The trail they follow eventually leads to a beautiful lake further inland. As soon as Carolina Red waddles forward for a gulp of water, however, a rather territorial MUDKIP emerges from said lake to CURSE the Appletun with a glare. But this does not dissuade said Appletun from its gulp of water.

Further enraged by this, the Mudkip emerges from the water to try and physically prevent its advance. An unstoppable object meets an immovable force before long. When she catches a whiff of the Mudkip's stench, however, Carolina belches APPLE ACID upon it by accident. Audric gasps as the poor little creature faints with utter disgust. As a mercy, the ranger pulls out an empty Pokéball and captures it.

Audric Black spends his afternoon walking his APPLETUN, a sweet little lady by the name of CAROLINA RED. The sea breeze that sweeps over ROUTE 124 is extremely pleasant. It took some effort to reach the island, but the ranger and his Pokémon and enjoyed a peaceful and pleasant picnic for it.

Unfortunately, that peace and quiet were destined to be interrupted soon. Carolina Red smelled absolutely delicious, after all. That rich and sweet fragrance tended to draw the attention of wild Pokémon anywhere they went.

Audric had come to witness the swarm phenomenon for himself and take notes for a study. It was strange to see so many POLIWRATH gathered together so densely. If one wasn't careful, they could easily get hypnotized and pass out right there!

Audric made sure to take every precaution he could. When one of them approached him rather aggressively, flexing its arms and rolling its fist as if it were MIKE TYSON, his CUFANT stepped in to protect him. Lucy's SHEER FORCE would be enough to SUPERPOWER the combatant back. As it staggered afterward, Audric would swiftly pull out a ball and attempt to capture it.

Not one to pass up on a free burger, Audric Black had been at the meeting since the start. Despite having been part of the rangers for some time now, however, this was the first big gathering he'd attended. He hardly recognized the faces and names here. But those that he did recognize put him at ease.

After sliding out the lettuce in his burger with a pinch of his fingers, the young lad hands it over to his CUFANT, who greedily snatches it with her trunk. The two nibble on their respective food for some time afterward, listening in on every ranger that speaks. It isn't until a particular announcement is made that Audric scarfs down the last of his meal.

Before making his way towards Raziel Beckett through the small crowd of people, the young man gulps water from his portable squeeze bottle and ensures his hands and mouth are clean with a napkin before tossing it away. Then, when he reaches the newly appointed Head Ranger, the Holonite grins and extends a handshake. "Congratulations, sir!"

Little more than a bow and a wave goodbye are delivered after that as Audric hurries to go find annalise henderson within the congregation. Unfortunately for him, she's stolen away by LANCE VOLLANS before he gets the chance to greet her properly. From across the room, however, she might see him wave at her and smile. Even LUCY gives a toot.

Words struggle to reach a mind that is already losing its sense of coherency. Enduring a supernaturally-induced panic attack is no fun, especially when a GALARIAN FARFETCH'D takes a swing at you with its leek. Nevertheless, Audric's Dewpider overcomes the initial shock and confusion before joining in itself, SOAKING its trainer with a splash.

Just then, the fact that this was a supernaturally-induced event at all becomes abundantly clear as a MALEVOLENT PHANTOM emerges from the shadowless biologist. It escapes into the fog with a mournful whimper, off to rejoin a swarm of others that awaited them further in. Audric, in the meantime, slowly begins to regain his composure. Dripping wet, he picks himself up off the ground and wipes at his face.

"W-What... what the hell was that..." He mutters, looking at the rest of his group.

Recalling his experience with the same vague inklings with which he could recall a dream, he shakes his head. "Sorry about all that... I kind of lost it there for a bit, didn't I?" And thought some rather unsavory things about them, though he didn't care to admit that— even if none of it was earnest. "That spirit had a grip on me, I suppose..."

Shortly thereafter, he decides he should take a little break and sip from the tea they'd offered earlier. Asking for virgil roach to kindly pass the thermos bottle over, he pours himself a cup and takes it down in one gulp before seething with disgust.

Audric watches in shock as the accompanying CUBONE whacks at his independent SHADOW to no avail. virgil roach poses a question shortly thereafter, and suddenly the HOLONITE feels his heart drop as all manner of unfortunate (and even fatal) consequences begin to flash through his mind.

What did happen if his shadow ran away? Was he stuck here forever? Did he lose something akin to his... soul? As a scientist, he desperately tries to assuage this notion with logic. Though their last encounter with wayward spirits, and a portal to a place beyond, cast that logic in a mire of FEAR and PARANOIA. He zones out for a bit as it grows.

colton fall and his GOTHITA attempt to SHADOW TAG their shadows in place next. But, curiously, Audric's shadow is the only one to slip away. He glances at the man his Pokémon suspiciously. Never mind that his shadow had been the only one exhibiting such behavior at the time. Why hadn't his Gothita captured his first? Were they all still... angry at him from before? Was he being singled out for it?

If that was the case, then...

Amelia Livy was someone he had to watch out for.

And, sure enough, she offers him a thermos of some STRANGE TEA under the guise of medicine. As the sunset seems to transition to MOONLIT NIGHT faster than normal, however, Audric shakes his head and raises his hands, and stammers a reply. "N-No thank you... I don't know how my body is going to react to that, haha... I don't like to drink... tea." A lie soaked in irrational terror.

The fact that he no longer has a shadow finally settles in afterward, and heavy panicked breathing takes over as he bends down to grab his knees. His worried Dewpider shakes at his shoulder, but Audric seems effectively disconnected.

"A-Am... am I going to die now?"

Cute and good with Sheba was a combo that flustered Audric a little bit, especially considering she was his boss. But the lad is quick to suppress that initial pang of blushing for that very reason and straightens to attention at the mission debrief instead. "R-Right! The influx of Paldean Pokémon in the region has had varying effects on the Hoennian environment! I've been studying these effects since the rifts opened, s-so you must have heard!"

His stammering of an explanation is followed by a gulp, but thankfully she breaks the silence by ushering them forward. "R-Right! Sheba, let's go." He says, clicking his tongue to summon her by his side again as they take point. Entering the forest ahead, Audric turns over his shoulder to regard Annalise for a moment as he continues. Though not before taking a deep breath to settle his nerves. Being out in the wild helped.

"Sus odifera, or Lechonk, are known to hang around ponds and creeks in order to wallow in the mud and cool themselves down. Perhaps we should head to one nearby to pick up their scent first? I don't know this particular area very well, however..." He admits.

Traveling back into the realm of THE BORDER with the same squad as before, Audric was sure to reevaluate the equipment he was bringing. Tracking tags and handheld devices used to find them are handed to each of his partners as they prepare. "I typically use these to record the migration patterns of certain Pokémon in the wild," He explains, casting a hesitant glance at Amelia Livy as he hands her one. She'd seemed quite livid the last time he'd seen her, after all.

Sensing no anger here so far, however, he continues with a smile. "This way we won't get lost if we have to split up for any reason." A DEWPIDER crawls up onto his right shoulder, casting curious glances at the devices and the people receiving them. Behind Audric, the sunset casts his shadow with sharp contrast against the stony ground...

And, when that shadow moves independently of Audric's own movement, HARO the Dewpider takes notice. The spider taps his trainer to attention with a single foot, then uses that same foot to point at the living shadow. "Ow!" The biologist winces, casting a sharp glare before following its point.

"H-Hey... is this some kind of joke?"

He remarks, hoping to draw his teammates' attention to the shadow that visibly struggles to cut itself free of him.

Audric might have experienced IMMENSE FEAR right there and then himself. How foolish of him to run forward when, more than likely, the wayward spirit of the little boy he had followed knew innately where to go. Then again, would he have found it if it had? No one knew for certain. It was still just a kid.

So, taking a deep breath and steeling himself for the task ahead, the ranger smiles. He'd been lost before in the valleys of Hoenn and the ionized canyons of Holon. He just needed to trust in himself and the clues scattered across the environment. "Let's go, kiddo..." He says, gesturing for the spirit orb to follow as they begin the hike onward.

Upon arriving on the Gimmighoul's boat, he'd noticed deciduous trees near the shore. Those tended to only grow south side of hills. Evergreens had peeked out from the mist to the north. And, just beyond that, the giant glowing portal the spirits flocked to hung near the island like the sun.

Using the signs on a solitary moss-covered tree, Audric was quick to find north. And, not long afterward, the ranger manages to find a stone ridge preceding the glowing portal. Eerie whispers are carried in the wind... upon hearing one of them, the wayward spirit he's led here suddenly bounces around with excitement. The sound of a child's laughter echoes lightly, and the ranger smiles before waving goodbye.

"Go on. Be with your family."

After a short goodbye, Audric watches as the orb disappears into the portal before reaching to his belt for a Pokéball. He summons a MILOTIC shortly thereafter and prompts her to sing out to the valley below (DISARMING VOICE). If his teammates are still lost in the mist, then hopefully they can use his Milotic's song to guide them through it.

Audric follows the GIMMIGHOUL with his team, sure to stick close as his Houndoom and the wayward spirit he's befriended tow along. Before long, they find the little imp once more. It seems to offer them passage across the misty river with its boat.

Admittedly, Audric didn't have too much experience with Ghost-type Pokémon. Most didn't factor into wildlife biology so neatly. But he had heard the reports of Paldean Pokémon crossing the rifts from his fellow rangers, and was fascinated to observe this one closer after Amelia Livy paid their due.

Realizing his Houndoom is too afraid to step on herself, he returns her to her ball before boarding himself.

"I wonder what it might be like to live here for an extended period of time... studying the effects this environment might eventually have on a living person would be amazing. Though dangerous, I'm sure: if what you say about this being the origin of underworld myths is true." He responds.

Sitting cross-legged by the Gimmighoul, Audric spends most of their peaceful ride sketching the little thing in his journal. When virgil roach gets into an argument with his little spirit friend, however, the ranger pauses to look over his shoulder. He's about to stand up and intervene when, suddenly, colton fall does so. Not long after, they reach land.

The mountainous island in front of them might have been floating... but then how had they reached it via a river? Was the river floating, too? The physics dared to give him a headache. Regardless, the mist here was so thick that it was impossible to tell what was floating and what wasn't. The only thing that stood out was a bright beacon-like doorway high above. A procession of spirits orbs headed straight for it above.

And, without warning, the one that Audric had befriended shot forward into the mist to reach it too.

"Hey, wait up!" Audric exclaims, chasing after it without another thought. "You're gonna get..." He stops not long afterward, looking at his surroundings and realizing he can see nothing but mist. "... Lost." And the wayward spirit reunites with him then, as if nothing had happened.

At luka chêne 's urging, Audric decides to forget about the spilled hot chocolate and try to enjoy the event for what it was. Ever the social butterfly, however, she leaves him to his own devices before too long. Nevertheless, at least he has Lucy here to keep him company! The time he'd spent sulking had been the time the Cufant had spent rolling up big balls of snow.

The Holonite steps in to help polish one of these big snowballs up. Before long, however, he pauses from his handiwork and observes the two with a cross of his arms and a pensive hum. "We have the top and the middle part... but now we need the butt. We need a big butt, Luce!" He urges his Cufant, receiving a joyful toot of its trunk in return.
