Calla shrugs lightly, “I guess I can see your point, but at the same time—isn’t it a bit farcical to believe we’d ever be in position to truly control something so vastly beyond us?” It seems like an impractical angle to propagandize, so maybe the question becomes—[break][break]

“Doesn't that just mean you’re fighting an uphill battle?” Or maybe a losing one. She huffs, though at his addition.[break][break]

“It’s a nice sentiment, but I’m not Eva’s PR rep, I’m yours, and I think you should be looking out for your own interests instead of playing protector.” She doesn’t add the tidbit where she thinks that Eva wouldn’t be going through anything if he hadn’t already put her through it in the first place.[break][break]

“Good question— I sure hope they haven’t run into any trouble.” Leave it to the one time she chooses to be less clingy of Kieran Roth for more trouble to strike. Hand shielding her eyes from the sun, she peers down into the massive crater, mouth opening to call out for the other two members of their party.[break][break]

A great shadow overhead blots out the light, and she goes silent again. Looking up as the great, silvery moon rises in the sky up above them. “Izumi, look!” What the hell was the moon doing out in the middle of the day?[break][break]

No matter the answer, though, it remains and soon enough, she can see both Kieran and Uriah making the climb back up the rocky siding of the crater. She turns to Izumi, then whistles for her meganium to return from its brief parameter jaunt around one side of the crater. “Looks like this might be our cue to get scarce.”[break][break]

After all, who knows if their offer was a pleasing one—or if it woke something up. Either way, Calla didn’t want to wait and find out.[break][break]

She would call it…work research. Hands on style. How else was she gonna know how to assist in her PR position if all she did was read reports on what had happened, and MATIAS SILPH ’s involvement that day? In Calla’s opinion—not a very good job would be done on her part.[break][break]

It was well meant when she’d told him weeks ago that she was there to work for him and was on his side, if he was straightforward with her. Due to what she considers justifiable skepticism….this is what she considers a degree of added reassurance.[break][break]

Aka she’s nosy. She’s curious and determined. This probably doesn’t have anything to do with work at all. But she’s there, and she’s going to step through the rift and at least get a little look around.[break][break]

URIAH BLACK would probably be up in arms to know she’d come alone. Kieran Roth too, for that matter. But Calla is used to functioning independently. And it’s much too late to leave now.[break][break]

What she doesn’t anticipate, though, is someone coming back at the same moment she moves forward. A hand goes to the pokeball in her pocket, but there’s no real good way to react when it’s GABRIEL BLACK who materializes in front of her.[break][break]

“I did, I cared.” A litany of worries—would this get him in trouble with his father? What would repercussions be? Why should I have to keep my happiness a secret because of a job?[break][break]

A soft frown lingers on her face, “Uri..”[break][break]

She knows when he’s faking a smile for her sake. When that secondhand familiarity crept in and settled into her heart, she’s not sure.[break][break]

Hands still cradling his face, her thumbs trace the edges of that smile, silently willing it to brighten.[break][break]

“You don’t sound too convinced…” she chews on her bottom lip as she smooths his hair back. Heart fluttering in her throat like a trapped hummingbird as she finally speaks again, voice small and quiet. Small and careful as the smile she offers.[break][break]

“I love you, you know? I don’t want to hide that away anymore.”[break][break]

Nerves set alight in her stomach at offering something so vulnerable, but she keeps calm. As soothing as she can manage.

She had seen the damage done to the landscape surrounding his home. Had wondered at it curiously before shrugging it off in her irritation.[break][break]

“That’s all?” she asks, brows knitting together as she watches him. There’s something scrutinizing there in the violet of her eyes, but it’s more studious than critical. As someone unattached, the fact of his separation from Eva doesn’t strike her with any sort of feeling apart from the fact that it is simply unfortunate.[break][break]

Perhaps that impartiality is for the better—allow him the opportunity to not be crowded by everything surrounding the situation.[break][break]

“There are no other reasons stemming from this? Why the big cover story then? If it was just…conflict.” The legendary Pokémon who have made themselves known to the region, who have attached themselves to people are a cut above.[break][break]

In her mind, as little as she enjoys the concept, it’s an unavoidable truth that they are largely not to be controlled. This only seems like evidence of it.

She hums as Izumi Yamamura throws out suggestions before looking up at the other woman where she remains perched on her braviary. "Maybe even a nautilus shell? Like an omanyte, or an omastar?" Calla's brows lift, and she twists to rummage in her backpack to snag the pokeball of her own omanyte.[break][break]

But they already seem to be onto something down in the basin of the crater, because in a flash of light, URIAH BLACK's slowbro appears. "Huh." Impatience starts to get the better of her, and she almost skids down the side of the gravelly embankment to join him and Kieran Roth.[break][break]

Because so far? Nothing up here for them to be concerned about. But she'd also rather not be chased by an overgrown durant again. Instead, she tucks the pokeball under her arm and cups her hands around her mouth. "Hey! Is something supposed to happen?"[break][break]

Whatever it was, she sure hopes it's not a trap or something to bring the law of the jungle down upon them.

She nodded slightly, “Right. That’s good advice, thanks.” She worked at the other tray of drinks, waffling it as she tried to slip them into another bag.[break][break]

Calla didn’t fail to notice the flicker of his expression. “Doesn’t sound like you like her too much, despite the parts that are a little more complimentary.” She wondered why that was. Was it personal, maybe? Or maybe they just grated when put in a room together. But she didn’t push too hard, lest he decided that he no longer wanted to help her with all these drinks because she was too nosy. “Yep! I thinnnnk that should be everything.” She holds her portion up, smiling politely.[break][break]

Without any fanfare, Calla moved toward the coffee shop’s exit, no doubt to the delight and relief of the baristas on staff. “Alright, let’s go. Thanks again. You’re a lifesaver.”

She snorts, rocking sideways to bump him with her hip playfully. Glancing flitting sideways and up to look at him as she continues scooping batter.[break][break]

“And so humble on top of gifted. Wow, I really won the lottery, huh?”[break][break]

It’s no more than a sarcastic tease, but the last bit is meant sincerely. In her opinion, she has majorly lucked out.[break][break]

The kiss on her cheek earns a laugh, and another bump. But soon enough the job is done. Calla sets the timer once the sheet pan is slipped into the oven.[break][break]

She shakes her head. “It’s not just about that. That’s not what I meant.”[break][break]

Falling silent as he continues, Calla nods and one hand slides up and smooths through his hair carefully. She doesn’t force him to look up at her again. Only lets him have that moment for a bit as her fingers trace through red repetitively.[break][break]

Again, guilt batters against her ribcage for choosing to make a step upward. It’s not a lateral move, it’s really an elevation. But the last thing she wants is for this to sour things.[break][break]

“That’s okay, I’m sorry. It’s not because of you, okay? I’ve loved working here. I’ve loved, uh, working with you.”[break][break]

It might be meant differently than how she says it, but it’s still said. And he’s not wrong–it won’t be as fun to not see him so much every day. “But I thought, I guess. Maybe it’d be a relief, you know? No more sneaking around…we could actually be, like, normal couples. Public, or whatever.”
