Gunner entered Elise Calcifet's office at the Galarian Embassy, ushered inside by a secretary. Dressed in a bespoke suit and tie and accompanied by his Umbreon, he exuded a sobering sense of professionalism. [break][break]

When an agent of the Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism paid a visit, there was often little reason to celebrate. [break][break]

"Good afternoon, Ambassador Calcifet," he greeted the young woman, recalling their first encounter at a book club, of all places. Their meeting now contrasted that one in every way. "Thank you for taking the time to meet with me." [break][break]

He stepped up to offer a firm handshake, then the small talk required of polite society. [break][break]

"I know it's only been a few days since the attack, but how are you feeling?"

It had been a few days since the incident of the conference being interrupted by Rocket…with so many civilians there injured or killed from the attack. When the familiar presence of Gunner Graves enters her office in the Galarian Embassy courtesy of her secretuary ushering him there, the business suit clad ambassador takes the man’s hand to shake it when he prompts her to.[break][break]

“Good afternoon to you too, Mr. Graves.” She exudes a lot more confidence in herself than the last year, a far cry from how much she was the quiet and meek young woman when she first took on her cousin’s position and prior to that. Royal grace is apparent in the way that she tries to act on her capacity as the royal Galarian ambassador to Hoenn. [break][break]

Small talk came after the handshake where Gunner asks her a question on recovering from the event that day.[break][break]

“I am doing well, thank you.” Her answer came with a little nod while the darkness of her trauma of dealing with the Charizard still lingered freshly in her mind. “But I am very worried for the old man that Noel Parker and I helped together. He must have been in a lot of pain from the poison.”

The old man Elise mentioned numbered among the injured taken into League custody. Originally, Gunner thought nothing of it; it was only right for the League to provide medical assistance to those injured during a terrorist attack. But days had passed since then, and he hadn't seen or heard any news about them. [break][break]

"Rest assured that the old gentleman and others injured during the attack are being taken care of," Gunner said, hoping that the smile he offered Elise was reassuring enough for her. [break][break]

He took a seat opposite her and took out his phone. [break][break]

"Do you mind if I ask you a few questions about the incident? The conversation will be recorded for the sake of the investigation into what happened."

Thankfully, Gunner assures the diplomat that the old man she and Noel helped and the others were being taken care of by doctors. “Thank goodness that everyone else is alright. I would have been beside myself if I failed to save him.” She smiles too in a reminder that war was coming too and there would be even more people to protect from the war’s fires. [break][break]

With the agent onto the business of asking if he could get some answers from her on the incident, the Galarian ambassador nods. “Yes, I won’t mind if you ask me a few questions on the incident at the conference.” Any information that she could remember from the attack could help Gunner too, given that he’s there to make sure people are safer next time.[break][break]

At the little corner of her office, Sadako the Froslass works in fussing over the arrangement of Galarian flowers in the vase on the table.

After starting the recording, Gunner balanced his phone on the arm of his chair. Then he leaned back, folding his hands in his lap and propping one ankle up on the opposite knee. [break][break]

"First, please state your name for the record, and describe how you heard about the conference in Slateport," he said, keeping his tone even and professional. [break][break]

The first part of an interrogation was always the same: establishing the baseline with pertinent facts. Afterward, it was important to prod and poke where one saw weakness. As such, Gunner observed Elise's facial expressions and demeanor like a hunting Braviary.

Like a professional, the male agent makes his posture into a professional one and starts the recording. He tells her to state her name for the record and to give her answer of how she heard about the conference in Slateport. A breather question since she still remembered the day that the councilwoman did extend an invite to her. [break][break]

“My name is Elise.” Her composure is calm like the composed nature of the Queen of Galar when Edelynn II speaks to an audience in the throne chamber. “I heard of the conference when the councilwoman extended an invite to me.” Her second answer to Agent Graves’ question came since it was what he’ll need for the first part of the recording.[break][break]

She’ll wait for the agent to give more questions to ask her. In the back of her mind, there were memories of the Slateport conference that were a bit more vivid and those were the ones that she recalls.

Gunner nodded. It did not surprise him to learn that the Galarian ambassador had received a personal invitation from PENELOPE LIVY. Without a doubt, Elise's presence at the conference expressed support for the League government and Penelope's words. [break][break]

"And after you received the invitation, did you speak about the event with anyone? Friends, family, or even strangers you interact with regularly?" the agent asked. "And if you did, could there have been the possibility of unknown persons eavesdropping on your conversation and learning about the event that way?" [break][break]

He knew that Elise's cousin was none other than Remiel Calcifet, a former admin of Team Rocket. Gunner did not want to rule out the possibility that Remiel had leaked the event's details to his former colleagues, despite how much the nobleman claimed to regret his criminal associations.

Gunner gives his second question where he wanted to know if she talked about her coming to the Slateport conference with any of her family, friends, or anyone else she knows. She had only talked about it with a family member, her eldest cousin that she had treated like a 'big brother' to her.[break][break]

“I talked about it a bit with my cousin, but no one else. He wanted me to be safe since I was a political figure for Galar.” She remembers well that Remiel had cautioned her in going to an event like this without her guard while the ambassador began to answer Gunner’s other question. “And I think there may have been a possibility of someone in a third party that eavesdropped on our conversation at the embassy when Remiel stopped by, but I assumed there will be a lot of people there at the day of the conference.”[break][break]

While she didn’t have her personal guard accompany her there, her Pokemon acted as an entourage for her when they were called from their Pokeballs.

Gunner imagined that dozens of employees worked at the Galarian embassy, if not a hundred. Considering Remiel's recent association with Team Rocket, the chance that other employees at the embassy had some kind of connection to the terrorist organization was high. [break][break]

Unfortunately, the nature of embassies made his job more difficult. They were, technically, the soil of their homeland; Gunner's authority as a government agent did not apply to them. [break][break]

Keeping his expression neutral, he asked, "I imagine background checks and thorough interviews are conducted for everyone who's employed at the Galarian embassy, yes? To ensure that they don't have any criminal ties?"

The embassy was the soil of the United Kingdom of Galar and a Hoennian agent would have a difficult time with trying to do background checks on the dozens of staff at her embassy. This was the job of her secretary when Lucia had done background checks on potential employees and Elise had gotten those checks from the blonde woman when she asks her to.[break][break]

Diplomacy between both Galar and Hoenn was a delicate thing. She is responsible for everything that her country stands with, including Galar’s stance with being on the side of the League rather than Rocket. Remiel’s former assocation with Rocket can be troubling if the government of Hoenn did not trust its ambassador on her own loyalty to the League.[break][break]

“Yes, my secretary does the background checks when she does her interview with each potential staff member.” The royal ambassador calmly replies when the agent asks his question about the checks themselves. “In going over the checks with her, she and I ensure that there is no criminal ties…although, I had found it concerning that some of the embassy’s staff from Remiel’s time in office were formerly Rocket when I questioned them. I imagine they had defected along with the former ambassador when he cut ties with the organization.”

Elise's admission about some of the embassy staff floored Gunner. If it were up to him, he'd have had them fired and then arrested by the Galarian government for criminal activity. [break][break]

He stared at the ambassador for a long moment before finally remembering to compose himself. "Are you saying that some of your current employees are defectors?" he asked, hoping she would say otherwise. [break][break]

That she had actually done what he'd have done, in reality instead of in the hypothetical. [break][break]

"And if not, have all of them gone through the Amnesty Program, as your cousin has?" Gunner continued, frowning. "I don't think citizens of Galar have to, necessarily—our laws obviously don't apply to foreign nationals—but I would think they'd at least agree as a show of good faith."

Ever since her capture by Rocket, the reveal that her cousin had betrayed the very organization he worked for had brought a rift. He didn’t tell her and he surely didn’t want to. That was not information that the prince would share with her when she’s a family member.[break][break]

But it had gotten out to her now. Clearly, he had went through with the Amnesty program that the Head Ranger had set up with his help.[break][break]

“Yes, it’s unfortunate to say that my current employees are defectors from Rocket.” Even if they were initially Rocket and they had joined into terrorist causes, those people were still her people. Her’s and Remiel’s people. “But I will say that they have been going through the Amnesty Program in the same vein as my cousin. I have good belief that they will be able to turn over a new leaf in a sense by atoning here.”

Gunner's mouth pressed into a thin line at Elise's undesirable admission. He wanted to admonish her for being incredibly naïve, but it was not his place to do so. He had visited on good terms to conduct an investigation, and accusing the ambassador of childish hope was likely to backfire. [break][break]

"In that case, I think it would be prudent to set up interviews with those individuals on your staff," he said, "just to be sure they are atoning, as you put it." [break][break]

Switching gears, he removed a folded piece of paper from his jacket pocket and unfolded it before handing it to Elise. On one side was a composite sketch of the leader of the terrorist group based on Gunner's own testimony of the attack. [break][break]

"Have you seen this man before? Do you have any idea who he could be?" he asked Elise.
