Drowning sorrows (M)

As that slashing sound grew louder and closer, Finn could smell something change in the air. That burned, ionised odour triggered intense shock waves inside him, reminding him of that precise moment in that horror dimension - just a thread's width away from being stabbed and gutted. What would Finn say to Isaac? Run, I'll handle it- as he knew he should, even though his hands trembled and grew cold. He couldn't even protect his student. Useless, lousy Finn grew slack and shivered.
Yet, even though Finn's faith in himself slipped through his fingers like water, Isaac still looked at him like he mattered. He offered Finn's sword to him, and Finn thought he saw a glimpse of a confident, bracing smile. Finn's brow trembled. This offer of facing his fears together rolled about in his mind.
Finn gripped onto his sword's handle and onto Isaac's arm, pushing himself up on his feet. His palms remembered how they fit into the grooves of his katana's hilt and that familiarity helped him feel the ground beneath his feet, the fire in his gut.
Finn cared so much for Isaac. He treasured how willing he was to sit with him in his pain, and even fight alongside him against this threat. Isaac give him the courage to do what he needed to do as his teacher.
Finn's grip tightened on his katana as he turned his focus to the trees.
"Run, Isaac. I'll take it from here."
The trees parted with a flash of pink. Out from its smouldering remains stepped a robot soldier that looked a Gallade out of infernal steel. Its eyes blinked with cold, inhuman cruelty.
Finn and the creature exchanged glances, as if in some perverted ritual of sportsmanship before a duel. And then, like lightning, the Iron Valiant lashed forward.
"GO!" Finn slammed his back into Isaac, shoving him towards the glade's exit, drawing his sword to his face just in time to block the Iron Valiant's attack. With a bitter grunt, Finn parried off its slash and kicked into a bush. He panted. The Iron Valiant did not stay there for long. Finn's Decidueye met him in the shadows, her ghostly presence deepening the darkness as she brought the force of the night down on her foe.
Finn needed to defend Isaac. He needed to do what was right, or die fighting.
