But it was still kinda cute.

The next words out of the stranger’s mouth do, however, force his lips to bend into a smile.

“‘Bussin’?” he parrots, in an attempt at mimicking the accent, exactly, one eyebrow lifting incredulously. “Ah doon’t--,” he’s trying to fight back laughter, his own brogue leaking in thickly in his lapse of control-- "Ah'm-- what does that mean in this context, ah'm sorry?” It isn’t mocking or derisive-- instead, something far simpler, an innocent amusement born out of perplexion.

From a little ways off Phage burbles in alarm, the little Duosion’s green body flying like a snotball shot from a stuffed nose as something big and purple oozes along behind him. Phage does a lap around Fox, peeking out from behind his back, before leveling a psyshock at the Sliggoo.

Fox tosses a Pokeball at the stunned slug before it can bounce back. “Thank you fer using me as a meat shield, you bloody coward.”

[attr="class","samjermain"] hops to quite quickly and leaves little room for Fox to doubt her competency. The ancient-seeming Carracosta quickly calls the Corsola to order with a noise he thinks maybe the earth produced when it was forming.

With great, ponderous steps, the beast makes his way to deeper water and dips to sluice through it, his blonde compatriot thrusting her fist to the sky in a victorious gesture that all the Corsola attempt to copy. It goes down the line, like a game of telephone, and each little hunk of coral pulses once skyward before diving into the water.

Like a hoard of pink popcorns, they are off, Inari allowing the littler ones to clamber on top of her shell as she, too, sinks to her chest in the sea, and begins to follow the daisy-chain of Corsola.

Maacah waits up for Fox to loop an arm around him before he’s barking excitedly and pulling his trainer through the water. It’s cold but refreshing. After a bit, Fox pushes off of his Spheal and grabs onto the rim of Inari’s shell.

“So what made you take this mission?” Fox asked, calling up over the bubbling, splashing group of Corsola as he let Inari drag him easily through the surf.

Lavaridge Town was one of the only places in the region where things carried on as normal.

Its propensity for warmth meant people flocked to it. Fox had to weave in and out of the crowd that gathered at the foot of the mountain, waiting for the gondola. He stopped and bought an overpriced bottle of water and energy bar at the gift shop then struck out for route 112.

The cycling road was quiet.

It was an eerie silence. Like something was turning the space inside out. The cycling road was never quiet. But it had been raining for the better part of three days, and when it was warm enough, thundering as well. The temperature had dropped severely over the last 24 hours and now everything was encrusted in an opaque sheeting of ice.

Fox frowned at the early spring blossoms encrusted in frost. Hopefully, they would be hardy enough to hold on and continue to grow when things finally warmed up… whenever that would be.

He trekked on through the silence, Maacaah rolling along at his side.

The ground shifted strangely under Fox’s feet. He held out an arm for to pause. No matter what their ranking, Fox’s expertise in guerilla warfare and time in the bush gave him the edge in these sorts of close quarters.

Complaints of erratic behavior from both people and Pokemon were filtering in from large swathes of the countryside. Many League scientists, Fox amongst them, ventured the rifts were having something to do with the episodes. Given his and Lars’ experience with the Deep Sea rift at the center of Granite Cave, they’d been dispatched to deal with the encounters from this part of Hoenn.

This far from the rift things appeared normal… but Fox knew better than most that not everything was always as it seemed.

That didn’t mean he wasn’t good at fighting, though. He’d singlehandedly fought off in the pit of the Deep Sea rift when the commander had been envenomated by a Nihilego. And that had been even more difficult because he couldn’t hurt the guy.

Or shouldn’t hurt him, at least.

His shoulder leaned against the cold stone, gaze flicking across the way to the man in question. Within this building there would be a veritable swarm of ingrates, Rockets and simple ruffians alike, all needing to be subdued and taken in for questioning to discern their ties to these illicit bloodfights that were sweeping the nation.

Or that the League had just taken notice of, Fox figured, but still. His job was to bring them down.

“How do you want to do this?” he asked, voice quiet in the dark alley, the sky a dreary gray far above them.

Fox fixes the head ranger with a look that could kill.

“At least there,” he said, his voice gone cold, “I know who my friends are.”

But he couldn’t go back. Physically, because the dome was keeping them in, and also--

Well.

He stabbed through another piece of trash and deposited it in his bag.

“‘Stuck’ seems a very mild way of putting it,” he mumbles, after the silence has dragged on too long. “What did you do to be put on trash duty, anyway?”

Lars looked rough. His eyes kept swimming, like he was having trouble deciphering the middle distance.

One side of Fox’s mouth dips in a questioning frown.

“Commander?” he asks, genuinely confused, keeping his tone civil; he’s prepared, though, with the weight on the balls of his feet, knees bent. “Or-- your name?”

Lars clearly isn’t in control of his mental faculties because he comes flailing at Inari and Fox both. The Blastoise growls, knocking the Head Ranger back with a warning push.

“I don’t have the right to call you by your name?” Fox continues, eyes flicking up to where Phage had disappeared into the depths of the cavern. “Do you realize how pompous that sounds, Laurence?”

A squeak of success rings out and Phage comes filtering back, one long tentacle trailing behind him-- and behind it floating a line of deep purple ichor.

“Good job. Trade out with Inari. Restrain the commander but don’t hurt him.”
[break][break]
Phage burbles the affirmative and floats round to the front of the Blastoise, who turns her shell to the Duosion and the rampaging Head Ranger. Phage keeps Lars at bay with protect.

Fox pulls Inari’s arm towards him, squeezing the limb to get a vein to pop. “I’m going to use you to make an antivenom,” he explained, quickly, and quietly, manipulating the severed tentacle to reveal the tiny hypodermic needle hidden within. “You shouldn’t feel much. But your antibodies will help Lars fight the-- the venom.”

He slid the needle into Inari’s vein, squeezing the tentacle to get it to pump, then tossing it aside and covering the venipuncture.

It’s small and off-white, perched at the top of a rising green stem, still some time off from blooming. Soon, though, this horrendous, unnatural winter would end, and spring would return to Hoenn; Flabébé and Combee and Beautifly and all manner of pollinating creatures would return the region to lush and flourishing.

He made a note in his notebook and marked some measurements, standing to stretch side to side and relieve the pressure on his aching knees.

A sharp rise of his eyebrows is the only sign he gives of startling as a loud voice disturbs the orchid blooms.

“How’s that working out for you?” he asks, a beat of irritation turning his voice sickly-sweet, calling across the damp meadow.
