Frank sank into the brooding, sulky mood of the car, wrapping it around him like a cloak. He barely registered Damien's soft words or dejected tone. Instead, Frank focused on the road, ensuring that they made it to Lilycove on time. [break][break]

Finally, he said, "I know." [break][break]

And then fell silent for the rest of the drive. [break][break]

At their destination, the exchange went smoothly. Frank stood to the side while much more capable grunts wrangled the Skeledirge from the back of the truck. When it was time to leave, he climbed back into the driver's seat, intending to ditch the vehicle as usual before heading home. [break][break]

"I'll see you later," he said to Damien, fairly certain the younger man would not want to join him on this last task. Now that the job was done, Damien had no reason to stay in Frank's company. [break][break]

Still, despite his numbness and anger, a small part of Frank hoped otherwise.

Frank's eyes crinkled with mirth at the thought of Cillian being anything close to a maternal figure. But he made no comment on it. He was not exactly a model parent, either, considering he didn't have access to his own children. [break][break]

"So Lugia saved you and made you like that," Frank said instead, his tone contemplative as he watched Cillian rip the truck's door off its hinges. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, yeah? Between you and Lugia, I don't know that I'd last long." [break][break]

The grunt laughed, then surveyed the rest of the car. "I think we're pretty much done. Are we just leaving it here or are we lighting it on fire, or something?" [break][break]

Frank stood back as shadows ripped into the doomed vehicle. A fearful dread shuddered through him, and the little hairs all over his body stood on end at the sight. [break][break]

May I never give Cillian a reason to use those powers on me, Frank swore to himself, even as he flashed his friend an amazed smile. "That's fucking crazy," he said out loud. [break][break]

In his hands, the baseball bat continued to dent the truck's walls. By then, however, it had become little more than a pile of scrap. [break][break]

"I've seen pictures of Nihilego, yeah. They look kind of cool, but if you say they're nasty, then I believe you." Frank paused as he glanced back over at Cillian. "How exactly did you fend them off?" [break][break]

Maintaining the appearance of calm despite feeling crushed inside, Frank drove the truck back onto the road and resumed their journey to Lilycove. Though the tension in the air had lessened with Damien's outburst, it still lingered, especially as Frank pondered how to acknowledge what the other man had said. [break][break]

Or if he should at all. What had Jackie said to him once? That sometimes people just need to vent to get their feelings out? [break][break]

So Frank settled on: "Glad to know you think I'm pathetic." [break][break]

Those weren't the right words to say, but nothing was. But if he was going to be pathetic, at least he was doing work that was both exciting and rewarding. Damien would never understand, but that was just another difference between them. One of many. [break][break]

Frank felt numb all over. Numb and angry.

Leon the Buzzwole punched through a window, sending shards of glass flying. The Ultra Beast didn't seem phased by the injuries or the bleeding, moving on to the next window instead. [break][break]

"Hey, leave one for me!" Frank called out as he accepted the baseball bat from Cillian. Violet eyes swept over the shadowed claws of his friend's hand and the marks they made in the bat, but Frank made no comment. [break][break]

Team Rocket's leadership were equal parts dangerous and bizarre. It was better for him not to ask questions. [break][break]

"It's about what you'd expect: blisteringly hot and there's sand everywhere. You could go to Hoenn's own desert and get pretty much the same experience," Frank said instead. "Ultra Deep Sea, now… I've heard crazy stories about that place." [break][break]

"A while ago in the Ultra Desert," Frank replied, watching his Buzzwole's work with pride, his hands on his hips. "I don't get the chance to bring it out very often but for this kind of work? It'll get the job done quick." [break][break]

In the corner of his eye, he noticed Cillian picking up a baseball bat. [break][break]

"What, but you didn't bring me anything to use?" Frank laughed, obviously unbothered. [break][break]

He peered between Buzzwole and Breloom to assess the damage so far, then turned a cheeky grin upon Cillian. "Better get in there before our Pokémon smash the car to smithereens. Between the two of them, they look almost done." [break][break]

Frank tossed a Pokéball back and forth between his hands. He gazed upon the unmarked truck, which had been his faithful companion for several months now, with a sense of bittersweet wistfulness. [break][break]

"Goodbye, Gertie," he began, as if giving a eulogy. "You were a great truck. Super dependable, quiet, and really smooth driving. But now our days have come to an end, and we're going to replace you with a different truck." [break][break]

The League had finally tagged the vehicle and linked it with Team Rocket's smuggling operations, so Frank had to get rid of it. What better way than to destroy it with his Pokémon? His Buzzwole emerged from its vessel, ready to smash metal to smithereens. [break][break]

"All right, Leon. This is the truck I mentioned. Go ham!" [break][break]

Stepping up to the vehicle, the Ultra Beast cracked its knuckles, cranked back an arm, and punched with all its might. [break][break]

Conversation continued to buzz around Frank, especially between the Rocket leadership. A woman (Diana Cavendish) murmured under her breath near him, but he wasn't close enough to hear her words. [break][break]

A Megalopolan stood at the front of the crowd, giving a speech to his comrades. His fellow prisoners of war. Frank tried to pay attention at first, but it was clear the sentiments weren't for the likes of him. So he tuned them out, just in time to hear Shred's open-ended question. [break][break]

What comes next, indeed. [break][break]

"Maybe an all-expenses-paid vacation in Alola for a week, huh? What do you think, boss?" Frank joked, nudging howard slayte with his elbow. He kept his voice low, out of respect for the ceremony. [break][break]

"If we conquer the region, surely we can have a little treat before the busy, busy work of administering begins."

The battle between the dragons intensified. All Frank could do was watch with rapt attention until one slew the other. Knowing they were in a simulation, he felt no remorse or sadness watching the death occur. In fact, it was almost like watching a movie unfold. [break][break]

In the end, he received the LIGHT STONE. Nothing about its appearance seemed extraordinary, so he handed it to Fenelle, just as their surroundings began to fade into blankness. [break][break]

Frank didn't bother with a text. He simply gave his companion a smile and a thumbs up, then unplugged.

The fall through the Ditto-hole seemed to take forever, but then Frank hit the ground—hard. He groaned and rolled onto his back, then sat bolt upright when he saw their surroundings. A beautiful blue sky stretched as far as the eye could see, while beneath him, old stone spoke of centuries endured. [break][break]

Shouting drew Frank's attention. Two men yelled at each other from across the way, while two dragons—one black, one white—dueled high in the air. [break][break]

Looking around for Fenelle, Frank took out his phone and sent some quick texts. "What do you think? Ideals sound more important to me, but since this is a simulation, maybe it doesn't matter?"

While Fenelle grabbed an inflatable hammer, Frank picked up a baseball bat with more heft to it. Swinging it at toys and furniture alike, he started to laugh from the exhilaration and catharsis. It felt surprisingly good to channel his recent frustrations and stresses into such a violent, physical act. [break][break]

Eventually, though, he found the Ditto, disguised as a child's toy castle. It squeaked when Frank hit it, then flattened and transformed into a pitch black hole. "What do you know," the man murmured, before turning away to see where Fenelle was. [break][break]

"Found the Ditto!" he texted while waiting beside the exit. Only when his companion met up with him did he jump down into the black nothingness.
