It had been a long time since she'd ridden her Tropius anywhere.[break][break]

The last time its leafy wings had ascended her into the skies, a brewing storm had broken out over Sea Mauville, one that heralded the creation of a Pokemon she'd never encountered in this world.[break][break]

This time, as Elisabeth soared into the heavens for reconnaissance, she spared a glance at the resurfaced island below with suspicion and wondering. It will draw the League here, she knew, and with that knowing came a thrilling excitement and fear at what that would inevitably mean.[break][break]

He would be here, too. And she would get to finish what she started.[break][break]

Caught up in her preparations as she was, she didn't take into account the shadow that had descended behind her, not until the sound of wingbeats caused her to turn around in surprise at her ambush.[break][break]

Pidoves had been dispatched for this reason. They split from his side and fanned in different direction. A particularly keen one DETECTED a presence different from its kin, and fluttered back to shift Lam in the direction of an unfamiliar tropius.[break][break]
“Bingo,” he pinpointed the shape coming into view ahead. “Pick it up, Saff, we got company.” The unfeazant squalled, wings beating faster to push them through the air.[break][break]
Lam juggled his hold on the bird, fingers lifting to radio in. “Oppositional target sighted on the eastern side. Engaging now.”[break][break]
A whistle drew one of his scattered pidove back. One by one, the others would draw back to him—trained to follow the sharp, echoing sound. But Poppy hadn’t drifted far from Lam to begin with.[break][break]
As his impromptu target turned, Lam waved with the same hand he’d used to make his report. “Heyo!” he chirped, bright like the birds he commanded. “Fancy seeing ya up here.” A cheerful warning.[break][break]
Not quite close enough, though, to make out the unmistakable features of Elisabeth Fiorelli just yet.

"Tch," she clicked her tongue, the feathery down of Pidove revealing the flock that had her surrounded. "Spies. How irritating."[break][break]

The sky taunted her with its empty, rootless expanse of clouds. Nature wouldn't reach her this far into the heavens, and without ground beneath her feet, she found herself on a frustratingly level playing field.[break][break]

Time to play to old habits, then.[break][break]

A BUTTERFREE emerged from her Pokeball, the very same one that kyle lopez had thought marked her a more harmless Rocket in the Ultra Deep Sea. It flitted to her Tropius's side, wings beating faster and faster until a HURRICANE manifested to buffet the offending Flying-types and their trainer away. Her Tropius's WHIRLWIND compounded its wind, amplifying the storm to new heights.[break][break]

"You don't own the heavens," she spit at her nameless opponent, "but should I knock you to the ground, I'm more than capable of making this earth your hell."[break][break]

Type disadvantage be damned.

[attr="class","text"] It wasn’t until he was closer that he was able to better identify his newfound opponent. His brows rose in mild surprise though it was quickly covered up by playful bravado. League reports were enough to clue him in about who Elisabeth Fiorelli was, but he’d never met her in the flesh before.[break][break]
Kinda intimidating, sure, but what was she doing up here?[break][break]
“Sooooo,” he drawled as a hand rose to rub at his chin in a show of put upon thought, “what you’re saying is so long as I keep you up here, it’s smooth sailing!” The same hand shifted to a cheerful thumbs up. “Got it!”[break][break]
Green eyes followed the emergence of the butterfree, head tilting curiously at the choice. Not exactly a strong choice against birds, but then again, he knew better than to underestimate anything with wings. Something only confirmed by the brewing windstorm created by joint efforts. A sharp whistle sent his flock of pidove scattering out of reach as they were blown back by the gales.[break][break]
“Awfully flowery talk, though!” His unfeazant drew him higher up on sturdy wings, but it wasn’t the larger fowl who was the true threat. Lam’s arms folded and rested on the bird’s head as he peered down at the underboss. “You do Shakespeare in your down time?”[break][break]
It was then that Poppy shot forward from underneath, beak opening to unleash a sweltering HEAT WAVE at tropius and butterfree alike before peeling away like a tiny dart. From his vantage, he commanded the unfeazant to twist halfway to kick up a TAILWIND to fan the flames.

"I seem to be known for flowery things," she said bitterly, thinking of the moniker of 'the florist' that kyle lopez and MATIAS SILPH had both dubbed her with. Not exactly the most compelling terrorist handle; Viper hadn't really caught on, unfortunately. "Just as you have a reputation of being yet another Gym Leader who thinks training the pathetic civilians of Hoenn makes you some sort of hero, destined to save them."[break][break]

Though talk was cheap, and actions proved what monologues couldn't.[break][break]

The ambush of lam logan's HEAT WAVE scorched the air, blazing with sizzling heat as Elisabeth Tropius tried to evade it moments too late. Alas, the TAILWIND ensured the attack would hit, and hit critically. The lumbering Grass-type cried out in pain as it weathered the blow in full, protecting its trainer from the impact while it clearly swayed and struggled to maintain itself airborne.[break][break]

A valiant LEAF STORM cut futilely towards the hoard of enemy Pokemon, lashing out before the Tropius succumbed to its own inevitable, fatal descent. Elisabeth shut her eyes, aware that her mount would perish -- but also, aware that she would not perish with it.[break][break]

As gravity demanded the giant's fall, her Butterfree sprung into action at the beckon of the MEGA STONE that the woman wore on the brooch of her Rocket uniform. Enormous gossamer wings stretched across the skyline to impressive width, and when the Underboss fell from her perch, this newfound titan among Bug-types caught her. An ELECTROWEB barrier sparked to life, protecting them both against the incoming Pidove and Unfeazant.[break][break]

Hatred burned in her eyes as she heard the heavy sound of her Tropius's fall.[break][break]

"Aerial arts seem your specialty," Elisabeth spit, her anger at being bested in this manner swirling beneath the surface of her eerily calm words. "Allow me to introduce mine."[break][break]

No Bug-type nor Grass-type entered the fray this time, but rather the dreadful figure of a NAGANADEL that loomed over the field with piercing intent. At the enemies' eventual approach, a SLUDGE WAVE would be spewed forth, its hideous miasma seeking to swallow the avian Pokemon whole.

[attr="class","text"] “Maybe you should take up poetry,” he offered, nose wrinkling. “I’ll even pre-order a first edition.” Dimly, he recalled other bits of her report, and prior reputation. “Do you believe in flower power too, then?” One of hands lifted in that universal peace symbol. “Maybe you should give peace a chance!”[break][break]
It was all playful banter that shored him up against any wariness he felt. Up here in the air, he didn’t feel cornered in the expansive, shadowy dark of the deep sea. Up here, he was safe from being tangled and restrained by the Rocket who had let her gardevoir devour his quaquaval.[break][break]
For a moment, though, that playfulness slipped away as sharp words darted back at him with cutting intent. Lam frowned, the green of his eyes narrowing to pine dark slivers. A derisive bark of laughter followed. “Civilians have no place in this,” he spit back. Many of those who came through the doors of his gym were no more than children. He’d never claim to thrust them into actual combat. Others came to his mind—friends, his gentle-hearted boyfriend. None of this was to be a hero. [break][break]
He wasn’t a hero. “Neither does destiny.” This was about avoiding inevitable change. Keeping everything together so that any superficial cracks in the surface of his life didn’t split wide into unpassable fissures. He couldn’t crumble to pieces this time, he couldn’t afford to.[break][break]
Poppy twittered as the weak pulse of a LEAF STORM attempted to bat her away. But his attention fell upon the tropius as it easily succumbed to the attack. As the butterfree caught its trainer, he expected the familiar red beam of light to shoot out and gather the lumbering creature before impact.[break][break]
But she chose safety and surety. Did she truly trust anything? Including her own team?[break][break]
“Ooooh, Naganadel—nice choice!” He flashed a thumbs up, though his smile was more of a grimace at the price she paid. The echoing thud and crack lifted to them, and Lam winced. He felt for the poor creature, regardless of how loyal it had been. It was clear that it was a dependability that didn’t extend both ways. [break][break]
Saffron pulled upward as the SLUDGE WAVE spewed outward at them. The shift shielded Lam from the attack as the unfeazant took the brunt of the powerful onslaught in the belly. The toxin worked fast, engulfing the bird’s system, and it wasn’t long before he was sinking in the air rapidly.[break][break]
In order to relieve the unfeazant of his weight, Lam let two pokeballs roll into hand—one in each. Then he whistled to Poppy before tipping backward and allowed himself to freefall for a few precious seconds. “Match its type!”[break][break]
In the small window afforded them, the shiny pidove surged forward to distract them. Though her primary focus was the underboss with her butterfree, she busied herself with the ultra beast. Swinging forward, the little bird took on a much larger opponent.[break][break]
Unexpectedly, draconic energy plumed around the pidove as she charged the naganadel, swinging her entire weight in the DRAGON HAMMER aimed at the beast’s thorax.[break][break]
Meanwhile, Lam recalled the unfeazant before he could plummet out of sight through the clouds. Though he descended at the same time, he tapped the release on the second pokeball and thumped heavily onto the back of a large flygon.[break][break]
If he’d fallen out of sight, he soon rose back up to meet Elisabeth Fiorelli. It was a calculated risk, letting himself drop. But, though a painful landing, his trust had been paid off. “See? Entirely avoidable. Ladon, ahead.”[break][break]
The flygon wasted no time, soundwaves rippling around him as he let out a shrill cry that ripped outward toward the mega butterfree and its trainer. The BOOMBURST crashing through the air and swallowing up the wind and silence of their elevated height.

The Gym Leader's theatrics earned nothing but an eyeroll from the underboss, unimpressed and unaffected by the implications of her own ineptitude in the sky.[break][break]

Better to ensure survival than to weigh another's higher than my own, she'd privately reasoned, and that reasoning had kept her alive in a world that often seemed determined to kill her. Death was unfortunate, but so long as the death wasn't her own, it was acceptable.[break][break]

The Tropius would be one of many Pokemon to die for her today, she suspected. It hadn't been the first of hers to do so, and it wouldn't the last.[break][break]

"You admire dragons, and yet you play with molting pigeons?" she observed, only for the DRAGON HAMMER to launch towards her Naganadel with a furious strength that soundly silenced her mockery. The dragon roared in agony, a DRAGON PULSE radiating out from it in a rippling draconic aura seeking to blast its assailant away.[break][break]

But a sudden BOOMBURST soon swallowed all of Elisabeth's attention.[break][break]

Her Butterfree's compound eyes took in the Flygon's speed and shape, wings beating into a frenzy, before it zipped in a TELEPORT out of the direct line of fire. One of Elisabeth's oldest Pokemon, its attention was primarily focused upon protecting its trainer first and foremost -- playing support, while the Naganadel took on the role of aggressor.[break][break]

"I find many things in this world are unavoidable," she said from behind lam logan, close enough to strike. "Destiny most of all."[break][break]

A BEFUDDLE from the MEGA-EVOLVED BUTTERFREE prepared to dust all of Lam's Pokemon in a soporific SLEEP POWDER.

[attr="class","text"] “Dragons are nice and all,” he gave a Ladon a pat as if to emphasize the point, “but I think it unwise to underestimate these lil fellas!” The DRAGON PULSE did indeed blast Poppy back, but rather than continue to attack, she retreated to where her trainer waited—opting to use the allying dragon as a ROOST while she smoothed out her feathers.[break][break]
Now it was his turn to roll his eyes, though he didn’t fall for the bait and turn back toward her. “And my destiny is to be crushed under your heel, yada yada, I’m sure,” he replied dryly as Ladon’s wings beat furiously, as the dragon pushed the soundwaves out with aggressive force, switching focus away from the butterfree. Barreling toward the naganadel in an aimed DRAGON RUSH, it put her dragon between them.[break][break]
And what a lucky call that turned out to be.[break][break]
Dusted in the butterfree’s SLEEP POWDER a few of the pidove drift, suddenly drowsy with sleep. As Poppy lit on the top of Ladon’s head, the flygon zipped away and dropped lower so that Lam could catch the falling birds. It was only then that he shifted his mount to face her again.[break][break]
Only one of his normal flock evaded the incoming attack. A keen DETECT carrying the little bird out of harm’s way— but that didn’t mean he intended to be useless. While the other pidove were caught to nest in the slope of the flygon’s neck where Lam sat, this one darted away with blustery twittering.[break][break]
“The other thing is—pigeons are just so charming!” Lam chimed as he watched that one pidove on his own while the other three slept. “And persistent!” Emboldened, the pidove dove from above, tiny talons aiming to tangle in Elisabeth Fiorelli’s with furious little yanks and pulls.[break][break]
Lam cupped a hand around his mouth, “Consider yourself grateful he didn’t use other methods of retaliation!” After all, no one really likes getting hit on the head with bird shit, do they? “You foresee that in your destiny?”[break][break]
For a moment, his attention turned to his primary pidove, who continued her ROOST. “You almost ready to rock, Pops?” Her dark blue wings fluttered as she issued angry, determined coos with fresh revitalization.[break][break]
It was only a matter of choosing where to lock in.

Just as she planned to attack from behind, an unexpected pest meddled with her plans.[break][break]

"Ngh...!" An undignified shriek ripped out as the Pidove's talons tore through her long black hair. "Putain de ravageur," she cursed loudly in Kalosian, the Mega-Butterfree attempting to evade it with TELEPORT maneuvers that, unfortunately, just seemed to drag the lone Pidove with them. [attr="class","text"] Unfazed by the woman’s efforts to dislodge him, the lone pidove continued his offense on her hair. (Make of that as you will, hehe.) Eventually, he broke free with a small burst of wind that sought to ruffle her further as he tore away (GUST.)[break][break]
The laugh the attack evoked from the gym leader as she cursed and scrambled to rid herself of the pest was only a short-lived entertainment, however.[break][break]
Lam’s initial intent had been to send the pidove hurtling toward the butterfree to cause further disruption. But as the naganadel closed in, sharp gusts of air slashing at the little bird with furious effort, it was time to change tack. The attack sent her reeling all topsy turvy in the open air, the shrill chitter of pain following, but it was nothing she’d never endured before.[break][break]
“Go for gold, Pops!” he called out to her and the blue pidove righted herself in the air before rocketing skyward, in an attempt to continue the dragon’s attention on her. “Meteoric Mini Missile, now!”[break][break]
Flipping around, Pops tipped into an abrupt dive. Long awakened to the effects of the passho berry, additional energy coalesced around her feathered body—toughening her, making her look just a teensy bit more imposing and durable as she hurtled down like a bullet aimed directly for the naganadel’s bulbous abdomen for impact.[break][break]

METEORIC MINI MISSILE: the pokemon gathers z-energy to forge a plumage-like shell around it before colliding with its target with detonation level impact.

Bracing for the wave it might create through the air, Lam held tight to the flygon and the remaining, slumbering pidoves. He couldn’t help but fix his attention on the underboss, though. “Fiorelli! How’s that for molting pigeons, huh?”

And so David felled Goliath, one well-timed missile sending her Ultra Beast roaring with agony as it tumbled back, somersaulting mid-air. The avian pests had begun to wake, and the ones that Elisabeth had already found herself entangled with -- literally -- were doing far more damage than she wanted to admit to.[break][break]

"You're not as bird-brained as I thought," she conceded as she withdrew her reeling Naganadel, only for a molting feather to find itself delicately landing on her head. Thankfully it was just a feather.[break][break]

Yet as the rousing Pidoves started to assemble, Elisabeth acutely felt her advantages shrinking and shrinking the longer she stayed mid-air. The sky was far from her chosen domain; she felt adrift here, away from the earth itself.[break][break]

"Another time, then, Gym Leader. On land, you'll find I'm far less generous with my enemies."[break][break]

When she TELEPORTED this time, she disappeared entirely, retreating far from this place and its pesky Pidove army.

This didn’t seem to be a turn Elisabeth Fiorelli had anticipated.[break][break]
A laugh slipped free, bright and entertained, as his eyebrows rose in feigned surprise. “I’m not? Well I’ll be damned.” It was heavy on sarcasm, of course. Maybe he wasn’t the most poetic or superfluous, but Lam didn’t consider himself particularly stupid, either.[break][break]
Not that she had seemed to agree. But he was more than happy to prove her wrong as much as needed.[break][break]
It wasn’t fun to be intimidated by a bunch of tiny birds, was it? “I look forward to it,” he chimed back as she signaled her retreat—his bravado no more than a whistle in the dark despite the fact that he was, yes, obviously feeling a bit smug. “But I’ll be sure to stay up here in that case.”[break][break]
And then he puffed out a breath as she winked away, a hand pushing through his hair as hidden nerves eased off of his shoulders.[break][break]
After checking over each of the five pidove, he recalled all but Pops. She rested atop his head in usual fashion as Ladin tread air and then set forward at an easy pace. Meanwhile, Lam tuned into his communicator.[break][break]
“Logan reporting in— infiltration on the eastern side confirmed to be Underboss Fiorelli. Opposition has fled the area via teleportation, location now unknown. Keep your eyes peeled. Over.”[break][break]
With a sigh, he pulled the pidove down from the nest she made of his hair and tucked her against his body as he spurred his flygon to finish the lap he’d begun with his unfeazant. “We’ll get the lot of you all rested up at base after this, sound good?”[break][break]
The chirped agreement was confirmation enough.
