Yeah, Ruby knew that BS answer wouldn't fly. At least they weren't dead yet.

[break][break]The sad thing was that Ruby didn't know how much Walsh said was Rocket propaganda and how much was actual Kanto League bullshit. Hoenn's own League wasn't exactly a shining example of goodness, either. Either way, Ruby was getting a chance to redeem herself with this next choice. Sparing the man was out of the question if she wanted that redemption. Forcing him to join Team Rocket probably wouldn't end well. That only left execution. But who would carry it out?

[break][break]After a bit more thought, Ruby made her choice. It seemed like it'd fit Walsh's dramatic style.

Morbid curiosity brought Ruby back for another DRK Triad member's route, and this time, Ruby herself (or at least her digital counterpart) was a member. Freaking great. Well... it was better than being on the other side of their wrath, she supposed. They were meeting somewhere public, which had its own ups and downs. On the one hand, most people would be too busy minding their own business to pay them any mind. On the other hand, talking about DRK Triad stuff in public was obviously a bad freaking idea. Whatever, at least it was just a game.

[break][break]Ruby tossed her Talonflame's Poké Ball toward the Frosmoth that had landed on one of her berry trees. Already, she could see frost creeping up on the leaves, making her scowl. Those seeds had been expensive, dammit!

[break][break]"Acrobatics! Get her off the tree!"

[break][break]Raróg let loose a mighty screech and flew forward so fast that the Frosmoth didn't even have time to react before being struck. She squeaked and fluttered backwards off the tree, but she quickly recovered enough to look at her foe with big, pleading eyes. Raróg hovered in place, entranced by the Attract.

[break][break]"Oh for—" Ruby sighed, fished a Net Ball out of her bag, and threw it at the Frosmoth.

Yeah, this was about what Ruby expected for a freaking Declan Walsh route. She still couldn't believe Macro Cosmos had made this, though. Did they want to have Rocket kicking down their doorstep or something? The only relief was that it wasn't some flowery romance scenario. Not like the Kanto takeover was "better," per se, but it was way more fitting.

[break][break]She'd only clicked this one out of morbid curiosity, but maybe she could get some info while she was here. If Macro Cosmos knew anything about Rocket's current goings-on, Walsh would definitely want to know.

[break][break]Honestly, she hated all three of these options. She wanted to stay on Walsh's good side, but she didn't want to make a fool of herself, either. Fine, the second was at least close to what she'd say.

Ruby glowered at Asriel's sharp response. She'd been fishing for an actual explanation, but all she'd gotten was snark from the kid. "Great," she mumbled sarcastically. At least the ride across the zip-lines went off without a hitch. Asriel even had a way to lead them to the engine room despite their unfamiliar surroundings. It meant that Ruby didn't have to send out her creepy Dusknoir, but she couldn't help but feel like he was showing off a bit.

[break][break]Pryde got to work on getting the engine started up with his Carkol, leaving Ruby with fuck all to do. "I'm gonna look around. Won't go far."

[break][break]She wandered the corridors just outside the engine room, eyes peeled for any signs of the mechanical menaces that plagued this place. A flash of orange around a corner had her grabbing Delphi's Ultra Ball, but she realized that the Volcanion was crushed under a pile of metal scrap, unmoving. Ruby sighed in relief.

[break][break]Its eyes opened at the sound.

[break][break]She gripped Delphi's Ultra Ball tight, but the creature didn't move. It just stared at Ruby, its expression almost plaintive. Slowly, its mouth creaked open. Ruby wasn't sure why, but she felt like it wanted to tell her something. Yet all that escaped it was a quiet hiss before electricity jumped through its maw. It spasmed, then went still again, lifeless eyes still open.

Ruby had figured that Isaac's missing eye was related to the worst day of his life on Mt. Pyre. Like he'd said, eyeballs didn't just get up and walk away. She, too, couldn't laugh at Isaac's lame attempt as a joke, not even at his expense. All that bubbled from her throat was a short "Mm."

[break][break]She let her head turn toward the memorial she'd set up. "Think you can guess what happened," she muttered. "You may be... well, you, but you're perceptive." Arceus, she didn't even have it in her to call him a clown. Looking at that photo again made her feel numb, but she couldn't tear her eyes from it. They'd been so cute back then. Part of her wanted to bottle up that moment and live in it forever. Another part of her wanted to go back in time and tell her it was a stupid idea to get so comfortable in a "normal" life. She'd never get something like that, not without having it ripped away from her, taking part of her with it.

[break][break]"Cerb was supposed to be a service Pokémon." She didn't know why she was saying this, but she couldn't stop the words from being spoken. It felt like she wasn't even speaking to Isaac but to the picture itself. "But he was a stubborn lil' shit. Always wanted to do things his way. Never listened to what the trainers tried to tell him. We tried battling with him instead, and he was a natural. Tough and clever but still stubborn as hell. I figured he'd make a good guard dog, so I offered to take him in. And he was stubborn 'til the very end."

[break][break]She still remembered the look he'd given her before he was frozen solid. That determination, that love, that regret that he couldn't do better for her... It hurt in a way that not even her nail bat could hurt someone, but she didn't want to let go of it, and she didn't know why.

Nope, she still had no idea what was on Bewear's mind. But he wasn't threatening her or anything, so that was a good sign.

[break][break]He led her to what must have been Johanna's personal space in this carnival land. It was like a miniature house; did Johanna actually live here? It'd be safe here in the middle of League Town, that was for sure. Bewear knocked on the door, and a voice called for them to come in. Ruby knew it was Johanna's voice, but it sounded different. She definitely wasn't the same timid, hesitant girl Ruby had met all those months ago.

[break][break]She didn't get any time to think on that before she was literally pushed inside. She stumbled in, managing to right herself with her own strength and force of will, but it was still far from her best entrance. Inside, she caught the eye of the Queen Jester herself. Johanna froze, looking like a cornered Deerling and only able to speak a single word.

[break][break]Though Ruby had been dragged and pushed around enemy territory, seeing Johanna like that made confidence swell up in her again. She crossed her arms and leaned against the nearest wall with a predatory smirk. Johanna still held all the cards here, even if she didn't realize it. This was her territory, and more importantly, it was League territory. Ruby was just one Rocket; she hadn't brought any backup aside from her trusty Pokémon. But Johanna looked scared, and Ruby was going to take advantage of that for as long as she could.

Would Cerberus still be alive if she'd done that? Definitely. Some things weren't worth clinging to her pride over. She just wished she hadn't learned that the hard way.

[break][break]She scoffed when Isaac said things had gotten "hairier." She couldn't even laugh at his "snorting rocks" comment. "That's putting it lightly." She took another gulp of her water. It didn't help much, minus the usual "hydration is good for you" thing. Whoop-de-doo.

[break][break]Her eyes darted over to Isaac at his last statement, though her head remained still. Shit, it sounded like he'd been through the wringer, too. A sick part of Ruby was grateful that she wasn't the only one who'd had a bad time of it. She'd already known that, though. She'd watched kepler brueshaber's Dragapult disintegrate at the hands of the meteoroid's Deoxys and heard Andrea Vaneau desperate cry for her own fallen Pokémon. Having it be someone she knew well was different, though. Especially when it was someone she trusted so much.

The Zoroark wasn't quite what Ruby had been expecting, but it explained why it'd been susceptible to the Seviper's poison. At least they didn't have to worry about it suddenly waking up and striking back.

As much as she wanted to take one of her knives out to threaten the man with, she needed both arms free to squeeze his throat if he tried anything funny. Instead, she tilted her head to guide Arachne to stand in front of him. Her fangs would make a fine substitute for a blade.

[break][break]She smacked the side of the man's face. "Hey," she said into his ear. "Wake up."

[break][break]The man gasped, still sluggish in Ruby's grip. As soon as he saw Arachne in front of him, he started to struggle, but Ruby tightened her grip around his neck again.

[break][break]"Try anything and you're not waking up this time," she growled.

[break][break]The man hissed out a breath. "You fucks are with Rocket, aren't you?"

[break][break]"I'm asking the questions. Where's your partner? I know there's two of you."

[break][break]"I'm not telling you shit, you crazy bi—gahk!"

[break][break]This time, Ruby pressed against the front of his throat. She'd learned how to do a proper choke hold just a few years ago; specifically, she'd learned to press against the side of the neck to restrict blood flow rather than oxygen. Pressing against the throat could kill someone.

[break][break]"Talk if you wanna live."

[break][break]She loosened her grip just enough for the man to take a grateful gasp of air. "I don't care what you do to me. I'm not letting you hurt him."

[break][break]Zev, meanwhile, seemed to be in luck. Within the vigilante's clothes was a stack of folded papers with times and locations written on them.
