She loves ghosts, so that might be some common ground.”[break][break] Lam rolled his eyes. “Sure, sure. You’re a slowking,” he backtracked sarcastically. He was glad that there was relative peace in the moment. It would’ve been much easier if he hadn’t been so involved. Even he wished that he could be as lazy as he’d once been. But that was the strangeness of nostalgia. He wasn’t sure if he could go back to the complacency he’d lived his life with before he’d met Rook.[break][break] Sitting as patiently as he could manage without fidgeting, he let Rook check him over. Lifting his arms when needed, and tilting his head back as his partner searched for cuts and bruises. He hadn’t even realized there was a knick over his brow until Rook stuck antiseptic on it. His nose wrinkled, and he hissed at the tiny sting.[break][break] The one on his arm hurt much more, but Lam ground down the urge to complain. Half-heartedly trying to peel off his socks with his toes instead. “No,” he sighed, “don’t suppose you can. Though I imagine some people are pretty good at burying their head in the sand.” Forcing themselves to act as if nothing was wrong. He liked Rook cared enough to help, even if it looked different from Lam’s own efforts. That didn’t diminish it in Lam’s eyes.[break][break] Looking up, he formed a square with his fingers, lining them up with Rook in the frame like he was taking a picture before he made a click sound and mimed pressing his finger down. An unspoken indicator that he was committing the image of Rook at work to memory for future reference.[break][break] He perked at the suggestion, and visibly deflated at Rook’s correction before he could agree. “Tomorrow…” he echoed reluctantly, a morose air falling over him briefly. “At least the water stopped rising…” And it had mostly stopped raining. Still, he didn’t like the feeling of stress that crept up at the idea of all the damage. But it wasn’t like they could stop it from happening tonight versus in the morning. “You think it’ll be okay?”[break][break] There wouldn’t have been any preventing it even if he’d stayed home that day. It was easy to feel like he’d failed in some way, though.[break][break] Lam snorted quietly, tilting in to press a kiss against Rook’s forehead as his hand brushed up the hair flopped there. “Nah, I’m not talking about me. Let me compliment you, will ya?”[break][break] Steam filled the bathroom, slowly fogging up the mirror above the sink as water pattered steadily in the background. It was a comfortable sort of warm. Much more preferable than the cold ocean water he’d been dunked in earlier. Lam leaned against Rook’s chest and stifled a yawn. Tension gone, he felt limp and heavy, cozily settled there for whatever other checkup Rook carried out.[break][break] He lifted the arm with the deep cut and shook it like a noodle. “You think this’ll need stitches?
