Nico smiled in return of Matt's good luck, not having the time to respond before cheers erupted around them and everyone was lined up. Adjusting his grip on the reigns, shifting to get more comfortable, both he and Lilypad braced for the trigger... Then suddenly, everyone in the line were off. Lilypad ran forward and easily weaved through the shallow turns, both keen on simply starting and getting into the race, each focused on the path ahead.

A variety of calls both ‘mon and human filling the air with an unbearable amount of noise pollution. Cheers from excited fans especially created a dull roar, underlying the noisy steps, stomps, and cries from nearby ride Pokemon that shuffled all around im. Standing close by Lilypad’s side, Nico could not suppress the humbled amazement he felt as fellow ride contestants loitered in the area, waiting for the race to begin. So many large Pokemon, all displaying a diversity that he had not expected. Rapidash were a fitting Pokemon to see in these events, and although the presence of these horses was unsurprising, bearing witness to the fire whipping off their backs was always special to him (one of them had been colored differently! An amazing sight). Dodrios, other Arcanines, an Onix, a Steelix!! A few times, Nico required a mental reminder to stop staring, awkwardly avoiding eye contact by quickly whipping his gaze away before anyone noticed his lingering gaze. Especially after noticing who owned the Metagross, and realizing he was staring way too much at the shiny Steelix especially.

It took quite a lot of willpower to prevent himself from staring or doing double-takes at the Pokemon Champion…

Nico held tight to one of Lilypad’s reigns, his expression stone faced and only relaxing upon settling on Matthew. The only man he knew at this place. ”Yes, definitely am … excited, sure.” He affirmed, watching the other greet and display his competitive side. This was a side Nico didn’t see too often, as their “competitions” usually devolved into showing off and flirting, far from acting like true rivals. But despite his paramour’s strong, competitive spirit, Nico remained silent, allowing a content-looking grin to linger on his face.
Although Nico really did not know anyone else, he did recognize a few acquaintances, ones that made his calm smile more genuine. Isaac Merlo received a friendly wave, pleased to see Matthew recognizing and greeting friends. Though Josh Devlin admitting his nerves allowed him to feel more at ease… Nico held back a chuckle as he was asked the same question again, ”Yes, I’m excited.” He’d reply simply and coolly. Beside him, Lilypad made an eager sound in agreement, forcing Nico to step aside, keeping her reigns slack as she bounced twice on her front hooves. ”She’s excited too.” He added, stepping closer once his goat had calmed and stopped stomping her hooves.

Expectations for this race were low, at least as far as Nico and Lilypad were concerned. She was no racer, and a Gogoats natural speed was rather low, along with absolutely no useful priority moves. They would be lucky if they weren’t last due to sheer inexperience; however, seeing other mounts that were even more unusual had set the blond at ease a little. He was indifferent to the crowds, had his chin held high, and held a soft tone as he answered his fiancé, ”I did brush her a little, but she might be looking good cause of the sunbathing we did.” He replied, smoothing down a few of Lilypads leaves as he did. ”…Pay the competition no mind, love.” Was all Nico had to say regarding Matthew’s scowl.

Hearing his own name announced caused Nico to jolt, having forgotten to expect the announcements. Grateful for Josh’s instruction, he went to mount his Gogoat, securing his foot in the holster before lifting himself to smoothly swing his leg over her back. Lilypad moved forward once she felt her rider was secure, her head held high as the other contestants were announced.

Despite Matthew's protests, the Milotic sang to announce her descent, treacherously diving head first into the water, her slender body initially lifting Nico and Matthew up, before they would be dragged down with her. "Fuck- Hang on!" Nico warned once again, hoping to feel Matthew cling tighter to him as his own arms squeezed tighter around the Milotic's neck. A world of blue assaulted both the trainer's senses, and down below, Nico was surprised to see that the ocean wasn't very deep at all. Rows of coral had built up, forming a reef that was a mere 20 feet away from the surface. They could see schools of fish passing by in the distance, assortments of different, smaller fish of varying sizes slipping through tiny cracks in the coral.

Of course, where there was coral, there would be Corsolas, which were among the wildlife populating the underwater world that Matthew and Nico were dragged into. He swore he could feel his boyfriend bristling with discontent behind him, and Nico was ready to let go if his Milotic decided to dive too far down. Their brief tour of the underwater world was interrupted when the cause of her agitation came into view. Panicked corsola were struggling to flee or fight off predators that easily preyed upon them. Mareanie were gathered in disturbing numbers- Nico could easily count more than 10 in the area!

The blond didn't know much about the ocean ecosystem... Even less about the Mareanie. But seeing so many predators feasting upon the same Pokemon didn't look natural to him. Even more so when he realized what this reef was- it was connected to Pacifilog town!!

Nico grunted, pulling at his Milotic fruitlessly as the serpent charged forward, ignoring his mute commands. Letting go of the serpent, he and Matthew floated freely as they watched the Milotic wrap her long body around one of the Mareanie's, loud, bubbly-sounding cries cutting through the water. Hurriedly, Nico swam toward the surface, aware that both he and Matthew needed a breath of air. But after gasping in his mouthful of air... Nico dove back down, determined to rejoin his Pokemon in the fray and obviously communicating to Matthew that he was sticking by his Pokemon's side in this.

LAMENTING LABS [NEN]

Nico had to admit; this admittedly-creepy lab wasn't even the strangest place that Tekka had led him to. The over-sized Umbreon always seemed to have some sort of agenda on her mind, and dragging Nico along with her was usually the first step. "You seeing something in there?" He mumbled his question in a low tone, watching as one of her ears twitched in acknowledgement. Yet the dark-type made no other response, her gaze instead fixed straight ahead as she took cautious, slow steps through the cavern. Nico let her set the pace, following a small distance behind her, his own eyes scanning the damage lining the walls until they reached an open doorway into a larger room. Nearly in-tact, if it weren't for the impossible-to-miss crater in the center. "Oh..." Nico couldn't help but vocalize at the little hole, scanning over the cracked walls, broken tiles, his gaze especially lingering at various broken machines.

This place was surprisingly large... and unnerving. Although Nico wasn't particularly afraid or even creeped out all that much, he was glad other individuals were in the area. Safety in numbers, and what not...

Lingering by the doorway, Tekka kept her eyes fixed north. While her trainer squinted through the dark to scan each nook and cranny from his spot, the umbreon instead suddenly lurched forward to trot briskly at the only closed door in the room. "You want in there?" Nico whispered, following after his Pokemon and taking care to follow her path. The only response he received was a stare, as the cautious dark-type turned and sat down, her bright eyes boring into him. After cautiously turning and pulling at the doorknob, he'd merely shake his head, "Don't think that's budging... Let's look around." Despite his suggestion, his Umbreon only continued to stare as Nico investigated the room. The others could investigate the caverns- he was more interested in seeing if a key or something had tumbled behind one of the machines somehow.

Tekka watched her trainer for only a few moments until lending a hand. Though rather than search herself, she instead began shining, her rings illuminating the room and giving Nico better access to see. After just a moment's confusion, he realized she must have used Moonlight to help him search.

"Hey, that's a good idea." Nico also seemed pleased by the idea of a nice picnic with Matthew and the Pokemon. A pleasant outing- a perfect end to their day. "Hehehe, maybe, we'll kick some gym booty."

Juvon also seemed pleased as well, cooing softly in response to Matthew's compliment as his ears wiggled delightedly.

After deciding on the meal for the evening, the small group left the apartment building behind, officially entering life on the road.

To Matthew's credit, he was adaptable and ready to go with Nico's chaos within an instant. The reliability and loyalty that everyone should love! "Great! Thank you!" Nico's face was glowing with gratitude, and so was the fellow bird-trainer.

"You two are lifesavers! The equipment's right over there- should be easy as pie to adjust it to their size!"

Matt was pulled once more to the equipment; a basket attached to several flexible straps that would securely attach to the Pokemon. "This might be fun! Bring Oto out." Nico's love for flying was starting to show.

The sight was unexpected for Nico, but absolutely delightful. Though Matt had a point... Poor Ace was in for a rough start. Tekka had always been slow to warm up to new Pokemon or people- especially when they were very interested in meeting her. "Poor guy- be nice to him, Tekka!" He pleaded, although he was unable to wipe the amused grin off his face.

Referring to their earlier days made Nico think back fondly, leaning back against Matthew so they could each get comfortable. "If this is anything like back then, these two will be love birds in no time."

Tekka had continued her avoidance. Noticing his playful approach and giving him an odd look. She showed no interest in play time, turning to continue her jog into the forest until reaching a suitably large log. Leaping atop the old wood, she settled down and began happily chewing the treat carried within her maw, only side-eying Ace in between chomps.

"Oh no... What's wrong with the poor guy...?" Nico could be found cooing over a giant Corviknight alongside another stout woman. She fussed and fretted over her partner, worry and distress clear on her face. Despite being strangers, both Nico and the woman went in circles of conversations, discussing the tired Corviknight, the taxi service, their job, the folks waiting to be carried to the other side of Foretree...

Nico wasn't sure how this happened, but the end result was him offering up his boyfriend's pokemon. "If it's just a quick trip... Maybe my boyfriend and I can fill in? We have a very large Pidgeot that would fit perfectly in the carrier. I just... need to talk to him first- I'll be right back!"
