For once, Gunner was torn between telling Mila the truth about the DRK Triad and keeping it from her. In the past, he had no problem telling her when a topic of conversation was confidential, but enough civilians knew about the interdimensional group thanks to past encounters. [break][break]

Not only that, but his gut told him they would show up again before too long. [break][break]

"I'll tell you later, after you've rested," he decided, frowning. "The information might be too much after what you've just gone through." [break][break]

It was time to change the topic. [break][break]

"The hospital is going to keep you overnight to make sure your vitals are stable, but they told me you can leave in the morning. I can take you back to your apartment. Are you going to be okay by yourself, or do you want me to stay with you tonight?"

"Yes, he is," Gunner confirmed, lacing his fingers together. "The investigation into his identity and whereabouts are ongoing. Any information you might have about him or his group would be invaluable." [break][break]

All of Eddie's answers indicated that he did not have prior connections to Team Rocket, but there was always the possibility that he was fooled. The crime syndicate had infiltrated Hoenn at large, with criminals masquerading as innocent civilians. [break][break]

That was what happened with Elisabeth Fiorelli, Naomi Sato, and Zev Harcourt, after all, and they were only known thanks to their high profiles on the battlefield as Avatars. [break][break]

"Did any of the other terrorists seem familiar to you—maybe from encounters with strangers in public? A coffee shop, your favorite pizza place, maybe?" Gunner asked, continuing the interrogation.

Gunner saw the desperation in Gideon's face that accompanied his exclamation. It was natural that the elder Graves wanted to believe the student he'd come to know. The more he thought Nomi capable of harm, however, the less likely he would seek her out and put himself in real danger. [break][break]

Or so Gunner hoped. [break][break]

"Yeah, sure," was all the younger Graves said, before turning and exiting the room. [break][break]

Only when he was in the kitchen did he realize he still held the crushed note in his fist. He tossed it into the trash can when Gideon wasn't looking, hoping that was the last time his brother heard from Team Rocket.

"I'm familiar with it," he said to Yuina. His department had been blind copied on the invitation, for their own reference. [break][break]

He resumed his questions, finally getting into the meat of the interrogation. "Did you discuss the invitation or the conference with anyone between when you received the email and the appointed day? Friends, colleagues, or maybe even strangers?"

Gunner listened to Eddie's story with a neutral expression. He imagined with ease the way Navy might have inspired Eddie—likely over a couple bottles of mead and beer, if Gunner knew the Elite Four at all. [break][break]

Between Navy and Kyle, Eddie had solid connections to the League. Nothing suspicious stood out to the agent, so he switched his line of questioning. [break][break]

Opening the folder on the table, he removed a piece of paper: a composite sketch of the terrorists' leader. Gunner had it made mere hours after the attack. [break][break]

"Do you recognize this man?" he asked Eddie, sliding the paper over.

Gunner met Eddie's bitter disappointment with a grim expression, his lips flattening into a thin line. "That's why it's important for us to get to the bottom of this attack and hunt them down. We can't let them get away with such atrocities." [break][break]

Returning to the interrogation, he decided to swerve away from Eddie's security background, or lack thereof. [break][break]

"Your records do indicate that you recently enlisted in the Hoenn military. Which branch? And what prompted this decision, considering you aren't a Hoenn native?" Gunner asked. [break][break]

It wasn't unheard of for foreign nationals to join the Hoenn military, considering the precedent set by prominent individuals, such as MATIAS SILPH and Eva Morales. The region was desperate enough to allow it, even if the paperwork and bureaucracy involved was a nightmare to navigate.

TFW PRELUDE: PETALBURG SCENARIO A-1

gunner's curry entry

THREAD SUMMARY:
Together with jack wainwright, Gunner evacuates Petalburg General Hospital after receiving intel about an imminent airstrike. Unfortunately, the airstrike hits before the two men can get all patients and staff to a safe distance. Surrounded by the injured and dead, Gunner's PTSD triggers; he snaps, killing several Rocket grunts using the power of his Sygna Suit.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?:
Gunner's trauma from the Kanto War has been a recurring motif in his threads, even if it's not always referenced; it always informs the choices he makes and the feelings on which he acts. However, never before has a thread brought the trauma to the surface in such a visceral way.

On top of that, this thread finally allows me to depict Gunner as the "dark paladin" trope I created him to embody. He is righteous and lawful, he protects the innocent and defends his home... but he is also hateful and vengeful, unable to see that the horrors he inflicts upon his enemies are the same ones they inflict upon those he wishes to protect.

Thank you to Skyline for this amazing opportunity to show Gunner in this manner! I always enjoy bouncing off your excellent writing. ❤️

Tired. Gunner could relate to the sentiment. It was the sort of exhaustion not even a full night's sleep could dispel, for it sank into one's bones and settled there like a parasite. [break][break]

"Don't burn out on us, though," he said to Greyson, knowing he himself teetered on that knife's edge with his own work. It was a reminder as much as a request. "We need you in your best shape." [break][break]

Backup arrived to haul the captured grunts and their stolen goods into separate vehicles. Gunner recalled his Pokémon into their respective capsules and turned to the Elite Four. [break][break]

"Good work tonight. I'll see you around." [break][break]

Maybe in battle.

"I'm obligated to inform you that this conversation will be recorded, for the purpose of the investigation," he said, placing it within easy reach on the nearest flat surface. [break][break]

"Now… Miss Black, if you could please state, for the record, your name and relationship with PENELOPE LIVY."

Once again, Eddie's answers lined up with his residence information and employment history on file. The encounter with kyle lopez, however, was new and unexpected. [break][break]

It was also irrelevant. Kyle was dead, and all roads from him pointed only to his support of the League as a governing body. His record showed, time and time again, how often he fought with Team Rocket. [break][break]

The victims at the conference would be alive now if Lopez were still with us, Gunner thought darkly, having heard of the resurrection powers of which Ho-oh's Avatar was capable. Yet Kyle hadn't been able to save even himself. [break][break]

Dismissing those thoughts, Gunner resumed the interrogation. "And how long have you been working in security? Do you have any prior history in the field?"

Gunner knocked on Kyrenai Black's front door, unsure whether she was home or not. He had pulled her address from the civilian database, but outside of their brief interactions acting as security for PENELOPE LIVY, he had no way of contacting her. [break][break]

Thankfully, she was home. The smile he offered her matched the professionalism of his attire: a bespoke suit and tie. [break][break]

"Good afternoon, Miss Black. I'm sorry to drop by unannounced like this, but I'm in charge of the investigation into the incident at the conference a few days ago," Gunner said. "Do you mind if I ask a few questions?"

"When you came to Hoenn, did you already have any connections with any individual or organizations in the region?" the agent asked. "If not, who or what were your first contacts here after arriving?"
