Mila's gentle caresses of his face and hair were drawing Gunner into a deeper relaxation. He turned his face toward her, cracking open an eye as the corner of his mouth lifted in the most private smile. Nothing felt more perfect than the way they lay tangled up together. [break][break]

Her statement prompted him to try shaking off some of his sleepiness, however. Opening both eyes, he drew her closer, his arm secure around her waist. [break][break]

"No, you haven't,” Gunner murmured, patient, tender. "Why are you afraid, darling?” [break][break]

Mila was right. Gunner couldn’t resist her. Not her smiles or kisses, nor her soft confessions during their most intimate moments, nor the way she moved against him and moaned in his ear. Every experience with her was another act of falling for her, and that time was no different. [break][break]

And though Gunner had always given Mila everything he had, the raw connection from their unshielded hearts added another layer to their union. A deeper meaning. He held her close and never wanted to let her go. [break][break]

Afterward, he lay flat on his back with his arm curled around her, tucking her against his side. A euphoric haze clouded his mind while a bone-deep satisfaction permeated every inch of his body. Tangled in the sheets with her, he was perfectly happy to release his grip on the waking world and fall into a contented slumber.

Gunner spotted the photograph of his younger self on the nightstand a second before Mila pushed him onto the bed. He laughed softly, his attention shifting to focus on her. Grasping her hands, he pulled her down onto him as he lay back on the mattress. [break][break]

”My darling, I’ll make love to you all day if that’s what you want,” he said, the corner of his mouth curling into a crooked grin. Now that he’d confessed, that word didn’t seem so foreboding anymore. ”But at least give me a few hours to recharge after I’ve been awake since yesterday morning.” [break][break]

Despite his words, his fingers pulled at her clothing, urging her to remove them.

Gunner knew not to expect words from Mila. When she grabbed the knot of his tie and pulled him into a passionate kiss, he knew he had all the answer he needed. So he gathered her up in his arms, returning the kiss with equal fervor. He pulled her against his body and moved his mouth in the language only they shared, that deepest intimacy no one else could understand. [break][break]

After what felt like an eternity, Gunner drew away, his energy flagging as the adrenaline of their argument drained from his body. [break][break]

”Come to bed with me,” he murmured, tugging on her hand. ”I’m not going anywhere else. I’m tired and I want to fall asleep knowing you’ll be there when I wake up.” [break][break]

And even if she wasn’t—even if she got up afterward to do something else—he knew she wouldn’t be far from him. They always found their way back to each other, after all.

By stepping back, Gunner had intended to give Mila space. She closed the distance between them anyway, grasping his forearms, the anger clearing from her face as confusion and wariness took its place. Her demand prompted him to meet her gaze. [break][break]

"I don't want you to think I'm stuck in the past," he said, shaking his head. "That I'm still thinking about her or living my life because of her. That's not true, not anymore." [break][break]

Heart pounding in his chest, palms sweaty with a sudden onslaught of nerves, he gave Mila a rueful smile. [break][break]

"You're the one person who consumes my thoughts, Mila. Day in and day out. Sometimes I think I'm going crazy. But it's been years, and I haven't been able to stop. I don't want to stop." [break][break]

Gunner took a deep, steadying breath. [break][break]

"Because I love you, Mila."

Gunner froze. [break][break]

Mila never mentioned Sayori. After finding out about the box of memories years ago and listening to his explanation, she'd never brought up his dead ex-girlfriend again. He assumed she wanted to respect that chapter of his life and his grief surrounding it. [break][break]

Now she demanded that he let it go and live in the present moment. [break][break]

"I care about you." [break][break]

Had Mila ever said those words before? Had she ever been so honest and transparent about her feelings with him? In all the years they'd known each other, he couldn't remember. [break][break]

Though frustration lingered, a softness snuck into Gunner's face. He released his grip on her and stepped back. [break][break]

"I admit that's how this all started, but this is who I am now. Maybe it's who I've always been, deep down." He sighed. "I'm sorry I'm not the man you want me to be. But I..." [break][break]

He paused, the rest of the confession on the tip of his tongue, yearning to break free.

By that point, Gunner recognized when Mila spoke from a tidal surge of emotion, not logic. She was wrong, of course; plenty of people cared whether he lived or died. GIDEON GRAVES. paxton concordas. Even PENELOPE LIVY. But Gunner knew better than to call Mila out, so instead, he focused on her other words. [break][break]

"Of course I care about you!" he shouted, not bothering to jerk away from her grasp of his shoulder. In turn, he grabbed her upper arms, tight enough to make her understand how serious he was, but not enough to hurt her. [break][break]

"Everything I'm doing now is because I care about you! You hate and fear Team Rocket, and I'm doing everything in my power to drive them out of Hoenn! More than anything, I want to make a world where you can be happy and carefree and not have nightmares anymore." [break][break]

He sighed, relenting a little at last. In a more subdued, tired tone, he said, "If I die while making that reality come true, it will be worth it. You'll be free."

"Talk about what, Mila?" Gunner exploded, finally at the end of his patience with her. He stood, jostling his Umbreon from his lap, and stomped toward the window. Hands on his hips, he glared out at the Rustboro skyline, trying not to seethe. [break][break]

"We are talking! I'm telling you my reasons and you aren't paying attention! No—you are, but you just don't care what I say, do you?" The bitterness in his face had traveled into his throat and now underscored his words. [break][break]

He whirled around to glare at her. "Maybe you don't give a shit about other people or what goes on in this goddamned region, but I do! And if you can't respect that—can't respect me—then what the fuck am I doing here? Huh? Tell me." [break][break]

Blue eyes narrowed as they locked with her amaranth ones. "You want to talk, so talk already."

At Mila's accusation, Gunner jerked his head up. Lack of sleep made his short temper even shorter, and he opened his mouth to snap back, only to catch sight of the tears she swiped away with haste. He saw the tumult of emotions there; where once he would have noticed only her anger and hatred, now he saw the hurt and concern for his well-being, too. [break][break]

Were there other people who could have taken his place? Yes, without a doubt. But being tasked with such responsibility and trust was an honor; it meant he had been PENELOPE LIVY's top choice. [break][break]

Only a coward who feared his own incompetence would have refused. [break][break]

"I'm glad it was me," he said, the conviction in his voice softened by his ragged appearance. "There could've been more civilian deaths if I hadn't been there. It pains me enough that we lost lives at all." [break][break]

Bitterness stole into his expression as he exhaled a heavy sigh. "I don't expect you to understand, but I chose this job because it gives me purpose. If you can't deal with that…" He shrugged. "I'll go home, then."

Of course Mila yelled anyway. [break][break]

Gunner's eyes flew open as he lifted his head to regard the woman standing before him with fists clenched. "I work for the Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, Mila," he said, enunciating every word to emphasize their meaning. "What do you think I do? I protect the region." [break][break]

It was a vague enough answer, one that drew no conclusions and, therefore, allowed the imagination to run wild with possibility. And Mila had such an active imagination. To head off any panic, he added: [break][break]

"I was at the conference as head of security, and what happened was a huge security breach. That's what I mean by 'damage control'." [break][break]

The reminder of his wretched night redirected his frustration away from her, and Gunner leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees and head in his hands. Not moving, Laudine purred in an attempt to soothe her master.

Mila withdrew her wrist from Gunner's reach. He froze at once, understanding the meaning of that silent gesture. She was denying him the option to simply dismiss what had happened as something outside her concern. [break][break]

Worry gave way to irritation. With a heavy sigh of exasperation, he dropped onto the couch. [break][break]

"I don't want to fight you right now, Mila," he said hotly, feeling the threads of his self-control snapping like wire. "I've pulled a fucking all-nighter doing damage control and the last thing I need right now is for you to scream at me." [break][break]

Closing his eyes, Gunner let his head fall back against the couch and rubbed his forehead with a hand. Laudine hopped onto the cushions beside him, curling up and resting her head on his lap.

Gunner flinched at Mila's sudden outburst, but her shouts filling the room was better than the dreadful, awful silence from a moment ago. In a way, he felt relief. He could handle her screaming. [break][break]

"Look, I'm sorry," he said, both hands raised as if in surrender, too exhausted to fight her. "I told you I was working at a conference yesterday. It was broadcasted live. No one expected Team Rocket to attack." [break][break]

Least of all him, who had been in charge of security that day. The gut punch that all his preparations for weeks had been for naught still haunted him at every turn. [break][break]

Lowering his hands, Gunner touched Mila's wrist that was closer to him. "But I'm here now. I'm fine. See?" [break][break]

He invited her to reciprocate the touch, to confirm that he was solid and whole in front of her. Somehow, instinct told him that beneath her anger was a distinct and familiar fear.

Gunner committed the description to memory as best as he could. He repeated it back to Yuina so he was certain he heard the details correctly. "Dark brown hair and eyes, square face, short nose, just under six feet." [break][break]

Still, he did not make any promises. Doing so would cross the line from professional to personal. All he could do was leave Yuina with a flicker of hope. And so, when she thanked him, he inclined his head in acknowledgement and farewell. [break][break]

"Thank you for your time. Have a good day, Miss Higashi." [break][break]

Gunner left her there in the food court and did not look back.

Despite the high stress of the investigation, Paxton's words of support helped reassure Gunner somewhat. As he packed up his laptop and other belongings, he flashed the other man a grateful smile. [break][break]

"Thanks. I really appreciate the help," Gunner said. [break][break]

Slinging his laptop bag over one shoulder and finishing his coffee, he started for the door. Only when Paxton mentioned the upcoming sparring session did Gunner pause, his hand on the handle. [break][break]

"See you there," he promised, smirking. "You better get your ass ready for a beating." [break][break]

He slipped out of the room before his friend could snipe back at him.
