Ruby flipped Xenon Antheil right back off in return. Hopefully, this little "test" would kick her ass so Ruby could have a good laugh about it. Arachne chittered chidingly, and it took a moment for Ruby to realize that was directed at her. "What?" she whispered to her Pokémon. "She deserved it." A shorter chitter this time. Ruby knew exactly what it meant but refused to respond this time.

[break][break]Isaac Merlo's voice had Ruby perking up more than she would have liked. Unlike many others in the room, including herself, he responded to Xenon Antheil's little display with a cool calm and a robotic Pokémon of his own. Goddammit, why did Isaac have to be unexpectedly cool? It made everything way more complicated. He also suggested that, since this was likely a teamwork thing, people get to know each other instead of showing off or brooding in the corner. Ruby frowned. She wasn't exactly the most social of Rockets as it was, and her already-soured mood didn't help with that.

[break][break]Oh, look, here came the biggest source of her souring barrelling right toward Isaac's Iron hands. She scowled as she pushed Isaac aside to get to his Pokémon. Dammit, she wished she'd brought Atlas along for this. He sure as hell wasn't a "worthless primitive Pokémon."

[break][break]Isaac had quite a crowd forming around him. Gerald Kaiser, ana fell (whose mention of the Ultra Beasts' destruction made Ruby's jaw clench), Ashley Shepard... "Well, aren't you popular," Ruby said to him in almost a grumble. She crossed her arms in an almost protective manner, uncomfortable with being around so many people and being expected to be social. She didn't bother with introducing herself. If someone wanted to know something about her, everything important was on the screen. And she couldn't exactly say she was looking forward to working with some of these pricks.

[break][break]Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Asriel Pryde leaning against a wall by himself. Case in point. At least he was being quiet for now, so Ruby only spared him a cursory glance.

Polyphemus looked uncharacteristically shocked at the Hydreigon's presence before he flinched back from the Crunch. Seeing that normally stoic face break made Ruby more nervous than the fact that the Dusknoir looked like he was hanging on by a thread. Shit. Her gaze slid to Kiha and the Tyrannitar. The latter wasn't attacking, instead trying to fight off the Attract inflicted on him. Okay, that was good. This wasn't over just yet.

[break][break]The cold steel against her throat, however, drastically changed things. Despite her shock, a sardonic grin crawled onto her face. "Hypocrites," she managed with her reduced oxygen. "How do I know... you won't cut it, anyway?"

[break][break]Polyphemus moved his one-eyed gaze back and forth between his new opponent and Ruby. It seemed he didn't want to risk angering Kyrenai further and putting Ruby in danger. Kiha, on the other hand, blinked at the Tyranitar with Fake Tears in her eyes.

[break][break]Her eyebrows shot up at Johanna's question, an expression of surprise that quickly turned into anger. "'Better'?! How the hell am I supposed to feel anything but pissed seeing all this? What gives you the right to walk away from Rocket and just sit in the League's lap like you didn't do anything?!"

[break][break]Her cool façade had quickly melted away under the heat of her rage. She took a single step forward as she ranted, only the thought of being surrounded by the League stopping her from making the movement anything more than emphasis. Perhaps Johanna would notice the way Ruby had emphasized the word "you."

"If it was, it'd be easier to know who to punch in the damn face." The words came out quieter than her previous ones, almost as if they weren't fully meant for this conversation.

[break][break]The tiniest hint of a smile tugged at one corner of Ruby's mouth. "Yeah, no kidding." It was a combination of an unspoken "You're welcome" and her understanding that she, too, had needed her head pulled out. Arceus, she'd been pathetic for the past couple of months. She needed to snap out of it.

[break][break]His question had her rolling her eyes. "Psh, that'd be fucking stupid. I'm not gonna punch myself in the face."

[break][break]Saying it out loud like that helped a bit. Yeah, it had been Ruby's choice to run right into Team Rocket's clutches after her family fell apart, but she hadn't been the one to launch that insane mission into the atmosphere, and she hadn't been the one to rip through the fabric of space-time and freeze everything over. Nor had she been the one to stand boldly against such colossal power to protect someone she loved.

Maybe this whole setup was meant to be intimidating. And, sure, between the monotone voice announcing the start of the evaluation, the multitude of names and headshots on the screen, and the obvious signs of being observed, it was a bit unsettling. But Ruby didn't let it bother her. She was used to relying on herself and her Pokémon. The higher-ups could watch all they wanted, distant and uncaring. All they'd see was her surviving like she always had.

[break][break]There were only two familiar faces among the sea of Rocket grunts present, and Ruby didn't know if that spoke more for her lack of sociability or for just how many of them there were. The first was Isaac Merlo, the only person she'd ever be comfortable calling a friend. She was surprised to see him here, given how much he tried to avoid violence, but she supposed he had his own reasons. The other... Ugh, it was Asriel Pryde. They'd been to the Mechanical Kingdom a couple of times together, and Ruby thought he was a bossy pain in the ass.

[break][break]Someone Ruby didn't know shouted to get people's attention, and Ruby immediately wanted to punt her off that mechanical Hydreigon she rode. Beside her, Arachne chittered her annoyance.

[break][break]"Shut the hell up and put your money where your mouth is!" Ruby called back to Xenon Antheil. At least she wasn't alone in finding the girl obnoxious... mostly. "Don't encourage her," she said to Sylvia Cousteau.

[break][break]Unfortunately for Shred, she did overhear his comment as she passed by. She bumped him with her elbow in a way that wasn't meant to hurt, but Ruby wasn't exactly the gentle sort. "We're all fucked if we don't get our acts together," she muttered to him before continuing on her way. She needed to find Isaac Merlo and talk to someone actually sane before she got driven to pulling her knives out.

[break][break]Arceus, Asriel Pryde was starting to get on Ruby's nerves. "Fuck off, I was making sure nothing was gonna jump out and kill us," she snapped back. "You're lucky it was just some broken Volcanion." And the weird lamp, but this wasn't the time to mention that. Ruby needed to save her breath for getting away from the not-broken Volcanion that was currently after them.

[break][break]She and Belial were going to be bait, it seemed. "Motherf—fine." Making sure the Volcanion was still following them, she bolted for the bridge. Only adrenaline kept her from freezing at what she saw beneath it.

[break][break]Bones. Thousands of them, undoubtedly human, piled up beneath the bridge like they were trash that had been thrown out.

Ruby couldn't see the flinch, too busy desperately scrubbing her eyes to flush the gas out, but the fact that the girl's silhouette didn't get any closer was a good sign. She blinked a deluge of tears out of her eyes, vision still not clear but definitely getting better. What else did she have that she could use to keep this chick away from her?

[break][break]Delphi narrowed her eyes and huffed out of her nose when the Dragalge stood firm against her attack. She tensed, ready to spring forward for another strike.

[break][break]But then the ground beneath her foes fell.

[break][break]Instinctively, Delphi spread her fins and jumped away from the collapsing cliffside. Ruby, vision still spotty, only vaguely understood what was happening, but hearing the falling rocks and seeing the girl's shape fall downward made her gasp, eyes popped open for just a moment before she couldn't stand to have them that wide.

[break][break]When she shaking stopped, Ruby carefully stepped forward and looked down. She could only see darkness below, and she had a feeling that wasn't just because of her addled vision. A shaky breath left her. Was the girl...?

[break][break]Delphi stepped forward, spreading her fins again, but Ruby held out an arm. "No. It's not worth it." Delphi turned to her trainer with a low growl. Ruby just sighed and returned her back to her Ultra Ball.

[break][break]The threat was gone. That was all that mattered. Whether she was dead or alive wasn't any of Ruby's business, and she wasn't about to make it hers. She held a hand to her weary face and let out another sigh. For someone that young to be down here, fighting like that, looking for all the world like she would have caved Ruby's head in if she'd had the chance...

[break][break]Fuck, she was thinking too much again. She needed to find somewhere to recuperate and properly flush this poison out of her. With a tap of her Net Ball, she released Arachne and let her trusted partner guide her to safety.

When Skorpios snapped the first stalagmite clean off its base, he looked at Ruby expectantly.

[break][break]"Good job," she said quickly and quietly. It was enough to invigorate Skorpios, who got to work on pulling out the next one even faster. Soon, he'd created a gap small enough for Tengliu to flutter through. She turned back to flash Skorpios an appreciative look, which had the Drapion grinning and... Was he seriously blushing?

[break][break]"Focus!" Ruby snapped. With an embarrassed grumble, Skorpios grasped another stalagmite.

[break][break]It didn't matter a damn bit, though, because Tengliu cried out in surprise when another one, this one made of crystal, popped out of the ground right in front of her.

[break][break]"Oh, come on!" Ruby shouted in frustration.

[break][break]It was at that point that she heard Sergei command his Tatsugiri to use Muddy Water again. What the hell, was he trying to drown her and her team?! Except the sound never came toward them; it went away from them. Right toward the rift.

[break][break]Nearly growling in frustration, Ruby pooped open an Ultra Ball to release Delphi. "Bulldoze these down!"
