He blinked, “Oh, uh. You want to see my stuff?” All too quickly he was wracked with sheepishness. His gaze darted toward the doorway again. “You really aren’t trying to get away? You actually want to see it?”[break][break]
Whoever this was, he was unique. Lam would give him that. His heart fluttered in his chest. Confusion mixed with a pathetic sort of hopefulness over the idea that he genuinely wanted to look at Lam’s hard work, and maybe not hate it or write it off. Maybe it was bad to not feel the sense of threat that he had when he’d first stumbled upon the intruder, but he didn’t.[break][break]
“I mean, no. I mean, yes? Er, it’s…I’m confused. You’re interesting, I’ll say that much.” His face remained reddened as he fumbled over his words. He wasn’t sure why he should be so flustered now. The immediate threat of theft was gone, but the situation remained strange and unexpected.[break][break]
It was confusing to abruptly feel a strange sense of ease around this literal stranger, while also being dubious. It was weird to want to know more. His smile was disarming in a way Lam wasn’t accustomed to experiencing.[break][break]
Rolling to his knees, he pushed himself up and rubbed the back of his neck. He didn’t really see what was so charming about himself. He felt pretty awkward just then, actually.[break][break]
Lam looked down at him, expression flatting. “Yes, obviously.” He reached down, offering a hand. “That’s not what I meant. I didn’t ask what you are, I asked who you are.”

“How’s that?” In the chaos, he’d forgotten his own disheveled state, or the fact that he was all paint-flecked. Really, it was sort of just his state of being. It was more uncommon for him to be paint-free. He didn’t really stop to consider that this random person (thief) would actually want to see what he’d been working on.[break][break]
It wasn’t anything extraordinary, anyway.[break][break]
“Well, usually when people get caught in the act of something illegal, they don’t really want to stick around for the consequences. Or chat up the person who caught them.”[break][break]
Lam didn’t understand him, in any case. He was strange. But equally as strange was the curiosity that attached itself to him. Why should he want to know anything about this intruder? He didn’t want to admit that there was a bit of veracity to his claim about mystery. “So you want me to be attracted? Interested?”
He still wasn’t sold that it wasn’t just to pull the wool over his eyes. Weirdly, he was forced to recognize that it was somehow working.[break][break]
“Special..?” His heart thumped, uneven and quick, “What’s so special about me?” He hardly thought he stood out in any way. Not like this guy, who seemed like the sort of person that drew in brightness and reflected it back like a natural spotlight.[break][break]
Lam processed the question slowly, head tilting. “Huh? Oh—“ heat bloomed in his face again and he scrambled back. “No, just…don’t try to run off. Poppy will take you out.” From a light fixture, the pidove twittered.[break][break]
Not as menacing as she thought she sounded.[break][break]
But from the way he was talking, it didn’t seem like he was really keen to go anywhere. “Who are you, anyway?” Lam had never met anyone like him.

Lam nodded, morosely accepting the potential fate. “Guess it’s a good sign at least, if it’s not a big oozing wound.” He trusted Rook’s assessment and judgment on these things more than others.[break][break]
Rook seemed eager to get him to clean off though (no idea why…) and Lam was also just as keen to rid himself of the scummy feeling that came with tumbling around outside. And obviously he wasn’t about to complain if Rook wanted to follow.[break][break]
“Fineee,” he dragged the word out on the edge of a sigh and turned the knob back a few ticks. He preferred his showers scalding, but he supposed he could survive a mellower temperature for Rook’s sake.[break][break]
It was still nice, though. The steam and heat cut through the salty grime and dull cold from the ocean. His hands ruffled through his hair to work the water through. He felt his muscles relax as the water pelted him, sore from running this way and that all day.[break][break]
“Yeah, I think so,” he replied, twisting toward the sound of Rook’s voice as he joined him. Lam pushed damp, green hair back from his forehead. “I had to retreat at first.” He frowned as he thought back to the altercation on Mossdeep’s shoreline. How Neon (mint frost) had hoisted him up with invisible force. There was a weird blank there in his head, like he was forgetting something important.[break][break]
He pushed the strange feeling away. “Felt a little cowardly to turn tail, but I dunno. It would’ve been worse if I’d stuck around, or if Virizion hadn’t showed up, or…”[break][break]
His brows rose in sudden realization. “Oh! Or the other guy that came to help. I got a picture, I’ll show you after.” “The other guy” was probably a weird way to describe Tornadus, but it was what his mind supplied for the beefy green creature. “They called a ceasefire in Sootopolis, but I’m not sure if that’s the end of it, really.”

“That’s right!” Lam chimes in with a nod of his head, grin stretching across his face. Both his psyduck and clefairy aren’t at their full evolutionary state, but that hardly meant they couldn’t hold their own. Many of his pokemon were like that—underestimated for their size. No doubt his pidove most of all.[break][break]
But Peaches, given her feistier nature for a psyduck of all pokemon, was far from innocuous. The glow of psychical energy continued to glow in her eyes. Furor as the pound in her head swelled to greater proportion. “Never forget about the little guys.”[break][break]
Backed into a corner, the underdog nearly always came out swinging.[break][break]
With King looking away, his clefairy does not make her move with swift immediacy. Clued into the support that moves between the two nidos, her pudgy hands press together—her ever-present ability flaring to life with more visible notice. The glow of a pink-tinged shield rippling around the psyduck as Kigiku launches an explosive THUNDERBOLT with a blinding brightness.[break][break]
The bolt crawls and crackles across the damp ground whip-fast. It shoots up the psyduck’s feet with a force that makes her feathers stand on end as it draws her muscles taut and locks her limbs with sudden vigor. But the little clap of the clefairy’s hands softened some of the impacted.[break][break]
Just as King backed up his companion, a FRIEND doesn’t forget to GUARD her own.[break][break]
Much it might have seemed, the outward burst of her retaliation is not to be quelled by the sudden paralysis. The culmination of build-up in her brain with aching ferocity reaches a fever pitch and Peaches squawks loud and furious as a bolt of psychic energy bursts forth from her. The unnatural psionic wave of a forceful PSYSHOCK is hurled out at the Nidoqueen.[break][break]
Blow for Blow.[break][break]
It is then that Cleo seizes her own opportunity. With the Nidoking busy lending his aid, he does not watch her and so she squares up and aims a twinkling MOONBLAST at his exposed flank.

Admittedly, Lam was more than just fine taking on a background role. Playing at the front lines wasn't his prerogative. What was important was working from the background to ensure the stray wanderings of unprepared civilians didn't result in bad outcomes.[break][break]

They'd taken up position at one of the barricades, he and Ikarus Rook. But they could only flag stragglers for so long. Virizion arced around the perimeter, vigilantly on the look out for any posed threats.[break][break]

"Ready to roll?" Lam glanced down at robin coello, a brow raising as he posed the question. Commandeering her help hadn't been that difficult. It seemed like everyone was somewhere on the stretch of road between cities. But that wasn't the only reason he'd been keen to wrangle Robin in particular. He hadn't forgotten her restlessness before the fighting broke out, the itch to do something instead of nothing.[break][break]

And though he'd said he would hold his tongue about what happened with her mother - and had meant that, it didn't mean he wasn't concerned about it, either. The outburst lingered in the back of his mind; it felt...prudent to keep an eye on her. Make sure she didn't get lost in the sauce, or something.[break][break]

The dense greenery of Petalburg Woods stretched out behind them. "I figure we can scout for anyone in a pinch, escort 'em back here to Rook if they need any patching up."[break][break]

Unclipping one of the pokeballs from his belt, Lam let the nest ball roll into his palm before he clicked the release as he gave it a lazy, underhanded lob up into the air. A twinkling glow burst from the confinement as it twisted in a backward rotational spin.[break][break]

It lacked the pizazz of the theatrics used in his gym matches, sure, but it was far more him.[break][break]

He was curious what Robin would think of the altaria that drifted out. Not his typical ace, Mallow, it was undoubtedly the one she'd given him, but Dandelion wasn't quite the same as before. A pale green, iridescent glow radiated around gold and slightly off-white feathers. The effects of a crystabloom having gifted the avian dragon with strange patterns and whorls along its body.[break][break]

His head bobbed on a long, serpentine neck - eager cooing as his eyes blinked with observant familiarity of the girl.[break][break]

Lam’s head tilted back when he laughed, “Yeah, I get what you’re saying.” The kid’s self-censorship was understandable, not wholly necessary. “I could say the same of my chatot. Some birds really revel in being a pain in the ass.” He leaned slightly toward Clover as he spoke, winking at them conspiratorially as he grinned.[break][break]
“Nah, even if he causes trouble, I’m sure he still has his merits. You big on fossil types then?” From his shoulder, Poppy watched the archen. But the pidove made no effort to go roost with him. His gaze turned back toward the oricorio. There was a simple sort of brillance to their dance—an act that could easily assist them in battle. They were clever birds, graceful and evasive.[break][break]

Lam hummed. “That's fair. But sometimes it’s the ones you like most who work and fight the hardest. Even if it’s unexpected.” He pointed at the shiny pidove, and Poppy puffed her feathered chest proudly.

He shouldn’t have been so pleased to hear the words the other spoke, because they were probably only a means of endearing him so that Lam would let him go. But he couldn’t help but be exactly that. It was nice to be praised for what he’d worked hard] on. “Er, thanks.” Briefly, his eyes darted toward the doorway to the backroom he’d been working in, where his piece was still sitting on its easel.[break][break]
No, he told himself, you are not going to get distracted by that. Instead, he was distracted by the words that fell from the boy’s mouth next. “Shouldn’t you want the opposite?” Lam’s brows pinched together. He was…confusing. It was like he was treating this as some sort of romantic comedy encounter. Like this was what was supposed to happen all along, and not flagrant thievery.[break][break]
“If you can call this acquainted…” he drawled skeptically, “I don’t even know who you are.” But of course Lam didn’t, he was breaking and entering. “For all I know, you’re just conning me right now.” His eyes narrowed, but he chewed on his bottom lip as he watched him back. “You’re the one that’s gonna go running.”[break][break]

Lam was certain that steam was beginning to pour from his ears.[break][break]
“Is this how you conduct all of your first dates..?” Again, his tone was a little too dumbstruck and earnest for the question to qualify as coy or flirtatious. Lam watched him wink, face flushed. He felt like his brain was lagging hard.[break][break]
He couldn’t keep up.[break][break]
His shoulders sagged, and he did fully pull himself up then. Inexplicably, he offered a hand down to the stranger to help him up. “If I want to keep my job, yes.” All of this could get him canned, though, he was pretty certain. “You’re lucky he fucked off early tonight.”[break][break]
Though that wasn’t exactly a new habit, either.[break][break]
And if this guy had cased the place, he probably already knew that.

“You haven’t even seen any of my art..” Why did he suddenly feel like the one who was caught in a trap? His heart thumped, ears burning as he tried to parse out what this guy was even angling for. The heat in his face made his freckles stand out, and Lam knew that. It was embarrassing, but he called Lam pretty anyway. He’d really never thought of himself as such. Maybe, like, a little above average, but he’d never…Augh.[break][break]
“Are you trying to distract me?” That would make more sense. Though Lam was already thoroughly distracted. He’d already frozen up like a deerling in the headlights because of how mesmerizing the boy’s eyes were. Stupid, he chided himself. Now wasn’t the time.[break][break]
“Huh? What do you mean?” Where was he going? Did he actually want Lam to keep pinning him down? He froze, having sat up, but still planted squarely in the other’s lap. He felt like he’d pulled a total wildcard of a deck of cards. What was he supposed to do?[break][break]
He’d expected him to put up a fight, or try to get away. But this felt totally different. Not that he’d completely ruled out the idea that the guy might’ve just been trying to trick him into letting him go. Use his charms so that Lam might allow him to just waltz right out.[break][break]
“What do you want me to do?” the question was out of his mouth faster than he could process it. It wasn’t intended to be suggestive, though. More that, there was something in the thief’s tone that was almost expectant in its curiosity.[break][break]
Lam wasn’t sure what he was playing at.[break][break]
“I need…to hang that back up.” His glance strayed to the canvas on the floor.

Lam’s mouth fell open and disbelief and he scoffed. “No, I don’t deserve it!” His expression turned sullen at the betrayal. “Not all the time, anyway. Maybe 10%,” he added in a mutter. robin coello could never know. The petulant demeanor fell away, though, and Lam’s smile returned–unable to withstand the effects of Rook’s enthusiasm. “Yeah, she’s pretty cool, I guess.” In the arena of holding fondness for pokemon generally found unappealing or scary, the two definitely held common ground.[break][break]
So, like, where were all the bird fanatics??[break][break]
He refrained from the urge to flinch away from the alcohol being used to clean out his scrapes. In all honesty, he was a bit of a wimp about it, but it really wasn’t as bad as he might’ve acted. Lam didn’t care for the concern he caught flickering in Rook’s stare as he concentrated, though, so he bit down on it. There was little use in making the other more worried than he needed to be.[break][break]
But Lam was learning his limits, and that was a good thing. He’d stopped pushing himself past the brink because of how distressed it made Rook. And amazingly, he’d started to feel more secure in exercising judgment. Confident, even, in knowing himself and when it was wise to fall back. Almost like it was common sense, but his anxiety didn’t always allow for what was obvious.[break][break]
It was sort of crazy how someone as theatrical as Rook was at times made Lam more pragmatic.[break][break]
(Granted, he was a little more dramatic too as a result, but not when things were serious.)[break][break]
He didn’t consider Rook to be cowardly, though. Even if he’d not been at Sootopolis. It was something if he’d gone out in the potentially dangerous weather, just to check on the gym. And helped people while he was at it. Nor was Lam quick to forget how he’d pushed him out of the way of that metal pokemon’s blast last winter. All at his own expense. Whatever insufficiency Rook might’ve found in himself, Lam didn’t see.[break][break]
“Okay, I believe you..” Lam sighed. He meant it, but he needed to see the damage done with his own eyes too. All that work… he shook his head. Rook was right, he didn’t need to worry about it yet. “Good.” His voice was somewhat smug, pleased that Rook didn’t deflect. “Most people wouldn’t go near the beach with the tide high like that.”[break][break]
As someone who grew up on the ocean…he would know.[break][break]
“I hope not. Stitches always itch.” But he could agree to the plan laid out. And he very obviously perked as Rook’s shirt slipped up over his head. His brows rose. “Yessir.” Solemnly, he gave his partner a little salute and hopped down from his perch to duck into the shower–pausing to give him another playful peck on the lips in the process.
