The first time he wakes, in the darkness of his living room to the blue light of the tv screen in power-saver mode and the incessant buzz of the new message, all while sprawled on the couch—game controller fallen out of hand, Lam is far too disoriented to give much thought to the riddle that pops up. Bleary eyed, he stares at it tosses his phone down on the coffee table. Frankly, it takes all of his willpower to make it from point A of the living room to point B of his actual bed before passing out again after shuffling his partner back over to his own side of the bed.[break][break]

He’ll figure it out in the morning. (Something that of course doesn’t happen once the message erases itself.) Though the internet sleuths of Hoenn pose interesting theories that are way bigger-brained than he’d ever work out on his own—he can’t argue. It’s all sorts compelling.[break][break]

When the passes over and he wakes again, it is not to the light in his bedroom, or the coziness of his duvet (annoying.) The brightly lit room and it’s snubbull enthroned do well to sour his mood instantly, as do the unidentifiable avatars that sprout up around him. embody him, he notes with a cursory look at himself. It’s too early for this, for the question that pops up in front of him in blinking font, posturing a query he is simply too groggy to truly think much upon.[break][break]

He has half a mind to say yes, get me the heck outta here. It’s far less cozy than his mundanely domestic dreaming had been. Yes, it was cool and all going down an internet rabbit hole of theories and typed out debates on higher meaning but, like, sleep, man.[break][break]

His finger slips and he selects [NO.][break][break]

So much for that. But hey, he can back out any time— the game said so. Might as well hang out for a little bit.[break][break]

He sighed, head tucking into the crook of Rook’s neck. “I have a good feeling, though.” Things weren't the same as they once had been, and he had more than a few good years under his belt as gym leader. It felt like some things had settled.[break][break]
Constant risks didn’t manifest as quickly. It didn’t feel like there was a need to rise higher than he was at a faster rate. Actually able to take his time.[break][break]

He wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize what they’d built together, nothing was that worth it. But something told him that it would be alright.[break][break]
By the time he woke the next morning, he felt that much more at ease about the decision itself, and when he left his family behind for the morning, there wasn’t any hesitation or uncertainty between the two of them—not beyond what was normal, anyway.[break][break]

“C’mon Peaches, let’s go check this out.” His suggestion is met with reluctant psy yais from the Psyduck as she waddles behind Lam at a slower pace. Lam snorts as they make their way through the aisles. “What, you not into the Luigi’s Mansion vibes?”[break][break]

She is not amused.[break][break]

But it can’t be helped— they’re Lilycove residents, and so to the infiltrated store they go once the reports of spooky electronics start rolling in. At the moment, he hasn’t seen anything. Not until a blender practically launches itself off the shelf at them. Peaches squawks, and works herself into a tizzy—scrambling behind Lam’s legs as he also startles at the abrupt moment. The blender rolls across the ground, motor whirring until a rotom pops free in hunt of a new piece of equipment to inhabit.[break][break]

Lam almost misses the chance to toss a ball at it altogether, but chucks it before it can dive into a toaster.

Laughter didn't seem to come frequently for her, he silently observed. It felt like the sound slipped loose despite her effort to keep it contained. He couldn't help but grin that the silly name had managed to cause such a reaction. "Isn't it? Somehow it works." Maybe because he was so rolypoly and squishable. He waved a head, though, at her concern. "Oh, nah. Maybe if he was sort of serious. But my guy here is a goof. I don't think that'll change as he gets big."[break][break]
He reached over to ruffle the rowlet's feathers. "Right, Artie?" The question earned little hoots of agreement. As she spoke of her time in the military, he felt his posture straighten up inherently. "I can imagine," he murmured, considering the discipline it must've required. Nope, not for him. The easy breeze and laidback nature of the Alola he spoke of would always be more his speed. "Not a penny!" he laughed. "But I'll always give a good word." It was home, after all.[break][break]
And it was much less spontaneous and unexpected than Hoenn and this weird, crystallized snake. Lumi lifted her wings to shield from the spray of SEED BOMBS. the xatu retaliated with a cutting AIR SLASH, though the arbok seemed barely deterred. Lam glanced at his newfound companion. "I'm wondering if we should make a tactical retreat right about now.."

Between the two of them, this shouldn't be too bad, right? That's his thought, anyway. The fact that it's cropped up so close to the city doesn't sit well with Lam, so he probably would've gone with or without Matias alongside him.[break][break]

Maybe he'd be in the same rudderless job. Spinning his wheels and getting nowhere with his painting. Unappreciated and stagnant. This new potential seems brighter, at least.[break][break]

He hums in contemplation, brows furrowing. "It'd be nice...I'll have to consider it. We took a trip to Sinnoh not long again, though, so..." [attr="class","text"] Compared to his own familiarity with the city, he'd definitely consider her a local. Even if the salazzle navigated the streets more keenly. That didn't mean Aria was any less of a more established resident in his book. But he also wasn't about to jump into a debate if she protested.[break][break]
Instead, Lam grinned broadly at her response. "I'd like that! It'd be nice to, y'know, catch up more too." Like, beyond catching her by total surprise at work or whatever. The guilty thought needled him then that maybe he was keeping her from some important task or another. But the store seemed quiet at the moment, and she appeared unbothered... so Lam let it lie for the time being. Let the comfort of nostalgia linger like the cadence of the old melodies she used to play for him on the violin.[break][break]
He leaned against the counter, now on the other side of it, arms folding comfortably. "Hm, I don't know about that," he replied with a laugh, "just that I figured I'd always have somewhere new to go." Big city life, as it turned out, wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. "Why's that?" As far as he was aware, she didn't have any sort of disdain for the ocean, sandy shores, and peaceful setting.[break][break]
The insinuation made him laugh more, though, and he scoffed in mock offense. "What! Because I'm that much of a geek, huh?" Granted, he had been one. Still was, really. Albeit it bit more socially outgoing now.

The heat waves works as intended, the swelter rippling outward in a heavy roll. Bagel Bite only pants happily, tongue lolling, unbothered by the uptick in temperature. It quickly becomes her problem, though, when Lam's pidove is ignored in favor of both opponents targeting the pooch.[break][break]
Double-teamed, she tries to lunge away from the U-TURN, only to run straight into the RAGE FIST thrown by the annihilape with a startled yelp.[break][break]
As she retreats, the dachsbun whimpers - extra-pitiful like. Wide, chocolatey BABY-DOLL EYES blink imploringly at the enraged annihilape. The picture perfect image of a sad, pitiful little pup. Even if it's mostly all an act.[break][break]
"I see whatcha meant by that now!" Lam taps his temple again. "Pops, time to come down!" They'd deal with the flamigo first then, got it. They could deal with that nasty punch the annihilape's packing afterward.[break][break]
The pidove trills at the instruction, and then swoops down from the top of the cage. For something so small, it cuts a strange image to see the bird charge up with draconic energy as she dive straight for the flamigo to dole out the smack of a DRAGON HAMMER.

Still, her response drew a sharp bark of laughter from the gym leader. "Can't say I was trying to be nuanced," he answered with a shrug. "Those are all hypotheticals." Granted, she had a point. But he wasn't there to hash out an endless list of what ifs. That was like asking his anxieties to run wild and wreak havoc in his mind.[break][break]
Because the truth of the matter was that Lam didn't really want to be out there fighting either. But, well, he had a responsibility, didn't he? He glanced back over his shoulder at the cave mouth as her unown shimmered with a new, dark energy. "If that's the case, then you already I can't let you do that." He shrugged at the woman. "Nothing personal, you know - for nuance's sake."[break][break]
As he spoke, tone shifting to something lighter, he snapped his fingers. The Slither Wing didn't make a play for the Iron Jugulis as might've been expected. Instead, the behemoth surged forward to make a FIRST IMPRESSION on the newly-teratralized dark unown instead. The murkrow, having returned to the perch of Lam's shoulder, stared at the paradox pokemon across the way with glinting eyes - the shadows of NIGHT SHADE conjuring dark imagery to inflict upon the Iron Jugulis.

It seemed not, as the hatterene soon toppled on her own.[break][break]
Peaches, however, struggled to keep up. She collided with the cackling sableye, only to be met with the same hefty headbutt. Knocked off her feet with a squawk, the psyduck faceplanted in the sand as Lam's toxitricity sent another poorly-aimed GUNK SHOT at the sableye in an attempt to cover her.[break][break]
"Ah, Peaches!" His own distress echoed that of the other trainer's. Lam skidded forward and slid to his knees, gathering up the unconscious psyduck rather than collect her into a pokeball. It made the fracture in his arm throb with a nauseating pain as it was jostled, but he ignored it as he pulled her up into his lap with the other hand.

The tumble of the skeledirge comes a bit unexpectedly, but at an opportune time. As the flash of the corviknight's wings signal his retreat from the unconscious beast, the durability of his mega evolution fades under the duress of battle. then, the corvid is as normal as he ever was, and he lifts Lam back up into the air so that they can collect the accompanying talonflame and carry forward again.[break][break]
The gym leader squints hard as they go - looking for any sign of whoever is commanding their visible opponents, but his search turns up nothing. And is soon deterred entirely as the intensified buzzing of the beedrill drowns out other sound. All too quickly, he assesses the fact that Ziti is struggling to keep up with the bothersome bug.[break][break]
His talonflame shrieks angrily as she races the clock to reduce the webbing to ash around her. "Fall back!" he calls to the bird of prey as they surge forward to cover her once it becomes clear that the beedrill is ramping up to a greater stage.[break][break]
As Lam watches, the bite of the hornet's stinger lands, even as the binding snaps loose around the talonflame finally in a flurry of flame that bursts around her again. (FLARE BLITZ).[break][break]
Her only saving grace was the backward jerk of her body as she tried to pull the force of her flight away. Impaled, but not fatally so, thankfully. Felled in a heap of rusty feathers and slow oozing crimson. [break][break]
Hastily, Lam ushers the corviknight to drop low so that he could recall the other bird to her pokeball before she was stuck through again with more lethality.

It really did feel like ages ago. Now the world around them was imploding in other new and exciting ways! Sarcasm, of course. It's a relief, though, to know that they both seem perfectly capable of handling things - and Lam is just relieved to not be left to his own devices.[break][break]
"Sounds good," he replies as he moves to switch on his own comms device. A lopsided, joking smile flits across his mouth. "Leaving out the drowning bit, obviously."[break][break]
The roar cuts through their chatter and Lam can't help the grimace that follows. There is something awe-inspiring about the sheer size of the Roaring Moon, though, and he openly gawks at it as it surges forward on powerful wings. "Damn."[break][break]
He'd prefer this to be a race before it ever becomes a fight, that's for sure. So he slips onto his pidgeot's back again with little protest. "No time like the present, I gather!" he chirps down at Remy before pointing at the bird. "I figure this might be a little quieter than that giant catching our footsteps."[break][break]
Once Remy is good to go, Lam wastes no time plunging forward ahead until they're both engulfed by the pink fog.
