Nikita turns to face the younger woman. His chuckle is an eerie sound—ghostly thin and as worn as the rest of him.“It stops one from being disappointed." There is a brief pause as he glances up a nearby path. “It’s the best way to ward off disappointment.” The detective responds after a moment. “At least where human stupidity is involved.”[break][break]

Yujin’s next statement draws a click of disapproval. His blade of a nose briefly crinkles with distaste. While he appreciated honesty—and detested niceties—it was always strange to have that turned on him. “The burden of having independent thought, I’m afraid.” That and the nighttime smells of his family as they burnt away like kindling.[break][break]

There is an awkwardness to him as he turns away. His mind is focused on the task ahead. [break][break]

As he stares at the crates, Nikita scoffs. The money is lit up by the low-hanging lights above. “Wars fought over glorified paper.” What a stupid concept. By this time, his cigarette is embers. He tucks the butt into his pocket. The detective is surprisingly self-conscious about his DNA. “It’s so pointless when you think about it.”

Reaching into a hidden compartment in his disguise’s jacket, he pulls out a small device. With gloves donned, he tucks it beneath the crate’s outer rim. “You’ll find the effort needed for a task is often proportional to its worth.” As the dark-haired man pulls back, a chill runs up his back. A true—very rare—smile appears.[break][break]

“Winters.” Though less corporeal than she remembers, the ghost dog’s mannerisms are still on point. He inclines his head with a rattle of bone.[break][break]

Straightening his collar, the man turns back to the storage area door. “There’s only one room Vinny was kept out of—” He sneers at his false identity. It is always a distasteful thing—playing a dimestore thug. “Top floor.” Though wan and tired, the gaunt man still had manners enough to pull the door open.

Only after seeing his trainer deposited on the couch did Winters relax. A burst of spectral power slammed the exterior door in place. The deadbolt turned in its place.

Nikita could not deny his embarrassment. The last time he needed someone’s aid to walk was the night his family died. Though he supposed that was not accurate. The firepeople were merely restraining him from digging barehanded through the rubble. At some point, he had burned his lips trying to give CPR to a pile of ash that had been his wife.

The laughter hurt. It made the world around him swirl. The movement further unbalanced his equilibrium. “You make it sound like I am a freshman on a bender.” Which he was not.

“Is that so?” Nikita murmured. He had never been a breakfast man. If he ate anything at all, it was wrapped in plastic and stuck by the door. “Perhaps you should teach it some manners.” [break][break]

As he pulled his hand away from his face, he was surprised to find it wet. And sweat was only part of it. Stupid emotions. The idea of letting Haoyu leave so soon was suddenly distasteful. Some sick part of him wanting to hold on to the man who kept twisting into Robin. Just to see that face for a little longer. Without the soot and smell of flesh. "Has Hoenn been treating you well?"

The questioning of his well-being earned a crimson glare. This girl’s loose tongue—her utter audacity00had almost done what countless criminals could not. It had almost robbed him of his life. “I am fine.” Nikita manages to croak out after a moment. The smell of coffee pervades his nostrils and gives his throat a bitter taste.

Nikita is certainly used to banter. He has exchanged barbs with terrorists like Cillian Quinn and dorian westcliff. But there is something entirely different about the barbs of a teenage girl. At the insinuation that he primps his hair, the detective scoffs. “I wash it, if that is what you mean.” While some might assume everyone did that, Nikita knew better. He had seen the results of poor hygiene a million times over.

A deep breath brings some calm to the reedy detective. “What a brat.” A hand lifts to pinch his nose. “Is there something you need?” The ballpoint pen now lies forgotten in his hand. “Or may I nurse my bruised ego in peace?” The dryness of his voice rivals the Asado Desert.

After confirming everyone arrived in one piece, the ghoulish hound closed the portal. In seconds, the tear between this world and the next had been erased. A bony jaw shifted as Winters turned to meet his partner’s gaze. “Stone.” There was still something off in his crimson eyes—a hint of madness that refused to fade.

As his feet touched the concrete path, Nikita could not resist a grunt of discomfort. While typically unaffected by teleportation, the added toxins made his head spin. The hand slung across Haoyu’s shoulder curled into a fist as he forced his eyes closed. With the toxins at play, his house shifts into something horrifying. Its top windows are the angry eyes of a revenant. As his toes bumped into his porch steps, the detective forces a foot to raise. It is just a foot off the ground, Sokolov.

Concerned, Detective Winters follows at his heel. His muzzle hovers just an inch or two behind his knees, ready to support his trainer if he trips.[break][break]

At the talk of toast, Nikita laughs. The sound is mirthless. “You have done more than enough.” A shaking hand reaches out to open the front door. There is a fingerprint lock as well as a numeric one. The beeps of punched numbers are slow and stilted. In front of his eyes, the numbers shift like irritated Arbok.

With a BEEP the door swings open. Inside is a surprisingly sterile home—it is cold and dark. “Just get me on the couch.”

A counterfeiting case is typically beneath his notice. It’s not very interesting, in truth. Motive? A simple case of greed, no doubt. How? Another innovation on what’s been tried before. Who? Well, that was what had encouraged him to tag along. The associate in question was connected to a rather large, familiar face. And, like a spider, he intended to follow the line to its center.

These false dollars had funded a large bombing, after all. And that, at least, could hold his attention.

Nikita approaches the ‘subtle’ guards at the gate, he offers up an uncharacteristically lazy wave. “Hey, Vinny! Who’s the hottie?” The taller of the guards asks. The man’s elbow collides with the investigator’s limbs—the lack of padding sharpening the gesture. He does not respond.

As their trap springs, Nikita reaches up to peel away his mask. This is his first visit to the warehouse without the weight of latex on his face. There is no longer a need for disguise.

The detective is content to let the young woman’s Bronzor do its work. His own Pokemon—a Houndstone—is already inside the location. With his help, he had sketched out a map of the area. “Thank you,” Nikita murmurs a few words to the Bronzong as he pushes past the fools at the front gate.

A hand reaches down to unload the guns at their size. For a moment, marks are visible on his inner arms. As is the almost gaunt appearance of the limb.

“I would wish them sweet dreams, but I shudder to think what that entails.” No doubt cartoonishly large breasts were involved. A cigarette finds its way to his mouth. Hopefully, the smell of ash would banish that of rotten fish.

“Come, Miss Ha.” Sharp eyes shift toward a lit door as he turns in the opposite direction. “This way.”

A dark chuckle emerges from between thin lips. “If you insist.” He did not think anyone in Rocket was his fan. These doubts would likely become a certainty when this encounter drew the dots together. It took a special sort of person to knock off some of the organization’s best-disguised agents. A real keen eye to peel apart layered masks to reveal the true monster underneath.

“A belief we share.” He sighs. Any hopes the one barking orders was one of the upper echelon were dashed. Many of them were only recently ascended to their positions. “But I would never accuse you.” He’s pacing back and forth now like a caged tiger. Memories of that night draw a tremble into normally rock-solid limbs. “The idiot did not even confirm their target was home.” And, while many things, he did not think Quinn was so incompetent.

The bullet sinks into the bird’s flesh. There’s a splatter of blood on the stone. But his aim is off and it goes through the meaty part of the Dodrio's neck. Then a wash of it as it jumps into the Whirlpool. As its Power Gem ends—the stone above teetering on a thread—it turns slowly to face the Dodrio. Just as the attack connects, it spits out a ball of concentrated toxins at the bird. It collapses bonelessly to the ground.

With a clatter of bones, Winters lands beside his trainer. His sockets turn toward the Eelektross. His jaw opens in a snarl as he prepares to attack. As the Dhelmise turns, the Houndstone shifts their attention to his trainer. “Go.” The man states simply as he brings another Pokemon into the fray. Another crack follows on the heels of the first.

The temperature plummets as the stone above them gives up the ghost. It comes crashing down—only a few pebbles signaling its fall. Frost now emerges in the air between them.

Aa mega evolved Glalie stares down the group before them. A glimmering barrier lies between Nikita and his would-be attacker. A virtual mountain of stone falls upon that protection before rolling harmlessly to the ground. Just as the shield falls, the air around them fills with the howl of a Blizzard.
