He tried to recall if he remembered seeing her in… in the Hammerlocke he’d ended up in.

“Hold a moment,” he would begin once he’d found his brain cells and pulled out the notebook (tome) he always travelled with. While most of the pages were normal, lined paper there was a point where it had suddenly become parched paper, with scratchy (yet visible) handwriting.

“…just wanted to check, were you in a Hammerlocke where the Calyrex died?” he continued, not realizing that his own shadow was starting to act up—down on the ground it looked normal, however there was a ‘shadow’ Jack already being made from the seeping shadows that were coalescing in a pool by his feet.

“…because, you may think I’m stupid for saying this, but… I was sent to a Galar where… where he ended up dying,” he would continue as he tilted his head in the Calyrex’s direction.

The moment he heard the familiar voice, he turned to face her and was about to nod, before—

“Wha—” he would remark; not in her direction but towards a particular Pokémon that accompanied her. No, wait, hold the fuck up. It couldn’t be…

“…the king from Galar is with you?!” he would exclaim once he’d managed to find his voice a few seconds later, outright gawking at the Calyrex that accompanied her.

There was nothing else to it.

Just pure, abject shock.

Switching gears at the very last second, the Kommo-o halted himself before letting loose another attack—and saw that they’d done it.

They’d actually manage to confuse one of them away from the horde!

“Alright, now!” he would continue as he popped the earplugs out and pointing forward. “Get ‘em!”

Hopefully the incoming Solar Beam would—well, the incoming Grass-type attack bounced off the Kommo-o’s scales, and boy was he surprised to see what exactly had happened.

Damn.

A Dragon Claw attack would then lash out at the Bonnet; and the two would then tangle in some kind of strange ‘dance’ where the Kommo-o would attack, and the Bonnet would lash back—until the Kommo-o finally backed away after dodging the Rage Powder and he’d managed to chuck a specialized Pokéball meant to be taken out on a test run.

“Whew… that was… god, that’s so much pollen,” he would cough, hacking for a few moments because oof, the stench of the pollen that the rest of the Bonnet horde had released hung thick in the air.

He then covered the bottom half of his face before continuing, “Hey, at least we managed to get one…”

The moment the loud sounds that his Kommo-o had caused sufficiently caught the suspicious mushrooms’ attention, he knew he had to move fast.

(Okay, wait, which one of the two abilities was it again?!)

Crossing his fingers, he then watched as the horde—no, stampede of Brute Bonnet headed their way; but he knew the Kommo-o had a way of dealing with them—another loud, rippling Clanging Scales attack would send them into disarray; while some of the mushroom-like Pokémon… were they Pokémon? Maybe—would lash out with alternating Thrashing attempts or, worse, firing up a Solar Beam since it was now a one-charge, one-blast attack!

“Yikes!” he would yelp as the Kommo-o waited for the flames to start surprising them from the opposite direction.

They needed to isolate at least one of the Bonnets to haul them back for further study…

+ Kommo-o used Clanging Scales again and is now drawing the ire of the Brute Bonnet horde!

Hopefully, they would be able to isolate at least one of the mushroom-looking Pokémon and bring them back for further information and studies—the eggheads in the Pokémon League’s science department would always go ‘ooh, shiny’ whenever anything strange or fascinating coming from this place was brought up to their little hidey-hole labs.

Now that the two had separated for the moment, he would look over at his Kommo-o, before popping in the second earplug and then mentally crossing his fingers as he made the clapping gesture—just like they’d practiced.

(Because the first few times he’d done this, without earplugs might I add, he’d gone temporarily deaf for a few days!)

It wouldn’t take too long before the first of a series of Clanging Scales would ripple through the area.

Even with the earplugs in, he could still feel the sound waves rippling across the surface of his skin as the Kommo-o stomped forward; eager to meet at least one of these strange things in mortal kcombat!

The sudden and abrupt switching from electric to draconic power definitely threw the Unown into a loop—how was this white cat supposed to know an attack like that?!

“Keep going!” he would yelp, watching and waiting nervously before his companion would eventually return; little Charcadet having evidently ‘smoked’ the tent (in more ways than one) while the Zeraora would continue on the rampage with Dragon Hammer once more; they could let loose now while they knocked away the rest of the remaining Unown that were still hanging around the encampment!

Moment he saw his companion, he whistled sharply.

“Come on, let’s get the hell outta here!” he would call, before turning tail and being followed by the thunder catto Zeraora, hot on his heels.

They, at the very least, came to disrupt whatever encampment had been set up out here.

“Yeah, those… even the name is suspicious, and I mean that for the actual Unovan version that exists right here!” he added with a cackle.

Now that they both had earplugs, he would fish his own pair out and pop one of them in, before turning to see the incoming phalanx of Brute Bonnet (not that he knew what they were called) before his Kommo-o flexed their fists.

“Okay, so since they’re hyperfocused on marching this way, we can catch them by surprise with his loudest attack. That would be either Boomburst or Clanging Scales, you take your pick,” he began as he laid out the quick, rudimentary ‘counterattack’ plan.

“Then, while they’re all confused and trying to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, well, if your Houndoom’s up to it we can smoke them out and away from here so we can call for reinforcements to rebuild the base after we secure the area.”

Did he just draw on years of experience herding sheep with that tactic? Who knows?!

“Did any of that make sense?”

He thought he felt the ground rumbling—however, he put it off to the Zeraora who was literally zooming around like a wild pinball with their fists always crackling with electricity; lashing out and smashing into Unown that dared came across their mighty presence.

“You be careful! I’ll—rather, we’ll hold the line!” he nodded before the Charcadet had managed to get up and was now on the offensive as well.

Back over where they were, this time there would be incoming clods of dirt—as the Zeraora was unintentionally pulling a lot of the ire on them; the Unown would switch accordingly and lash out with another version of Hidden Power—this time, clods of dirt and stone!

“Oh, don’t think we’re just a one-trick pony,” he grinned like a deranged maniac as this time, the thunder catto came out screaming with a Dragon Hammer attack towards the attacking horde of Unown!

“We can gawk at them later, you realize they’re headed this way and we’re the only people left to… well, protect what’s left of this outpost!” he remarked as he squinted into the distance.

While they were indeed marching like a well-timed phalanx, fact of the matter was that they looked like… geez, what was up with these Pokémon that resembled the currently-existing counterparts anyway?!

“It doesn’t help that they kind of look like the suspicious mushrooms from Unova…” he would add as this time, he was accompanied by a Kommo-o who looked ready to tussle.

“I have an idea,” he would continue as he tilted his head towards his Kommo-o, “…however, it would involve a pair of earplugs. Do you have any on you?”

They quite literally fell for the trap hook, line and fucking sinker—

However, what the Unown did not realize was that they were dealing with a Zeraora who was blindingly fast—before some of the letter-shaped Pokémon began throwing balls of water (Hidden Power) after the Charcadet!

“…we fell for it, huh?!” he would exclaim, his eyes quickly looking around while his Zeraora sprang into action; because they were jumped on!

“Go, go!” he would urge the thunder catto on, and the white blur got to work; quickly firing up their Plasma Fists and smacking the closest bunch of levitating letters they could lay their paws on!

“See, the funny thing is—” he would trail off a few moments later before even more Unown started showing up.

“…why set out a trap for us if we’re not that special?!”
