered in the gem on Tengliu's forehead. The Frosmoth dipped forward, little arms held open for balance in a way that almost made her look like she was bowing, and shot the beam of ice at the Garchomp. Meanwhile, Jorogumo hissed, and her shadow extended toward the Dreepy and launched itself upward in a burst of Ghost-type energy.

[break][break]Her opponent's question actually caught her off guard. "The fuck kind of question...? Whatever. What are you doing here? If you're trying to get to the rift, you'll have to get through us first!"

Okay, that was a new one. These iron metaphors were starting to remind her of Aurelie Lefevre.

[break][break]She scowled and watched the caverns move behind them. Walsh really hadn't given a damn if his mineral-mining operation could have doomed the whole region, including his own people. And now, they were fighting on an open battlefield. Sure, they had operations like this going to steal the League's supplies and generally screw them over, but Rocket's presence here was no secret.

[break][break]"What the hell are we supposed to do about it?" Ruby finally asked. "Walk right up to the higher-ups and tell them their plans suck?" She let out a short, sardonic laugh. "Yeah, that'll go great for both of us. You think they'll bury us next to each other, or will they just toss our bodies out to sea?"

[break][break]She realized something. "Besides, isn't half of why we're here to get more resources so we don't bleed our asses dry?"

[break][break]She had no idea what Rocket was planning to do with these "Seal Stones," but they wouldn't be going after them if they weren't worth something, right?

Jorogumo didn't even need to sound the alarm when the Dreepy was caught in her web. Its trainer announced his presence by shouting the little thing's name. Ruby swung her light in the voice's direction and saw the entangled Dreepy, a trainer she didn't recognize, and... oh, that Garchomp could be a problem.

[break][break]"Who the hell are you?!" she shouted at the stranger. Without waiting for an answer, she tossed out a Net Ball, releasing her Frosmoth. Jorogumo hissed and crawled over to the Dreepy to stand over her threateningly.
