Not that she particularly felt bad. Well, not at first. Heā€™d gotten in her space and startled her. It was a knee-jerk reaction from someone who was accustomed to sticking up for herself and for her brother.[break][break]
If he didnā€™t want to get elbowed, he shouldnā€™t have been creeping over her shoulder.[break][break]
Itā€™s a mentality that quickly faded from her mind as she whirled around to tell him as much. Self-consciousness had been at the back of her mind, but it crept in as other people in the coffee shop turned to side eye the commotion. It prickles at the back of her neck, but the flush that had begun to seep into her face didnā€™t darken until she looked up at the man curling in on himself at her feet.[break][break]
She blinks repeatedly as the familiar shock of teal blue hair registers in her mind. No. No way.[break][break]
Then it fully clicks and her mind erupts into pure, flustered chaos when he actually manages to glance up at her.[break][break]
ā€œOh. Ohmygod.ā€ Her face goes completely crimson, all of her bravado gone.[break][break]
Xiao. The Xiao. She just elbowed, the Xiao in the balls because heā€™d caught her watching a fancam tiktok of him..[break][break]
Eyes round and mortified, Calla stoops down beside him. Offering hands to help him up, though sheā€™s not sure she can really pull him up. Sheā€™s tough, but not that strong. Heart hammering in her chest, her expression pulls into a wincing grimace. All of her normal pride and steeliness falling away in favor of her embarrassment and alsoā€¦her reprehensible, swooning, fangirlish behavior. Which was also embarrassing as hell, quite frankly.[break][break]

But after a particular mission, something seems to shift. Itā€™s a strange, surreal kind of thing: walking into work one day and expecting the typical Matias sheā€™s come to know. Only to meet a completely different one.[break][break]
The reports that people of her rank are edited down. Just the details needed to keep on working.[break][break]
So when Matias invites her away from HQ, of course sheā€™s gonna go.[break][break]
Her boots sink into loamy dirt as they wander the lakeshore, and she glances up with him with curious eyes. ā€œI feel like I should be the one asking you that, Matias.ā€[break][break]
She flips the long rope of her braid over one shoulder. ā€œAlright, I guess. Busy. Somehow, even when Iā€™m youā€™re rep, and youā€™re stuck elsewhere.ā€ Itā€™s said with the air of a loose joke, though. Nothing truly resentful.

Sheā€™s sorely needed this break. Even if itā€™s only a day away from work, it feels monumental. Even if she spends more and more time at his place, or vice versa, it feels like she never gets to see him.[break][break]
Maybe thatā€™s just the dramatism of young love or whatever.[break][break]
ā€œUhhm,ā€ she puffs out a long breath, strands of silvery blonde flying away from her face. ā€œCaterpie?ā€ Calla rolls from her back to her stomach lazily, stretching her limbs like a sleepy liepard before folding her arms under her cheek as she studies Uriah.[break][break]
The movement unintentionally (or not so much,) draws her closer to his side despite the heat of the sun bearing down on them.[break][break]

Her worries fade in the wake of his response, eyes following his face as he stands. As he does so, her hands slip away from his face, unable to hold on as his height overtakes her shorter stature.[break][break]
For a moment, her eyes flutter shut as his own hands mirror her touch, and she lets her smile widen.[break][break]
This is what sheā€™s been missing out on all this time, isnā€™t it?[break][break]
Then again, something like this wouldnā€™t be the same if it were with anyone other than Uriah.[break][break]
ā€œYeah?ā€ she replies as finally looks up at him again, heat burning her cheeks despite the reciprocated feelings.[break][break]

But would someone who is as monstrous as much of the public makes him out to be, really care about basic appreciation?[break][break]

To her, it rings of the sacrifices it takes to make it to the point he stands at. To climb that high on risky chances and small odds.[break][break]

To her, it rings of what could happen if sheā€™s not careful.[break][break]

Itā€™s a gamble she has to take. Thereā€™s no telling if her call is the correct oneā€”is he speaking in earnest, or is he lying through his teeth?[break][break]

Her thought had been that if she just swung by that little cafe on the corner, she could tip tap away at the stupidly elaborate planner spreadsheet saved on her laptop (as a precious backup to the one on her work computer.)[break][break]

Normally she scrolled past the fancams that would pop up on her feed, but her thumb paused then hovered away at the familiar flash of bright, tealish-blue hair. Okay, she was a fan, so sheā€™d watch this oneā€”even if these sorts of videos were kinda corny.[break][break]

The beach has never been her go-to choice, but for some strange reason, she finds herself more sentimental toward it. Even if she hasnā€™t really been there since that charity sale a year prior. Perhaps that plays a role in her eagerness to stretch out in the warm sand, and spend time in the preferred company of .[break][break]

The hurdle of leaving Akura feels like itā€™s passed, but a part of her wonders if heā€™s accepted it fully. Surely he hasā€”enough time has gone by. Surely these are no more than silly worries built up in her head because sheā€™s always one to wait for the other shoe to drop.[break][break]

Itā€™s that silly part of her that hopes coming back to a place they first really began to see one another in a different light will help cement their connection, whether sheā€™s fabricating any uncertainty or not.[break][break]
