Curiosity is a driving force, and Fern itches to just reach out and touch the hunk of purple rock.[break][break]

What are they here for, if not to learn from these trials with hands on experience?. Touch the big red button that says DO NOT TOUCH. Or don’t touch it, but when is that ever any fun?[break][break]

But unlike , who they were content to at least attempt to drag about, Fern still defaults when it is who they are working with. Their head tilts, and their fingers curl back and away when it registers that they had been subconsciously extending them closer.[break][break]

“I’m no science whiz, but this is pretty cool.”[break][break]

These are the first words to leave Fern’s mouth as the simulation warps around them in a rush of color and sound. The ruins that build up around them are dark and dank and real as they come. Even the crumbling, stone walls feel damp with condensation. The dirt floor underneath dusty with age.[break][break]

The lilt of something strange and entrancing wafts through the corridors. They look up at with a bright grin, toothy and wide. “Freaky.”[break][break]

For a moment, they forget everything outside of this. Everything that is happening in the real world outside. The stress, the complications, their personal, physical setbacks and hang ups. All of it fades as the discordant melody takes over their thoughts. Like whatever it is out there wants to meet them.[break][break]

Plus sticking around here is boring, no?[break][break]

“Let’s go check it out!” they tug Jayden by the fabric of his jacket sleeve before glancing between the darkness ahead and his face— intent on following the sound to its source.

Fern’s eyes narrow at him, as a teasing little smile twists at their mouth. “You were! You were definitely pouting.” They’re only further convinced by the way he denies it. Not that Fern has any real issue with it–it’s actually kinda pretty cute to see the expression flicker across the face of someone normally so serious.[break][break]

Still, their hand lifts to his shoulder. “You really don’t–”[break][break]

But he won’t be dissuaded, it seems. So Fern relinquishes their effort to convince him otherwise. Their smile shifts to the booth attendant in mild apology, though it’s giving them cash. So really, it’s a small price to pay for a little intimidation.[break][break]

Rather than clap or cheer, they remain silent. If anything to avoid potentially breaking ’s concentration. One by one the darts pop each balloon.[break][break]

It is only after the last POP! that Fern claps their hands together with a bright laugh. “You really don’t quit, huh?”[break][break]

Their smile widens as they accept the dreepy and give its plush body a little squeeze.[break][break]

His words provoke another laugh and they shake their head before their arm winds through his so that they can lean their head against his shoulder. “No, you really really showed those balloons who’s boss.”

A soft huff of laughter follows the confession he makes, amused that even after all this time, he can’t help but be amazed by such a simple little thing. That no matter where they are, Fern will come looking for him.[break][break]

Eyes fall shut for that time, their hands smoothing over him. “Well I should hope you’d only want it to be me,” they tease as they lean into his touch. The question brings them back to reality, though, and they weigh their words with a quiet sigh.[break][break]

“Ah, pretty confusing, honestly.” Fern shrugs, somewhat unbothered. “But I have a feeling it’s going to be that way for a while yet. Until we figure out what’s going on.”[break][break]

Their hands slide up and down his arms soothingly as they look him over. “Might as well rest while we can, no?”[break][break]

None of this feels real. Not truly. If Fern were to be honest right then, they’d have to admit that it’s all more than a little bit daunting. It’s only a matter of time before they’re home where they’re rightfully meant to be.[break][break]

Is there any point in playing at royalty? Even if just to humor the peasantry who’ve come out of hiding to laud their new nobles?[break][break]

Maybe when they wake, it will all have been a dream.[break][break]

These are doubts that Fern stuffs down, though. They’re not the sorts of worries that they need to drum up or work either of them into a tizzy over. They paint over the concern with a smile gifted to Jayden. “Any idea what we’re supposed to do now?”

Nope, couldn’t pay him enough money to make that leap. No matter how greedy he might’ve been. Self-preservation always came first. If that’s what thrills and , though— well, all the power to ‘em. Despite his chiding of @kelpie’s delay, he relinquished Cecilia as she too chose the more optimal route. The dragapult was quick to open up another portal for her to step inside with her coat.[break][break]

Standing in the darkened room, it looked like for at least a few spare moments, they could catch their breath before the hive crossed the distance in an attempt to catch their wanted quarry.[break][break]

It was only at that time that Fern remembered to relinquish the hold he’d had on tapu koko, who was now trying to tug free and push the admin off of them.[break][break]

Though in the flurry of the moment, the island deity didn’t notice the fact that Fern managed to pull the primal shard free of its clutching pincer and stuff the piece of crystal in his pocket again. Their bickering quelled when Temp lifted a finger to his lips. Fern’s jaw snapped shut, and he strode forward to follow the other, hand finding his in the dark as the other fumbled for whoever was behind him. Tapu koko hovered off to the side, determined to not be clung to again.[break][break]

Whoever Calpurnia had grabbed…it wasn’t him. Though Fern also froze in place, before looking back at Cillian to point toward the staircase before shrugging. Just to see if they should just up and bolt.[break][break]

If they wanted to get out of there without going toe to toe with whatever it was shuffling through that door, anyway.

Fern’s Salandit scrambled free again as Fern stretched his hands up to catch the pokeball that dropped from the air— now holding the koffing. Still eager to please, it tried to sink POISON FANGS into a safer target. The slowpoke certainly wasn’t as prickly as its prior opponent. The lizard was too small, however, to drag the lazy creature back to his trainer.

So instead it trill pitifully. On and on until Fern approached to toss a ball at Salandit’s new quarry.
