Gas rose in the misty air, warm and noxious as it thickened the space with poisonous fumes. Lam’s hand rose, yanking at the collar of his jacket up over his nose. His other hand fumbled with the pokeball that sucked his shinx back in—out of harm’s immediate way.[break][break]

“Oh. Love that for us,” he replied dryly to Robin’s explanation, voice muffled by fabric. Obviously, there was no running for it now, when they were meant to collect the spirit. Whatever had changed within Victini now, it sure was pissed.[break][break]

His eyes stung, and they swiveled upward, seeking out where Tornadus had drifted in the fog, partially obscured by the thickness of it.[break][break]

It mixed with the swelter of victini’s overheating, mist warming into vapor steam and toxic fumes. “Got any way to get that thing some juice?” he calls over to Illenana at the mention of it possibly needing z-energy to awaken.[break][break]

But the head scientist seemed to be focused elsewhere. No sooner does he ask than the lot of them are hoisted upward. Weightless and suspended like a set of puppets on strings. A surprised noise slips free, and his collar falls away from his nose and mouth as they are pushed toward clearer air. It’s strange to lack any sort of gravitational pull, but Lam heeds her warning. Twisting in the air, though, his hands hook around the curl of Tornadus’ tail.[break][break]

“While it’s distracted!” he blurts out, pointing down toward the angry spirit as it ticks closer to detonation—all of that blast locked onto the target that Illeana has made of herself. The Stormbringer obliges—furious yellow eyes narrow on Victini and the umbral swirl of a DARK PULSE fires down at the fiery sprite.

If they’d spoken of it aloud, Rook would have found that Lam had been much the same. He’d trained some as a kid, sure, but by the time he’d made it to Hoenn, he hadn’t been all that in the loop. He hadn’t tried. And when he’d taken the position, he hadn’t known that gym leaders had started to have more expected of them.[break][break]
But he was trying to thread that needle more wisely now.[break][break]
His smile was a weak one, but no less genuine. “Honestly, me too, sometimes.” He let out a quiet laugh, “I’d be too much like my dad though.” Well, maybe not in terms of personality, but still. It would’ve felt maybe at least a little less dire.[break][break]
Lam shook his head, “Well, yeah. But don’t you think I’d feel the same way if it was reversed?” His fingers carded through the wet strands of Rook’s hair. “That selfishness is important. It reminds me to not lose my head.” He tapped at his own temple, “You stay up here, the whole time. I don’t want to miss out on the rest of forever because I was a little too reckless.”[break][break]
He’d seen how pushing himself into recklessness out of obligation had hurt Rook the last time around. He wouldn’t be so quick to do so again.[break][break]
Maybe. If you think so.[break][break]
Lam’s brows pinched together, incredulously so. “What? Of course I think so. I think you’ll be better at it than me, even.” It felt a bit daunting to say as much. To infer it as a future actuality rather than a suggestion, but he meant it. No matter what Rook was thinking in that head of his to protest the idea, he was confident.[break][break]
“The best sort of dad. You keep saying you’re selfish, but I also know how much you care.”[break][break]
Maybe not for other people, but when it came to Pokémon? To the life they’d built? It was obvious. And if they had kids, they’d only be a part of that too.[break][break]
Reaching back, Lam snapped the faucet to off, but his hands were quick to return to Rook’s sides. A steadying force. “Well…” his fingers tickled at water slick skin. “My idea is that we get all bundled up in bed, obviously.” Careful not to slip, he leaned past Rook to snag one of the towels hanging on the rack. He reached up and dropped it over his partner’s head, rubbing at his hair.[break][break]
“Snuggle up, do some kissin’. Maybe put on that show you’ve been trying to get me to watch?” He’d even try to stay awake through it—at least for a little while. “How’s that sound?”

Whatever complications lay under the surface, Lam remained wholly unaware of them. Perhaps if he thought hard enough, he could make guesses that when he said marital bliss it wasn’t always so perfect. If he was working off of experience, he would know it definitely wasn’t the case. After all, he had his own mishaps and disagreements with Rook. Usually pertaining to the more dangerous situations he had begun to find himself in on behalf of the league.[break][break]
But that was neither here nor there, and he’d learned to start taking fewer drastic risks. Retreating when it was smart to do so, for the sake of returning home safely. Idly, he wondered if these two had a similar understanding between one another. Lam wasn’t inclined to ask, however–he wasn’t there to seek any sort of advice, and they weren’t there to give it.[break][break]
“That’s what I like to hear!” he called back merrily as Aubre affirmed her readiness. His head tilted as her partner replied in a language that he himself wasn’t privy to. “Aw, only sweet nothings, I hope.”[break][break]
Lam’s eyes fell to the two pokemon set forward as each sprang to the ready.[break][break]
No verbal communication followed, but that was no matter. The oricorio had fallen for the delay, and let out a squawk of surprise as the heliolisk changed tack once it had nearly reached the flygon. Yuzu attempted to skitter out of the way to little success–the swing of its tail slapped into him and sent him tumbling back, poms at the ends of his wings in a flurry.[break][break]
Ladon was also forced to endure in the wake of the rush–the empoleon coming up from behind the lizard’s attack with one of its own. Ice crawled over the flygon’s scales, and the chill set in, but his wings beat rapidly in an attempt to fight off the cold. They hummed audibly as the speed increased, and it looked as if he might launch into the air to keep out of reach.[break][break]
“Yuzu, help keep Ladon grounded!” Lam called out in spite of the display, and this was the only cue the pair needed. As the oricorio righted himself, he rallied up all of the motivation he could muster. He danced around the flygon, poms waving and rustling together as he lent a HELPING HAND to Ladon’s strength.[break][break]
The flygon, meanwhile, let the beat of his wings slow only for a moment as he turned to square up against both opponents. And then they began to beat harder, faster. The thrum of them sending tremors through his powerful body to the ground beneath until an EARTHQUAKE ripped outward across the pitch. Yuzu, of course, continued to twirl about–unaffected by the quake, and only incorporating the tipsy movement into his dance.[break][break]
Lam had asked if they were ready to rumble, after all.

He had wondered when they might catch on to Cleo’s little trick. Naturally, it’s only a matter of one domino falling before the rest drop in quick succession. The fluff of Cleo’s pink body ruffles up as she gives a little shake. The sparkle of LIFE DEW cast outward toward Peaches before it shimmers around herself.[break][break]
But it is simply not enough.[break][break]
The onslaught of both poison attacks proves too much for the clefairy to resist any longer. With a dramatic cry, she pitches backward–both of her tiny arms pinwheeling in an attempt to prolong her protection for just a moment longer.[break][break]
“Good effort, Cleo,” Lam calls with a sigh, recalling the clefairy as the green tips of her ears twitch and then still as she slips into unconsciousness. The pale aura that had radiated from the psyduck fades with her lack of attentiveness.[break][break]
Peaches watches as both of the nidos turn on her companion. Electricity continues to stagnate her movements. The lingering shocks still causing her muscles to seize up. The psyduck lets out a tittering grumble of psy yais as her narrowed gaze shifts from King to Kiki. With the FRIEND GUARD faltering and failing around her, she is left prone–so it becomes necessary to work as quickly as she can.[break][break]
No matter how stymied she is.[break][break]
If there was one thing Cleo managed with her time before they wised up and tag-teamed her, though, it was whittling away at the Nidoking. Little sparks of electricity zing off of her feathers as the static makes them rise–fluffed up and comedic looking despite the indignant air she continues to carry herself with as she awkwardly shuffles to turn toward King.[break][break]
The well of her type draws from deep within her, and the psyduck’s bill opens with a haughty cry–the HYDRO PUMP an attempt to blast a torrent of water at her target.[break][break]
Attempt being the key word.

A sour look crossed Lam’s expression as the question was skirted around again. “You don’t look like you’re in that much of a disguise to me.” Unless he had some very good, lifelike prosthetics on his face right then, he wasn’t all that convince that wearing all black was disguised. But fine, maybe he’d play along. “What’s your alias, then?”[break][break]
His eyes rolled. There was no way he was going to use it against him, but why did he care so much about who this guy even was? Just because he’d peppered in a few coy remarks and called Lam pretty? If that’s all it took, maybe he needed to date around more.[break][break]
It was odd, though, that he actually agreed to see what Lam was working for. Again, he couldn’t sort out what the angle was here. Why he was bothering with the fanfare of sticking around when Lam had made it clear he wasn’t going call the attempted robbery in.[break][break]
He still wasn’t too pleased with the piece that rested on its easel—presented openly for the two of them to view. He wasn’t sure what it lacked yet. The cityscape with plantlife growing up through the cracks like some dystopian landscape. It wasn’t the sort of hyper-realistic landscape work that he saw in a lot of the galleries he wandered through, but it was his own…unique brand of it, he supposed. Odd colors, something punchy to the brushstrokes.[break][break]
But always softer when it came to the birds.[break][break]
In this particular case, swablu and altaria that drifted in the skyline like fat, fluffy clouds tinged fluorescent shades by the light pollution of the neon in the city beneath it.[break][break]
His mouth opened to say that it wasn’t right yet, or that it really wasn’t all that good, but Rook beat him to it. That time, when his face flushed, it wasn’t out of the absurdity of the situation or the other’s efforts to keep him tripped up. It was mingled sheepishness and pleasure. He was pleased to receive positive feedback.[brerak][break]
Even if, honestly, Rook could still be bullshitting him despite saying otherwise.[break][break]
“You think so?” was what fell out instead, the corners of his mouth trying to twitch into a smile despite his effort to remain unaffected by this weird, flirtatious man who’d more or less waltzed in here. “I mean, I’m not sure about that, but it’s nice of you to say.” What he should have said was that he agreed—that the current installation was bogus. A lame appeal to a new minimalist movement that held what felt like little actual effort.[break][break]
He was too busy soaking up the compliment to do so, though.

as he speaks, it isn't without an immediate, but slight, pang of regret as the stranger startles. as he turns, lam smiles apologetically. a hand rises, carding through the bright, messy green of his hair. "my bad - wasnt' sure what the best way to announce myself.." he laughs, and the sound is sheepish. maybe a little self-effacing.[break][break]
after all, it might've been worse if he'd said nothing at all and was simply there at the next turn like many of the ghosts that also came here to roost.[break][break]
he can't say he recognizes hum, but what lam does know is another bird enthusiast when he sees one. "i hear that, though. usually the only sorts i find up here are the feathered variety."[break][break]
his eyes fix on the camera for a fleeting moment, then jump back to the other's face. "lam logan," he replies easily, shifting the bag on his shoulder a bit as his posture slouches in relaxation. he's off duty so he leaves out the formality of his title within the league.[break][break]
it's nice to not be immediately recognized sometimes, even if not for long. he gives a slight nod to the disappeared camera. "any good shots up here today?" for all lam knows, though, nick isn't here for the birds despite his assumption. maybe it's for the killer view and panoramic angles.

He expels a breath as the tattered quaquaval crumples under the force of Tornadus' hit. With haunt out of view, the clutch of fear around his heart eases and his shoulders relax slightly. His guard remains risen, though, as his eyes sweep through the fog for any return of things he'd rather forget. "Why would they seek us out intentionally?" he asks Robin. But actually, he's not sure he wants the answer to that question.[break][break]

Similarly, the other shadowy copies dissipate, but they are not given much reprieve to regather their bearings, are they? Maybe they were in the right place, as had mentioned earlier, or maybe the disruption summoned the vengeful spirit right to them.[break][break]

Victini's spirit flares with heat and flame. Fiery shades that stand out with sharp contrast to the bleakness of the border's sky. A blaze through the mist as the V crashes down over them. Marshadow's efforts are valiant, but near futile under the sheer force of the attack.[break][break]

Lam ducks behind the barrier that erects, but Tornadus follows the 's gallade as it rises to the challenge. "Yep! Easy peasy." Or so he says, anyway. Another question rises as he spies the glow of what he assumes is the shard contained within Victini's body. "Was it this strong last time you fought it, Rob?"[break][break]

A chill seeps in as the air stirs around Tornadus. It amplifies the already dreary mood that permeates the terrain of the border, as the winds whip up into gales at the cyclone pokemon's behest. A BLEAKWIND STORM is the sort of weather that suits the space they inhabit - opening up a crater of hollowness in the chest. A cold that crawls down through the bones and into the pit of the soul.[break][break]

But even as the currents rip outward from Tornadus' presence with wide berth, the force behind the attack is channeled more toward victini's spirit where it burns bright. flame that flickers in the wind, but refuses to be put out.

[attr="class","text"] Finally! They made it through without getting bounced back to the start of the obstacle. He threw both fists in the air and let out a woop, though the sound was winded from the running. Swaying on his feet, Lam squinted up at the icy platform—his previously enthusiastic, hazy grin beginning to morph into a grimace the longer he stared. Somewhere he could hear calling out to him in encouragement, but he couldn’t spy the pink waterfall of her long hair.[break][break]

“Uhhh haha, yeah—I’m… right behind ya.”[break][break]

The ice seemed to ripple out ahead of him, reflecting prismatic light as he took a tentative step. “What if I sink..” he said to the decidueye as he inched and slid at the strange, upward angle. Before him, the floes looked like a whole ocean, and he was just a drop in the bucket—ready to slip below the surface as soon as the cool surface melted and cracked through.[break][break]

Behind him, Artichoke hooted and gave him a nudge—away from one of the bright squares that would have assuredly given him trouble. “Okay, yeah…if we run…across it as fast as we can, we won’t fall through! Genius!” The decidueye cast a LIGHT SCREEN around his trainer, earning another cheer as Lam took off at a sprint. The light encased him—and surely it would keep him afloat and buoyant, all the way up!

- decidueye uses light screen to ‘shield’ lam. Lam, meanwhile, thinks all the ice has melted and he will fall in if he doesn’t run fast enough. Lol.[break]
