As the sprigatito welcomed Robin’s attention and proceeded to make biscuits on her lap, Lam gave her a wounded look. “Okay, as a vegetarian, I’m literally obligated to be ‘pro-eat your veggies’. But just because I don’t commit crimes on the regular doesn’t make a goody two shoes.” In his mind, the term was reserved for the sorts of people who acted sanctimoniously about their morals and personal stances. To a fault. So maybe he sounded a little defensively riled up, but it wasn’t true anger or irritation.[break][break]
Maybe more the dismayed wondering of whether or not Robin really placed him in the same camp as those sorts of individuals.[break][break]
“Like, when my mom left, I was pretty angry. Maybe I didn’t act out as much as my little brother, because he had a harder time with it, but,” he shrugged. “Sure, okay. Nothing too rebellious.” He sighed, head lolling toward her as he flopped back in his seat. “But I’m not usually prone to outbursts either.” Any anger he felt, he kept in a tight little ball in his chest and then compartmentalized the hell out of it. And in any case, he was more prone to anxiety instead. Self-blame.[break][break]
Y’know, all that fun stuff.[break][break]
“But my point was more that this wouldn’t be the first time I haven’t turned someone over to PD, or reported something. I met my fiancé when he was trying to rob my boss.” Lam shrugged again. Noodle, sensing the attention that Clove was receiving with that unnatural feline intuition, pattered out into the living room. His little legs stretched luxuriously, and then the shinx scrabbled up to Lam’s lap for the same treatment.[break][break]
He didn’t mention the prior fall, and the rockets he’d let flee on the Mirage Island. Didn’t mention his conversation with The Visionary (Naomi Sato), and how a lot of those people stood on precarious, tired footing just the same as he did. He hadn’t reported them, either, in the end.[break][break]
Nothing was all that black and white to Lam, not really.[break][break]
But then Robin laughed and it felt like maybe some of the tension lingering in her began to shift and loosen. Lam smiled, relief filtering into his expression. “I’m literally not even thirty yet,” he pointed out flatly. “Ollie better not, he’s supposed to be my bro.” His arms folded smugly, “So that means I’ll still be superior rank, and instead of inspections, you’ll get to help me clean out the wingull roosts on the beach.” His smile widened, “For the environment. A ranger’s favorite cause.”[break][break]
If she actually asked him, though, he’d probably let her drag him to a “haunted house”, or whatever. Maybe.

“Yeah…maybe?” Lam shrugged, “I mean, I don’t know that for sure, but none of my other pokemon reacted to it the same way. So maybe there’s a connection. It’s a nice thought, anyway.” Or just an overly sentimental one that he himself was applying to the situation. It seemed right, though, so he wanted to believe that it was that act of giving that allowed Dandelion to be affected by the crystabloom’s infinity energy. “I sure didn’t do anything special, myself, though.”[break][break]
All Lam had done was let the altaria out in his backyard to stretch his wings.[break][break]
He puffed out a breath, and then dissolved into laughter at her disgust. “Glad we see eye to eye. They’re on the beach all the time, so it’s easy to almost step on them if you’re not paying attention in the shallows.” He grimaced. It was a way to make light conversation while they worked, he supposed. Above them, the altaria glimmered and circled them. As if he could protect them with his brightness alone.[break][break]
“Ha!” His head tipped back. “You know, formidable as Grey is…I buy it.” Lam gassed her up easily despite her tendency toward heckling him. Unaware as he was of the seed he’d planted in her mind back during their trip to Dewford, he didn’t think twice about how it might swell her ego.[break][break]
In any case, he believed it. He was certain Robin would dig her heels in and refuse to let up against the Elite Four member. “Don’t tell him I said that, though,” he added after a prolonged pause.[break][break]
His attention remained ahead of them as he scouted for anyone that might have been displaced and needing assistance–oblivious to the idea that trouble would come from underfoot.[break][break]
Starling as Robin stumbled, he tried to snag her by the arm, but was a beat too late. “You okay?” The impulse would have been to call her clumsy, if not for the dugtrio. Lam whistled, pulling Dandelion back toward the area. “Look for anything else!” He called up to the altaria. Or anyone, maybe he should’ve said.[break][break]
Dandelion’s wings drummed against the air, and then he seemed to glow even brighter before a wide SPOTLIGHT haloed the area. It swept back and forth in search, looking to lock anything else within that beam.[break][break]
“You think so?” he asked, looking down at the trapped dugtrio warily. He offered Robin a steadying head, but she’d already risen back to her feet. “You cool?” In asking again, he meant her ankle, of course, but there was no telling if she would interpret it differently.[break][break]
as they looked down at it, the dugtrio's red eyes flashed with warning and the earth began to rumble ominously with earth power.[break][break]
"that can't be good." Spoken seconds before he was uprooted.

Maybe it was a bit unfair to ask Rook to be his voice of reason right then. Out of his element, his partner was likely feeling more like a fish out of water than Lam was in the moment. But of course he replied with sound logic. The obvious, something Lam already knew, but couldn’t seem to talk himself into seeing the purpose in. Slowly, he nodded. “Right, yes. Yeah. You’re right, of course you are.”[break][break]
With his free hand he pushed a hand through his hair and let out a heavy breath. “Never a bad thing. We might come across some people that need a hand too. Sorry, I don’t know why I’m so unnerved.” Maybe it was the unnatural quiet that had stretched out along the route like a long, held breath.[break][break]
He smiled, but even then it didn’t quite reach his eyes. All the same, he let Rook lead him in the direction they’d been headed. From the skies, Poppy drifted back down and kept a pace just ahead of them–confirming they’d been positioned the right way to land at the marked base.[break][break]
An ominous rumble echoed around them, preceding the patter of rain as it began to fall at an increasingly steady rate. But it wasn’t the abrupt shift in weather that drew him short. Or even the fierce crackle of an electric terrain bursting to life around them.[break][break]
“You gave yourself away pretty quickly, didn’t you?” he called back to her, head tilting for a moment. Her willingness to announce herself was a little too fast, if he thought about it for long. Clearly armed, and unafraid of them. She likely assumed herself in the better position. When it came to weaponry, she would be right. [break][break]
Lam shifted just ahead of Rook with little thought, though let out a scoff of laughter. “Right? It’s almost like they could win a medal for most unhinged in one group.” He didn’t remark upon the nagging thought in the back of his head that there were some in the league that could rival some of the most feral of the Rocket roster.[break][break]
“Pops, clear some of this up.” The pidove, who had fluttered back to his shoulder, rose up through the rainfall again. For such a small bird, she conjured a great enough wind–the air stirred and gusted against the electricity that surged over the ground as she DEFOGGED the area.[break][break]
“Keep your eyes peeled,” he murmured lower to Rook, glancing back only for a moment because he doesn’t dare look away from the woman for long. “There might be more, either hiding or on their way.” His hand shifted to one of the pokeballs on his belt, the gleam of it fresh from its newness. He hadn’t expected Tornadus to accept the contraption, let alone a nest ball, and yet he had. Willingly so.[break][break]
The green and gold gleam of it matched the cyclone pokemon as he burst free of confinement. Arms folded, Tornadus sized up the zeraora at her side with a scrutinizing eye. “Think your niceties could use some polishing, if I’m being honest.” Quietly, his hand had reached back to find Rook’s–giving it a short, hard squeeze.

“Kinda is better than not at all!” His eyes skirt sideways toward her, but quickly return to the battle. The mixture of gas and flame do the trick–further added by the trubbish’s input. A brow lifts at the favorable reaction his garbodor draws. Clearly this is also the means to win him points with his impromptu battle partner.[break][break]
The power of judith’s poison gas makes his eyes water, and Lam yanks his shirt collar up over his nose as the Rockets go scrambling. As the air clears (literally), Virizion surges forward with graceful leaps and bounds–ensuring that the trouble will not come back their way, but Lam turns back to the girl as she cheers on the poison-types’ effectiveness.[break][break]
“It’s all about using the right combo when it presents itself,” he remarks brightly, only to laugh when Virizion circles back toward them with what can only be described as the most repulsed of expressions on their face. The creature’s short snout is wrinkled up, lip curled as they swing their head side to side. As if they will be able to dispel the lingering stench that way.[break][break]
“Sorry, sorry,” he amends to the sword of justice, hands extending to smooth over the flat plane of their head. Virizion, placated by the apology, ducks their head serenely to accept the affection they have grown to appreciate from Lam. There is a certain degree of respect there that was forged atop Mt. Chimney, but time has allowed it to warp into a certain degree of fondness too.[break][break]
They are proud and austere, but not too proud and austere to receive his praise and attention.[break][break]
“Your little guy is holding out well, though, looks like.” Lam nods at the ralts that wavers in place. Virizion’s head raises serenely to full height again as they turn curious eyes on both Cass and the ralts. One by one, though they pin that stare on the small pokemon for a beat longer.[break][break]
He shrugs, “Yeah, you’re probably right. Judy must’ve eaten something foul recently. Or it was just the fighting spirit, right Jude?” He nudges the garbodor as she lumbers back toward him–clearly ready to go back to a nap that he might have disturbed her from, no matter how fierce she came out swinging.[break][break]
“Yeah, no problem,” he adds as he smiles at her, offering a hand to shake. “I wouldn’t be the double battle gym leader if I didn’t double battle now and then.” Lam laughs, and finally he grants Judith her reprieve. She disappears back into her ball. Once the direct source of the smell is gone, his pidove returns to the top of his head, fluttering down on little wings.[break][break]
“Yep! I was out looking for stragglers when I found the lot of you. You were holding your own pretty well, even without my help.” Part of Lam considers suggesting that she shouldn’t be out here on her own. But considering how she was talking to those Rockets, he reconsiders and opts to give her the props instead. After all, he can respect that sort of spirited determination - no matter how young a person is. He jerks a thumb back over his shoulder. “I should probably head back that way. You wanna help?”

Okay, the obvious answer is following after robin coello to keep her out of too much trouble (though it’s debatable how successful he actually is when it comes to that,) but like– what is he doing out here?[break][break]
The murky gloom of the Border rises up around them with the oppressive force of something sinister and slow-creeping. It gives Lam the shivers, if he were to be frank–which he isn’t, because naturally he’s going to save face.[break][break]

He’s wearier than Althus Rex–someone he’s never met, who practically lights up the eerie pallor of their surroundings by sheer enthusiasm alone. He’s got that headstrong bravado Lam recognizes in the particularly feisty trainers that wander through his gym doors.[break][break]

Anyway, the togepi that toddles next to him is cute. It reminds him of when his togekiss was that little. Egg resides snugly in her pokeball at his hip. It is his shinx that takes the charge ahead of him, yellow and lavender fur casting a luminescent glow as he bats at the togepi. Mischievously attempting to knock the baby pokemon over to see if it will roll like a ball.[break][break]
“Noodle,” he warns before stooping to scoop the kitten up fluidly as they continue walking. He doesn’t break stride–almost like he’s done this countless times, because well, obviously he has. Noodle mrrps in surprise, but lets Lam carry him.[break][break]
Admittedly, he doesn’t actually know all that much about Victini and the remnants of its soul, or the Soul Dew. Only what he’s already told Robin, which he got–in passing–from Caleb Harcourt in the first place. “What the hell are soul marchers…” he mutters, green eyes squinting as if whatever they are will materialize out of the mist from mere mention alone.[break][break]
His consolation is that the magical leaf imparted by Virizion rests safely in his coat pocket, as always. And above them, Tornadus drifts along watchfully. The bottom of his rolling cloud only just visible through the rising fog. It’s a reassurance that he can play muscle, or support. And that’s what he’s there for.[break][break]
There’s little point in worrying about having the knowledge to back everything up. That’s what illeana reyes’s here for. His glance skitters to the orb in her hand. “So does it just…suck the wisp in?” His mind conjures the vacuum-like thing they used in that one movie. With the ghosts.

Lam stands by the mailbox, letter unfolded in his hands. Atop his head, the wide orange eyes of his pidove blinks down at the pages. Poppy hops down to his shoulder and pecks at the corner with a tiny beak.[break][break]

Waving her off, he wanders back to the house as she flutters off in a chirping huff. There is both an exhilaration and a sudden weight that drops over his shoulders as the reality of the offer sinks in. for a moment, his brows crinkle with concern. though this is something he had been aware of and turning over in his head (no small thanks to Greyson Connors for the budding idea,) how many more responsibilities can he stack on a pile that might threaten to teeter at any moment?[break][break]

But as he brandishes the letter and presents it to Ikarus Rook, the smile on his face returns. it grows wide and goofy, and maybe a bit proud.[break][break]

(though if he's being honest, he feels a sneaking suspicion this has to do with the fact that virizion's magical leaf continues to reside in his pocket, and tornadus likes to linger in his backyard.)[break][break]

Not that it makes much difference when it comes to the choice itself. His place is in Lilycove, Lam knows that much. In the wake of Kyogre's rampage, the city remains on the mend. But if acceptance provides him the information and channels necessary to keep the city safe from there on out, and allows him to speak up on lilycove's behalf, then it's a no brainer.

lam chewed his lip uncertainly as they pressed onward further down the path that made up route 102. "maybe we should've found a base further back..." his brows pinched together as she shot rook an uncertain glance.[break][break]

it was a calculated risk - attempting to find one of the abandoned bases scattered about that was closer to petalburg itself. but the gain of being able to assist civilian's caught in the crosshairs was important. it was too late for him to start waffling.[break][break]

though their conversation the night after the battle in sootopolis had cemented his confidence in many ways, it was still easier to fret when rook was here with him. it was stupid, because he was much more grateful for his partner's presence than not.[break][break]

"i think there's a good spot close by, though..." reluctantly, he untangled their hands to unfold the marked map he'd been carrying in his other hand. he held it up for the both of them to view, squinting as he followed the line of 102. then poked at a particular blue x. "right there. pops, you think you can spot it from up high?" the pidove, who had been resting on his shoulder, chirped and took off into the air.. "i'm sure there's a lot of displaced pokemon out here too..."[break][break]

still, he couldn't shake the nagging feeling - "this wasn't a bad idea, was it? maybe we should've stayed in lilycove. even if we're not up at the front lines, there's still so much to do back home."[break][break]

he wasn't sure if he wanted rook to agree with him, or reassure him. or maybe even just level with him in a way that would snap him out of the spiral of pinging doubts in his head. absently, his eyes drifted away, across the landscape as he watched for any abnormal movement.[break][break]

his focus wasn't too sharp though, only enough to pick up a disturbance without any distinct clarity. and probably a few seconds too slow.

it's not that he really intends to swoop in and save the day like some storybook knight. he just can't really stand to see literal adults ganging up on a teenager like that's a totally fair fight. and with all those genesect? c'mon now. it's like, mad lame. what exactly are they trying to prove?[break][break]

he has no names for these faceless grunts, but they're quick to put a name to him. he grins, giving them a short, mock-salute. all of his persona put forward is cheeky and ironic, even as he turns toward the girl again with another laugh. "i'm just here for back up, i believe you're totally capable." he shoots her a thumbs up, though he doesn't wholly buy it totally.[break][break]

she'd looked like she was in dire straits, but hey - he'd let her hold onto her pride if she really wanted to. probably wouldn't do much good to turn around and lecture her anyway. "lam logan, happy to help. that's virizion, obviously." he jerks a thumb in the sword of justice's direction, and they swing their head toward cass, obviously amused by her abrupt shift toward civility.[break][break]

"keep pushing 'em back!" lam calls out to his companion. as his pidove circles back to perch on his shoulder, virizion lashes out with a viridescent leaf blade, carving a path for the trubbish's attack to travel. "hey, i got something to match!" lam perks up, and the backhanded lob of pokeball sends a garbodor out in a flash of light to join the fray.[break][break]

"jon, judith - judith, jon!" he quips, thankful that he's learned to appreciate poison-types more and incorporate them with his teams, courtesy of his fiancé and his love of everything and anything qualified as odd or stinky. Ikarus Rook would be so proud right now.[break][break]

"pops, judy, you know what's up! stink bombs away!" the garbodor bellows and his pidove darts from his shoulder to the top of judith's head. As she belches out a billowing cloud of poison gas toward the group of rocket, poppy drums up another rippling heat wave that mingles with with the noxious attack and ignites among the genesect in a glorious boom of combustion.[break][break]

"whoever smelt it, dealt it, am i right?" if he were close enough to her, he might've given her a cajoling nudge with an elbow. it's easy to carry himself like this with others. confident bravado in the thick of a fight, lighthearted as if this is no more than a gym match when it's anything but.

Robin might not have pushed back against it, but there was likely something stifling in his check-ins and careful observation of her moods and behaviors. Lam didn’t mean any harm by it, of course he didn’t. It was just…worry. And it was innate. It came naturally, without any doubts or second thoughts. He worried because he cared. What a double edged sword that was.[break][break]
Lam’s gaze shifted between the altaria and Robin thoughtfully. “Well,” he started, rubbing his chin as he approached the large bird. “I’m no scientist, but I have a hunch it was more reactive to the crystabloom in my garden than my other pokemon were.” Obviously that was the case, or he wouldn’t be shimmering with luminescent glow. “I think the care shown toward him when you caught him made him receptive.”[break][break]
There had been well-meant intent behind the act, after all. Maybe that was a fanciful theory, but he liked to think that her hands could create good. And maybe she was in need of hearing as much after everything. Even if she didn’t say it out loud.[berak][break]
He watched the klefki jingle in the air, nose wrinkling at the idea of dealing with toxapex. “Think I’ll pass on the slimy sea creatures, thanks.” He wasn’t sure he’d really ever divulged his dislike of most fish and aquatic sorts, but really? It was probably better that Robin didn’t find out that particular tidbit.[break][break]
She needed no more ammunition against him.[break][break]
“I’ll have this one scout overhead,” he remarked as they set off, giving Dandelion a pat on one downy wing before the altaria lifted into the sky. Lam swayed with the nudge, eyes rolling as he elbowed her back. “Whaaaat? Why would I push for you to skip out on all your matches? Was getting my badge as a freebie not good enough?”[break][break]
His head tilted, “Even if the idea of watching you whoop Greyson is entertaining.”[break][break]
There was more to it, though, of course. A clear line between what was sport and what was true combat. Gym battling wasn’t the same as duking it out against the sorts of people they might come up against today. And it was important to know that difference.

The immediate, expected reaction made him grin. Almost as if he’d known she’d react with distaste at the prospect.[break][break]
“You know, I wouldn’t have admitted it at first, but the stunkies aren’t so bad. Usually.” Big emphasis on the usually. He had one personal stunky to Rook’s several, and it was probably the smelliest creature he’d ever encountered. But this was also an easy way to get Robin to admit altaria were the better alternative.[break][break]
Though he thought he had something maybe more soothing in mind.[break][break]
While he sifted through the fridge, the room fell into momentary silence. It didn’t seem either awkward or calm. More contemplative than anything else. Lam was processing the string of events from his own perspective as much as Robin was absorbing what she’d just done. But he didn’t think twice about offering to keep the ordeal between them. It came naturally.[break][break]
He didn’t expect the quieter response, however.[break][break]
“What? I don’t want it to set you back,” he commented, peeking at her over the top of the fridge’s door briefly. “It was a volatile situation. If anyone tells you they wouldn’t react similarly, they’re probably lying.” He shrugged and pushed the door shut. He didn’t think about it in terms of whether or not it would get him in trouble. And he didn’t feel guilty about the idea of withholding that information—it was her business. “Just be careful not to lose your head going forward. But I’m not like, a super goody two shoes, y’know.”[break][break]
It wouldn’t be the first crime he’d failed to report, though maybe the more violent one.[break][break]
“Incoming,” he warned before gently lobbing a soda can in her direction. Sidestepping into his office, he found the pokemon he was looking for—huddled up in her bed as expected. Scooping her up, Lam brought the sprigatito back to where Robin had settled herself. As if she could sense the remnants of tension, she hopped from his grasp and onto the couch. “That’s Clove. She’s probably better than even my altaria.”[break][break]
Her question drew a snort from him, and Lam rolled his eyes as he plopped down in a chair. "What? No way. I mean, go for captain, but you can't boss me around. I have seniority."
