“Fans congregate in the strangest of places.” A hand reaches up to remove the mask. There is no point in wearing it now—it’s relatively useless in this place. And his identity is plain to see.

“You know—” The man’s normally cold tones are icy. “I had planned to do that.” He clicks his tongue with disapproval. “And, honestly, I had no intention of intervening with your little fascist club.” His own family was full of criminals, after all. His issue wasn’t with crime.

The crimson eyes that look back at Cillian are full of exasperation. He sighs—the gesture somehow not weighty enough for what came next. A normal man might have cried. But Nikita wasn’t one for emotional displays. “But then one of you Neanderthals blew my house up with my children inside.” Their bodies were only recognizable by the color of the fabric scraps left behind.

Though his voice doesn’t shake, there’s a passion in his normally flat eyes. A level of fire was typically only seen when the old hound was on the case. “So, unfortunately, Shady Acres will have to wait.” Was Cillian even involved? Certainly not. But that didn’t matter, did it? Glad for the clearer view and fresh air, Nikita’s eyes jump between his chess pieces. Your emotions are getting the better of you, Sokolov.

As the Whirlpool takes shape, the detective’s nose wrinkles. “Unfortunately, brainless jellyfish aren’t known for their creativity.” It was also not particularly well trained. He found it difficult to create a relationship with the nihilistic poison type. The UB draws back into the waves as the water closes in. As the Dodrio focuses its energy, the detective does the same. Let’s see who learns new tricks.

His gun bucks again, aiming for the back of one of the stupid bird’s heads. Then, his eyes catch on what’s going on above. That’s it. His eyes shift to the Nihelego behind the wall of water. “Power Gem.” The jellyfish fires upward, its aim seemingly in the opposite direction of what’s needed.

The hound sighs in relief as his attack connects. The fire glints in his eyes as the thrashing gives Anne some breathing room.The Hyper Beam is sent just off target, carving an angry rut into the stone behind it. “Winters, Play Rough.” It takes a dog a moment to catch on. But there’s almost a glimmer in his sockets. “Anne. U-Turn.”

With a tired noise, the Intelleon does as asked. A blur of green seems intent on returning her to her trainer’s belt. Before she makes it, she’s unconscious—spindly limbs now covered in new scars. Winters, meanwhile, unleashes a fairy-type beat down on the Aerodactyl. And, if it connects, the detective’s objective will become sickeningly clear.

All that fighting had loosened a giant tera crystal above. This attack, along with the Power Gem, aims to connect and literally bring the roof down.

While irritated by his butting in, Nikita does spare Winters a grateful glance. “I had pieced that together.” The detective’s words are filled with a hint of impatience—as if he’s a child waiting for the exciting part of the story. The fact that she had run away was not what interested him. That merely served as an appetizer for the main course.

Then, the Banette appeared. Though feigning indifference, Nikita does push his grandson behind him. The last thing he needed was for some specter to possess the boy. When the Pokemon speaks—the voice rather disconcerting—the detective’s crimson eyes narrow. It was as if someone had replaced the child with a puppet. And, unfortunately, it seemed reluctant to share anything interesting. “I would be alarmed if she did.” The dark-haired man is quick to reply.

He was a stranger asking extremely personal questions in a public place. It was good for her to be nervous. The ghost’s other comments were airily waved aside. “The pocket change is irrelevant. I only take cases that interest me.” Many a millionaire had come to his door to be turned away like paupers.

“I do not care whether they're related.” He just wished to confirm it for himself. “But your answers are much more revealing than hers.” It did not take a genius to draw a line between Rocket and the secrets in Paldea. At the talk of compliance, the man chuckles. It’s a dark, shadowy noise. “I know full well what they do.” But he’s brought many of them to an end with HBIC’s assistance. “Your threats will not garner compliance.” No, it just made him want to disembowel the case—spill its answers on the ground like a pile of steaming entrails.

“Humor me though.” There is a brief pause as he lights up a cigarette. It settles with a weighty familiarity into his yellow-stained fingers. “What price do you put on my grandson’s life?" If the ghost wanted the stalkers to have her, it’d have been done already.

Samuel, meanwhile, stares at the now listless girl with a concerned expression. “Lucia?” Each word makes him shudder. It sounds so wrong. The crimso neyes sliding over him just made it worse. He swallows and clings tighter to Blizz. Nikita looks scary. “Grandpa?”

Before them is one possible future. The city of Slateport lays in ruins. Smoke obscures the skies above, and the entire area smells faintly of smoke. Well, well. Isn't this charming? The detective does not immediately act. Instead, he begins by folding his arms across his chest. Crimson eyes roam the landscape as he contemplates the battle before him. [break][break]

Obviously, he has no plans to join the invading pests before him. As his hand drops to a Pokeball at his side—briefly impressed by the DRK Triad’s ability to mimic its real-life texture—Shalin proffers a warning. A simple nod serves as the way of reply. His hands press tightly against his virtual ears. Though it’s unlikely illusionary decibels will harm him, it is not something he wants to hear with. Certain senses are already flagging without the burden of ruptured eardrums.[break][break]

Grabbing for his own belt, the detective tosses a Pokemon of his own into the fray. The Glalie erupts in a burst of light, its blue eyes equal parts shrewd and unforgiving. “Are you prepared, Ignatius?” The ice type bows as it drifts toward the horizon. A gem in the band of Nikita’s smartwatch fills with light as a resounding CRACK! echoes across the landscape. A broken jaw is the price paid for mastery of Jack Frost himself.[break][break]

But it seems the virtual world is not too particular about the pain part. His friend seems not at all bothered by the sudden break.

“Blizzard, please.” With a pained shriek, the ice golem does as requested. A shrieking, howling blizzard sends many Rockets scrambling for shelter. And, there they stand when the Kommo-o’s jangling brings their towers down.

Thrashing in its grip, the water-type glares defiantly up at it. With a deep breath, she throws a Hydro Pump into its face, aiming to knock its face from the killing blow.

Things were getting out of hand. And, while he had plans, facing a fully empowered avatar rendered many of them useless. “You will not be getting that from me, Mister Quinn.” The benefit of all of those consultant fees? An infrared add-on to his mask shows the other man’s outline. Hoping the fog’s obscuring presence goes both ways, he makes a single gesture to his Houndstone. ’Get Anne.’ Those crimson eyes say.

An almost inaudible clink follows before the dog vanishes back into its portal. Moments later, it appears in the air behind the Aerodactyl. With a snarl, it summons a ball of violet fire and hurls it at the ancient beast.

Now, Nikita has only the nihilistic jellyfish to back him up. That and his gun. Though he doubts he will get a chance to reload if those bullets run out. When he shoots, he aims for the bird. “Trap them.” The Nihilego seems to come alive with a spinning burst of Toxic Spikes. At least its lack of a brain means one thing: it’s obedient.

The fact that Nikita had not yet stormed off was a testament to their bond. That and his current inability to properly distinguish up from down. “That is true of every situation.” The detective is quick to snap back. Even on that night, there was the small solace of his grandson’s survival. However, as time passes, some part of him believes that more burden than a benefit. “I learned what I needed to.” The talk of those marks slides crimson eyes irritably to the brick wall beside Robin-Haoyu. Only two of those were from this particular experiment. “It was worth it.”

At the talk of doctors, the detective’s brow rose. “I would not trust a doctor who’d allow it.” Besides, the amount of red tape involved would turn his tests into a migraine. There was a reason he abhorred governmental work. That and other people. Still, after a moment of reluctance, he accepts the presence of the arson investigator. Nikita inclines his head once as he pushes himself fully off the wall. He shakes his head to clear a strange tingling behind his eyes.

For a moment, he considers insisting that he is fine. Ushering the man to continue his night uninterrupted, but he knows it would be useless. “Let’s get this over with.” As he passes, the ghost dog gently bumps his snout against Haoyu’s knees. It is a sign of affection, if not a bit heavy. “Take us home, Winters.” The dog’s shadow turned to something Lovecraftian as tendrils bloomed. A hellish purple glow erupted as his claws tore a portal through the empty air.

Half leaning on the green-haired man, the detective made his way toward the portal. Through it, a two-story house is visible. “I would invite you for a drink, but—” His shoulders lifted in a shrug.

Nikita had not forgotten about his niece’s supposed arrival. He just thought it was a prank. Or, at most, a ludicrous idea his brother would shake off before getting to the airport. So, he’d fled that knowledge away in the same dusty folder where he stored the name of Santa’s reindeer. The alert from his motion sensor was marked as safe, likely by Barbara.

Simply telling his brother no should have been enough. Only an insane man would follow through.

By the time he arrived home, the spirit of vengeance had been usurped by a tired detective. One that had not bothered to check his phone. The blood-stained nitrile gloves had been destroyed in a burst of purple flames. Any evidence of his misdeeds was similarly disposed of. With another case tied up with a neat little bow, he thought of nothing but the cup of whiskey waiting upstairs.

Barbara had sighted the girl a few hours ago. A brow rose as she recognized the tuft of tow hair beneath the couch’s blanket. It was from some children’s show Samuel was obsessed with. AN eyesore that Nikita constantly stowed out of sight, only for his ward to discover it in the morning. “Zam.” With a soft smile, the Alakazam lifted the girl with a burst of telekinesis. A proper pillow was inserted beneath her head and the child’s cover swapped for another one. She ended the encounter with a soft kiss and tickle from her mustaches.

She even left a little platter of snacks for her. She’d prepare one of the spare bedrooms tomorrow. It was too late to wake up Master Samuel.

As he entered his home, the man was instantly struck by the sense that something was wrong. A hand slipped to his gun, now remembering the earlier false alarm from his sensor. His hand dropped to his gun as he pulled it from the holster. He did not notice Winters skeletal tail give a few sporadic wags.

Approaching the couch—the blanket out of place—he moved toward it. His eyes were like thunder, his expression a stormcloud. Then, as he would bark at the intruder, his entire body slouched forward. “Arceus.” The detective was almost disappointed it was not Elisabeth Fiorelli sleeping on his couch. “I’m going to kill him.” Perhaps he’d have welcomed @tempest. At the very least, he could shoot them. “I’m going to kill him.” He sank into his armchair with a heavy sigh. Grabbing a pillow behind him, Nikita indulged in uncharacteristic pettiness.

“Get up.” He threw it at her. His voice is equal parts cold and resigned. Then he’d, well, ask her father to take her back. But, somehow, he doubted that would end well. The pair were just as stubborn as he was. “You have a flight to catch.”

Nikita sipped at his drink with a lidded expression. Each syllable would be picked apart. A whole life solving cases lent even the most minuscule thing importance—aside from tantrums, of course. “And you did not tell them?” Honestly, this fool’s pains were partially self-inflicted. Certainly, he understood the psychologies involved were complex. The relationship between a parent and child was difficult to break without some violent or wearing occurrence. Like an explosion that destroyed your life in an instant.

“Do you like things the way they are?” Personally, Nikita would have made the man regret it. Dig up and document all of those things and bring him to heel like the unruly dog he was. But he had not been raised with a child’s worship of the man. His own parents were merely boring. A maths professor who gave up a worthy life to raise two little gremlins and a small-time member of a big-time crime family. “You reference him like a god.” Nikita shook his head. “You give the snake too much credit.”

“That would certainly be a place to start.” Trapped in that man’s web, it was difficult to see beyond it. And if he was as cunning as the boy claimed, he wouldn’t stop the young man. It was normal for a child to earn their own way, after all. Even his daughter wasted her summers slinging ice cream for hoards of little leaguers. The comment about coffee drew a raised brow. Perhaps a different type of abuse was at play. “The insomnia certainly explains one thing.”

The pigheaded stupidity. He would know.

Nikita does not spare the money another glance. It is not as if he is hurting for it. “I don’t think there is much pretending involved.” Those bruises were obvious enough, and the man had let his son dance outside with them in plain view. “Then, I have one question, Mr. Blackwell.” He sets his cup onto his plate as he closes his laptop.

A large amount of cash joins what is already on the table. A tip for the server—a substantial amount for a single cup of coffee. The laptop is slid back into the bag and locked in place.

A rodeo? Honestly. Unlike the hallucinatory judges, Nikita was unimpressed. All he saw was a packed field of dirt and some booking Tauros. It was a farce you saw at a hick county fair, not something that tested bonds. He wondered just who had the job of getting the clamps on the ride Pokemon balls before the fury erupted. The two dragons drew less scorn, their strategic displacement far more interesting than the rest.

The judgment of the inspectors was quickly brushed aside. No doubt they would also give a stick figure drawing ample applause. But the power spot held his gaze like a snake charmer’s flute. “It is not.” He says simply as he tries to discern any meaning behind its presence. “Interesting.” But, as soon as it appears, they are whisked away. A frustrating feeling the detective will soon come to despise.

As the child’s obedience is replaced by fear, Nikita sighs. He can feel a headache coming on. Dealing with tantrums was never his strong suit. They were not logical, and they rarely responded to proper solutions. Unfortunately, there was no Robin to hand the child off to. Two nicotine-stained fingers lift to pinch his nose.

Now, he wishes he had left pulling the rug until after he smoked a cigarette. That or turned away the instant he had his answer. Which was still a tantalizing option, in point of fact. But it’d also be putting the girl at risk. Taking a deep breath, he collects his thoughts. When he speaks, Nikita does his best to temper his exasperation. “I am Nikita Sokolov—Samuel’s grandfather.” He releases his grandson. The boy takes a few steps forward. One tiny hand lift in a calming gesture.

“I know he’s kinda—” Nikita coughed. “--kind of scary, but he won’t hurt you. He helps people!” The very idea that he’d hurt Lucia seems to offend the grandfather. Dark brows lowered above piercing, falcon-like eyes. Hero’s presence was almost immediately ignored. The Dunsparce was not worth his attention. His gaze grows almost hungry when Lucia speaks. Got you.

Apparently, the idiots did not trust him to find the girl. That or they merely wanted an alibi. “That is quite helpful, Lucia.” Perhaps he could get an address of where the incident took place. The fact that pressuring the girl would just make things worse did not occur to him. Emotional foibles to him—typically—were just wastes of time. An obstacle to be overcome, never coddled or acknowledged. “I will say—regardless of the lies they told—that they do seem to be married.” No doubt the man had been waiting just out of sight, eager to take the child.

He saw the signs of panic. Observation like that came naturally to him. “Now, now, calm down.” But it only made him want to push harder. “Put that snake away.” The answers were so close that he could taste them, like blood on downed prey. “Honestly. You act as if I tried to accost you.” He takes a deep breath. But that manic look in his eyes remains, like an addict who can scent a fix on the horizon. “I need to know where your real parents—”

Fortunately, his Houndstone chose that moment to step in. Unlike his human, Detective Winters quite enjoyed children. With a huff, he slams his skull into the back of his trainer’s leg. It makes him stumble. The pair’s “eyes” meet for a moment in a battle of wills. The human bends first. “My apologies. I think we have gotten off on the wrong foot.” What do children like? Candy? Sweets?

“Would you two like an ice cream?” Sammy relaxes as Blizz does the same. If he had eyes, Winters would be rolling him.

Nikita’s sigh is an airy, resigned thing. “Pity.” His skeletal shoulders lift in a shrug.

Though willing to fight when situations demanded it, he preferred clean solutions to his problems. Which had been why he’d resorted to poison in the first place. Still, there was some thrill to be found in pitting himself against the elder Quinn. If rumors held, he possessed some sort of strategic mind. Simply a bump in the road, Sokolov.

The detective watches the miasma gather with a detached curiosity. The slight flickering of his eyes to the shadowy portal gives away the Houndstone’s appearance. He’s faster than I thought. A rather concerning revelation considering how much he’d taken into account. Still, it is a sign they have the blonde on the back foot.

Splish! The rock renders the Intelleon’s water bullet into a puddle. Above, the mute lizard’s hands furl into irritated fists. “Anne.” Nikita’s voice is still cool, though his eyes flicker to his assassin. As she tries to fire again, the biological gun jams—the dark of the Aerodactyl producing a momentary panic. “!?” She comically shakes her hand as if it’s a jammed candy dispenser.

Nikita knows Anne’s strong suit is not hand-to-hand combat. She is a glass cannon of sorts, best suited for stealth. “Run.” As the Aerodactyl swoops in, the Intelleon leaps for the ceiling. Her aim? To send the behemoth crashing into the wall behind her. She follows this up with an Acrobatics. Though not very effective, she has no intention of just giving up.

The detective staggers back as the Springtide Storm takes hold. A few pink petals bite into his long sleeves, exposing pale skin beneath. “Tch.” The sound of a gong resonates as his dog’s teeth lock into the ghost’s steel frame. He holds on even as petals threaten his form—a few gouge the dark of his bones. But the power of shadows is seemingly snatched from his mouth. Head ringing from the impact, Winters dropped to the ground.

A few calculations followed. This will get out of hand if we’re not careful. Eye sockets meet brooding eyes as the lifelong companions make a decision.

At about this time, the Nihelego frees itself from its encumbrance. “Acid Spray!” Again, a curtain of purple erupts as the jellyfish tries to break the blonde’s resistance. But it’s merely a distraction. Aiming to use that attack as cover, Nikita reaches a hand for his Houndstone as it charges him. The pair vanish and then reappear, aiming to take up positions behind Cillian.
