Now his CUFANT is certainly all gung-ho about a snowball fight, rolling one up hastily with the end of its trunk before casting it at luka chêne . Pitifully, however, the snowball only travels about a single foot before plopping back into the snow from whence it came. Regardless, the little pachyderm toots proudly.

Audric, on the other hand, is shocked he makes such a great meat-shield for Luka! The tray of hot drinks is, inevitably, dropped out of his hands, spilling into the snow as a result.

But at least he manages not to fall.

"W-War?! Is that really what this was organized for?!" He stammers, shielding his face from the near-constant barrage from Locke Jamison . Noticing that his little Cufant has taken great delight in seeing him like this, however, he huffs. "Lucy, lend me a trunk here will you?!"

After hitchhiking on a cabbage truck headed for LITTLEROOT TOWN, Audric had finally arrived to the trailhead where he was meant to meet his RANGER CAPTAIN, annalise henderson . Admittedly a little nervous, the lad stops before turning the corner to pat himself down and ensure everything is in order. Was he missing anything? Was there a piece of cabbage stuck to his coat that she'd never let him live down?

No? Okay.

First impressions were important, after all. Given the fact that he was relatively new to the RANGER CORPS, and not just some freelance WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST they employed every now and again, Audric wanted to ensure he didn't start off on the wrong foot. For moral support, however, he pauses once more to summon his HOUNDOOM, SHEBA, before advancing towards the blonde he presumed to be Ana.

"H-Hey there. My name's Audric. Audric Black. And you must be... Annalise?" He asks with a slightly uncertain smile, extending a single hand for a shake.

Though a little late to the function he had, himself, helped organize, Audric Black was only thus for a good intention: ordering some hot drinks for anyone who wished to have any. He carried four of them on a Styrofoam tray as he trudged through the snow in his boots. Beside him, a cute little CUFANT happily trotted along, wearing a little SANTA CAP on its head.

Truth be told, one of the drinks the cadet had brought was already spoken for. The name on its side read luka chêne in bright red permanent marker. Much to Audric's surprise, however, he finds her being pelted by snowballs!

"Hey, hey! One second!" He interjects, carefully placing himself between the pink-haired lass and the young man he had yet to meet (Locke Jamison ). Sure it was nothing serious, he offers a small chuckle and raises the tray of steaming drinks as if he were holding a small child. "Truce?"

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]Luka is a very modest person, that much is very clear. Overall, she seems extremely kind-hearted and brave. Most people wouldn't dare risk their lives amongst walls of flame for Pokémon. Though, admittedly, he supposed he fell in the category that did, too. And that also made him quite modest himself.[break][break]

Nevertheless, they continue their efforts well into the day until the firefighters call the job done. Audric, too, is covered in soot. He removes his gas mask and throws it into the bin where they go before washing his face with water and a paper towel. Afterwards, he regroups with Luka as his exhausted Aerodactyl waits on standby to leave.[break][break]

"It was nice working with you today, Luka." He smiles. "If we're lucky, we'll get paired up again. You're a part of the VALOR INITIATIVE, right?"[break][break]

Some fair points are made on Luka's part afterward. Audric spares a moment to reach out and carefully pet the... weird alien thing Luka sent to help him. Afterward, however, he expresses his agreement with a series of nods and hums. "Yes, I think that's a great idea. Maybe that's something we can bring up with the Valor Initiative, actually." He suggests, watching as Brandon ties up each bandit with zip ties. The rope, in the meantime, is used to corral all the Mankey for the time being.[break][break]

Brandon hums in a way that denotes skepticism in the idea. "I'm afraid it's not all that cut and dry. We've tried asking for help from the League before, and they simply haven't been able to spare the resources since we're so far out. Rather than abandon the settlement altogether, we've worked day and night to make a living here instead... and I'm afraid the miners are just as stubborn as well."[break][break]

Finished with his work, he claps the dust off his hands and turns to regard both of his juniors. "But by all means: I encourage you to try. Now go on and get. I'll have some of the townsfolk help me transport these fellas to their cells." He insists, patting both of their shoulders at the same time. "Thank you kindly, Luka. Audric." He nods, sending them off to submit their reports.[break][break]

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]The HYPNOSIS that spreads throughout the tavern does well to put the raging Mankey to sleep. Audric and his Cufant, however, are forced to take cover behind the bar to avoid its effect. Unfortunately, a few of the bandits there had the same idea.[break][break]

Just as one tries to scramble towards Audric for a punch, however, LUCY the Cufant intercepts and tackles said bandit across the room until he hits a wall (IRON HEAD). The bag the man had been carrying spills its contents all over the floor: cutlery, bottles of liquor, and packaged foods. When it's over, Audric and his partner Pokémon reemerge.[break][break]

"Awesome work, Luka..."

All of the bandits left had either been incapacitated or put to sleep. The back door left ajar, however, made it clear that a few had escaped to see another day. Audric strides towards Luka and Brandon, stepping over and briefly acknowledging the packaged food that had spilled out from the bandit's bag. "They're stealing food? Are things... this bad, for these bandits?" He asks.[break][break]

Ranger Flowers nods, setting hands on his hips as the bodies strewn out across the tavern floor snore. "This group mostly consists of former miners. But when the mines stopped yielding resources, they decided to become outcasts rather than anything else. This is the only way they know how to put food on their tables, I'm afraid." The man sighs as he pulls out a wheel of rope that was clipped to the back of his belt.[break][break]

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]Brandon had never seen an ULTRA BEAST this closely. He looks in awe when the POIPOLE emerges from its ball, then watches as it leaves to chase after Audric.[break][break]

Minutes later, after the LIFE DEW has been applied generously and he's had a moment to bend his ligament a bit, the veteran ranger pulls out his own ball and summons an impressive MUDSDALE. Swiftly mounting it, he reaches down with outstretched hand at Luka. "Need a ride, little lady?" He grins.[break][break]

Meanwhile, at the tavern, a brawl has erupted. Everything seemed to be normal when Audric walked in. It was only thanks to the investigative efforts of Luka's Poipole, however, that they came to realize the tavern owner was actually being held hostage. The entire place was under seige![break][break]

Several MANKEY cause chaos on its main floor. They bounce of walls, hang from ceiling fans, split wooden tables in two, and cast wooden chairs at Audric Black and his Cufant. Jam, too, zips around in the air as he is chased by one of the bandit apes. The actual bandits, in the meantime, pillage alcohol from behind the bar and go room-to-room in search of other valuables.[break][break]

Some backup would be nice around now!

I'm fortunate to have the both of you here today. Mighty thankful for it, too. The people here don't have much in the way of a protector— we're too far out from the big cities to receive any. I do what I can, but... I'm beginning to think they don't hold too much faith in my bum knee, haha."[break][break]

"You shouldn't be doing this alone..." Audric remarks as Luka summons a HATTERENE. "We should go scout ahead for the bandits while Luka makes sure you're okay. Only..." He looks around, acknowledging each stone-paved street that surrounded. "Any idea where I should start?"[break][break]

"Try Mattie's Tavern about a two-minute walk down Calabasa Street," Ranger Flower answers, gesturing with a nod towards the street in question, moments before he's given a soothing dose of LIFE DEW. "Tell Mattie I sent you."[break][break]

Audric nods, then turns to look at Luka before beginning to leave. "Catch up with me in a bit, yeah? I'll see you there." He smiles, his Cufant offering a cute little toot goodbye as they depart.[break][break]

Ranger Flowers, in the meantime, attempts to move his knee after the healing move has been administered. "Oh, yes... that feels much better. Absolutely worth the wet pant leg." He chuckles. When he attempts to stand up again, however, he winces for the slightest of moments. Hoping the young pink-haired lady hadn't seen it, however, he tries to change the subject.[break][break]

"Let's get going. Maybe we can still catch up with your partner there."[break][break]

Nevertheless, he still feels guilty for having had the ranger corps send them here. They were just kids, after all. At least comparatively speaking. And this?[break][break]

This was his burden to bear.

Despite the stubbornness and pride within him that yearned to send them away, however, the veteran ranger knew he wouldn't be of much use with his bum knee. So, accepting Luka's offer and regarding Audric's last statement, he reluctantly nods. "Well, I haven't received any sort of treatment or therapy for this knee since I left the hospital at Mossdeep... I'd be much obliged if any of you could do something for it. The medication I'm taking only helps so much, you see..." He adds with a hoarse chuckle.[break][break]

Audric frowns. "Of course, sir. Here, let's sit," He says, gesturing towards a stone bench placed against the khaki-colored wall of a domed dwelling.[break][break]

Brandon follows the gesture and carefully takes a seat, wincing with slight pain when he bends his knee to do so. There's a sharp exhale, followed by a deep breath as he looks up to the sky. "The sun is setting... I reckon they'll be here soon."[break][break]

Dropping to one knee and helping Brandon roll his pant leg up, Audric assesses the man's knee before turning to his partner. "You don't happen to have any healer Pokémon, do you Luka?"[break][break]

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]As a WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST, it was Audric Black 's job to conduct various types of research in the field. This included, but was most certainly not limited to: the thriving forest at PETALBURG, the scorching desert on ROUTE 111, the lava fields at the JAGGED PASS, and yes, even the hard-to-reach depths of the SEAFLOOR CAVERNS littering Hoenn's ocean floor. It was one of the latter in which he found himself in now.[break][break]

He emerged from a cave pool in complete diving gear. After taking his gear off, setting it aside for his exit later, and dressing into something warmer, however, he summons a CUFANT to help him explore the caverns ahead.[break][break]

It was time to see what kind of Pokémon lived down here, get a good measure of the population density and variety, and acquire more information about the resources at their disposal for food, nesting, and other things. Of course, catching some of them could prove to be invaluable towards research outside of the cavern as well.[break][break]

Feeling rather excited about it, actually, Audric steps forward and begins to explore the cavernous chambers and passages. But it isn't long before he literally bumps into somebody in the dark. "A-Ah, I'm sorry!"[break][break]

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]The science colony back in HOLON were as fascinated with DYNAMAX Pokémon as any Galarian or Hoennian scientist would be. The phenomenon had made waves in the scientific community for years, though Audric wasn't exactly surprised Luka didn't know much about it either. On some level, it seemed the government in GALAR had taken measures to downplay the existence of that phenomenon altogether. It certainly took some digging for any civilian to know more about it, beyond just its name.[break][break]

Just as he begins to grow bright-eyed with the prospect of explaining it all to her, however, the veteran ranger they have come to meet shows himself. He chuckles in response and nods, following along behind her with the Cufant in tow. "Sounds good to me! Mister Flowers! We're the rangers that the Valor Initiative sent over to help you! My name is Audric Black and this is luka chêne, sir." Chen-ay. He still wasn't sure he was pronouncing her last name right, and casts a gauging glance at her to see.[break][break]

"Ah, yes... nice to meet you both." The man handsomely smiles, reaching out to shake their hands in greeting. "Brandon Flowers, at your service. Or, well... I'll suppose you'll be at my mine today, considering this bad knee. It's all a bit embarrassing, I won't lie." He chuckles, reaching down to rub the aforementioned bad knee. "You've been filled in about the bandits, I trust?"[break][break]

Audric nods. "The report said you think they might strike again tonight... and that you might benefit from some medical attention, too?" He looks over to Luka, abashedly rubbing the back of his neck. "Only I didn't bring any medical equipment... or healer Pokémon."[break][break]

Thankfully, their efforts were to be continued by a larger squadron of firefighters who flew past them on PELIPPER.[break][break]

"You really saved my hide back there," The Holonite says over the sound of the whipping wind as he regards Luka with a nod. "We make a pretty good team, I think."[break][break]

Meanwhile, one of the Zigzagoon in the barrel climb up to anchor their claws on the edge of the barrel being carried. They poke their head out to view the sights from above, tongue lolling out of their mouth as the wind cleanses their fur of ash.[break][break]

The small colony here had been built around a shrine dedicated in her honour. It was a statue carved from white marble, surrounded by a fountain oasis.[break][break]

BRANDON FLOWERS, a ranger who had survived the DAWN OF THE DARKEST DAY, called this desert colony home. He had volunteered himself here to look after it, and protect the shrine from would-be thieves who wanted to harvest the marble there. The injuries he had sustained during that terrible event had left him in a weaker state than before, however. He needed help, for the thieves would regroup soon and attempt another daring heist.[break][break]

Under the VALOR INITIATIVE, rangers Audric Black and luka chêne have been assigned together once more to aid in helping Brandon. After a brief trek off ROUTE 111, the pair enter the settlement's main plaza to meet him there. Audric and his CUFANT stop at the edge of the shrine to admire its brilliance in the sunlight.
