"Sure." It normally was a long story, when it came to why civilians found themselves wandering in the Ultra Wilds.[break][break]

Gunner suppressed an annoyed sigh and gestured all around them. "Welcome to the Ultra Deep Sea, where dangerous Ultra Beasts dwell and prolonged exposure can cause anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations."[break][break]

He spoke with the straightest face and most serious tone.[break][break]

"I'm here to investigate that," he continued with a nod at the wreckage that had caught the other man's attention. "Our reports suggest it's of Megalopolan design, so there may be information in it that can help us fight them."[break][break]

There'd been a rash of Megalopolan attacks on civilians and League personnel alike since the late summer. Though a few had been captured and interrogated, law enforcement still had no idea what their numbers were like.[break][break]

"It's probably better for you if you come with me," Gunner said. "There's safety in numbers out here. Enid, can you SURF us over there?"[break][break]

The Raichu, who had been squinting suspiciously at the stranger, nodded and conjured an enormous wave from thin air. It swept up the humans and Pokémon in its tumultuous motion and deposited them directly to the entrance of the ship.[break][break]

Gunner frowned at Thomas' recollection. Smaller gangs were not the purview of the HBIC, as they left those matters to local police departments most of the time. But the story was neither new nor unexpected. When it came to criminals, whoever held power over a territory or business made the rules.[break][break]

The pirates on the screens did not seem to notice the cameras pointed at them. Instead, the shadowed figures milled about the dock, chatting with each other and laughing. Unfortunately, the nearest cameras weren't picking up their conversation.[break][break]

"I don't think so."[break][break]

Gunner wished he could arrest them on the spot, but he and Thomas had been instructed to observe. A bust could come later once they had more intel.[break][break]

And besides, nothing they were doing suggested criminal activity. Not yet, anyway.

Despite the fact that the main rift entrance into the Ultra Deep Sea was guarded by League personnel at all hours of the day, they could not guard all the smaller, random rifts that periodically appeared, let alone stop them from opening in the first place.[break][break]

As a result, Gunner was completely unsurprised to see a familiar stranger back away from the precipice overlooking an enormous chasm. He suppressed a sigh and trudged over, his black-furred Raichu hopping along at his side.[break][break]

"It's you again," he said to the young man who'd been at the bank robbery. "Are you lost?"[break][break]

All around them, a deep and unsettling heartbeat echoed. Gunner was used to the sound, having visited this realm many times to help with mineral extractions.[break][break]

Gunner observed the other man's disheveled, drunken state. He remembered, then, catching a glimpse of his new neighbor on move-in day. But Gunner had been on his way out, and had therefore been too busy to introduce himself or even say hello.[break][break]

When the man attempted to open Gunner's apartment door with a car key, the blonde sighed. "Hey, that's my place. I think you're in that one."[break][break]

He gestured with his takeout bag to the opposite door, across the hall.[break][break]

Gunner picked up the coffee and waited for Thomas to sip from his own cup before taking a drink. It was a bit too bitter for his taste, but black coffee on a stakeout was part of the ritual.[break][break]

"The dynamics between criminal factions is more complicated than one would think," Gunner mused aloud. "Team Rocket is obviously the biggest annoyance, but they'll allow smaller groups if it suits them."[break][break]

Another sip. He focused his gaze on the monitors, watching the silent, dark harbor.[break][break]

"These pirates—I wouldn't be surprised if they were in Team Rocket's pocket. Obtaining Pokémon for their smuggling operations, that sort of thing."[break][break]

Motion from one of the screens caught his eye. A small, sleek boat pulled up to one of the piers.[break][break]

"Look," Gunner said, pointing with his free hand. "Is that them?" If so, the pirates were early.

Once again, Gunner nodded, understanding.[break][break]

"Let's. But first, I want to make sure this one doesn't hurt another innocent bystander." Selecting a Pokéball from his belt, he released his Aromatisse. "Nimue, can you help calm down that Pokémon?"[break][break]

The pink Fairy-type chirped agreeably and floated over to the Absol. AROMATHERAPY released a soothing scent into the air. Slowly, as it inhaled more of the sweet smell, the agitated Dark-type relaxed. It lay down in the corner.[break][break]

"I'm Gunner, by the way," the agent said to the older man, showing him the ID card he kept in his pocket. Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, it said. "You are?"

Gunner did not know much about Thomas Benoit. Of course, he had read the man's file. Former Elite Four member, former Avatar of Yveltal, and—apparently—a former vigilante. But they had never crossed paths before, even if their goals aligned.[break][break]

Suffice to say, Gunner did not know what to expect. dahlia goode had pardoned Thomas and allowed him to join the HBIC on a probationary period. And certainly, a man such as Thomas was a great asset to the Bureau.[break][break]

But that did not make Gunner trust him. Not yet.[break][break]

"Sure. Thank you," he said at the offer of coffee. At least he could be polite, even if he didn't feel like being friendly.[break][break]

Gunner turned his gaze to the wall of monitors. At his side, his Zoroark crouched in wait; five other Pokéballs adorned his belt.[break][break]

"We still have a bit of time before they're scheduled to arrive."

Gunner nodded, understanding the older man's concern. The disaster that Absol usually heralded could range from minor car accidents to ground-shattering phenomenon. When the meteoroid was still a looming threat in the sky, the whole species had been especially agitated.[break][break]

So which threat approached Hoenn now? Many mysteries were still unsolved: the location of Palkia and Dialga, the Silent Icelands left behind by Kyurem, the new rifts to the Distortion World. Could it be one of them, or something new?[break][break]

"Have the Rangers been called yet?" Gunner asked, his gaze sliding to the Absol in the corner.[break][break]

Usually, when Pokémon posed a problem to the public, the esteemed organization of Hoenn's Rangers were summoned to assist. But no Rangers had been present among the crowd or professionals outside.

I don't forgive people very easily, even if the world wants me to.

5. Who or what 3 objects would you bring with you if you were stuck on a deserted island?
A tent, a sleeping bag, and a first aid kit. This assumes I have six Pokemon with me, though.

7. Do you have a sibling, or someone like one? If so, what's your relationship like?
Yes, I have an older brother. We don't hang out as much as we did when we were kids, but I still look up to him a lot. I value his advice and company.

8. How would you like to be remembered after you die?
As someone who did his best to protect others.

9. Do you name your Pokemon? Why, or why not? Do you follow a certain theme?
Yes, I do. It makes your relationship feel more like friendship, you know? I name my Pokemon after heroes and other figures from Galarian myth, literature, and folklore.

A crowd had gathered outside the café indicated in the eyewitness reports. Curious onlookers with their phones out, recording videos, glanced at Gunner as he strode past them into the establishment. Murmurs grew louder at his presence, silenced only by the front door as it shut behind him.[break][break]

Inside, EMTs were already tending to the wounded patrons and their Pokémon. The injuries looked awful but not mortal, at least from where he stood.[break][break]

But he was not there to assess the victims. He turned away from them to the reason for his arrival, the perpetrator of the assault.[break][break]

An Absol, domesticated, owned by a distraught-looking young woman whose head was cradled in the gentle hands of an EMT.[break][break]

Gunner found the Pokémon in question in the café's kitchen, backed up into a corner between a large refrigerator and a wall. It was visibly distressed, snarling and barking at the only other person there.[break][break]

"Is it not standing down?" Gunner asked as he approached with slow, cautious steps. A hand hovered near a Pokéball at his belt, just in case.

By the time Gunner reached the property in question, the suspicious figure was nowhere to be seen. With his hand, he signaled for Kay to search one side of the house for an entrance while he searched the other. Then he drew his gun from a concealed holster and crept into the shadows.[break][break]

Eventually, he found what he was looking for: an open window.[break][break]

Gunner glanced toward the street, noting that Genevieve still hadn't arrived. He didn't have time to wait for her, though. So, stepping on some abandoned bags of fertilizer left piled under the window, he hoisted himself up and into the house.[break][break]

Everywhere was darkness. Without a light, he could barely see past the room he stood inside, the kitchen. Staying stock still, he listened carefully for any sound. Then he heard it: a shuffle from his left.[break][break]

Gunner swerved, raising his gun. Instead of another human, though, he found himself face-to-face with a Hypno. The sight of the Pokémon surprised him, causing him to lower his gun by a fraction.[break][break]

Light gleamed on the Hypno's pendulum, the only warning before a PSYBEAM lit up the kitchen. Gunner threw himself onto the floor, barely dodging it. "Kay!" he yelled.[break][break]

The Kecleon materialized seemingly out of thin air, swiping at the Hypno with FEINT ATTACK.
