Somehow, miraculously, his and Gunner Graves' parents had been spared from the destruction spurred on by Mt. Chimney's partial collapse.[break][break]

The outskirts of their acreage had seen some damage, but the main house was untouched. Even still, GIDEON GRAVES found himself lingering in his old bedroom after checking in with his parents, stuck in an odd headspace where thoughts of the past and worries for the future intermixed.[break][break]

From his creaking wooden desk chair, he stared out the window at a sky darkened by ash and soot.

"Gideon, are you up here?" Gunner called out as he climbed the stairs to the second floor of their childhood home. Wooden floorboards creaked beneath his feet. [break][break]

Like his brother, Gunner had arrived to check on their parents following the incident at Mt. Chimney. After surveying the damage to their property, he'd arranged for local services to help remove the debris. Their parents were getting older, after all. [break][break]

Peering into Gideon's old bedroom, Gunner found the elder Graves sitting at the desk inside. Gunner stopped short, lingering in the doorway. [break][break]

"Hey, Dad wants to know what you want for dinner. We're doing takeout since he and Mom are still pretty shaken," he said.

“In here.” Gideon called back, his attention snapping from the view outside his window and to the doorframe of his old bedroom. Within moments Gunner Graves appeared, stopping short from entering.[break][break]

“I’m fine with anything. Why not that local Johtoan place they like?” The professor suggested, sounding somewhat distant. Dinner had been the last thing on his mind.[break][break]

“How bad was the damage, by the way?” He asked, knowing the younger Graves brother was the one to survey the property while Gideon himself stayed behind to comfort his parents.

"Johtonian sounds good," Gunner agreed, nodding. [break][break]

He took a few steps from the bedroom to lean over the staircase bannister and yell Gideon's suggestion down to their father. Then the younger Graves returned to lingering in the elder's doorway. [break][break]

"Not too bad, actually. Someone will be coming over tomorrow to clean out ash from the gutters and show Mom and Dad's Pokémon how to keep it clean for the next several days." He couldn't imagine having to do such a dangerous task without helpful Water-types. [break][break]

"There were some boulders and smaller debris, but nothing too difficult to remove. I think there'll be some Fighting-types breaking up the biggest ones, and then they'll all be swept away." [break][break]

Gunner shook his head. "Considering the eruption, I'm surprised the house itself wasn't damaged." [break][break]

Or that their parents hadn't gotten hurt.

The elder Graves brother mutedly nodded along as the younger spoke, his eyes still on the smoking volcano seen through the window.[break][break]

It was an omen of things to come. Or at least, that's what it felt like to GIDEON GRAVES. The region was changing. More and more disastrous events kept happening year after year. And now? Even someone like Naomi Sato had been dragged into the conflict.[break][break]

"...Gunner." Gideon eventually spoke, completely pivoting their conversation to finally speak on what was preoccupying him. [break][break]

"I need to show you something and I need you to be honest with me." His eyes had grown hard as he spoke. Serious, unrelenting.[break][break]

From his coat pocket he retrieved the notification of absence that had been left on his desk by Naomi Sato. Extending the letter toward Gunner Graves, the professor solemnly urged, "Tell me what you know. Everything."

Gunner knew that tone of voice. The somberness that governed his demeanor turned even graver as Gideon's gaze hardened. It was not a look Gunner often saw in his older brother, but he knew what it meant. [break][break]

When Gideon extended the folded paper to him, he expected the worst. And considering the letter's contents, it may as well have been. [break][break]

When Gunner finished reading, he met his brother's unrelenting stare with one of his own. When he spoke, his voice was steely. Determined. If Gideon wanted the truth, he would hear the truth. [break][break]

"The terrorist known as Naomi Sato was seen working in concert with a known Team Rocket operative. The same one who attacked you, in fact." [break][break]

"Councilwoman Livy and I fought them together several weeks ago. Unfortunately, Sato and her accomplice escaped."

GIDEON GRAVES wasn't sure what he'd expected to hear. Part of him wanted an explanation that exonerated Naomi Sato of all the crimes she'd been accused of committing, however farfetched the notion was. But he knew. [break][break]

This wasn't some medieval fantasy, after all. No ghostly memory of an altered Galar. This was Hoenn, and things tended toward the worst here.[break][break]

"...I see." The mention of Elisabeth Fiorelli came as a hurtful surprise; a pang of haunted remembrance shot through his chest, unaddressed. Instead of focusing on her, however, Gideon continued asking about Naomi.[break][break]

"And is what she said true? That the papers are lying about what she's done?"

Of course, Gideon had to ask that question. Any normal person would. And Gunner, who was so practiced at lying to his brother, found himself falling into his old habit. [break][break]

To protect his family. [break][break]

In a terse and hateful voice, he said, "No." [break][break]

Technically, the HBIC had not found evidence of Naomi Sato committing the crimes they claimed she had perpetrated. But to Gunner, that did not matter. When he recalled the encounters he'd survived in the Giant Chasm, at the Silent Icelands, and on Mt. Pyre, his conviction only grew stronger. [break][break]

For years, live footage from Kanto played through his nightmares. The screams, the bodies, the phone call—he'd never be able to erase them from his memory. [break][break]

"She tried to kill me, Gideon. She used her Avatar powers on me. Not only that, but on a Council member!" The letter crumpled in Gunner's shaking fist. [break][break]

He was willing to do much more than lie to prevent the same fate from befalling Hoenn.

Naomi Sato? Kill someone?[break][break]

"She'd—" Never, he wanted to say — so, so desperately. But doubt creeped in at the edges of his convictions. He would have said the same thing about Elisabeth Fiorelli way back when, too, had there not been indisputable proof of her connections to ROCKET.[break][break]

Someone was lying. And there were no good options as to who. GIDEON GRAVES wanted to believe his little brother for the sake of their relationship... but also wanted to trust Naomi, too, if only so her actions could be redeemed. [break][break]

Gideon sighed and rubbed his face with one hand, clearly conflicted. Conveniently, the front doorbell rang that same moment to announce the arrival of their takeout and the end of the conversation.[break][break]

"Dinner's on. We can... talk more later. Let's put a pin in it for now."

Gunner saw the desperation in Gideon's face that accompanied his exclamation. It was natural that the elder Graves wanted to believe the student he'd come to know. The more he thought Nomi capable of harm, however, the less likely he would seek her out and put himself in real danger. [break][break]

Or so Gunner hoped. [break][break]

"Yeah, sure," was all the younger Graves said, before turning and exiting the room. [break][break]

Only when he was in the kitchen did he realize he still held the crushed note in his fist. He tossed it into the trash can when Gideon wasn't looking, hoping that was the last time his brother heard from Team Rocket.
