You know, they could've just left. Walked away, let what happens happen. But Ashley and Isaac were too good for their own good, so even as the royal Golurk vanguard stands before them. The guards, who bowed to the whim of the specter that lingered over the Truesdales like a puppeteer pulling strings. The root cause to the evil here. It had to be stopped.

Hearth would curl into a ball, that violet fire launching towards the Golurk. But the thing about these Golurk was, it wasn't that easy. As soon as the polearm Golurk is chased, the other with the shield defends it, letting Hearth collide into a metal shield, utilizing PROTECT. The shield melts onto the ground, but with the blow deafened, the one with the polearm swings it down at Hearth, in a full 90 degree arc down to the floor. An attempt of a HEAVY SLAM with an edge.

That's what Sunny is for, and Ashley has a plan. The polearm is made of metal, likely iron. Meaning it's magnetic. With the force of the strike, Ashley can't prevent it.

"Electro Ball to Hearth's left!" As he commands, Sunny conjures the ball, and fires it right to the left side of Hearth, missing the Typhlosion.

As soon as it connects to the floor, the subtle movement of the polearm strikes into the ground next to the Hisuian Typhlosion. Ashley smirks. The Golurk Vanguard weren't the only two who could work together. All it require was a little finessing to make work properly, but they could win this twisted game of two Fire Pokemon against to Ground Pokemon. They could press the advantage.

Both Golurk weren't done though. They would be a lot harder to take down than the previous foes. This was just the warm-up round.

bat-tl;dr:
- Hearth connects with a shield. It isn't effective in the slightest.
-- Sunny provides a defense to Hearth with an Electro Ball forcing the polearm into the carpet next to Hearth, giving them an opening.
--- The Golurk are unphased.

Cloud and Maple's little stunt does pay off in dividends, as after the first few bubbles freeze, light as a feather around the couple, Maple would put a singular paw on Cloud's small shoulder, looking at the two. Now this? This was best friends territory, and as Maple smiles towards the little pinniped Pokemon, he gives one response that they did good work.

On the ice rink now, in a small conjured patch of snow, right in front of Cloud, it showed 'Thank you, friend', messily made.

And that stunt does pay off, because as they reach the mistletoe, and Ashley looks back for a moment towards Kepler, they stop right below it. Placing his good hand around Kepler's waist, he's held steady in that left arm. Though he can't use his other right now, he pulls Kep close. The world around them, the way the air fills with those heart-shaped bubbles, how the light from the ice rink bounces upon each one, to another, to how they pop in clouds of snow give their peripheral an frosted glass effect, for just moments at a time. The luminescent glare upon each would allow Ashley and Kepler a climatic little moment.

"You made it. Not just here, but through this year." Ashley's eyes are focused down towards Kepler's own. "I love you. And thank you for loving me. Here's to many more."

Mistletoe kisses; a weird tradition, really. No less cute. Ashley goes in. As Maple watches on from the distance, the little Glaceon is now rubbing the shoulder to the Brionne. They did it.

When Ashley first met Mint, he just thought he was a pretty face to booty blast into orbit in the pool. Considering his assumption had left 'cute giggly boy, bit dumb' in his head, that guilt would be carried with him. Judging from his own tendencies and lovelife, Ashley preferred a smart partner as is.

Which, had they not paved over that awkwardness, would have made it worse.

Thankfully, he does have Kep now, and as he takes a breath in. At least he never has to linger. Instead, he sees Mint give a thumbs up, and Linguini takes care of the rest of it, which has Ashley and Sunny both watching in a bit of intrigue. It would have been fine...

Until, that is, when Mint mentions whose Gym it is, and Ashley's smile disappears.

"Ah." He knows the guy enough. They camped, after all. It leaves a bad, irritating taste in his mouth as he closes his eyes and exhales. How long had he been holding in that breath. He has to push through that though. The League had some good people. Josh was intense, but he wasn't a bad guy. Silver eyes look back to Sunny, who worriedly enough hugs into Ashley's head.

"Shouldn't be too hard then. If you need me for it, let me know. I got you."

No favoritism. The League was a plague and needed its own reformation.

Zev was already on it, and that let Ashley be at ease, as the younger Rocket listened. The way Giorgo Raptis spoke, the way that he acted so entitled, it didn't even phase Ashley. The man who screamed and whimpered on the ground was much more concerning to Ash than the one who stoo up and snarled like a rabid dog.[break][break]

Some dogs needed to learn who held the leash.[break][break]

"Wonderful, you do know. Good boy." He now was treating him like one, and wow did he learn well from Theo. Where the heck was this coming from? "But you did invite us, Mr. Raptis, when you decided you no longer needed our help." Craning his neckt o the side to see the man with the shot through kneecap, Ashley swallowed down the bile that wanted to come up.[break][break]

I can do this. Keep it up.[break][break]

Sweat trickles down his neck, as silver eyes turn back towards the idiot son. "We're not demanding you. Think of it as... an ultimatum. You can listen like a good boy and sit back down. Or. I can acquaint you to a newfound appreciation for the number eight, and then you'll sit down anyways." His pistol still in his hand, his threat was loaded, all he had to do was make good on his promise.[break][break]

"What's it gonna be? You want your treat now, or am I going to push your nose in the carpet for the mess you made?" After all, that knee was probably gushing on the carpet was Mr. Raptis' own doing.[break]

A deep drink of his own second, and Ashley's face was already red. He found himself staring. He can barely speak. He really could look at Kepler for awhile. His cheeks heat up, his heart is beating harder. He coughs, snapping himself out of it. Liquid courage drives him.

So, when Kep speaks, first making him smile like an idiot, and than his worries, Ashley decides to move his chair over, next to Kepler, and he moves his good arm (his left) around Kep's shoulders.

"I know, Kep." He feels himself getting mushier. This wasn't the drunk part of him he wanted Kep to see, but he decided to roll with it. "You know, I tried running away after what happened to Kanto. But even so, it found its way back to me. For every moment of pain and abuse... in return, there's the fact that I met people like Isaac Merlo , ana fell , Eris Halla , and Cillian Quinn . And you."

He forgoes the fact that for a moment in Mt. Pyre, he wanted to die for everything. Ashley doesn't need to traumatize his boyfriend. He throws back the drink, and he can feel his inhibitions fading away.

"Even if I do get hurt. I have someone waiting for me at home. A reason to live for aside from just wanting to. A motivation. A drive. You're my muse. So I'll always find a way back home." He hiccups. He gives a loving smile. One hand on Kep's shoulder, to let his head lean into him, if Kep wanted it.

Ice skating has Ashley's lips curve upwards. That put him in a great mood. Because he remembers what he did for his birthday; ice skating with kepler brueshaber. Even with one arm, that night was magical. For just a moment, he smiles enough to brighten the world, to shine a light over it all. Eris and Isaac can see it. He almost looks drunk on that happiness!

He finally snaps back when Eris talks about snow castles and ice fishing. Ashley chuckles. "Sure thing. I love ice skating. I can do that with one arm-" even if he shouldn't.

He gave a look towards Isaac, and his smile brightens a deal more.

"You ice skate? It's one of my favorite hobbies in winter." He'd admit that to Isaac, and this year he was only more sure of that than before, before turning back to Rosie and Eris. "Which means, we will absolutely be going to an ice skating rink the moment my arm gets better."

It was a promise. He wouldn't dare go back on it now.

One last chance to woo the audience. One last chance to show the crowd what they are made of. If Ashley got better, and thought to exercise, maybe he could tattoo a dragon on his back, and then toss his haori off with reckless abandon, showing them how tough he was, with Toothless giving off another dragon dance. But no. Ashley wasn't buff enough for that. Next year, maybe.

What was toughness? What is it in the grand scheme of things? What does it mean to be the toughest person in the room? Ashley knows the answer.

So he speaks for the first time in the contest.

"To be tough is to allow vulnerability within oneself. To weather the storm we call life and come out a stronger person. To stare into the face of defeat, and accept it, even if we were to win in the end." Toothless would uncoil from Ashley's neck as the little dragon scarf that he was, as his trainer spoke his truth.

Toothless is too small to ride. But Ashley smiles, as the little Dratini begins to SHED SKIN, leaving behind what it once was. With a snap from Ashley's good hand, another THUNDER WAVE comes from the old skin of the Dratini, as the little blue snake emerges longer, stronger, more than they were before.

He just hopes the symbolism isn't too heavy-handed.

"Even something as small and cute as my Dratini is tough." The Dratini DRAGON RUSHes back to Ashley's side, and attaches back like a scarf. Ashley ruffles the little wing on its head, and remarks. "I hope my performance has shown that. Thank you all."

Ashley bows, with Toothless doing one himself from the trainer's neck, the skin shed from Toothless a reminder of that.

That pit in his stomach is like free fall. Where does the falling end? Does it even have one? His silver eyes shrink, looking down at the floor. Fuck. She did have a husband. Ashley saw the guy. "Yeah... Tucker Truesdale. Think that's what she called him. He left the house, so it's not him." He thinks it isn't, anyways. He can only hope that was him.

With Isaac saying everything he wanted to, he nods. They needed to end this monstrosity before it got out. With a new release from Isaac, it helped settle Ashley's nerves a little more, knowing this Typhlosion was the last of his six and at the ready at a moment's notice.

Both Trainers were at two left, Ashley sitting at another with Lucia resting. The sheer weight of this manor was pushing down on them both, the spiritual pressure like wearing a ton on their bodies at all times.

"Yeah. Let's do this."

Pulse continued to act as their light source, with Sunny on Ashley's shoulder on the constant, as he opens the door. He holds it open for Echo, Hearth, and Isaac, looking down the hall. Two monsters sat in the hallway, clad in armor. Cyan golems, wielding medieval-looking weaponry; a zweihander on one, a sword and shield on the other. Golurks. They block the way.

One fight before the final boss.

"Well shit. Looks like the royal guard is standing in our way, man." He snickers, Sunny bouncing on his shoulder, at the ready. Pulse continues to light the scene, meaning Ashley had two Pokemon. How disadvantageous.

- Hearth is out! Door opens, two Golurk in armor outside.
-- one with a zweihander, one with a sword and shield.
- Pulse is lighting up the battle, Ashley hasn't moved yet. The Golurk are the LAST FIGHT before the final boss.

Down the drink, time to think.

Ashley finds himself staring at Kepler a minute longer than he intended to, and as he holds that hand tightly. Each finger between, his heartbeat hard.

When he asks for plans of the new year, Ashley smiles. "Once I get fixed up... I'm gonna try to aim for Admin-ship. Exercise. Train my Pokemon up." He takes a second to close his eyes, as the next drink is put before the two, and he nurses this one; sipping it little by little.

"Lots of dates." Ashley isn't hiccuping yet, but he can feel the strength of the first drink, as he takes a sip of the next. "Thinking next one, you can show me movies you like, or shows. We can stay home, I can order takeout."

He knows Kepler likes it home, so he's willing to engage in that introversion. He wasn't a complete extrovert himself, so he was fine doing that. "You?" he asks himself.

Cocky. Just like Ash when he was young. Meaning he needed to be tempered properly. But, Theo has taught him a lot back then. In order to do this properly, he remembers well the one lesson that would be used here.[break][break]

Nothing ensures loyalty more than fear. A lesson THEO BECKETT had taught him during Kanto Rocket.[break][break]

One moment passes, and he has it at the ready. Ashley's pistol fires into bodyguard's left kneecap. Superfluous man. It pains him he has to cause this level of pain, but he doesn't even bother to speak to the old bald brute. Mr. Raptis needed to see immediately that his hired help was worthless.[break][break]

Loyalty by fear is palpable.[break][break]

"Mr. Raptis?" His silver eyes are focused, as he looks for any firearms on the bodyguard to dipose the clip of, turning his head towards the goal. "Name's Sawyer. As in, saw-enough-of-yer bullshit. Your hired help looks to need medical. Don't imagine you provide insurance, do you?" He's casual with it. He can't be Theo, he knows he can't. But he can be himself, while taking what he can.[break][break]

It wasn't killing the guy, but the bodyguard wasn't his target.[break][break]

"We represent an organization your father worked with. Do you know of us? Because that'll save us a lot of time if you do." Silver eyes stared with a hint of frustration. He wanted to help the guy next to him, bleeding from his leg. Guy probably wouldn't walk again, but...[break][break]

He can't look at him, or the whole façade ends. The curtain is called. So he keeps eyes ahead at Mr. Raptis.[break]

The biggest whistle imaginable comes from Ashley, thankfully air conditioned by the ever-tiring Glaceon, the little cyan blue mammal getting sleepy as he help to cool off Shalin's back, and Ashley's front. But as soon as they got further in, Maple tries to cool them off more, as they look over the massive crater. The various powerful fire types littering the area.

"Sweet Arceus, dude..." He finds himself leaning over and nods. Yeah, this would require some hefty amounts of specialized team members. And Maple was already getting sleepy. "Ya' might need a couple ice types. Maple isn't used to this level of strain, little guy is tuckered out."

Ruffling the Glaceon's ears, they share a moment, as he turns his head up to Shalin.

"You gonna be okay going through this?"

Once finished up, Linguini and Ashley having the contraband placed about and at the ready, he ruffles Sunny's head, the little Scorbunny hopping up in sheer delight. Ashley listens to Mint as he explains the techno-babble. Essentially, a recording to hit them as hard as possible from a reputation level.

"Sheesh, sounds like you got this figured out. Kep's kind of my techno-buff." He seems more easygoing with Mint now, leaning against the truck. It occurs to him he doesn't even know the Gym Leader in question. "Who is it for, anyways?"

Aside from Wyndon Pharmaceuticals, who he assumes is a Rocket-controlled organization to make this happens, he doesn't think to ask who this was all for.

Probably unimportant. But he did like to know where his work went in the end, even if he wasn't a technology wizard.

The fabled mistletoe sits lazily there, where couple after couple find their way under to fall to its sway. Ashley wasn't about to fight against that tradition, because he knew what it held for him and Kepler. And so, just as he keeps Kepler from falling, he holds him tightly. His head is in swirls, his mind in cloud nine as he lovingly grounds the shorter guy.

He adores those reddening, blushing cheeks. He adores Kep, and he'd do anything for him. He knows, he can do everything.

"Good. I believe in you." He lets Kepler push off, making sure to be there every second to catch him if he falls, all while Maple swirls with Cloudstrike.

The Glaceon turns his head back, and has an idea, moving closer to Cloudstrike, and making the best attempt to whisper in his ear. They could really push the envelope. The Eevee-lution likes this sea lion! The idea is simple. Bubbles upwards, and freezing them to try to make little hearts in the air! It's flawless... probably!

Ashley has his hand close to Kepler's own. The small stride, the ever closer mistletoe, Ashley follows, small stride of his own effortless. "Almost there!" He continues to cheer Kep on, making sure his fingers were nearby. Letting Kep know he was right there.

Pocketing the fiver, he turns towards Eris, who wanted to sled once his arm was better, as throwing his free hand through his hair, he laughs. "I'll be fine before you know it, kiddo. Guaranteed." He was almost sure of that, so long as he didn't put any more strain on it, it would be okay.
