"I appreciate that," Gunner said of Paxton's offer to help speak with the families of those who'd died. "I imagine we'll be doing a lot more of it once the report of the missing and dead is released to us. Because you're right: Rockets weren't the only ones we took in." [break][break]

Gunner stared at his laptop's screen, no less stumped than he was when he and Paxton first started scouring the databases. Sipping his coffee, he checked his email again for any new messages. While he found a handful, none of them were about the requested access to the mysterious report. [break][break]

"That would be great if you could," he said when Paxton offered to speak with their boss. "Maybe she'll listen to you more than she has been listening to me." [break][break]

With a sigh, he closed his laptop, putting it to sleep. [break][break]

"In the meantime, I have to conduct more interviews. I'll catch you later?" Gunner asked.

Gunner turned back at the sound of his name, frowning slightly. Yuina's concern and question were understandable, but she raised a point that also stumped him. The report on the casualties and victims still hadn't been released internally. [break][break]

He couldn't answer her question even if he wanted to. [break][break]

"For the sake of the victims' privacy, that list may not be released to the general public," he said, dodging her question of when. "Did you lose someone during the attack? A friend, or…?"

CONGRATULATIONS ON SIX YEARS, HOENN! That's such a long time already! I joined up before the 4th Anniversary and it's been such a wild ride, full of highs and lows and everything in-between. I'm so glad I did, because I've grown so much as a writer and roleplayer thanks to this site, and I've made such great friends through it, too. Who'd have thought, back then, that my silly little sociopath character idea would have such a big impact to the stories told here?

Huge thanks to Shiv, Spiral, and Crow for keeping the site running, for the stories, for the jokes and laughter.

Gunner spread his hands in the universal gesture for not knowing. "I only met Hisakawa for this assignment, so I can't say I trust him. But he passed the background check, and nothing about his interview struck me as suspicious." [break][break]

Gunner sighed and dropped his hands into his lap. A somberness emerged in his voice as he continued, "I'm still working through the rest of the security team interviews, though. It's been slow going because we did lose some men and women in the attack, so I've had to make some family visits." [break][break]

At least the families of those deceased did not have to wait long to learn about their loved ones. Calls had already started to pour in from the relatives of injured or dead civilians, whose bodies the HBIC had collected in the immediate aftermath of the attack. [break][break]

"The missing bodies are troubling me, too. I haven't been able to get any data on them—no reports, nothing. When I talked with Penny this morning, she said she'd handle it." Gunner shook his head. "She wouldn't need to if we just had access."

The first part of Penelope's response felt like a patronizing reminder from a superior who knew better. Gunner's mouth pressed into a thin line, professionalism keeping his words behind the cage bars of his teeth. [break][break]

And even when she declared she would take point on the obstacle, relief did not lighten the weight on his shoulders. [break][break]

"Thank you. In the meantime, I can check for any breaches with our cybersecurity team." [break][break]

Still, something was amiss. He could feel it in his gut. [break][break]

"Who should I follow up with for the report, once you've sorted out the delay?" he asked, attempting to sound nonchalant. [break][break]

Within the HBIC, the National Security and Intelligence divisions had a veritable army of data analysts, desk-bound pencil-pushers who were, nevertheless, essential to the Bureau's operations. Gunner knew a few by name. [break][break]

Regardless of Penelope's answer, he could have some discreet conversations with them.

Kyrenai did not yield despite her words. Gunner met her even gaze, one that only averted when he produced the sketch. When she denied recognizing the terrorist leader, he kept the disappointment from clouding his face. [break][break]

"That'd be very helpful, thank you," he said, biting back a question about the exact nature of her associates. "Please let me know if you learn anything new. You know how to reach me." [break][break]

Gunner doubted Kyrenai had any more information to offer at that moment, and leaving on a good note would help his investigation. So he picked up his phone, the recording still running. [break][break]

"Those are all the questions I wanted to ask you today, Miss Black. Thanks again for taking the time to meet with me." Flashing her a tight smile, he stood from his chair, fully intending to show himself to the door if she didn't.

Gunner had half-expected Mila to still be in bed, but the drone of the television told him otherwise. A second later, he registered the slender frame of his lover standing, unmoving, in the living room. [break][break]

Staring at news reporters discussing the previous afternoon's attack on the Slateport conference. [break][break]

Oh fuck, Gunner thought, alarm flaring inside him. Crossing the room to reach Mila's side, he placed a gentle hand on her shoulder to get her attention. "Hey. Mila. I'm home," he repeated softly. "Are you okay? Have you had breakfast yet?" [break][break]

Blue eyes flickered to the TV, where reporters volleyed speculations back and forth about the extent of Team Rocket's actual involvement. Irritation chased Gunner's earlier shock, and he twisted to scan the room for the remote control.

Unfortunately, he felt he had reached the limit of Yuina's knowledge. Offering her his attempt at a reassuring smile, he took out a business card bearing his name and his phone number at HBIC headquarters. [break][break]

"Those are all the questions I had for you today. If you learn anything else, please don't hesitate to call me." The card slid across the table in her direction.

Gunner recognized Kyrenai's questioning as an attempt to wrestle the interrogation from him, a common tactic for diverting conversation away from the subject herself. He recognized it immediately. [break][break]

"I'm the one asking questions here, Miss Black," he reminded her. Relaxing his clenched hand, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. Unfolding it revealed a composite sketch drawn of the leader of the attack. [break][break]

"This was the man who confronted you and me on the stage and gave orders to the other Rockets. We're conducting a search through our databases, along with Interpol's, to identify him." [break][break]

Gunner handed the paper to Kyrenai. [break][break]

"Considering your job requires you to familiarize yourself with threats to Miss Livy, do you recognize him from before the conference? Perhaps in association with other criminal activity?" the agent asked.
