“Aw dude, you make it sound like I’m goin’ away forever,” he says with a laugh. One hand waves casually, “I’ll still be around.” Maybe not in Rustboro, but still. It wasn’t like he was gonna stop hanging out with Cian, or anything.[break][break]
“It’s been great, though. It’s really helped me figure things out.”

Despite his efforts to knock the presumed rocket off course, Lam didn’t have any actual desire to cause her grievous harm. And he definitely didn’t intend to kill her or anything. The MOONBLAST landed true and sent the pair into a tailspin, but he prompted Mallow to stay her offensive. A frown flit across his face as he heard the woman cry out as they rocketed toward the ground beneath the heavy layer of pink mist.[break][break]
“Hold up,” he instructed the altaria and she cooed as their own steep descent tilted and leveled off. They still dropped into the Interdream Mist, skimming along the top fringes of the swirling, pink cloud. Squinting, he tries to see if he could make the woman and her salamence out among the foliage and grass beneath. “Wherever they landed, they must be fine, right?”[break][break]
The dragon cooed beneath him, but he wasn’t so soothed. They sank lower at a slower, more cautious pace. Less to further the attack, but to scan for signs of life where the impact of the large beast had echoed. He drifted until he thought he saw the familiar red blaze of her hair, obscured by a tint of pink and lilac, alongside the hulking blue form of the salamence. It looked like it was out cold, and she was upright.[break][break]
It was all he needed to confirm.[break][break]
With a nudge, Mallow began to rise straight upward again as he disengaged. She was grounded and prevented from whatever she’d been up to, so he considered his job done. They continued ascending until they broke into the air above once again, and he pushed his goggles back.[break][break]
Hands open for his pidove to drop her haphazardly drawn map into. It looked incomplete, whatever she’d been doing—though it looked like a rough estimate of their bases. Folding it up, he tucked the map into the inner pocket of his coat and continued scouting. It was up to her now to make it out of the mist and back to her side unscathed.

This didn’t seem to be a turn Elisabeth Fiorelli had anticipated.[break][break]
A laugh slipped free, bright and entertained, as his eyebrows rose in feigned surprise. “I’m not? Well I’ll be damned.” It was heavy on sarcasm, of course. Maybe he wasn’t the most poetic or superfluous, but Lam didn’t consider himself particularly stupid, either.[break][break]
Not that she had seemed to agree. But he was more than happy to prove her wrong as much as needed.[break][break]
It wasn’t fun to be intimidated by a bunch of tiny birds, was it? “I look forward to it,” he chimed back as she signaled her retreat—his bravado no more than a whistle in the dark despite the fact that he was, yes, obviously feeling a bit smug. “But I’ll be sure to stay up here in that case.”[break][break]
And then he puffed out a breath as she winked away, a hand pushing through his hair as hidden nerves eased off of his shoulders.[break][break]
After checking over each of the five pidove, he recalled all but Pops. She rested atop his head in usual fashion as Ladin tread air and then set forward at an easy pace. Meanwhile, Lam tuned into his communicator.[break][break]
“Logan reporting in— infiltration on the eastern side confirmed to be Underboss Fiorelli. Opposition has fled the area via teleportation, location now unknown. Keep your eyes peeled. Over.”[break][break]
With a sigh, he pulled the pidove down from the nest she made of his hair and tucked her against his body as he spurred his flygon to finish the lap he’d begun with his unfeazant. “We’ll get the lot of you all rested up at base after this, sound good?”[break][break]
The chirped agreement was confirmation enough.

[attr="class","text"] Unfazed by the woman’s efforts to dislodge him, the lone pidove continued his offense on her hair. (Make of that as you will, hehe.) Eventually, he broke free with a small burst of wind that sought to ruffle her further as he tore away (GUST.)[break][break]
The laugh the attack evoked from the gym leader as she cursed and scrambled to rid herself of the pest was only a short-lived entertainment, however.[break][break]
Lam’s initial intent had been to send the pidove hurtling toward the butterfree to cause further disruption. But as the naganadel closed in, sharp gusts of air slashing at the little bird with furious effort, it was time to change tack. The attack sent her reeling all topsy turvy in the open air, the shrill chitter of pain following, but it was nothing she’d never endured before.[break][break]
“Go for gold, Pops!” he called out to her and the blue pidove righted herself in the air before rocketing skyward, in an attempt to continue the dragon’s attention on her. “Meteoric Mini Missile, now!”[break][break]
Flipping around, Pops tipped into an abrupt dive. Long awakened to the effects of the passho berry, additional energy coalesced around her feathered body—toughening her, making her look just a teensy bit more imposing and durable as she hurtled down like a bullet aimed directly for the naganadel’s bulbous abdomen for impact.[break][break]

Bracing for the wave it might create through the air, Lam held tight to the flygon and the remaining, slumbering pidoves. He couldn’t help but fix his attention on the underboss, though. “Fiorelli! How’s that for molting pigeons, huh?”

He had to hand it to her—her commitment to the bit was pretty impressive. He didn’t buy it, and had made that pretty obvious, but she persisted. Even going so far to make a show of letting her map slip away, which earned a raised brow from Lam.[break][break]
His attention did indeed fall to the map as it fluttered from her hands. He didn’t exactly fall for the obvious ruse, but at the same time, he considered diving for it. Not because he wanted to assist the woman, but more because it seemed like a useful thing to get his hands on. If he did that, it meant she wouldn’t have access to it, or could try to come back for it later if she could find the paper tangled in the foliage below.[break][break]
The hesitation was all the time she needed to attempt an escape though. As he looked down, his altaria gave a warning trill, and he looked back over to see her FLY with a sudden burst of speed. “Shit!” he blurted, scrambling to spur her on. “Pops! You go grab that paper!” he directed the pidove that had been roosting on the altaria’s back. She chirped and tucked into a dive like a tiny, feather missile as she chased the piece of paper.[break][break]
Lam, however, took off after the woman gone renegade. Squinting against the wind, his hand rose to thumb over the keystone of his goggles and soon he and Mallow were engulfed in the light of mega evolution as he sought to kick up an extra burst of speed. “Give them something to dodge! Maybe that’ll trip ‘em up,” he coaxed the avian dragon. Swathed in more cloudy plumage, Mallow sailed through the air after the salamence as it ascended.[break][break]
The sudden dive was echoed in the gym leader and his mount, the force of the movement causing a jolt similar to that of a roller coaster’s, but it wasn’t anything they’d never managed before. The sparkling pink beam of a MOONBLAST from the altaria stretched across the distance between fleer and pursuer.[break][break]
The idea of dropping straight into the cloud of interdream mist was undesirable, but he wasn’t about to ease off the gas now.

[attr="class","text"] Lam waved down Alexei as Mallow drifted down from the tall warehouse roof. “Not much! Just checkin’ if anything needs touch up!” And also he kinda just liked being up high, y’know? He figured if there was anyone who understood that particular sentiment, it was likely Alex.[break][break]
Once they touched down, he slid off the altaria’s back in one quick, fluid motion. Sure to give her some affectionate scritches under the beak before making his way over to the other gym leader.[break][break]
“Yep! Should be opening up the doors soon, if things keep going smoothly!” he chimed in response, a wide smile taking over his expression. “You already got the birds down pat,” he mused with a bright laugh, “so I’m sticking to the strategy format I enjoy most–doubles!”[break][break]
It was a useful tool, he believed. Both on one’s own, and when accompanied with others. “Thanks for swinging by, by the way.” A comfort– to be greeted so warmly by the most seasoned gym leader around.

He can sense that Cian will not budge, though he doesn’t really understand why he’s so insistent about it. In return, he gives the other a playful nudge with his elbow.[break][break]

And he definitely doesn’t want to take advantage of that.
